Mechanical properties of Y2O3-containing tetragonal ZrO2 polycrystals(Y-TZP) were investigated. Several additives were used to modify the hardness and fracture toughness of Y-TZP. The effects of these individual additives were discussed and their interactions were also analysed. Each additive, such as CoO, Fe2O3, MnO2 was found to deteriorate the mechanical properties of Y-TZP when it was used singly. But the fracture toughness of Y-TZP was significantly improved when these additives and Al2O3 were added in combination at a certain ratio. The addition of CoO, Fe2O3 and MnO2 into Y-TZP resulted in the more complex behavior of fracture toughness and hardness. The specimen with 1.5 wt%-Fe2O3, 3.0 wt% -Al2O3 and 1.5 wt%-CoO showed the monoclinic to tetragonal phase ratio of 18% and the highest toughness of $10.8MPa{\cdot}m1/2$ with Vickers hardness of 1201 kgf/mm2. However, the toughness decreased as the ratio increased and macrocracks developed beyond the ratio of 25%. Sample No. 16 is improved high Physical and Mechanical Properties.
In this work, we studied a fluorite structure oxides: Yttria stabilized zirconia, (YSZ); Gd doped $CeO_2$ (GDC); erbia stabilized $Bi_2O_3$ (ESB); Zr doped erbia stabilized $Bi_2O_3$ (ZESB); Ca doped erbia stabilized $Bi_2O_3$ (CESB) in the temperature range of 250 to $600^{\circ}C$ using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). As is well known, grain boundary blocking effect was observed in YSZ and GDC. However, there is no grain boundary effect on ESB, ZESB, and CESB. The Nyquist plots of these materials exhibit a single arc at low temperature. This means that there is no space charge effect on ${\delta}-Bi_2O_3$. In addition, impedance data were analyzed by using the brick layer model. We indirectly demonstrate that grain boundary ionic conductivity is similar to or even higher than bulk ionic conductivity on cubic bismuth oxide.
The effect of sintering aids on the sinterability for silcion nitride has been studied by hundreds workers. However the effect of sintering aids on the machinability as the own trobles which is the major barrier for the field applications of the ceramic components has not been fully studied. in this study the contents of Al2O3 and Y2O3 in silicon nitride were varied from 0 to 8 wt% respectively. The physical and mechanical properties of the silcion nitride were measured. The optimal microstructure of silicon nitride balls with the excellent machinability by adding with various contents of sintering aids was studied by MGF(magnetic-fluid grinding)technique. An attempt to figure out how the mechanical properties influence the machinability of silicon-nitride ball was made.
Gd1-xSrxMnO3(0$\leq$X$\leq$0.6) as the cathode for solid oxide fuel cell was synthesized by citrate process and studied for its crystal structure, electrical conductivity, thermal expansion coefficient (TEC), and investigated reactivity with 8 mol% yttria stabilized zirconia(8YSZ) or Ce0.8Gd0.2O1.9 (CGO). The crystal structure of Gd1-xSrxMnO3 changed from orthorhombic (0$\leq$X$\leq$0.3) through cubic (0.4$\leq$X$\leq$0.5) to tetragonal structure (X=0.6). When Sr contents was increased, the electrical conductivity of Gd1-xSrxMnO3 was inthose of La1-xSrxMnO3, 8YSZ and CGO if Sr content was above 30mol%. TEC of Gd1-xSrxMnO3 was increased with Sr content. After heat treatment at 1300$^{\circ}C$ for 48 hours, reaction product of Gd1-xSrxMnO3 and 8YSZ was SrZrO3. However CGO had no reaction product with Gd1-xSrxMnO3.
New process development of nuclear fuel fabrication for nuclear power plant was attempted by induction plasma technology with yttria-stabilized-zirconia ($\textrm{ZrO}_{2}$-$\textrm{Y}_{2}\textrm{O}_{3}$)powder, similar to $\textrm{UO}_{2}$, in the respect of melting point and physicochemical characteristics. Extent of powder melting was affected greatly by plasma plate power and particle size. Being optimized such as, sheath gas composition, probe position, particle size and spraying distance, dense deposit of 97.91% T.D. with deposition rate 20mm/min was attained at the condition of 120/20$\ell$/min of Ar/$\textrm{H}_{2}$ flow rate, 80kw of plate power, 8cm of probe position, 200Torr of chamber pressure and 18cm of spraying distance. The pellet of 96.5% of theoretical density was formed with homogeneity and nice exterior view at the best condition of deposition experiments, and the possibility of new nuclear pellet fabrication process was confirmed. The main and interrelated effects on deposit density were assessed by ANOVA(Ana1ysis of Variance).
A full retention of the tetragonal phase with coarse grains $(50\~60\;{\mu}m)$ was possible with the specimen $ZrO_2-1.9\;mol\%\;Y_2O_3$. In these coarse grains, $\{101\}_t$ annealing twins were frequently observed, although they do not exist in the usual fine grained specimens. The morphology and growth rate of the isothermally formed individual products are studied at an optical microscopic level. The habit planes of both products are also identified by performing two-surface trace analysis on the grains whose orientations are determined by the Electron Back Scattering Pattern (EBSP) method. The morphologies of isothermal martensite were well-defined thin plates and lenticular types. The growth rate in their longitudinal directions was quite slow and temperature-dependent. A two-surface trace analysis, incorporated with the EBSP method, identified the habit planes near $\{013\}_c$, in agreement with previous reports obtained from TEM works.
The adhesion characteristics of the thermoplastic resins such as PE, PP PVC, PET and PS were investigated on the surfaces of conventional steel (SS41), steel (SS41P) treated with ultrasonic waves and the SS41P coated with several ceramic powders (SS41PC) by the plasma spray. Alumina (Al$_2$O$_3$), alumina titania (Al$_2$O$_3$95%, TiO$_2$ 5%) and zirconia yttria (ZrO$_2$ 95%, $Y_2$O$_3$5% ) were used for the materials plasma spray The morphologies, surface hardness, surface roughness, and contact angles on SS41, SS41P, and SS41PC were examined. The tensile shear strength and peel strength of the polymers which were attached to the surfaces of ceramics coated on SS41P also were measured. The tensile shear strength and peel strength of polymers adhered to ceramic surface coated on steel were found to be stronger than those of conventional steel. The tensile shear strength and peel strength of the polymers adhered on the surfaces of ceramics coated steel increased in the following order PE > PET > PP > PS > PVC. The high adhesion strength of PE may be attributed to the surface roughness and its anchor effect on the ceramic surface.
Considerable research efforts have been explored attempting to enhance the thermal durability of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) at the high operating temperatures of gas turbines. In this study, the suspension plasma spray (SPS) process was applied to produce TBCs with a segmented structure by using an yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) suspension. Four different experiment sets were carried out by controlling the ratio between surface roughness of the bond coat and feed stock size ($R_a/D_{50}$) in order to examine the effect of $R_a/D_{50}$ ratio on the microstructure of SPS-prepared coatings. When the $R_a/D_{50}$ had a high value of 11.8, a deposited thick coating turned out to have a cone-type columnar microstructure. In contrast, at the low $R_a/D_{50}$ values of 2.9 and 0.18, a deposited thick coating appeared to have a dense, vertically-cracked microstructure. However, with the very low $R_a/D_{50}$ value of 0.05 the coating was delaminated.
In this study, 3 mol% yttria-tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP) nanoparticles were synthesized by the glycothermal method under various reaction temperatures and times. The co-precipitated precursor of 3Y-TZP was prepared by adding $NH_4OH$ to starting solutions, and then the mixtures were placed in an autoclave reactor. Tetragonal yttria-doped zirconia nanoparticles were afforded through a glycothermal reaction at a temperature as low as $220^{\circ}C$, using co-precipitated gels of $ZrCl_4$ and $YCl_3{\cdot}6H_2O$ as precursors and 1,4-butanediol as the solvent. The synthesized 3Y-TZP particles were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman spectroscopy. The 3Y-TZP particles have a stable tetragonal phase only at glycothermal temperatures above $200^{\circ}C$. To investigate phase transition, the 3Y-TZP particles were heat treated from 400 to $1400^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. Raman analysis indicated that, after heat treatment, the tetragonal phase of the 3Y-TZP particles remained stable. The results of this study, therefore, suggest that 3Y-TZP powders can be prepared by the glycothermal method.
After adding 8Y-ZrO2 powders to 3Y-ZrO2 powders at ratios of 0, 33, 50, 67, and 100% by weight, the mixed yttria-stabilized zirconia specimens were fabricated into thin plate using tape~casting method and then sintered at 150$0^{\circ}C$ for 4h in air. The crystalline structure, microstructure and electrical properties of the sintered zirconia thin plates were investigated by using X-ray diffractometer, scanning electron microscope and impedance analyser, respectively. At the temperatures higher than 75$0^{\circ}C$, the sintered thin plate with 33% 8Y-ZrO2 content shows higher mechanical properties and lower electrical resistivity than 8Y-ZrO2 thin plate which is generally used as an electrolyte for solid oxide fuel cells. This is due to the fact that the zirconia thin plates with low 8Y-ZrO2 content maintain the slope of low temperature region up to high temperatures, whereas at temperatures higher than 50$0^{\circ}C$ the slope decrease in the zirconia thin plates with high 8Y-ZrO2 content.
