It was common that the classification of itching was classified into four categories according to the neurophysiological mechanisms of pruritoceptive itching, neuropathic itching, neurogenic itching and psychogenic itching. Recently it was classified by clinical criteria. The neurotransmission pathway of itch is divided into histamine-dependent pathway and histamine-independent pathway. Different receptors and neuropeptides act on each itch mediator. Itch mediators such as histamine, BAM8-22, and chloroquine are transmitted through the histamine-dependent pathway. Cowhage spicule, protease, and TSLP (Thymic stromal lymphopoietin) have been reported to be related to the histamine-independent pathway. These itch mediators, receptors, and neuropeptides are the targets of treatment for itching. Although itching and pain are typical noxious stimuli, and in the past, it was argued that two senses were transmitted through one noxious stimulus receptor. It has recently been shown that itching and pain have an independent neurotransmitter system and both neuronal systems inhibit each other. In addition, the mutual antagonism between itching and pain is explained by various mechanisms. Recently, many new mediators and receptors are being studied. The studies on histamine 4 receptor (H4 receptor) have been actively conducted. And the H4 receptors are expressed in immune cells such as T cells. The therapeutic agent for blocking the H4 receptor can inhibit the inflammatory reaction itself, which is important for the itching and chronicization. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of itching and studying new itch mediators will lead to the development of effective therapies, and this is what I think the itching study will go on.

An analytical method applicable to quality control and its optimum conditions were studied for rapid and efficient analysis of sorbic and benzoic acids used as preservatives in the commercial soybean paste. In gas chromatographic analysis of sorbic and benzoic acids, the application of HP-FFAP (acid modified polyethylene) wide bore column improved the separation ability significantly. By setting the oven temperature of GC to $200^{\circ}C$, the total elapsed time for quantitative analysis was also reduced to the level required in using packed column. By extracting sorbic and benzoic acids from soybean paste with an automatic steam distillation device, the elapsed time for analysis was reduced by 80% more compared to using conventional steam distillation method. The recoveries of sorbic and benzoic acids by the automatic steam distillation were 98.1% and 99.9%, respectively. The sorbic acid was found in 3 samples of 14 commercial soybean pastes, of which contents were $466{\sim}530ppm$, while $0.3{\sim}4.4ppm$ of benzoic acid was found in all the samples.

Relationship between structure and biological activity was performed using the five substance P-related peptides (SPRPs) [mammalian-SP (M-SP), cod-SP (C-SP), trout-SP (T-SP), lungfish-SP (L-SP) and Ranakinin] and four SP analogs [[$His^5$]-SP (5H-SP), [$Gly^5$]-SP (5G-SP), ($Ile^8$)-SP (8I-SP) and ($Trp^8$)-Ranakinin (8W-Ranakinin)]. The circular dichroism (CD) spectra showed that all of the peptides took an unordered structure in buffer solution and artificial liposomes. However, 8W-Ranakinin undergoes conformational changes by being transferred into neutral and acidic liposomes from an unordered structure to more ordered structure. The arterial relaxing effect of the peptides was also studied with guinea-pig aorta (GPA), As a result of the studies, L-SP was about 14-fold more potant than M-SP. The order of potency compared to $EC_{50}$ value was $L-SP{\gg}M-SP>5G-SP{\ge}8I-SP>5H-SP>T-SP$, C-SP, Ranakinin, 8W-Ranakinin.

A novel neuropeptide with a relaxing activity on the dorsal retractor muscle (DRM) was isolated from the whole body extract of the starfish, Asterina pectinifera. The peptide was purified by gel-filtration ion-exchange and $C_{18}$ reversed-phase HPLC. The complete amino acid sequence of this peptide, which was determined by automated Edman degradation and MALDI-TOF mass, was Phe-Gly-Lys-Gly-Gly-Ala-Tyr-Asp-Pro-Leu-Ser-Ala-Gly-Phe-Thr-Asp. A comparison of the amino acid sequence with those of other known neuropeptides revealed that the asteripectin was a novel neuropeptide with smooth muscle-relaxing activity on the starfish DRM. This peptide showed threshold response to relaxing activity on the DRM at $10^{-10}M$ and the maximal relaxing effect was $120{\pn}7.0\%$ at $10^{-5}M$. The relaxing activity of this peptide on the starfish DRM increased in a dose-dependent manner.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Bojungikgitang(補中益氣湯), Soeumin bojungikgitang(少陰人 補中益氣湯) and its component groups on diabetes in alloxan induced diabetic rats. Sprague-Dawley male rats weighing $200{\pm}10\;gm$ were randomly assigned to one normal, one control and five experimental groups. The experimental groups was classified into to Bojungikgitang(B1 group), Soeumin bojungikgitang(B2 group), Bogihyulyak(B0 group), Siho-sengma(B1+ group) and Gwakhyang- soyeup(B2+ group). Diabetes was experimentally induced by abdomenal injection of 100 mg/kg of body weight of alloxan. Animals were sacrificed at the 6th day and 11th day of diabetic states. The results were obtained as follows: In carbohydrate metabolism, the level of glucose in control group was three-fold higher after alloxan injection than that of normal group. In B1, B2 groups the level of glucose was decreased by 39% and 43% compared with that of control group, and in component groups it was decreased by 73%, 81%, and 80% respectively. In fat metabolism, the level of triglyceride and total cholesterol in serum were lower in B1 and B2 groups with high significant difference and had similar tendency in components groups compared with that of control group. The level of HDL cholesterol on serum were increased in B1 and B2 group with significant difference. And in component group it had similar tendency compared with that of control group. In protein metabolism, the level of total protein and albumin were higher in B1 and B2 group with significant difference, and in component group also increased but with no significancy compared with control group. In kidney function, the level of creatinine group with significant difference, and other compared with control group. In liver function, the level of GOT, GPT, ${\gamma}$-GTP. ALP and bilirubin were lower in B1 and B2 group with significant difference, and in component had similar tendency compared with control group. But in the level of LDH, it was decreased with no significancy. These results indicate that Bojungikgitang(補中益氣湯), Soeumin bojungikgitang(少陰人 補中益氣湯) has strong effect on diabetes and it is useful to prevent diabetes, and in component groups the difference between B1+ and B2+ group was not significant.
There is much confusion with the relationship between character and actor. Under the pressure of 'becoming' a character, the actor tends to begin his work apart from his own senses, imagination and memory, and is most likely to fall into the trap of artificiality and clich$\acute{e}$. Like every other art, the actor has to begin honestly with himself who, in nature, has unfathomable possibilities. To be and live as a character, the actor has to experience. To experience, to react. To react, to see with all the senses. Like ours, each character's life goes on from reaction to reaction, reacting to the images from the imagination and the memory. "You are what you see." The actor is put into the extremely unfamiliar circumstances of drama, given only with his own senses, imagination and memory. Fear comes in. However, fear cannot stop the actor's challenging journey to self-discoveries. The actor does and acts, not because he is certain but because he is not. The actor challenges himself to go beyond the limit and uncertainty, so that he will finally come to know and truly understand human beings from the challenges of his own. In a nutshell, acting is a journey to the unknown and the unfamiliar in which the actor unceasingly discover new 'I's.
For last four or five years, the number of Korean students have gone on increasing awfully. After the year 1997 when they will flow in, our field and government will be undergone a big shock and social problems. Therefore, thorough grasping and the method of provision is expeced to need. 1. The situation, According to the data published from the year 1993 to 1997, their results are great different. But recent Korean embassy in China examined the situation of the Korean students, whose result was investigated as follows: about 1500 persons, their average age is 24 to 44, the ratio of male and female students is 3 to 1, that of their academic background which is a graduate of university : that of college : that of highschool is 1.6 : 1 : 4.7, and that of their class attitude which is direct : common : indirect appears the percents 30.4 : 52.8 : 16.8. 2. The controversial points (1) A lowering of standards on Chinese medical treatment is expected by the imprudent studying abroad without qualification. And because of excessive production of herb doctors, the amount of treatment may be above people's demand. Besides owing to the impossibility of prediction on the number the counterplans of our government may fall into utler confusion. (2) The curriculum, the teaching schedule and contents are so different that the graduates seem not to be given real education of chinese medicine from the point of Korean view. (3) In the wrong national examination, the important thought of china, and the system of WTO in Korea, when China will become mighty rival above problems contain the negative sides. 3. The counterplans - what should be performed soon. (1) Illegal contents about studying abroadl in China ought to inform sidely that students might not go on increasing. Before they form nam-power, the government and the field of chinese medicine should cope with such a situation together. (2) The law of regulation about agents should be legislated and they should be surpervised. (3) The exact numbers of students, their situation, and the present condition of each university should be examined. (4) After investigating the problems of the present system of national test, its enforcement and many counterplans is requisite. (5) The cooperating confrontation with the conference of dentistry is in need. (6) Since the problems are possibility to be developed to diplomatic questions, the effort of both nations is needful. - what need middle of long time. (1) The effort that suppress the more establishment of the college of oriental medicine is necessary. (2) After comparing with the system of foreign test, the government should make the system of test in accord with the mutualism and the principle of indiscrimination among nations and cope with such a many issues thoroughly.
The need of geothermal energy is constantly increasing for economical and environmental utilization. Horizontal ground heat exchangers (GHEs) can reduce installation cost and increase efficiency. There are many kinds of GHEs, and it is known that slinky and spiral coil type GHEs show high thermal performance. Therefore, this paper presents experimental results of heat exchange rates in horizontal slinky and spiral coil type GHEs installed in a steel box whose size is $5m{\times}1m{\times}1m$. Dried Joomunjin standard sand was filled in a steel box, and thermal response tests (TRTs) were conducted for 30 hours to evaluate heat exchange rates by changing different pitch spaces of horizontal slinky and spiral coil type GHEs. As a result, spiral coil type GHE showed 30~40% higher heat exchange rates per pipe length than horizontal slinky type GHEs. Furthermore, long pitch interval (Pitch/Diameter=1) showed 200~250% higher heat exchange rates per pipe length than short pitch interval (Pitch/Diameter=0.2) in both spiral coil and horizontal slinky type GHEs, respectively.

So far, studies on the settlement of breakwater have mainly been conducted through numerical model tests focusing on an analysis or through the laboratory wave tank tests using a scaled model. There has not been a study on the settlement that is measured in an actual breakwater structure. This study analyzed the data of settlement that has been measured in an actual caisson breakwater for a long time and the characteristics and causes of wave-induced settlement in the caisson (including beneath ground), based on qualitative aspect, were examined. The analysis revealed that wave clearly has an effect on the settlement in caisson, especially in the condition of high wave such as typhoon. Caisson settlement is caused by the liquefaction of ground, which is due to the increase of excess pore pressure, the combination of oscillatory excess pore pressure and residual excess pore water pressure, and the solidification process of ground due to dissipation of the accumulated excess pore pressure. The behavior of excess pore pressure in the ground beneath the caisson is entirely governed by the behavior of the caisson. Ground that has gone through solidification is not likely to go through liquefaction in a similar or a smaller wave condition and consequently, the possibility of settlement is reduced.
Glutathione production was carried out using mixed cells of E. coli TG1/pDG7 $\alpha$ and bakers yeast in an Aerated Slurry Bioreactor. Glutathione-producing enzymes were stable for 34 hours, yielding 4.6 mM glutathione in suspension reaction. Glutahione production with high density mixed cells was studied as a function of flow rate in an Aereated Slurry Bioreactor. Glutathione concentration was higher than that in suspension reaction for 32 hours at the substrate feeding rate of 5.2 mL/hr with cell recycle in continuous Aerated Slurry Bioreactor. It was for 42 hours at 2.6 mL/hr and 22 hours at 5.2 mL/hr without cell recycle. Glutahione productivity was 25.7 mg/g wet $cell{\cdot}hr$ at the substrate feeding rate of 10.4 mL/hr with cell recycle, but 5.28 mg/g wet $cell{\cdot}hr$ at 5.2 mL/hr and 1.65 mg/g wet $cell{\cdot}hr$ at 2.6 mL/hr without cell recycle. Effective production time increased from 25 to 45 hours, by using a surfactant, tween 80. As a purfing gas, nitrogen was tested instead of air to avoid a possible oxidizing effect on glutathione-producing enzymes, resulting in the increase of effective production time to 40 hours.
