  • This study examined differences in the activity of upper limb muscles according to how an ultrasound head is gripped. Twenty-two adult males were participated in the study. Each participant was asked to apply ultrasound treatment on to a lump of pork meat by two different ultrasound head grip patterns: spherical and cylindrical grips. Muscle activity was measured in the extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL), flexor carpi ulnaris (FCU), and pronator teres (PT), triceps brachii (TB), middle deltoid (MD), and upper trapezius (UT) muscles. There were no significant differences in the EMG signals of any muscle according to the ultrasound head grip pattern (p>.05). There were significant differences in the EMG signal of each type of muscle (p<.05). The EMG signal of UT was the lowest and that of TB was lower than ECRL and FCU. There were interactions between ECRL and FCU, between ECRL and PT, between FCU and ECRL, and between FCU and MD. The EMG signal of ECRL using the cylindrical head was low and that of FCU with the cylindrical head was high, while the opposite was the case with the spherical head ($p_{adj}$ <.05/15). The results of this study indicate that the wrist muscles worked actively when the participants applied ultrasound therapy using both spherical and cylindrical heads. A spherical head might induce imbalanced muscle activity among the wrist muscles, leading to deviation of the wrist joint. Therefore, the cylindrical head is recommended for ultrasound therapy because it produced a constant, repeated force.

  • Research was carried out on 204 university students in Daegu and Seoul who majored in food and nutrition (male: 23, female: 84) and physical education (male: 79, female: 18). The average age of males was 21.6 and for females 21.5. The Body Mass Index (BMI) was $21.74{\pm}2.91kg/m^2$ normal. The research examined attitudes on exercise. Dietary life and health awareness. It turned out both groups gave strong consideration to healthy habits and an awareness of exercise. Students majoring in physical education showed a positive self-evaluation of health but also showed higher rates of exposure to smoking as well. Both groups realized the importance of both exercise and nutrition in education. In terms of breakfast, few students frequently had breakfast (31.4% out of total) and of these. 64.5% had it traditionally (boiled rice, soup, and side dishes). There were 3.4% students who never had breakfast. As shown in our research, students who majored in food and nutrition had positive attitudes on exercise, dietary life, and health for the future, rather than the present. Thus, the development of educational and support programs, to make this future real are greatly needed.

  • This paper convergent examined caregiver burden, depressive symptoms and health related quality of life of 226 caregivers of stroke patients, who had been hospitalized in 7 general hospitals located in Cheongju and Daejeon Metropolitan city. The quality of life was measured using SF-8, which is a short version of HRQoL. According to Multiple regression Analysis, dependence of a patient were important factors in the physical related quality of life. These results suggest that in order to improve the quality of life related to the physical health of the stroke patient's caregiver, the elderly long-term care insurance system and the caregiver system and the ward of the Ministry of Health and Welfare are expanded ward without a caregiver. There is a need to raise expectations for recovery through education and family support groups.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of visual block (eyes open or closed), mental task type, and participation in an exercise program on static balance in the elderly. The subjects were 34 elderly (>65 years old) residents of a social welfare institute in Gyeonggi-do. We measured the following variables. Berg balance scale, mini mental state examination, balance performance monitor (sway area, path, and maximal sway velocity), age, weight, height and whether the subject participated in an exercise program. Scores for the Berg balance scale and mini mental state examination were evaluated to assess static balance ability either alone (single task paradigm) or while performing a mental task (dual task paradigm). Static balance variables that were measured included sway area, path, and maximal sway velocity. Each test was repeated three times. Multiple regressions analysis was used to examine the effect of each variable on static balance ability. For the dual task paradigm, static balance was affected by whether the subject participated in an exercise program. The Berg balance scale score for subjects with their eyes open was affected by whether they participated in an exercise program, while this variable in addition to the height and weight of subjects were determining variables in subjects with their eyes closed. As a result, whether subjects participated in an exercise program affected their static balance irrespective of whether their eyes open or closed. Therefore, regular exercise is recommended for elderly people and further research is needed to examine the relationship between static and dynamic balance while performing mental tasks such as cognition and attention.

  • Purpose: The purpose was to link items of questionnaires that measure functioning and disability of persons with Low Back Pain (LBP) into the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Methods: The Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), Roland and Morris Disability Questionnaire (RM), Fear-Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire (FABQ), and Short Form-36 health survey (SF-36) were evaluated to map items of those questionnaires into the ICF categories. The linking rule was employed and linking was performed independently by 10 health professionals. One-hundred and two patients with LBP were recruited from 19 medical institutes to this study for a field test to examine relations between the scale and its linked ICF category set. Pearson correlation coefficient was used to analyze their relationships. Results: Walking was only found to be one-to-one linking between the scale and the ICF. Sixty questions in FABQ were to be linked to 9 of ICF categories. Ten and 14 ICF categories were able to be linked to RM and ODI respectively. It was found that majority of items from ODI and RM scale had similar concept and linked to the same ICF category. SF-36 had only 15 categories of the ICF linked. Strong relationship was observed between measurement scales and linked ICF code sets (r=0.79, r=0.65, r=0.47, and r=-0.31 for ODI, RM, FABQ and SF-36 respectively). Conclusion: It was found that commonly used clinical tools for LBP may be linked to ICF. The study results may suggest that clinical data can be standardized to communicate between related professionals.

  • It is a well accepted fact that mental and physical health of nurses has a direct bearing or influence in their practice in the nursing profession. Recently, with this view in mind, the study of the mental and physical health of nurses has attracted the attention of many especially those in research hospitals. According to Soon Hyang Cha(1974) a nurse in clinical practice or service has a daily energy consumption of 39% and San Cho Chun (1974) asserts that Nurses'duties are more demanding on her emotionally than on her nursing technical skills. Many more studies has been made to this effect, here and abroad and similarly stressed the importance of mental and physical health for nurses. This study was made in an attempt to analyze the trend or tendency of the mental and physical health of nurses by employing the Cornell Medical Index (CMI) method. The data has been collected from May 1977 to November 1977, 200 nurses from 8 University hospitals and 200 nurses from general hospitals in Seoul, Theses who participated were selected at random. The data were tabulated and comparison made. The results were as follows : 1. Among nurses, the analysis based on the length of experience, it is apparent that, the longer or more experience one ha s, the more complaints they have. 2 The longer the nurses are engaged in nursing practice, the more they have problems in their digestive, musculoskeletal, respiratory and nervous systems and are more prone to diseases, and get tired easier than those of shorter experience. But on the other hand it could be seen that younger nurses or nurses with less experience in the profession are more melancholic and prone to stress than those with longer experience.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a workplace-based work-conditioning program (WCP) on the management of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMDs) in an automobile-parts manufacturing company. In total, 1,110 subjects with WRMDs participated in workplace-based WCP emphasizing function-centered management and ergonomics. We investigated the incidence of WRMDs variables (number of persons diagnosed with industrial accident-related WHMDs, number of cases of WRMD) and financial benefits (cost of workers' compensation insurance and lost work days related to WRMDs) per year before and after WCP. Additionally, we compared self-reported pain intensity and functional disability in subjects with musculoskeletal pain before and after the WCP. Pain intensity was measured using a visual analog scale (VAS), and functional disability was measured by the neck disability index (NDI) and the Oswestry disability Index (ODI). The number of person diagnosed with industrial accident-related WRMDs, the number of cases of WRMD, the cost of workers' compensation insurance and lost work days related to WRMDs per year decreased by 51%, 37%, 34%, and 47%, respectively, and VAS, NDI, and ODI scores decreased significantly after implementation of WCP (p<.05). Thus, the results of the present study suggest that function-centered, workplace-based WCP was effective in managing WRMDs at an automobile-parts manufacturing company.

  • Purpose: The aim of the current study was to examine the effects of hinged ankle-foot orthosis (HAFO) on walking function in children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy (CP). Methods: Thirty-two children (mean age: $6.79{\pm}0.35years$, age range: 5-7 years) who were diagnosed with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy participated in the study. Each subject typically walked through 10 meters of a gait platform with markers on the subject's proper body segments and underwent 3-D motion analysis system with and without hinged ankle-foot orthosis. The HAFOs were all custom-made for individual CP children and had plantarflexion stop at $0^{\circ}C$ with no dorsiflexion stop. The interventions were conducted over three trials in each group, and measurements were performed on each subject by one examiner in three trials. 3-D motion analysis system was used to measure gait parameters such as walking velocity, cadence, step-length, step-width, stride-length, and double support period in two conditions. Results: The walking velocity, cadence, step-length, and stride-length were significantly greater for the HAFO condition as compared to the no HAFO condition (p<0.05). However, no significant difference in step-width and double support period was observed between two conditions. Conclusion: These findings suggest that using the HAFO during walking would suggest positive evidence for improving the spatiotemporal parameters of gait in children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy.

  • This study examined the muscle recruitment order during extension of the hip joint in normal subjects, and evaluated whether the external support obtained from wearing a lumbosacral corset had an effect on muscle recruitment leading to increased lumbar stability. The subjects were 40 normal adults (32 male, 8 female) with no history of low back pain and no pathological findings in the nervous or musculoskeletal systems. All subjects extended their hip joints under 3 positions (prone, sidelying, standing). During extension, the onsets of contraction of the rectus abdominis, gluteus maximus, and semitendinosus muscles were measured. Electromyographic activity was measured using a surface electrode, and the muscle contraction onset time was designated as the point exceeding a threshold of 25 ms, using a mean plus twice of the standard deviation. To compare the average order of muscle contraction onset time, a Freedman two-way analysis of variance by ranks was used. The relative difference between muscle contraction onset time wearing and not wearing a lumbosacral corset was measured using a paired t-test. A difference in the average muscle contraction onset order for the rectus abdominis, gluteus maximus, and semitendinosus muscles was observed (p<.05) among three positions. However, wearing a lumbosacral corset did not. change the contraction order. In addition, wearing a lumbosacral corset produced a significant difference (p<.05) in the relative onset time between the rectus abdominis and gluteus maximus in the standing position, but no difference was observed for the other muscles or positions. In the future, patients suffering from low back pain should be compared with normal subjects to determine the effectiveness of a lumbosacral corset in changing muscle recruitment order.

  • The purpose of this study was to measure intrarater and interrater reliability of a portable digital pressure algometer. Fifty healthy subjects were recruited for this study. Pressure pain thresholds of splenius capitis, levator scapular, and upper trapezius muscles were measured using by FPK algometer and portable digital pressure algometer. Three trials were done on each subject by two examiners. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were used to determine the reliability of each measure. The intrarater reliability of the FPK algometer was good and excellent (ICC .63~.79) and the interrater reliability was poor and good (ICC .15~.57). The intrarater reliability of a portable digital pressure algometer was excellent (ICC .75~.86) and the interrater reliability was poor and good (ICC .35~.61). This result suggests that the intrarater reliability and interrater reliability of a portable digital pressure algometer were better than an FPK algometer.
