Photodecomposition of Concentrated Ammonia over Nanometer-sized TiO2, V-TiO2, and Pt/V-TiO2 Photocatalysts

  • To enhance the photodecomposition of concentrated ammonia into N2, Pt/V-TiO2 photocatalysts were prepared using solvothermal and impregnation methods. Nanometer-sized particles of 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mol% V-TiO2 were prepared solvothermally, and then impregnated with 1.0 wt% Pt. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) peaks assigned to V2O5 at 30.20 (010) and Pt metal at 39.80 (111) and 46.20 (200) were seen in the 1.0 wt% Pt/ 10.0 mol% V-TiO2. The particle size increased in the order: pure TiO2, V-TiO2 and Pt/V-TiO2 after thermal treatment at 500 °C, while their surface areas were in the reverse order. On X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the bands assigned to the Ti2p3/2 and Ti2p1/2 of Ti4+-O were seen in all the photocatalysts, and the binding energies increased in the order: TiO2 < Pt/V-TiO2 < V-TiO2. The XPS bands assigned to the V2p3/2 (517.85, 519.35, and 520.55 eV) and V2p1/2 (524.90 eV) in the V3+, V4+ and V5+ oxides appeared over V-TiO2, respectively, while the band shifted to a lower binding energy with Pt impregnation. The Pt components of Pt/ V-TiO2 were identified at 71.60, 73.80, 75.00 and 76.90 eV, which were assigned to metallic Pt 4f7/2, PtO 4f7/2, PtO2 4f7/2, and PtO 4f5/2, respectively. The UV-visible absorption band shifted closer towards the visible region of the spectrum in V-TiO2 than in pure TiO2 and; surprisingly, the Pt/V-TiO2 absorbed at all wavelengths from 200 to 800 nm. The addition of vanadium generated a new acid site in the framework of TiO2, and the medium acidic site increased with Pt impregnation. The NH3 decomposition increased with the amount of vanadium compared to pure TiO2, and was enhanced with Pt impregnation. NH3 decomposition of 100% was attained over 1.0 wt% Pt/1.0 mol% V-TiO2 after 80 min under illumination with 365 nm light, although about 10% of the ammonia was converted into undesirable NO2 and NO. Various intermediates, such as NO2, -NH2, -NH and NO, were also identified in the Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra. From the gas chromatography (GC), FT-IR and GC/mass spectroscopy (GC/MS) analyses, partially oxidized NO and NO2 were found to predominate over V-TiO2 and pure TiO2, respectively, while both molecules were reduced over Pt/V-TiO2.

Solid-State $^{51}V$ NMR and Infrared Spectroscopic Study of Vanadium Oxide Supported on $TiO_2-ZrO_2$

  • Vanadium oxide catalyst supported on TiO2-ZrO2 has been prepared by adding Ti(OH)4-Zr(OH)4 powder to an aqueous solution of ammonium metavanadate followed by drying and calcining at high temperatures. The char-acterization ofthe prepared catalysts was performed using solid-state 51V NMR and FTIR.In thecase ofcalci-nation temperature at 773 K, vanadium oxide was in a highly dispersed state for the samples containing low loading V2O5 below 25 wt %, but for samplescontaining high loading V2O5 equal to or above 25 wt %, vana-dium oxidewas well crystallized due to the V2O5 loading exceeding the formation of monolayer on the surface of TiO2-ZrO2.The ZrV2O7 compound was formed through the reactionof V2O5 and ZrO2 at 773-973 K, where-as the V3Ti6O17 compound was formedthrough the reaction of V2O5 and TiO2 at 973-1073 K. The V3Ti6O17 compound decomposed to V2O5 and TiO2 at 1173 K, which were confirmed by FTIR and 51V NMR.

A Study on the Acid Property and the Activity of Xylene Oxidation Catalyst (자일렌 산화반응 촉매의 산특성과 반응성에 관한 연구)

  • The acid properties of $V_2O_5-TiO_2/SiO_2$ catalysts and the partial oxidation of o-xylene into phthalic anhydride had been investigated in order to relate the acid property of catalyst to the catalytic activity. $V_2O_5$ had both weak (V=O) and strong (V-O-V) acid sites which gave pyridine desorption peaks at $230^{\circ}C$ and $300^{\circ}C$, respectively, and the amount of weak acid sites at $230^{\circ}C$ decreased with the increase of calcination temperature. On the other hand, the amount of weak acid sites increased considerably by increasing the amount of $TiO_2$ to the $V_2O_5-TiO_2/SiO_5$, and the maximum value was shown at 20 and higher mole % of $TiO_2$ with respect to $SiO_2$. In the oxidation of o-xylene, $V_2O_5-TiO_2/SiO_2$ enhandced more the total conversion and the selectivity to phthalic anhydride than $V_2O_5/SiO_2$, and the higher $TiO_2$ ratio to $V_2O_5$ increased the total conversion but could not change the selectivity to phthalic anhydride. Weak acid sites (V=O) led o-xylene to partial oxidation producing phthalic anhydride by adsorbing o-xylene weakly, while acid sites (V-O-V) led it to total oxidation producing CO and $CO_2$ by adsorbing it strongly.

  • The crystalline structure of $LaTi_{0.8}V_{0.2}O_3$ solid solutions, prepared by arc-melting palletized mixtures of predried $La_2O_3,\;V_2O_3,\;TiO_2$, and Ti, was investigated by transmission electron microscopy and computer image simulation. Computer image simulations were performed by the multislice method for a wide range of sample thickness and defocusing value. The structure of $LaTi_{0.8}V_{0.2}O_3$ was determined as a $GdFeO_3$-type orthorhombic $(a\approx5.58{\AA},\;b\approx7.89{\AA},\;and\;c\approx5.58{\AA})$ with a space group $P_{nma-}$. No evidence of ordering of Ti and V atoms in $SaTi_{0.8}V_{0.2}O_3$ was found.

Characteristics of Disc-Type V2O5 Catalyst Impregnated Ceramic Filters for NOx Removal (질소산화물 제거를 위한 디스크형 바나디아 촉매담지 세라믹필터의 특성)

  • The performance of disk-type catalytic filters impregnated by TiO$_2$ or TiO$_2$-3Al$_2$O$_3$ㆍ 2SiO$_2$ supports and V$_2$O$_{5}$ catalyst was evaluated for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with ammonia as a reductant. XRD, FT -IR, BET and SEM were used to characterize the catalytic filters prepared in this work. Optimal V$_2$O$_{5}$ loading and reaction temperature for V$_2$O$_{5}$/TiO$_2$ catalytic filters were 3-6 wt.% and 350-40$0^{\circ}C$ at GHSV 14,300 $hr^{-1}$ in the presence of oxygen, respectively. With increasing the V$_2$O$_{5}$ loading from 0.5 to 6 wt%, NO conversion increased from 24 to 96% at 40$0^{\circ}C$ and 14.300$hr^{-1}$, and maintained at 80% over in the V$_2$O$_{5}$ loading range of 3-6 wt.% and then dropped at V$_2$O$_{5}$ loading of 7wt.% over. In comparing V$_2$O$_{5}$/ TiO$_2$ and V$_2$O$_{5}$/ TiO$_2$-3Al$_2$O$_3$ㆍ2SiO$_2$ catalytic fillers, which have same 3wt.% V$_2$O$_{5}$ loading, the V$_2$O$_{5}$/ TiO$_2$-3A1$_2$O$_3$ㆍ2SiO$_2$ catalytic filter showed higher activity than V$_2$O$_{5}$/ TiO$_2$ catalytic filter, but higher differential pressure drops owing to its low air permeability. low air permeability.

  • Arc-melted Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-4Fe and Ti-(1,2) Si alloys were oxidized at 700, 800, 900 and $1000^{\circ}C$ in air. The oxidation resistance of Ti-4Fe was comparable to that of Ti-6Al-4V, while the oxidation resistance of Ti-(1,2) Si was superior to that of Ti-6Al-4V. Ti-2Si displayed the best oxidation resistance among the four alloys, but failed after oxidation at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 17h. The oxide scale formed on Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-4Fe and Ti-(1,2)Si consisted of ($TiO_2$ and a small amount of $Al_2$$O_3$), ($TiO_2$ and a small amount of dissolved iron), and ($TiO_2$ plus a small concentration of amorphous $SiO_2$), respectively. The oxide grains of the surface scale of the four alloys were generally fine and round.

  • In order to suggest an efficient catalyst systems for NOx reduction of flue gases from industrial boilers, $TiO_2$ supported $WO_3-V_2O_5, V_2O_5$ and $WS_2$ catalysts were tested for the performances of NOx reduction at high reactin temperature range (250-500$^\circ$C) using a simulated flue gas system. It was found that while the proposed $WO_3/TiO_2$ and $WO_3-V_2O_5/TiO_2$ catalysts showed a significant high NOx reduction efficiency at about 350-400$^\circ$C, the conventional commercial catalyst of $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ showed a significant drop in NOx reduction efficiency due to the excessive $NH_3$ oxidation. From the measurement of surface acidities of those catalysts, it was found that the acidity are well correlated with the activities of NOx reduction. The reason of high activity of $WO_3$ series catalysts at high reaction temperature seems due to the low value of surface excess oxygen compared with that of $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ seems equivalent to the acid site of that catalyst.

  • V2O5-TiO2 catalysts were prepared by various methods. V2O5-TiO2 were prepared by sol-gel method with different drying conditions (aerogel and xerogel), and V2O5 supported on TiO2 obtained by sol-gel method with precipitation-deposition method and impregnation method. The performance of the V2O5-TiO2 catalysts was investigated for the selective oxidation of hydrogen sulfide in the stream containing both ammonia and excess water. All the catalysts showed good dispersion of vanadium and they had high H2S conversion with no or little production of sulfur dioxide. The V2O5-TiO2 aerogel catalyst prepared by sol-gel method with drying under super critical condition had the highest surface area which led to better catalytic activity compared to those by other synthesis methods.

  • 습도 감지소자의 물질 중 이온형의 대표적인 물질인 TiO$_{2}$ 습도 센서와 TiO$_{2}$에 V$_{2}$O$_{5}$를 첨가한 TiO$_{2}$-V$_{2}$O$_{5}$ 세라믹 습도센서를 제작하고 V$_{2}$O$_{5}$함량의 변화, 열처리 온도 및 열처리 시간에 따른 습도감지 특성 및 동작온도에 따른 특성 등을 조사하였으며 XRD와 SEM으로 그 원인을 규명하였다. TiO$_{2}$에 V$_{2}$O$_{5}$를 첨가하면 선형성이 좋아지는 것을 알 수 있었고 제작한 시료 중 V$_{2}$O$_{5}$의 함량이 1mol% 열처리 조건이 1000.deg.C, 1시간인 소자는 동작온도 40.deg.C에서 약 95%의 감도를 나타내었다.

Electrochemical Characterization of Hybrid Semiconductor-Based Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (혼성반도체로 제조된 염료감응형 태양전지의 전기화학적 특성)

  • In this study, the $TiO_{2}/V_{2}O_{5}$ hybrid semiconductors were prepared by mixing $TiO_{2}$ and $V_{2}O_{5}$, and a subsequent smash process to reduce the recombination of electron and improve the efficiency of solar cells. Dye-sensitized solar cells were constructed using the resultant hybrid semiconductor, and their electrochemical properties were also investigated. The photocurrent-voltage curve obtained with the cells indicated a significant increase in the efficiency from 2.9 to 5.7% by the factor of 2 compared to the result obtained only with $TiO_{2}$. It is believed that the introduction of $V_{2}O_{5}$ effectively transport electrons in the $TiO_{2}$ conduction band to FTO glass and suppress recombination with the dye and/or the electrolyte, thus yielding an efficient performance of the dye sensitized solar cell. The impedance values also indicated a decrease of resistance in the interface of $TiO_{2}$/dye/electrolyte supporting the constructive contributions of the smashed $TiO_{2}/V_{2}O_{5}$ hybrid semiconductors for the efficiency.
