Studies on Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Soils of Ulsan City (蔚山市 土砂中의 多環芳香族의 鹽化水素의 含量에 關한 硏究)

  • The contents of benzo(a)pyrene (Bap.), Pyrene(Py) and Perylene(Pery) were determined by one-dimensional dual band thinlayer chromatogragphy and spectrofluorophotometer in soil samples from road at 36 places of Ulsan and 6 places of Seoul from April to May, 1984. The concents were as follows: 1. Ulsan city : Bap. 0.05-3.66 $\mu$g/g ; mean 1.07 $\mu$g/g Py. 0.60-11.01 $\mu$g/g ; mean 4.34 $\mu$g/g Pery. 0.94-5.48 $\mu$g/g ; mean 1.83 $\mu$g/g 1) Industrial area : Bap. 0.03-3.66 $\mu$g/g ; mean 5.28 $\mu$g/g Py. 2.34-9.07 $\mu$g/g ; mean 5.28 $\mu$g/g Pery. 1.01-3.69 $\mu$g/g ; mean 2.09 $\mu$g/g 2) Commercial area : Bap. 0.15-2.27 $\mu$g/g ; mean 0.29 $\mu$g/g Py. 0.06-11.0 $\mu$g/g ; mean 4.04 $\mu$g/g Pery. 1.03-5.48 $\mu$g/g ; mean 1.84 $\mu$g/g 3) Residential area : Bap. 0.05-0.05 $\mu$g/g ; mean 0.29 $\mu$g/g Py. 1.34-5.53 $\mu$g/g ; mean 2.74 $\mu$g/g Pery. 0.94-2.15 $\mu$g/g ; mean 1.18 $\mu$g/g 2. The areas that had high contents of Benzo(a)pyrene had also high contents of Pyrene and Perylene. 4. The industrial area had the highest contents of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, followed by commercial area and residential area. 5. The contents of Bap. and Pery. in the commercial area were similar in Seoul and Ulsan, while the content of Py. in Seoul was 4 times higher than in Ulsan.

Contents of Heavy Metals in Marine Invertebrates from the Korean Coast (한국 연안산 해산 무척추동물의 중금속 함량)

  • To measure the heavy metal contents of marine invertebrates, we collected 239 individuals representing 52 species from the eastern (Pohang), western (Gunsan), and southern (Tongyeong) coasts of Korea: 34 species of molluscan shellfish (Gastropoda and Bivalvia), 6 species of Cephalopoda, 8 species of Crustacea, and 4 other species. The mean levels of the heavy metals in the samples taken from the edible portion of each Gastropoda were high in the order of Zn ($21.471\;{\mu}g/g$), Cu ($4.115\;{\mu}g/g$), Mn ($0.868\;{\mu}g/g$), Ni ($0.254\;{\mu}g/g$), Pb ($0.238\;{\mu}g/g$), Cd ($0.154\;{\mu}g/g$), and Cr ($0.110\;{\mu}g/g$). The heavy metals in the Bivalvia were high in the order of Zn ($35.655\;{\mu}g/g$), Mn ($5.500\;{\mu}g/g$), Cu ($3.129\;{\mu}g/g$), Cd ($0.423\;{\mu}g/g$), Ni ($0.402\;{\mu}g/g$), Cr ($0.233\;{\mu}g/g$), and Pb ($0.232\;{\mu}g/g$). The heavy metals in the Cephalopoda were high in the order of Zn ($18.380\;{\mu}g/g$), Cu ($3.594\;{\mu}g/g$), Mn ($0.630\;{\mu}g/g$), Cr ($0.150\;{\mu}g/g$), Pb ($0.068\;{\mu}g/g$), Cd ($0.034\;{\mu}g/g$), and Ni ($0.030\;{\mu}g/g$). The heavy metals in the Crustacea were high in the order of Zn ($25.333\;{\mu}g$/g), Cu ($9.042\;{\mu}g/g$), Mn ($0.659\;{\mu}g/g$), Cr ($0.592\;{\mu}g/g$), Cd ($0.207\;{\mu}g/g$), Pb ($0.126\;{\mu}g/g$), and Ni ($0.094\;{\mu}g/g$). Therefore, the mean levels of the harmful heavy metals (Cd and Pb) in marine invertebrates were high in the order of Bivalvia>Crustacea=Gastropoda>Cephalopoda. The average daily intakes of the heavy metals from the fisheries products were as follows: Cd ($6.88\;{\mu}g$), Cr ($19.13\;{\mu}g$), Cu ($137.02\;{\mu}g$), Mn ($156.13\;{\mu}g$), Ni ($11.39\;{\mu}g$), Pb ($7.01\;{\mu}g$) and Zn ($1,025.94\;{\mu}g$). The average weekly intakes of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn from the fisheries products were 11.47%, 0.46%, 3.27% and 1.71% respectively, as compared with PTWI (Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intakes) established by FAO/WHO Expert Committee for Food Safety Evaluation.

  • Well-balanced meal is very important in its quantity and quality. Especially on the quantity field it becomes difficult for a foodservice operation to decide proper portion for individuals uniformly. These study was focused to setting up a proper portion by each food service operation. The results obtained were: 1. Individual consumption size from dormitory food service of college: cooked rice 282 g, soups 161 g, pot stewes 162 g, stir fries 53 g, stews 32 g, kimchies 47 g, fresh and boiled salads 43 g, one course dishies 477 g, pan broiles 44 g, meunieres 124 g. Individual consumption size from industry foodservice (white collar worker): cooked rices 228 g, soups 205 g, pot stewes 251 g, stir fries 20 g, stewes 76 g, kimchies 57 g, fresh and boiled salads 36 g, one course dishies 423 g, pan broiles 63 g, meunieres 38 g. 2. Proper portion of meal based on a statistical data is as follows: at college foodservice - cooked rices $280{\sim}290$ g, soups $155{\sim}170$ g, pot stewes 170 g, stir fries 60 g, stewes 35 g, kimchies $40{\sim}60$ g, fresh and boiled salads 50 g, one course dishies 480 g, pan broiles 50 g, meunieres 130 g and at industry foodservice (white collar worker) - cooked rices $220{\sim}250$ g, soups 210 g, pot stewes 250 g, stir fries 20 g, stewes 80 g, kimchies 60 g, fresh and boiled salads 40 g, one course dishies 430 g, pan broiles 70 g, meunieres 40 g.

  • Let G be a Denjoy domain and let G' a Denjoy proper subdomain of G and homeomorphic to G. We consider conformal re-imbeddings of G' into G. Let G and G' are N-connected. We know that if N = 2, there is a re-imbedding f of G' into G such that G - cl(f(G')) has an interior point. In this note, we obtain the following theorem. If $N{\geq}3$, G has a Denjoy proper subdomain G' such that, for any re-imbeddings f of G' into G, G - cl(f(G') has no interior point.

A Study on Heavy Metal Concentrations of Oxidized Hair Coloring Products in Korea Market (한국에서 유통 중인 산화형 염모제의 중금속 농도에 관한 연구)

  • This study was aimed to provide the fundamental data about oxidized hair color products. For this reason, we collected 125 oxidized hair color products, which were distributed in domestic market from January to October, 2012, and measured the heavy metal concentrations of lead, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, manganese, nickel, copper in the samples. Results were compared by domestic, foreign, henna, type and color. The average metal concentrations were as follows; 0.211 ${\mu}g/g$ for lead, 0.008 ${\mu}g/g$ for cadmium, 0.051 ${\mu}g/g$ for arsenic, 0.954 ${\mu}g/g$ for chromium, 6.250 ${\mu}g/g$ for manganese, 0.591 ${\mu}g/g$ for nickel and 0.544 ${\mu}g/g$ for copper. In case of lead and arsenic, the concentrations were much less than the regulated amount (20 ${\mu}g/g$ and 10 ${\mu}g/g$, respectively) suggested by MFDS (Ministry of Food and Drug Safety). In henna (p < 0.05), the concentrations were significantly higher than those of other domestic and foreign oxidized hair color products as follows; 1.264 ${\mu}g/g$ for lead, 0.267 ${\mu}g/g$ for arsenic, 0.025 ${\mu}g/g$ for cadmium, 4.055 ${\mu}g/g$ for chromium, 72.044 ${\mu}g/g$ for manganese, 3.076 ${\mu}g/g$ for nickel and 4.640 ${\mu}g/g$ for copper. Statistically, it showed that the heavy metal concentrations were quite different for the different types of hair color products. The cream and liquid type products had the highest average concentration in chromium (0.708 ${\mu}g/g$, 0.478 ${\mu}g/g$, respectively). On the other hand, powder type products showed the highest concentration in manganese (60.041 ${\mu}g/g$). In addition, the concentrations of heavy metals and the color of products are not quite correlated. It was shown that average concentrations of lead and chromium were higher for yellow, chromium for red and pink, manganese for brown and black, and nickel for green.

Analysis of Manganese Contents in 30 Korean Common Foods (한국인 상용식품 중 30종류 식품의 망간 함량 분석)

  • This study was conducted to analyze manganese contents of Korean common foods. Contents of manganese in 30 foods were analyzed by ICP spectrometer. And daily manganese intake through 30 common foods was calculated using analysis data of this study and daily food intakes cited from report on 1998 national health and nutrition survey. The average manganese contents of foods analyzed were 949.6 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for rice, 236.1 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for Korean chinese cabbage kimchi, 27.2 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for citrus fruit, 2.6 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for milk, 214.6 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for radish root, 40.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for apple, 60.4 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for persimmon, 13.9 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for pork, 9.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for beef, 638.3 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for soybean curd, 184.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for radish kimchi, 56.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for pear, 18.4 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for beer, 11.3 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for egg, 9.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for carbonated beverage, 345.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for bread, 50.7 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for soju, 270.3 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for potato, 236.1 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for sweet potato, 91.2 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for ramyeon, 32.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for onion, 68.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for nabak kimchi, 538.2 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for soybean sprout, 112.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for welsh onion, 336.7 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for rice cake, 589.9 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for Korean chinese cabbage, 430.4 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for somyeon, 144.3 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for pumpkin, 3.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for yoghurt, and 614.4 $\mu\textrm{g}$ for spinach per 100 g of each food. The daily manganese intake through 30 common foods of Koreans in 1998 was 3420.7 $\mu\textrm{g}$. Major sources of dietary manganese were rice, kimchi, and soybean curd. Especially, rice supplied 68.1% of total dietary manganese intake through 30 common foods. Further studies are required to establish database and RDA of manganese.

  • We introduce and investigate the notions of super (g,g')-continuous functions and strongly $\theta$(g,g')-continuous functions on generalized topological spaces, which are strong forms of (g,g')-continuous functions. We also investigate relationships among such the functions, (g,g')-continuity and (${\delta},{\delta}'$)-continuity.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate and to predict of eutrophication in lakes by using Vollenweider-OECD model and total phosphorus concentration and inflow rate which were measured in 1993∼2001. The results of study were as follows. The annual total phosphorus loading from the watershed was calculated to be 55∼195tP/yr at lake Soyang, 221∼466tP/yr at lake Taechong, 123∼278tP/yr at lake Andong, 57∼109tP/yr at lake Seomjin. These are discharged, far the most parts, from population and fishfarm facility. TP loading on the surface area at lake Soyang was 3.01gP/㎡/yr, 2.82gP/㎡/yr, 2.84gP/㎡/yr, 3.03gP/㎡/yr, 2.34gP/㎡/yr, 1.78gP/㎡/yr, 0.91gP/㎡/yr, 0.89gP/㎡/yr, 0.86gP/㎡/yr, lake Taechong was 6.71gP/㎡/yr, 7.25gP/㎡/yr, 7.24gP/㎡/yr, 6.53gP/㎡/yr, 6.50gP/㎡/yr, 7.06gP/㎡/yr, 7.04gP/㎡/yr, 4.05gP/㎡/yr, 3.44gP/㎡/yr and TP loading on the surface area of lake Andong, lake Soemjin were 5.39gP/㎡/yr, 4.47gP/㎡/yr, 4.56gP/㎡/yr, 4.45gP/㎡/yr, 3.33gP/㎡/yr, 2.38gP/㎡/yr, 2.53gP/㎡/yr, 2.46gP/㎡/yr, 2.54gP/㎡/yr, 4.09gP/㎡/yr, 4.10gP/㎡/yr, 3.98gP/㎡/yr, 3.73gP/㎡/yr, 2.80gP/㎡/yr, 3.46gP/㎡/yr, 3.22gP/㎡/yr, 2.19gP/㎡/yr, 2.13gP/㎡/yr respectively. The tropic states of four lakes can be assessed as eutrophy because phosphorus leading exceeds the critical phosphorus loading by Vollenweider-OECD model.

  • The contents of Sodium, Magnesium, Iron, nickel , Copper, Maganese and Zinc in Korean tobacco leaves Produced in 1978, were investigated. The contents of each mineral element in tobacco leaves of various varieties were as follows ; Mg was 5370$\mu{g}/g-7640\mu{g}/g$, Burley> Flue -cured >Native. Mn was 210$\mu{g}/g-1290\mu{g}/g$, Burley>Flue -cured>Native. Fe was 330$\mu{g}/g-590\mu{g}/g$, Burley>Flue -cured>Native. Zn was 500$\mu{g}/g$ -100, Native > Burley>Flue-cured. Na, Ni and Cu showed no difference between the types. The contents of Ha, Mg, Mn, Ni and Cu were reduced in the order of Heavy 5, 3, 1 and increased in the order of Light 1, 3, 5 grades. The correlation coefficient (r) between Mg and grade in Hicks, SC 72 and HC 2326 were 0.770-0.981, and significance level was 0.1 % .

A Determination of the Salicylate Content of Ingredients Commonly Used in Korean foods Suggested for Allergic Patients

  • Salicylate from plant foods and histamine from animal foods have been suggested to cause various food allergic symptoms. Salicylate regarded as one of the inducing agents f3r chronic urticaria and asthma in allergic patients was studied. There is much interest about the effects of salicylate in food allergy. It it recently suggested that the intake of salicylate from foods may have contributed to chronic urticaria and asthma. The purpose of this study is to analyze the salicylate content in various foods. 153 ingredients commonly used in Korean foods were analyzed by HPLC. Among the vegetables, chard(8.22$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), soybean sprout(5.13$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), perilla lean3.03$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), Chinese cabbage(2.25$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), carrot(2.16$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), and squash(1.33$\mu\textrm{g}$/g) con-rained higher amounts of salicylate as compared to other vegetables. Among fruits, oranges(5.13$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), grapefruits(2.90$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), and plums(1.65$\mu\textrm{g}$/g) contained the most. In animal foods, almost no salicylate was found except in chocolate milk(0.32$\mu\textrm{g}$/g). It was also found in black pepper(8.2$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), coffee(can)(5.00$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), mustard(4.16$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), curry powder(3.24$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), kochujang(2.37$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), cream powder(1.19$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), brown rice(1.04$\mu\textrm{g}$/g) and sesame oil(1.00$\mu\textrm{g}$/g). All information found in this study can be used as nutritional education materials in potentially allergic people for a prudent diet plan and can also provide proper dietary guidelines for these allergic patients.
