Characterization of Methylene Blue Decomposition on Fe-ACF/TiO2 Photocatalysts Under UV Irradiation with or Without H2O2

  • The photocatalysts of Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ compositeswere prepared by the sol-gel method and characterized by BET, XRD, SEM, and EDX. It showed that the BET surface area was related to adsorption capacity for each composite. The SEM results showed that ferric compound and titanium dioxide were distributed on the surfaces of ACF. The XRD results showed that Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ composite only contained an anatase structure with a Fe mediated compound. EDX results showed the presence of C, O, and Ti with Fe peaks in Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ composites. From the photocataytic degradation effect, $TiO_2$ on activated carbon fiber surface modified with Fe (Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$) could work in the photo-Fenton process. It was revealed that the photo-Fenton reaction gives considerable photocatalytic ability for the decomposition of methylene blue (MB) compared to non-treated ACF/$TiO_2$, and the photo-Fenton reaction was improved by the addition of $H_2O_2$. It was proved that the decomposition of MB under UV (365 nm) irradiation in the presence of $H_2O_2$ predominantly accelerated the oxidation of $Fe^{2+}$ to $Fe^{3+}$ and produced a high concentration of OH radicals.

  • $BaTiO_3$ particles were prepared using $Ba(OH)_2{\cdot}8H_2O$ and $Ti(OC_2H_5)O_4$ by the hydrothermal method and their characteristics treated at the various temperatures have been investigated. This prepared $BaTiO_3$ powder includes a very small amount of $H_2O$ and $OH^-$. By increasing the treated temperature from $200^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$, the mean particle size was accordingly increased from $0.022{\mu}m$ to $0.072{\mu}m$ and the tetrogonality(c/a)was increased from 1.02 to 1.2 so that the phase transition to tetroganal takes place. $BaTiO_3$ sintered at $1250^{\circ}C$ after heat treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ for 3 hrs showed a specific dielectric constant of 8120 and surface activation energy was 9680 kcal/mol.

Fabrication of $TiO_2-CeO_2$ Composite Membranes with Thermal Stability

  • Ceramic membranes of the supported $TiO_2-CeO_2$ were prepared by dip-coating method on an $\alpha-Al_2O_3$ porous substrate. The mean pore diameter of an alumina support was 0.125 um. The mean particle diameter of $TiO_2-CeO_2$ top layer varied with firing temperature and ranged from 20 to 85 nm. The thermal stability of the composite membranes was studied from their surface microstructure after calcination at $600-900^{\circ}C$. The supported $TiO_2-CeO_2$ composite membranes exhibited much higher heat resistance than the $TiO_2$ membrane.

  • $TiO_2$ fine powders were synthesized via hydrolysis reaction of titanium isopropoxide in isopropanol solvent and the reaction rates were studied by use of UV spectroscopic method. The reactions were controlled to proceed to pseudo-first-order reaction in the presence of excess water in isopropanol solvent. The rate constants which varied with temperature and concentration of water were calculated by Guggenheim method. Reactions using $D_2O$ were also carried out to determine the catalytic character of water. n value of water molecules in transition state and the thermodynamic parameters showed that the reaction proceeded by $S_N2$ mechanism. $TiO_2$ powders synthesized in this reaction were almost spheric forms and had average particle size of $0.3{\mu}m$ diameter.

  • CdS-$TiO_2$ nano-composite sol was prepared by the sol-gel method in organic solvents at room temperature and further hydrothermal treatment at various temperatures to control the physical properties of the primary particles. Again, CdS-$TiO_2$ composite particulate films were made by casting CdS-$TiO_2$ sols onto $F:SnO_2$ conducting glass and then heat-treatment at $400^{\circ}C$. Physical properties of these 61ms were further controlled by the surface treatment with $TiCl_4$, aqueous solution. The photo currents and hydrogen production rates measured under the experimental conditions varied according to the $CdS/[CdS+TiO_2]$ mole ratio and the mixed-sol preparation method. For $CdS-TiO_2$ composite sols prepared in IPA, CdS particles were homogeneously surrounded by $TiO_2$ particles. Also, the surface treatment with $TiCl_4$ aqueous solution caused a considerable improvement in the photocatalytic activity, probably as a result of close contacts between the primary particles by the etching effect of $TiCl_4$. It was found that the photoelectrochemical performance of these particulate films could be effectively enhanced by this approach.

  • The BaTiO$_3$+10wt%Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ ceramics were prepared by conventional mixed oxide method. The structural and dielectric properties of the BaTiO$_3$+10wt%Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ ceramics with the sintering temperature were investigated. Increasing the sintering temperature, the 2$\theta$ value of BaTiO$_3$peaks were shifted to the higher degree and intensity of the BaTiO$_3$and BaNbO$_3$peaks were increased. In the BaTiO$_3$+10wt%Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ ceramics sintered at 135$0^{\circ}C$ and 1375$^{\circ}C$, the grain was fine and uniform. Increasing the sintering temperature, the pore was decreased and the dielectric constant was increased. In the BaTiO$_3$+10wt%Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ ceramics sintered at 1375$^{\circ}C$, the dielectric constant and dielectric loss were 5424, 0.02 respectively.ctively.

Study on the Photocatalytic Characteristic and Activity of Cu2O/TiO2 Heterojunction Prepared by Ultrasonification (초음파 합성 적용 Cu2O/TiO2 이종접합 소재의 특성 및 활성도 평가에 관한 연구)

  • In the current study, a Cu2O/TiO2 photoinduced nanocomposite materials prepared by ultrasonification method was evaluated the photocatalytic oxidation efficiency of volatile organic compounds (BTEX) under visible-light irradiation. The results of XRD confirmed the successful preparation of photoinduced nanocomposite materials. However, diffraction peaks belonging to TiO2 were not confirmed for the Cu2O/TiO2. The possible reason for the absence of Cu2O peak is their low content and small particle size. The result of uv-vis spectra exhibited that the fabricated Cu2O/TiO2 can be activated under visible light irradiation. The FE-SEM/EDS and TEM showed the formation of synthesized nanocomposites and componential analysis in the undoped TiO2 and Cu2O/TiO2. The photocatalytic oxidation efficiencies of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and o-xylene with Cu2O/TiO2 were higher than undoped TiO2. According to light sources, the average oxidation efficiencies for BTEX by Cu2OT-0.5 were exhibited in the orer of 8 W day light > violet LEDs > white LEDs. However, the photocatalytic oxidation efficiencies normalized to supplied electric power were calculated to be in the following order of violet LEDs > white LEDs > 8 W day light, indicating that the LEDs could be a much more energy efficient light source for the photo-oxidation of gaseous BTEX using Cu2O/TiO2.

Characteristics of Nano-Size Au Fine Particles Doped TiO2 Thin Films by Sol-Gel Method (졸-겔법에 의한 나노크기 Au 미립자 분산 TiO2 박막의 특성)

  • Nano-size Au particle doped $TiO_2$ films were prepared with $Ti(OC_3H_7^i)_4$, polyvinylpyrrolidone(PVP), $HAuCl_4$ and $C_3H_7OH$ etc. by sol-gel method. $TiO_2$ gel films were obtained by the dip-coating method on the $SiO_2$ glass substrates, and then heat-treated at $700^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. The thickness of $TiO_2$ films were $0.7\~1.8\;{\mu}m$. It was found that the thickness of films prepared from PVP containing solution was about $2\~8$ times higher values than that of thin films without PVP. The size of Au particles doped in the films were about $350\~750\;nm$. Nano-size Au particle dispersed $TiO_2$ films showed high absorption peak at visible region 450nm, which made them good candidates for non-linear optical materials and photo-catalytic materials. The contact angle of $TiO_2$ film for water was $12.5^{\circ}$, and therefore it is clear that $TiO_2$ films have very high hydrophilic properties and the self-cleaning effects.

  • $TiO_2$ is widely being used as a semiconductor electrode for DSSC. Anti-recombination property and surface area of $TiO_2$ give an important influence to the DSSC efficiency. In this study, $TiO_2$ electrode was fabricated on FTO using screen printing method. Various overlayers were coated on them by dip coating in solution of saturated $Ba(NO_3)_2$, $Mg(NO_3)_2$ and $N_{2}O_{6}Sr$. They reduced the recombination of electrons from photo excited state of Ru dye. The atmospheric plasma treatment was applied to both the $TiO_2$ and each overlayer coated $TiO_2$ surfaces to improve contact ability with dye. We prepared four samples, one sample has bare $TiO_2$ surfaces to improve contact ability with dye. We prepared four samples, one sample has bare $TiO_2$ electrode and the other samples consist of each overlayer coated $TiO_2$ electrodes. We used XRD, FE-SEM, J-V, IPCE and EIS in order to investigate characteristic.
