Properties and Manufacture of $\beta-SiC-ZrB_2$ Composites Densified by Liquid-Phase Sintering(II) (액상소결에 의한 $\beta-SiC-ZrB_2$ 복합체의 제조와 특성(II))

  • The mechanical and electrical properties of the hot-pressed and annealed $\beta$-SiC+39vol. %ZrB2 electroconductive ceramic composites were investigated by adding 1, 2, 3wt% Al2O3+Y2O3(6:4wt%) of the liquid forming additives. In this microstructures, no reactions were observed between $\beta-SiC$ and ZrB2. The relative density is over 90.8% of the theoretical density and the porosity decreased with increasing Al2O3+Y2O3 contents. Phase analysis of the composites by XRD revealed $\alpha-SiC(6H, 4H)$, ZrB2 and $\beta-SiC$(15R). Flexural srength showed the highest of 315.5MPa for composites added with 3wt% Al2O3+Y2O3 additives as room temperature. Owing to crack deflection and crack bridging of fracture toughness mechanism, the fracture toughness showed 5.5MPa.m1/2 and 5.3MPa.m1/2 for composites added with 2wt% and 3wt% Al2O3+Y2O3 additives respectively at room temperature. The area fraction of the elongated SiC grain in the etched surface of sample showed 65% and 65.1% for composite added with 2wt% and 3wt% Al2O3+Y2O3 additives respectively. The electrical resistivity at room temperature. The electrical resistivity of the composites wall all positive temperature coefficient(PTCR) against temperature up to $700^{\circ}C$.

  • The composites were fabricated by adding 30, 35, 40, 45[vol.%] Zirconium Diboride(hereafter, $ZrB_2$) powders as a second phase to Silicon Carbide(hereafter, SiC) matrix. $SiC-ZrB_2$ composites were sintered by Spark Plasma Sintering(hereafter, SPS) in vacuum or argon gas atmosphere. The relative density of SiC+40[vol.%]$ZrB_2$ composites reveal high 99.57[%] in argon gas atmosphere and pressure 50MPa.

  • The effect of pressureless-sintered temperature on the densification behavior, mechanical and electrical properties of the $SiC-ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites was investigated. The $SiC-ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites were pressureless-sintered for 2 hours at temperatures in the range of $1,750{\sim}1,900[^{\circ}C]$, with an addition of 12[wt%] of $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$(6:4 mixture of $Al_2O_3\;and\;Y_2O_3$) as a sintering aid. The relative density and mechanical properties are increased markedly at temperatures in the range of $1,850{\sim}1,900[{^\circ}C]$. The relative density, flexural strength, vicker's hardness and fracture toughness showed the highest value of 81.1[%], 230[MPa], 9.88[GPa] and $6.05[MPa\;m^{1/2}]$ for $SiC-ZrB_2$ composites of $1,900[{^\circ}C]$ sintering temperature at room temperature respectively. The electrical resistivity was measured by the Pauw method in the temperature ranges from $25[{^\circ}C]\;to\;700[{^\circ}C]$, The electrical resistivity showed the value of $1.36{\times}10^{-4},\;3.83{\times}10^{-4},\;3.51{\times}10^{-4}\;and\; 3.2{\times}10^{-4}[{\Omega}{\cdot}cm]$ for SZ1750, SZ1800, SZ1850 and SZ1900 respectively at room temperature. The electrical resistivity of the composites was all PTCR(Positive Temperature Coefficient Resistivity). The resistance temperature coefficient showed the value of $4.194{\times}10^{-3},\;3,740{\times}10^{-3},\;2,993{\times}10^{-3},\;3,472{\times}10^{-3}/[^{\circ}C}$ for SZ1750, SZ1800, SZ1850 and SZ1900 respectively in the temperature ranges from $25[{\circ}C]\;to\;700[{\circ}C]$, It is assumed that because polycrystallines such as recrystallized $SiC-ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites, contain of porosity and In Situ $YAG(Al_5Y_3O_{12})$ crystal grain boundaries, their electrical conduction mechanism are complicated. In addition, because the condition of such grain boundaries due to $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ additives widely varies with sintering temperature, electrical resistivity of the $SiC-ZrB_2$ electroconductive ceramic composites with sintering temperature also varies with sintering condition. It is convinced that ${\beta}-SiC$ based electroconductive ceramic composites for heaters or ignitors can be manufactured by pressureless sintering.

  • Conductive SiC-$ZrB_2$ composites were produced by subjection a 40:60(vol%) mixture of zirconium diborided ($ZrB_2$) powder and ${\beta}$-silicon carbide (SiC) matrix to spark plasma sintering (SPS) under argon atmosphere. Inner diameters of graphite mold were $15mm{\varphi}$ and $20mm{\varphi}$, respectively. The relative densities of $15mm{\varphi}$ and $20mm{\varphi}$ sample were 99.4% and 97.88%, respectively. Reactions between ${\beta}$-SiC and $ZrB_2$ were not observed via x-ray diffraction (hereafter, XRD) analysis. The result of FE-SEM of fracture face of $15mm{\varphi}$ sample was intergranular fracture and that of $20mm{\varphi}$ sample was transgranular fracture. Because the fracture strength of $15mm{\varphi}$ sample was much higher than that of $20mm{\varphi}$ sample. The electrical resistivity, $9.37{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ of $15mm{\varphi}$ sample was higher than that, $6.17{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ of $20mm{\varphi}$ sample because of densification. Although sintering condition of SPS is same. the properties of sintered SiC-$ZrB_2$ compacts were changed according to inner diameter of graphite mold.

A Study on Sintering Properties of a SiC-ZrB2 Composite According to Mold Size of SPS Through Computer Simulation (컴퓨터 시뮬레이션에 의한 SPS의 몰드크기에 따른 SiC-ZrB2 복합체의 소결특성 연구)

  • The computer simulation was performed to confirm distribution of current and power density according to inner diameter of graphite mold of SPS(Spark Plasma Sintering). When the inner diameters of a graphite mold are varied $10mm{\Phi}$, $20mm{\Phi}$, $30mm{\Phi}$ and $40mm{\Phi}$, the more the inner diameter of graphite mold is decreased, the more the current density of punch section is increased. Because the electrical resistivity of the SiC-$ZrB_2$ specimen section($7.77{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$) was lower than the electrical resistivity($6.00{\times}10^{-3}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$) of graphite section, the current density and power density of specimen section was higher than those of graphite section. It is considered that a SiC-$ZrB_2$ composite is sintered by more Joule heat of specimen section than that of mold and punch section. The current and power density distribution of a SiC-$ZrB_2$ composite can be predicted through computer simulation when SPS is conducted, and an electrical resistivity of the SiC-$ZrB_2$ composite is main element of SPS.

In this microstructures, no reactions were observed between $\beta$-SiC and $ZrB_2$, and the relative density is over 90.79% of the theoretical density and the porosity decreased with increasing $Al_2O_3+Y_2O_3$ contents. Phase analysis of the composites by XRD revealed of $\alpha$-SiC(6H, 4H), $ZrB_2$, $Al_2O_3$ and $\beta$-SiC(15R).   • The $\beta$-SiC + $ZrB_2$ ceramic electroconductive composites were pressureless-sintered and annealed by adding 12wt% $Al_2O_3$ + $Y_2O_3$ (6 : 4wt%) powder as a function of sintering temperature. The relative density showed the highest value of 81.1% at 1900$^{\circ}C$ sintering temperature. The phase analysis of the composites by XRD revealed of $\alpha$-SiC(6H), $TiB_2$, $Al_5Y_2O_{12}$ and $\beta$-SiC(15R). Flexural strength showed the highest value of 230 MPa for composites sintered at 1900$^{\circ}C$. The vicker's hardness and the fracture toughness showed the highest value of increased with increasing sintering temperature and showed the highest of 9.88 GPa and 6.05 $MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ at 1900$^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistivity was measured by the Pauw method from 25$^{\circ}C$ to 700$^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistivity of the composites showed the PTCR (Positive Temperature Coefficient Resistivity).

Owing to crack deflection and crack bridging of fracture toughness mechanism, the fracture toughness showed the highest of 5.5328MPa . m$^{1}$2/ for composites added with 2wt% AI$_2$O$_3$+Y$_2$O$_3$ additives at room temperature. But the standard deviation of fracture toughness of specimens decreased with increasing AI$_2$O$_3$+Y$_2$O$_3$ contents and showed the highest of 0.8624 for composite tilth 1wt%, AI$_2$O$_3$+Y$_2$O$_3$additives.

  • The fracture toughness and hardness of 62 %$SiO_2-19%ZrO_2-9%Na_2O-10%B_2O_3$(wt%) glass ceramics system were investigated. As a result of DTA study to find crystallization temperature, an exothermic peak near $820^{\circ}C$ was observed. The optimum nucleation temperature and the optimum crystal growth temperature were determined by XRD and SEM analysis, and were approximately $650^{\circ}C$, $840^{\circ}C$ respectively. The fracture toughness of this zirconia glass ceramics was determined by Vickers Indentation Method. The hardness value was not changed with increasing of the heat treatment temperature, but fracture toughness value was increased up to $1.8 MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ at $840^{\circ}C$, with increasing of heat treatment temperature.

  • Fabrication of various carbide fibers from carbon fibers and elementary powders of Ti, Zr, Nb, Zi, W, B, and Mo by self-propagating high temperature synthesis was attempted. It was found the almost pure phase of TiC, ZrC, NbC, SiC, $B_4$C, and $Mo_2$C carbides were successfully produced. The three types of morphologies were ob-served, TiC, ZrC, NbC, and $B_4$C had a hollow-type fibrous shape. SiC had fiber shape consisting of smaller particles and fine whiskers. WC and $Mo_2$C had non-fibrous shapes. The reason for the different morphologies was explained. The formation mechanism of hollow fibers was suggested.
