  • The main goal of this paper is to investigate and compare English, German and Korean non-head-bound-intensifiers such as English ‘x-self’, German ‘selbst’, and Korean ‘susulo, casin’. That is, this paper is mainly concerned with the semantic domain where the respective contributions of the expressions in question overlap. The phenomenon under discussion with the label “intensifiers” is regarded as universal, which provides the ground of the comparative/contrastive or semi-cross-linguistic study of this paper. Not only the semantic concept of intensification by these expressions but also the combination of grammatical features or syntactic behaviours thereof seem to have highly invariant common denominators among the wide varieties of languages, even if they come from apparently different language families. In comparing English, German and Korean intensifiers, this paper is interested in the more general features of the expressions in question rather than some language-specific idiocyncracies. Intensifiers work similarly not only in English and German, but also in Korean. Each of three languages under investigation provides some sort of a safegard against confusing instances and misleading judgements on the issues under discussion. Morphologically, however, English expressions in question agree with their rele-vant NP in number, gender and person. Whereas German and Korean counterparts do not have such specific morphological properties. Intensifiers in their non-head-bound-use are subject-oriented, just as in their head-bound use. Non-head-bound-intensifiers differ from head-bound-intensifiers mostly in their syntactic behaviours or distributional properties, whereas they share the semantic domain “intensification” regarding relevant subject-NP. They introduce an ordering and distinguish center and periphery, and ‘self-involvement (directness of involvement)’seems a additional possible characterisation of the relevant dimension of these intensifiers in common.   • We introduce a way to generate morphologically and syntactically well-formed English sentences when building Korean to English bilingual dictionary for Machine Translation Systems. It has been proved that basic inflectional or structural descriptions for English sentences are by no means enough to generate proper English sentences because of traditional dictionary structures. Furthermore, much research has been focused only on how to disambiguate semantic ambiguities of words in a bilingual dictionary To take advantage of existing paperback Korean to English bilingual dictionary, its automatic conversion to an electronic version and methodologies to assign proper features to the descriptions for well-formed English sentences with minimum human effort have been proposed on the basis of the dictionary-specific structures. This approach was originally motivated for a glossary-based machine translation system, but it can be also applied to large scale dictionary work.

Perspectives on Learning English of Korean·Chinese·Japanese Students in an English Department in Korea (국내 영어학과 수업 내 한·중·일 학생들의 영어 학습에 관한 인식)

  • This study reports on the perspectives of Korean Chinese Japanese students (KS CS JS) on learning English at multi-cultural classrooms in Korea. The participants were 32 KS, 10 CS, and 14 JS in EFL writing classes, and the data comprised open-ended questionnaires and interviews. In analyzing the data, 'Intentional content analysis' and 'Critical discourse analysis' were adopted. The findings show that the learning of English in Korea was supported by 80% of JS, 71.9% of KS, and 50% of CS. The highest satisfaction of JS was caused by rich interactions with others. English speaking was the most difficult area for all the groups. Whereas KS (43.8%) used only Korean, CS and JS used both English and Korean for communication. Most KS (78.1%) hesitated to socialize with foreign students despite their wishes. These findings suggest that a variety of programs should be developed so that students share different cultures and use more English in the multi-cultural Korean context.

The Translation and Study of Korean Literature in English Speaking Countries (한국문학의 영어권에 있어서의 수용 및 연구 현황 - 미국을 중심으로)

  • Up to January 2003, the amount of English translated works of Korean Literature are 399, among which 170 are translated abroad, 189, in Korea, and 40, abroad as well as in Korea at the same time. Like other language speaking countries, the 1980s and the 1990s are peak not only for the translation of Korean Literature but also for its scholarly attention. The statistic analysis of information, accumulated in various databases such as The Harvard Korean Studies Bibliography, Hawaii Korean Studies Bibliography, and MLA International Bibliography, shows that up to February 2004, 33 books, 16 dissertations and one thesis, 200 articles, and 84 reviews are wholly devoted to the study of Korean Literature in English speaking countries. However, why certain works of poets like Kim Sowol, Han Youngun, So Chungju, and novelists like Hwang Sunwon, Han Moosook, Kim Dongri are mostly translated in English speaking countries remain to be analysed in their socio-political details in breadth and depth. Likewise, why the works of So Chungju, Yi Kwangsoo, Kim Manjoong, Han Youngun, Kim Sowol, Chung Jiyoung are mostly taught and studied in English speaking countries are open to further scholarly discussion and debate.

A Study on the Focus Realization in Intransitive Verb Sentences (영어 자동사 문장에서의 초점 실현 양상에 관한 연구: 영어원어민화자와 한국인화자 비교)

  • This paper aims to compare and analyse the pattern of the pitch accent realization between the English native speakers and the .Korean speakers, using the sentences by the scope of focus including intransitive verbs; unaccusative, unergative, and passive, based on the previous studies. The results show that the English native speakers produce the intonational patterns similar to the previous study (Hoskins, 1996), which showed that English native speakers deaccented after the focused word for unaccusative and passive verbs in broad focus. Korean speakers, however, have a tendency not to deaccent after the focused word for both verbs. In the narrow subject focus condition, Koreans do not deaccent the verbs after the focused subject. In the narrow verb focus condition, they produce the pitch accent on verbs as the English native speakers do, but they tend to produce the pitch accent on subjects that should not be given any pitch accent. Therefore, unlike the English native speakers, the Korean speakers have a tendency not only that they do not produce three types of intransitive verbs with proper intonation, but also that they do not realize the focus structure itself properly.

Newborn English Bulldogs with Multiple Malformation Syndrome and Lethal Characters

  • A female English bulldog was gave birth two neonates by cesarean section on the sixty one days after mating, but both neonates were died soon after birth. The bodies of neonates were diagnosed using radiography, ultrasonography, computed tomography and necropsy immediately after death. Both neonates had caudal regression syndrome, butterfly vertebra, hydrocephalus, umbilical hernia, cleft palate and bow-legged hind-limb. At necropsy, neonates had mild fetal anasarca, cleft lip and the skull was remained non-union. At thoracic cavity, only three ribs and thoracic spines were existed and patent ductus arteriosus was found. At abnormal cavity, the renal ectopia was found with abnormal morphology. In the present case, those English bulldog neonates with multiple congenital malformation syndromes seriously suffered vertebral column anomalies and that may induced by neural tube defects in during embryonic period. To prevent congenital malformation occurring in English bulldog, further in depth studies are needed for the breed specific genetic diversity and for the reason of behind genetic abnormality in these breed.

An analysis of the theories and a case study for teaching EFL reading with the use of socioaffective strategies (사회감정전략을 이용한 영어독해수업 모형제시를 위한 이론 및 사례연구 분석)

  • The purpose of this paper is to examine some of the theories concerning socioaffective strategies, to analyze the dialogues of the students negotiating for meaning of a reading material and to suggest some implications of socioaffective strategies for teaching reading. The examination of the theories - the interaction hypothesis and the sociocultural theory - suggest that the use of socioaffective strategies facilitates more effective understanding of information that is to be found. distributed, and taken in among the participants. The discourse analyses of the students' interaction in a Korean college English reading class show ample evidence of the use of socioaffective strategies that helped them understand the meaning of a text. However, the analyses show that the strategies are mostly used to ask questions concerning the meaning of clauses. Only few analytical questions are raised for some structural and pragmatical features in the text which are crucial to the understanding of its meaning. Imbalance also exists in the types of the questions used by the participants. The analyses indicate that, instead of negotiating more interactively, the students tend to rely upon a more advanced student when they face difficult English sentences. Therefore as a conclusion this paper emphasizes the importance of teaching socioaffective strategies to help students to help themselves to become more cooperative, independent and analytical in reading English texts.

  • In this paper, we propose a method to retneve english written korcan names efficientl, and design a multilingual name retrieval system, It is very difficult to retrieve english-written korean names in typical IR sytems. For example, "홍길동" is written in english as vanous forms such like "Hong, gildong", "Gildong Hong", "Hong kil dong", "Hong kil dong" and so on, We not only propose a rule-based querv expansion method to retrieve english-written korean names efficiently but also design a multiligual name retneval system which is consisted of query classifier, exception handler, query expander, query executor, exception list and rulebase, Finally we will try to show that english-written korean names could be efficiently retrieved with rule based name generator.

Effects of Prosodic Strengthening on the Production of English High Front Vowels /i, ɪ/ by Native vs. Non-Native Speakers (원어민과 비원어민의 영어 전설 고모음 /i, ɪ/ 발화에 나타나는 운율 강화 현상)

  • This study investigated how acoustic characteristics (i.e., duration, F1, F2) of English high front vowels /i, ɪ/ are modulated by boundary- and prominence-induced strengthening in native vs. non-native (Korean) speech production. The study also examined how the durational difference in vowels due to the voicing of a following consonant (i.e., voiced vs. voiceless) is modified by prosodic strengthening in two different (native vs. non-native) speaker groups. Five native speakers of Canadian English and eight Korean learners of English (intermediate-advanced level) produced 8 minimal pairs with the CVC sequence (e.g., 'beat'-'bit') in varying prosodic contexts. Native speakers distinguished the two vowels in terms of duration, F1, and F2, whereas non-native speakers only showed durational differences. The two groups were similar in that they maximally distinguished the two vowels when the vowels were accented (F2, duration), while neither group showed boundary-induced strengthening in any of the three measurements. The durational differences due to the voicing of the following consonant were also maximized when accented. The results are discussed further in terms of phonetics-prosody interface in L2 production.

Differential semantic processing in Korean and English Word Naming (모국어와 외국어 어휘 산출 시 의미정보처리 과정의 차이)

  • The present study was carried out to investigate how two languages are represented and processed for the late Korean-English bilinguals. To this end, we compared the naming times of Korean-English bilinguals on a series of the picture-word interference tasks. The entire experiment is divided into four parts, each of which required participants to name the pictures in Korean or in English with distractor words visually presented either in Korean or English. The distractor words were semantically related or unrelated to the picture. The results showed that, in different language conditions (L1 naming-L2 distractor, L2 naming - L1 distractor), there was only numerical difference between semantic related and unrelated condition. In same language conditions (L1 naming-L1 distractor, L2 naming-L2 distractor), however, significant semantic interference effect occurred. And, the interference effect was stronger in the L1 distractor condition than in the L2 distractor condition. These results suggest that the semantic processing of L1 and L2 for the late bilinguals are independent each other.
