The composites were fabricated, respectively, using 61[vol.%]SiC-39[vol.%]$TiB_2$ and using 61[vol.%]SiC-39[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ powders with the liquid forming additives of 12[wt%] $Al_{2}O_{3}+Y_{2}O_{3}$ by hot pressing annealing at $1650[^{\circ}C]$ for 4 hours. Reactions between SiC and transition metal $TiB_2$, $ZrB_2$ were not observed in this microstructure. ${\beta}{\rightarrow}{\alpha}$-SiC phase transformation was occurred on the SiC-$TiB_2$ and SiC-$ZrB_2$ composite. The relative density, the flexural strength and Young's modulus showed the highest value of 98.57[%], 226.06[Mpa] and 86.38[Gpa] in SiC-$ZrB_2$ composite at room temperature respectively. The electrical resistivity showed the lowest value of $7.96{\times}10^{-4}[{\Omega}{\cdot}cm]$ for SiC-$ZrB_2$ composite at $25[^{\circ}C]$. The electrical resistivity of the SiC-$TiB_2$ and SiC-$ZrB_2$ composite was all positive temperature coefficient resistance (PTCR) in the temperature ranges from $25[^{\circ}C]$ to $700[^{\circ}C]$. The resistance temperature coefficient of composite showed the value of $6.88{\times}10^{-3}/[^{\circ}C]$ and $3.57{\times}10^{-3}/[^{\circ}C]$ for SiC-$ZrB_2$ and SiC-$TiB_2$ composite in the temperature ranges from $25[^{\circ}C]$ to $700[^{\circ}C]$.
Zirconium diboride (ZrB2) and mixed diboride of (Zr0.7Ta0.3)B2 containing 30 vol.% silicon carbide (SiC) composites were prepared by hot-pressing at $1800^{\circ}C$. XRD analysis identified the high crystalline metal diboride-SiC composites at $1800^{\circ}C$. The TaB2 addition to ZrB2-SiC showed a slight peak shift to a higher angle of 2-theta of ZrB2, which confirmed the presence of a homogeneous solid solution. Elastic modulus, hardness and fracture toughness were slightly increased by addition of TaB2. A volatility diagram was calculated to understand the oxidation behavior. Oxidation behavior was investigated at $1500^{\circ}C$ under ambient and low oxygen partial pressure (pO2~10-8 Pa). In an ambient environment, the TaB2 addition to the ZrB2-SiC improved the oxidation resistance over entire range of evaluated temperatures by formation of a less porous oxide layer beneath the surface SiO2. Exposure of metal boride-SiC at low pO2 resulted in active oxidation of SiC due to the high vapor pressure of SiO (g), and, as a result, it produced a porous surface layer. The depth variations of the oxidized layer were measured by SEM. In the ZrB2-SiC composite, the thickness of the reaction layer linearly increased as a function of time and showed active oxidation kinetics. The TaB2 addition to the ZrB2-SiC composite showed improved oxidation resistance with slight deviation from the linearity in depth variation.
The mechanical and electrical properties of the hot-pressed and annealed $\beta-Sic$+39vol.%$ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites were investigated as a function of the liquid forming additives of $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3(6:4wt%)$. In this microstructures, no reactions and elongated $\alpha$-SiC grains with equiaxed $ZrB_2$, gains were observed between $\beta-SiC$ and $ZrB_2$, and the relative density was over 97.6% of the theoretical density. Phase analysis of the composites by XRD revealedmostly of $\alpha$-SiC(6H, 4H), $ZrB_2$, and weakly $\beta-SiC$(15R) phase. The fracture toughness decreased with increasing $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ contents and showed the highest of $6.37MPa.m^{\fraction ane-half}$ for composite added with 4wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives at room temperature. The electrical resistivity increased with increasing $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$contents and showed the lowest of $1.51\times10^{-4}\Omega.cm$ for composite added with $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives at $25^{\circ}C$. This reason is the increasing tendency of pore formation according to amount of liquid forming additives $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$. The electrical resistivity of the composites was all positive temperature coefficient resistance(PTCR) against temperature up to $700^{\circ}C$.
The composites were fabricated by adding 30, 35, 40, 45[vol.%] Zirconium Diboride(hereafter, $ZrB_2$) powders as a second phase to Silicon Carbide(hereafter, SiC) matrix. $SiC-ZrB_2$ composites were sintered by Spark Plasma Sintering(hereafter, SPS) in vacuum or argon gas atmosphere. The relative density of SiC+40[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ composites reveal high 99.57[%] in argon gas atmosphere and pressure 50MPa.
The $\beta$-SiC + $ZrB_2$ ceramic electroconductive composites were pressureless-sintered and annealed by adding 12wt% $Al_2O_3$ + $Y_2O_3$ (6 : 4wt%) powder as a function of sintering temperature. The relative density showed the highest value of 81.1% at 1900$^{\circ}C$ sintering temperature. The phase analysis of the composites by XRD revealed of $\alpha$-SiC(6H), $TiB_2$, $Al_5Y_2O_{12}$ and $\beta$-SiC(15R). Flexural strength showed the highest value of 230 MPa for composites sintered at 1900$^{\circ}C$. The vicker's hardness and the fracture toughness showed the highest value of increased with increasing sintering temperature and showed the highest of 9.88 GPa and 6.05 $MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ at 1900$^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistivity was measured by the Pauw method from 25$^{\circ}C$ to 700$^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistivity of the composites showed the PTCR (Positive Temperature Coefficient Resistivity).
The ${\beta}-SiC+ZrB_2$ ceramic composites were hot-press sintered and annealed by adding 1, 2, 3wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$(6 : 4wt%) powder as a liquid forming additives at $1950^{\circ}C$ for 4h. In this microstructures, no reactions were observed between $\beta$-SiC and $ZrB_2$, and the relative density is over 90.79% of the theoretical density and the porosity decreased with increasing $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ contents. Phase analysis of the composites by XRD revealed of $\alpha$-SiC(6H, 4H), $ZrB_2$, $Al_2O_3$ and $\beta$-SiC(15R). Flexural strength showed the highest of 315.46MPa for composites added with 3wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives at room temperature. Owing to crack deflection and crack bridging of fracture toughness mechanism, the fracture toughness showed the highest of $5.5328MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ for composites added with 2wt% $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives at room temperature.
To control the electrical properties of a SiC heating element, we sintered $SiC-ZrB_2$composites by using the spark plasma sintering method. The addition of $ZrB_2$ particles with lower electrical conductivity to the SiC matrices with comparatively higher electrical resistivity lowers the electrical resistivities of the composite material. The $ZrB_2$ particles aggregate to form large particles and 3-1, 3-2, and 3-3 networks, i.e., conduction paths. In our study, about $1-{\mu}m$-sized $ZrB_2$ powders start to form the conduction path at about 10 vol.% of addition, namely the threshold volume. The Joule heating experiment shows that 20 vol.% $ZrB_2$-added SiC heating element has outstanding heating efficiency.
The mechanical and electrical properties of the hot-pressed and annealed $\beta-SiC-ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites were investigated as a function of the liquid forming additives of$Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ Phase analysis of composites by XRD revealed $\alpha-SiC(6H) ZrB_2\; and YAG(Al_5Y_3O_{12})$ The relative density of composites were increased with increased Al2O3+Y2O3 contents. The Flexural strength showed the highest value of 390.6MPa for composites added with 20wt% Al2O3+Y2O3 additives at room temperature. Owing to crack deflection crack bridging phase transition and YAG of fracture toughness mechanism the fracture toughness showed the highest value of 6.3MPa.m1/2 for composites added with 24wt% Al2O3+Y2O3 additives at room temperature. The resistance temperature coefficient showed the value of$ 2.46\times10^{-3}\;, 2.47\times10^{-3},\; 2.52\times10^{-3}/^{\circ}C$ for composite added with 16, 20, 24wt% Al2O3+Y2O3 additives respectively. The electrical resistivity of the composites was all positive temperature coefficient resistance(PTCR) in the temperature range of $256{\circ}C\; to\; 900^{\circ}C$.
Conductive SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites were produced by subjecting a 40:60 (vol%) mixture of zirconium diboride (ZrB2) powder and ${\beta}$-silicon carbide (SiC) matrix to spark plasma sintering (SPS). Sintering was carried out for 5 min in an argon atmosphere at a uniaxial pressure and temperature of 50 MPa and $1500^{\circ}C$, respectively. The composite sintered at a heating speed of $25^{\circ}C$/min and an on/off pulse sequence of 12:2 was denoted as SZ12L. Composites SZ12H, SZ48H, and SZ10H were obtained by sintering at a heating speed of $100^{\circ}C$/min and at on/off pulse sequences of 12:2, 48:8, and 10:9, respectively. The physical, electrical, and mechanical properties of the SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites were examined and thermal image analysis of the composites was performed. The apparent porosities of SZ12L, SZ12H, SZ48H, and SZ10H were 13.35%, 0.60%, 12.28%, and 9.75%, respectively. At room temperature, SZ12L had the lowest flexural strength (286.90 MPa), whereas SZ12H had the highest flexural strength (1011.34 MPa). Between room temperature and $500^{\circ}C$, the SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites had a positive temperature coefficient of resistance (PTCR) and linear V-I characteristics. SZ12H had the lowest PTCR and highest electrical resistivity among all the composites. The optimum SPS conditions for the production of energy-friendly SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites are as follows: 1) an argon atmosphere, 2) a constant pressure of 50 MPa throughout the sintering process, 3) an on/off pulse sequence of 12:2 (pulse duration: 2.78 ms), and 4) a final sintering temperature of $1500^{\circ}C$ at a speed of $100^{\circ}C$/min and sintering for 5 min at $1500^{\circ}C$.
The electrical conductive mechanism and temperature dependence of electrical resistivity of ${\beta}-SiC+ZrB_2$ composites with $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ contents were investigated. The electrical resistivity of hot-pressed composites was measured by the Pauw method from $25^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistivity of the composites showed the PTCR(Positive Temperature Coefficient Resistivity) and follow the electrical conduction model for a homogeneous mixture of two kind of particles with different conductivity. Also, the electrical resistivity versus temperature curves indicate the formation of local chains of $ZrB_2$ particles.
