  • Efficiency is one of the most important factors in cryptographic systems. Cheon et al. proposed a new exponent form for speeding up the exponentiation operation in discrete logarithm based cryptosystems. It is called split exponent with the form $e_1+{\alpha}e_2$ for a fixed element ${\alpha}$ and two elements $e_1$, $e_2$ with low Hamming weight representations. They chose $e_1$, $e_2$ in two unbalanced subsets $S_1$, $S_2$ of $Z_p$, respectively. We achieve efficiency improvement making $S_1$, $S_2$ balanced subsets of $Z_p$. As a result, speedup for exponentiations on binary fields is 9.1% and speedup for scalar multiplications on Koblitz Curves is 12.1%.

  • Objectives: This study analyzed the physical-chemical behavior of 2 bulk fill resin composites (BFCs; Filtek Bulk Fill [FBF], and Tetric-N-Ceram Bulk Fill [TBF]) used in 2- and 4-mm increments and compared them with a conventional resin composite (Filtek Z250). Materials and Methods: Flexural strength and elastic modulus were evaluated by using a 3-point bending test. Knoop hardness was measured at depth areas 0-1, 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 mm. The translucency parameter was measured using an optical spectrophotometer. Real-time polymerization kinetics was analyzed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Results: Flexural strength was similar among the materials, while TBF showed lower elastic modulus (Z250: 6.6 ± 1.3, FBF: 6.4 ± 0.9, TBF: 4.3 ± 1.3). The hardness of Z250 was similar only between 0-1 mm and 1-2 mm. Both BFCs had similar hardness until 2-3 mm, and showed significant decreases at 3-4 mm (FBF: 33.45 ± 1.95 at 0-1 mm to 23.19 ± 4.32 at 3-4 mm, TBF: 23.17 ± 2.51 at 0-1 mm to 15.11 ± 1.94 at 3-4 mm). The BFCs showed higher translucency than Z250. The polymerization kinetics of all the materials were similar at 2-mm increments. At 4-mm, only TBF had a similar degree of conversion compared with 2 mm. Conclusions: The BFCs tested had similar performance compared to the conventional composite when used in up to 2-mm increments. When the increment was thicker, the BFCs were properly polymerized only up to 3 mm.

  • The present study aims to characterize a cDNA encoding zebrafish thyroid hormone receptor $\alpha{1}$ $(zTR\alpha{1)}$ in order to investigate its possible role in the early stage of embryonic development. A mobility shift assay showed that $zTR\alpha{1}$ overexpressed in COS7 cells specifically bound to thyroid hormone response element (TRE). In addition, the specific interaction of anti-rat $TR\alpha{1}$ antibodies with $zTR\alpha1$/TRE complexes demonstrated that the cDNA clone encoded zebrafish thyroid hormone receptor $\alpha{1}$. Transient cotransfection assays showed that $zTR\alpha{1}$ repressed the transcription which was induced by retinoic acid (RA), a well-characterized embryonic morphogen. These results suggest that zTRal may be involved in regulating the RA-induced gene transcription during early embryonic development.

  • In this report, we describe an optimized method for generation of ephA8 BAC transgenic mice expressing the lacZ reporter gene under ephA8 regulatory sequences. First, we constructed a targeting vector that carries a 1.2 kb ephA8 DNA upstream of its first exon, a lacZ expression cassette, a kanamycin cassette, and a 0.7 kb ephA8 DNA downstream of its first exon. Second, the targeting vector was electroporated into cells containing the ephA8 BAC and pKOBEGA, in which recombinases induce a homologous recombination between the ephA8 BAC DNA and the targeting vector. Third, the FLP plasmid expressing the Flipase was electroporated into these bacteria to eliminate a kanamycin cassette from the recombinant BAC DNA. The appropriate structures of the modified ephA8 BAC DNA were confirmed by Southern analysis. Finally, BAC transgenic mouse embryos were generated by pronuclear injection of the recombinant BAC DNA. Whole mount X-gal staining revealed that the lacZ reporter expression is restricted to the anterior region of the developing midbrain in each transgenic embryo. These results indicate that the ephA8 BAC DNA contains most, if not all, regulatory sequences to direct temporal and spatial expression of the lacZ gene in vivo.

  • The sliding wear behaviors of three different compositions of novel low temperature degradation-free zirconia/alumina (LTD-free Z/A) composites were examined in a ceramic-ceramic contact pair. The wear tests were performed by using a pin-on-disk type wear tester in a linear reciprocal sliding motion with a line contact in both dry and bovine serum lubricated conditions at room temperature. From the results of dry sliding wear tests, Z/A#1((5.3Y, 4.6Nb)-TZP/80 $vol\%Al_2O_3$) showed the best wear resistance among three kinds of LTD-free Z/A composites. For the bovine serum lubricated sliding wear tests, wear was too little to be measured for all kinds of Z/A composites. These novel LTD-free Z/A composites having excellent wear resistance demonstrated a potential as the alternative materials for the ceramic-ceramic contact pairs of femoral head and acetabular liner in total hip replacement.

  • During the analyzing processes of the compounds, some researchers are puzzled by the analytical signals for some TSNAs (with or without splitting peaks at various pHs and temperatures). In this work, a detailed theoretical study of structural and thermal properties of the $E/Z$ isomers of TSNAs and the corresponding protonated structures was performed using DFT methods. The calculations showed that the $E$ isomers are almost stable than $Z$ isomers, while the $Z$ isomers would be more stable when in protonation. The calculated results predicted the possibility of separation of their $E$ and $Z$ isomer forms and also showed that protonation affects the dipole moment of molecules significantly (0.1-0.5 to 0.7-2.1 Debye). The calculations agreed well with the experiments that the split-up of the HPLC signal for TSNAs into two peaks are very sensitive to the pH and temperature of the mobile-phase.

  • Galaxy overdensities such as galaxy clusters and superclusters are the largest gravitationally bound systems in the Universe. Since they contain many different levels of local densities, they are excellent places to test galaxy evolution models in connection to the environments. The environment studies of galaxies at z ~ 1 are important because the environmental quenching seems to be an important mechanism to reduce star formation activities in galaxies at z < 1. However, there have been not many studies about high redshift galaxy clusters at z ~ 1 because of the lack of wide and deep multi-wavelength data. We have used the multi-wavelength data from the UKIDSS DXS (J and K band), the SWIRE (4 IRAC bands), and the PAN-STARRS (g, r, i, z, y bands) in the ELAIS-N1 field. We identified galaxy cluster candidates at 0.2 < z < 1.6 using the multi-wavelength data. We found several superclusters where cluster candidates are concentrated on few tens of Mpc scale. Interestingly, some of the supercluster candidates consist of galaxy clusters which have high blue galaxy. We will present high redshift galaxy cluster and supercluster candidates in ELAIS-N1 field and galaxy properties in different environments including dense clusters and fields.

  • In order to identify the origin and nature of the spilled oil in the potential source, we analyzed the pattern of alkyi PAM(Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons) in fuel standard and environmental samples. Alkyl PAM patterns are used for fuel-type identification in weathered environmental samples. Detection of alkyl PAH was achieved by operation CC/MS in the SIM mode. We chose ions of naphthalene(m/z 128), C1-naphthalene(m/z 142), C2-naphthalene(m/z 156), C3-naphthalene(m/z 170), C4-naphthalene(m/z 184) for the comparison of this pattern according to the type of fuel. We analyzed tile pattern of alkyl PAH in neat gasoline, kerosene, diesel, and JP-8, and in groundwater samples which were collected in monitoring wells. The distribution map of alkyl-naphthalene shows different patterns among four different fuel types (gasoline, kerosene, diesel, and JP-8). Particularly, tile distribution map of kerosene and JP-8 is found to be of value in identifying fuel type in that the difference is clear. Therefore distribution patterns of alkyl-PAH compounds provide another useful tool for fuel-type identification of petroleum fuels.

  • Primordial germ cells (PGCs) were manipulated as part of the system to produce transgenic chickens. PGCs were isolated from the germinal crescent of developmental stage 6 to 8 donor emhryos of the Korean Native Ogol Chickens (KNOC). These PGCs were transfected with plasmid DNA containing the lac Z gene by liposome mediated transfection methods. The lac Z gene was transfected and expressed in the PGCs. These transfected PGCs were injected into the germinal crescent of White Leghorn embryos (stage 6 to 8). The injected transfected PGCs migrated via the circulatory system into the future gonad and expression observed in the gonads of 3 day old chick. Of the 47 embryos and 3 day old chickens, one positive PGCs gonad from sacrificed young chickens was detected by appearance of blue cells. Plasmid DNA with the foreign gene was incorporated into the population of germ cells in the gonad. These results demonstrate that PGCs can he transfected and then transferred for colonization into the gonad, and show the potential to ultimately manipulate the genetic material of the chicken gernline.

  • Impact of food plant on reproductive and commercial parameters in Antheraea mylitta, a polyphagous insect of economic importance was studied upon feeding the insect larvae on the same host plants for six continuous generations. A. mylitta larvae were fed upon Terminalia tomentosa, Terminalia arjuna and Zizyphus jujuba and restricted them to the same host plant for six generations to document the quantitative improvement in reproductive and commercial parameters. The parameters showed significant improvement in all the host plants studied over their respective controls. Fecundity among the reproductive parameters was highly improved than others (85.9% in T. tomentosa; 58% in T. arjuna and 49.7% in Z. jujuba). Likewise in commercial parameters, the shell weight in male showed the highest improvement (by 52.9%, 45.8% and 42.1% in T. tomentosa; T. arjuna and Z. jujuba respectively). On the other hand, the shell ratio percentage in female recorded the lowest improvement. The values for all characters were recorded a decline in T. arjuna and Z. jujuba fed ones over T. tomentosa, except that of shell ratio percentage in female has registered an increase in Z jujuba fed. The study thus revealed the comparative superiority of T. tomentosa over T. arjuna and Z. jujuba.
