  • In this study the electrical conductivity of excess BaO in $BaTiO_3$ was measured to investigate the relationship between defects and solubility in the temperature range of $900^{\circ}C$ to $1300^{\circ}C$ under various oxygen partial pressure. First of all, quenched $BaTiO_3$ powders of various Ba/Ti ratios were analysed by X-ray diffraction to confirm whether second phase is formed or not. As the results, we observed the solubility of BaO in the temperature range of $1200^{\circ}C$ to $1400^{\circ}C$, and it was also found that the conductivity minima move to lower $PO_2$ with increasing excess BaO within solubility limit.

  • In this work, we first applied the chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) process to the planarization of ferroelectric film in order to obtain a good planarity of electrode/ferroelectric film interface. $Bi_{3.25}La_{0.75}Ti_{3}O_{12}$ (BLT) ferroelectric film was fabricated by the sol-gel method. However, there have been serious problems in CMP in terms of repeatability and defects in patterned wafer. Especially, dishing & erosion defects increase the resistance because they decrease the interconnect section area, and ultimately reduce the lifetime of the semiconductor. Cross-sections of the wafer before and after CMP were examined by Scanning electron microscope(SEM). Process characteristics of non-dishing and erosion were investigated.

  • Selective laser melting (SLM) is an additive manufacturing process by melting metallic powders and stacking into layers, and can product complex shapes or near-net-shape (NNS) that are difficult to product by conventional processes. Also, SLM process is able to raise the efficiency of production by creating a streamlined manufacturing process. For manufacturing in SLM process using Ti-6Al-4V powder, analysis of microstructural evolution and evaluation of mechanical properties are essential because of rapid melting and solidification process of powders according to high laser power and rapid scan speed. In addition, it requires a post-processing because the soundness and mechanical properties are degraded by defects such as pore, un-melted powder, lack-of-fusion, etc. In this study, hot isostatic press (HIP) was conducted as a post-processing on SLM-printed Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Microstructure of post-processed Ti-6Al-4V alloy was compared to as-built Ti-6Al-4V, and the evolution of quasi-static (Vickers hardness, room temperature tensile characteristic) and dynamic (high-cycle fatigue characteristic) mechanical properties were analyzed.

  • Understanding the mechanistic details of heterogeneous catalytic reactions will provide a way to tune the selectivity between various competing reaction channels. In this regard, catalytic decomposition of alcohols over the rutile $TiO_2$(110) surface as a model oxide catalyst has been studied to understand the reaction mechanism employing the temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) technique. The $TiO_2$(110) model catalyst is found to be active toward alcohol dehydration. We find that the active sites are bridge-bonded oxygen vacancies where RO-H heterolytically dissociates and binds to the vacancy to produce alkoxy (RO-) and hydroxyl (HO-). Two protons adsorbed onto the bridge-bonded oxygen atoms (-OH) readily react with each other to form a water molecule at ~500 K and desorb from the surface. The alkoxy (RO-) undergoes decomposition at higher temperatures into the corresponding alkene. Here, the overall desorption kinetics is limited by a first-order decomposition of intermediate alkoxy (RO-) species bound to the vacancy. We show that detailed analysis on the yield and the desorption temperatures as a function of the alkyl substituents provides valuable insights into the reaction mechanism. After the catalytic role of the oxygen vacancies has been established, we employed x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to further study the surface electronic structure related to the catalytically active defective sites. The defect-related state in valence band has been related to the chemically reduced $Ti^{3+}$ defects near the surface region and are found to be closely related to the catalytic activity of the $TiO_2$(110) surface.

  • Additive manufacturing by electron beam melting is an affordable process for fabricating near net shaped parts of titanium and its alloys. 3D additive-manufactured parts have various kinds of voids, lack of fusion, etc., and they may affect crack initiation and propagation. Post process is necessary to eliminate or minimize these defects. Hot isostatic pressing (HIP) is the main method, which is expensive. The objective of this paper is to achieve an optimum and simple post heat treatment process without the HIP process. Various post heat treatments are conducted for the 3D-printed Ti-6Al-4V specimen below and above the beta transus temperature ($996^{\circ}C$). The as-fabricated EBM Ti-6Al-4V alloy has an ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite structure and transforms into the ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ duplex phase during the post heat treatment. The fatigue strength of the as-fabricated specimen is 400 MPa. The post heat treatment at $1000^{\circ}C/30min/AC$ increases the fatigue strength to 420 MPa. By post heat treatment, the interior pore size and the pore volume fraction are reduced and this can increase the fatigue limit.

  • Various ceramic particulate such as TiC, $TiB_2$, $Al_2O_3$ reinforced SUS431 matrix composites were successfully fabricated by a novel liquid pressing infiltration process. Microstructures of the SUS431 composite were analyzed to determine manufacturability of composites. $Al_2O_3$-SUS431 composite had lots of defects due to poor wettability between the $Al_2O_3$ and steel matrix. On the other hand, TiC was uniformly dispersed in the SUS431 matrix than $TiB_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ due to good wettability and interfacial properties.

  • Statement of problems. In an attempt to reduce screw loosening, dry lubricant coatings such as pure gold or tefron have been applied to the abutment screw. However, under repeated tightening and loosening procedures, low wear resistance and adhesion strength of coating material produced free particles on the surface of abutment screw and increased frictional resistance resulting in screw tightening problems. Purpose. The aim of this study was to compare friction coefficient, adhesion strength, vickers hardness and evaluate coating surface of titanium alloy specimens coated with TiN(titanium nitride), ZrN(zirconium nitride) and WC(tungsten carbide). Material and method. Titanium alloy(Ti-6Al-4V) discs of 12mm in diameter and 1mm in thickness divided into 4 groups. TiN, ZrN and WC was coated for the specimens of 3 groups respectively, and those of 1 group were not coated. Each group was made up of 4 specimens. In this study, sputtering method was used among the PVD(Physical Vapor Deposition) techniques available for TiN, ZrN and WC coatings. Friction coefficient, adhesion strength, vickers hardness and coating surface of 4 groups were measured. Results. 1. For all three coating conditions, friction coefficient was significantly decreased. Especially, ZrN coated surface showed the lowest value. $TiN(0.39{\pm}0.02)$, $ZrN(0.24{\pm}0.01)$, $WC(0.31{\pm}0.03)$. 2. TiN coating showed the highest adhesion strength, however ZrN coating had the lowest value. $TiN(25.3N{\pm}1.6)$, $ZrN(14.8N{\pm}0.6)$, $ WC(18.4N{\pm}0.7)$. 3. Vickers hardness of all three coatings was remarkably increased as compared with that of none coated specimen. TiN coating had the highest Vickers hardness, however WC coating showed the lowest value. $TiN(1865.2{\pm}33.8)$, $ZrN(1814.4{\pm}18.6)$, $WC(1008.5{\pm}35.9)$. 4. The ZrN or WC coated specimen showed a homogeneous and smooth surface, however the rough surface with defects was observed for TiN coating. Conclusions. When TiN, ZrN and WC coating applied to the abutment screw, frictional resistance would be reduced, as a result, the greater preload and prevention of the screw loosening could be expected.

  • RF sputtering process was applied to produce thin hydroxyapatite(HAp) films on Ti-6Al-4V alloy substrates. The effects of different heat treatment conditions on the hardness between HAp thin films and Ti-6Al-4V alloy substrates were studied. Before deposition, the Ti-6Al-4V alloy substrates were heat treated for 1h at $850^{\circ}C\;under\;3.0{\times}10^{-3}torr$, and after deposition, the HAp thin films were heat treated for 1h at $400^{\circ}C,\;600^{\circ}C\;and\;800^{\circ}C$ under the atmosphere, and analyzed FESEM-EDX, FTIR, XRD, nano-indentor, micro-vickers hardness, respectively. Experimental results represented that the surface defects of thin films decreased by relaxation of internal stress and control of substrate structure followed by heat treatment of substrates before the deposition, and the HAp thin films on the heat-treated substrates had higher hardness than none heattreated substrates before the deposition, and the hardness properties of HAp thin films and Ti-6Al-4V alloy substrates appeared independent behavior, and the hardness of HAp thin films decreased by formation of $VTiO_3(OH),\;{\theta}-Al_{0.32}V_2O_5,\;Al_{0.33}V_2O_5$.

  • The diffusion barrier property of 100-nm-thick titanium nitride (TiN) film between Cu and Si was investigated using sheet resistance measurements, etch-pit observation, x-ray diffractometry, Auger electron spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The TiN barrier fails due to the formation of crystalline defects (dislocations) and precipitates (presumably Cu-silicides) in the Si substrate which result from the predominant in-diffusion of Cu through the TiN layer. In contrast with the case of Al, it is identified that the TiN barrier fails only the in-diffusion of Cu because there is no indication of Si pits in the Si substrate. In addition, it appears that the stuffing of TiN does not improve the diffusion barrier property in the Cu/TiN/Si structure. This indicates that in the case of Al, the chemical effect that impedes the diffusion of Al by the reaction of Al with $TiO_{2}$ which is present in the grain boundaries of TIN is very improtant. On the while, in the case of Cu, there is no chemical effect because Cu oxides, such as $Cu_{2}O$ or CuO, is thermodynamically unstable in comparison with $TiO_{2}$. For this reason, it is considered that the effect of stuffing of TiN on the diffusion barrier property is not significant in the Cu/ TiN/Si structure.

  • The effects of Sr and (Ti-B) additives on the tensile properties of AC4A recycled (35% scrap content) aluminum alloys were investigated. An acicular morphology of the eutectic Si phase of as-cast specimens was converted to a fibrous morphology upon the addition of Sr. Moreover, morphology of the Sr modified eutectic Si phase became finer due to a T6 heat treatment. The grain size of the ${\alpha}$-solid solution was decreased by the addition of (Ti-B) additives. Depending on the treatment conditions of the as-cast specimens, i.e., no addition, a Sr addition and a (Ti-B)+Sr addition, the tensile strength levels of the as-cast specimens were 182, 192, and 204MPa, respectively. The corresponding strengths of T6 heat-treated specimens were 293, 308, and 318MPa. Elongations of the as-cast specimens were 2.2, 3.1, and 5.6%, and the corresponding elongations of the T6 heat-treated specimens were 4.6, 6.1, and 7.6%. The percentage of the reduced section area in the tensile specimens was also increased by the Sr and (Ti-B) additives. Sr and (Ti-B) additives changed the microstructure and the distribution of defects in the castings, resulting in an improvement of the tensile properties of AC4A aluminum alloys. According to our test results, recycled (35% scrap content) AC4A aluminum alloy met all of the KS requirements of the tensile strength and elongation values of AC4A aluminum alloy except for the elongation value of the one specimen condition, in this case the as-cast no-addition condition.
