  • TCV(Temperature control valve by pressure compensation) controls temperature constantly, when it is sending steam or high temperature water to heating device of heat exchanger. For designing TCV, the ratio of piston and hole diameters is one of the important design parameters. Numerical analysis is carried out to elucidate the flow characteristics in the TCV with different port areas of cold and hot waters, using the k-$\epsilon$ turbulence model and Cartesian cut-cell method. Numerical results show that the exit flow rate is mainly affected by pressure distribution in the piston.

  • Viscous flow and heat transfer phenomena in an axisymmetric cylinder which models a diesel engine have been numerically studied. In order to search for a way to minimize numerical diffusion, the effectiveness and the appropriateness of two selected numerical schemes for convective terms in the governing equations have been tested. They are Linear Upwind Difference Scheme and Hybrid Scheme. Using a standard k-.epsilon. turbulence model, the calculation has been carried out basically up to 180.deg. of crank angle. As a result, it was shown from comparison with previous experimental data that Linear Upwind Difference Scheme is less influenced than Hybrid Scheme by the numerical diffusion and it was suggested that these effects of numerical diffusion can be more significant than those due to turbulence modeling.

  • Ventilation of the marine engine room is very important for the health of the workers as well as the nomal operation of machines. To find proper ventilation conditions of this engine room, numerical simulation with standard k-.epsilon. model was carried out. In the present study, the marine engine room is considered as a closed space with a heat source and forced ventilation ducts. The injection angle of air supply is found to be important. Injection with downword angle depresses recirculation flow, causing a strong steam in the wider space of the room. Ventilation and removal of the released heat are promoted with this pattern. There is a possibility of local extreme heating at the upper surface of engine when supply and exhaust ports of air are in bilateral symmetry. The effect of the increase of exhaust port area on ventilation decreases as the number of supply port increases.

  • In this paper, the flow field with steady, axisymmetric flow characteristics in cylinder has been numerically investigated. The prediction of flow in cylinder was compared to experimental result. The turbulence closure being applied was K-${\epsilon}$ model and numerical scheme was Hybrid and Power-law scheme. The results of numerical computation showed some deviation from exper- imental data in the in cial region of cylinder, where streamline curvature is significant. However, the computational results agree qualitatively well with Mores's experimental results and the difference between Hybrid and Power-law schows similar results

  • A numerical analysis on three dimensional turbulent incompressible flows through linear cascades of turbine rotor blades with high turning angles has been performed by using a generalized k-.epsilon. model which is a high Reynolds number form and derived by RNG(renormalized group) method to account for the variation of the rate of strain. A second order upwind scheme is used to suppress numerical diffusion in approximating the convective terms. Body-fitted coordinates are adopted to represent the complex blade geometry accurately. For the case without tip clearance, velocity vectors and static pressure contours are shown to be in good agreement with previous experimental results. For the case with tip clearance, the effects of the passage vortex and tip clearance flow on the total pressure loss as well as their interactions are discussed.

  • In this paper, numerical simulation are conducted to predict the characteristics of the heat transfer and smoke flow and evacuation in the road tunnel. Fire source are used about 30 MW and the turbulent flow characteristics are considered by standard k-epsilon turbulent model. The effect of transient thermal behavior and disaster prevention can be used for designing the road tunnel.

  • In the present work, characteristics of an axial flow fan haying distorted inlet flow produced by hub cap are investigated. The distorted inlet flow is generated by the shape of hub cap installed in front of the axial flow fan. Two different cases of hub cap geometry are analyzed to verify the influence of flow distortion. The flow fields are analyzed numerically by solving steady form of three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes equation and standard k-$\epsilon$ model is used for a turbulence closure. The results obtained from the numerical simulation are compared to those from experimental measurements. It is found that the overall performance of the axial flow fan is increased by reducing the flow distortion at the hub. Detailed characteristics of the flow fields of two different geometric conditions are also discussed.

  • This paper presents the response surface optimization method using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes Analysis to optimize the shape of a axial flow fan. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with k-$\epsilon$ turbulence model are discretized with finite volume approximations. Regression analysis is used for generating response surface, and it is validated by ANOVA. Five geometric variables, i.e., distribution of sweep angle at mean and tip, lean angle at mean and tip, and spanwise location of mean were employed to optimize the efficiency. The computational results are compared with experiment data. As a main result of the optimization, the efficiency was successfully improved.

  • A numerical procedure for optimizing the shape of three-dimensional sedimentation tank is presented to maximize its sedimentation efficiency. The response surface based optimization is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis for multi-phase flow. Standard $k-{\epsilon}$ model is used as a turbulence closure. Three design variables such as, tank height to center feed wall diameter ratio, blockage ratio of center feed wall and angle of distributor are chosen as design variables. Sedimentation efficiency is defined as an objective function. Full-factorial method is used to determine the training points as a means of design of experiment. Sensitivity of each design variable on the objective function has been evaluated. And, optimal values of the design variables have been obtained.

  • The steady, incompressible developing 3-dimensional turblent flow in a square sectioned curved duct has been investigated by using partially-parabolic equation and Finite Analytic Method. The calculation of turbulent flow field is performed using 2-equation K-$\epsilon$ turbulence model, modified wall function, simpler algorithm and numerically generated body fitted coordinates. Iso-mean velocity contours at the various sections are compared with the existing experimental data and elliptic solutions by other authors. In the region of $0^{\circ}<{\theta}<71^{\circ}$, present results agree with the experimental data much better than the elliptic solution for the similar number of grid points. Furthermore, for the same tolerance, the present solution converges four times faster than the elliptic solution.
