  • Steroids are commonly used in patients with eosinophilic meningitis caused by A. cantonensis infections. The mechanism steroids act on eosinophilic meningitis remains unclear. In this mouse experiments, expressions of 14-3-3 isoform ${\beta}$ and ${\gamma}$ proteins significantly increased in the CSF 2-3 weeks after the infection, but not increasedin the dexamethasone-treated group. Expression of 14-3-3 ${\beta}$, ${\gamma}$, ${\varepsilon}$, and ${\theta}$ isoforms increased in brain meninges over the 3-week period after infection and decreased due to dexamethasone treatment. In conclusion, administration of dexamethasone in mice with eosinophilic meningitis decreased expressions of 14-3-3 isoform proteins in the CSF and in brain meninges.

  • In this study, zeolitic materials at $Na_2CO_3/CFA$ ratio of 0.6 - 1.8 were synthesized from coal fly ash from a thermal power plant using a fusion/hydrothermal method. The zeolitic materials were found to have cubic crystals structure and X-ray diffraction (XRD) peaks of Na-A zeolite by XRD and SEM analysis. When the zeolitic materials were synthesized from the coal fly ash, the XRD peaks of the zeolitic materials at $Na_2CO_3/CFA$ ratios of 0.9-1.8 had the same location as the XRD peaks of commercial Na-A zeolite. The XRD peaks of the Na-A zeolite ($Na_{12}Al_{12}Si_{12}O_{48}27.4H_2O$) were confirmed in the $2{\theta}$ in the range of 7.18-34.18. However, it was also confirmed that peaks of $CaCO_3$, an impurity inhibiting synthesis of Na-A zeolite from CaO and $Na_2CO_3$ in the coal fly ash, occurred in the XRD peaks of the zeolitic materials at $Na_2CO_3/CFA$ ratio of 1.5-1.8. The crystallinities of the zeolitic materials tended to increase gradually within the $Na_2CO_3/CFA$ ratio range of 0.6-1.8.

  • Flow through a scaled horizontal axis marine current turbine was numerically simulated after validation and the turbine design was optimized. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code Ansys-CFX 16.1 for numerical modeling, an in-house blade element momentum (BEM) code for analytical modeling and an in-house surrogate-based optimization (SBO) code were used to find an optimal turbine design. The blade-pitch angle (${\theta}$) and the number of rotor blades (NR) were taken as design variables. A single objective optimization approach was utilized in the present work. The defined objective function was the turbine's power coefficient ($C_P$). A $3{\times}3$ full-factorial sampling technique was used to define the sample space. This sampling technique gave different turbine designs, which were further evaluated for the objective function by solving the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations (RANS). Finally, the SBO technique with search algorithm produced an optimal design. It is found that the optimal design has improved the objective function by 26.5%. This article presents the solution approach, analysis of the turbine flow field and the predictability of various surrogate based techniques.

  • Background: Although cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) is reported to have positive effects on mental functions such as depression and sleep improvement, detailed studies regarding awakening, attention and concentration among brain waves reflecting brain activity are lacking. Objective: To examine the effects of cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) on various electroencephalograms (EEGs) reflecting brain activities. Design: Randomized controlled clinical trial (single blind) Methods: This study selected 30 healthy adult women in their 20s who volunteered for this experiment. A total of 30 subjects were randomly assigned to three groups (Sham group, 0.5 Hz CES group, and 100 Hz CES group). EEGs were measured before and after the single CES, and the results were compared and analyzed. Results: The relative theta, alpha, and gamma waves indicated no significant differences in the interaction effects between time and group. The relative fast alpha wave only showed significant differences in the interaction effects between time and group in P4. The relative slow beta wave only indicated statistically significant differences in the interaction effects between time and group in T3 and T4. The relative mid and fast beta waves showed statistically significant differences in the interaction effects between time and group in all areas. Conclusions: These results suggest that a CES of 0.5 Hz awakens consciousness and has a positive influence on brain activity, while a CES of 100 Hz has a positive influence on thinking activity accompanying mental load during concentrating on one subject.

  • An experimental study of biofilm nitritation system for high-strength ammonium wastewater has been carried out to examine the temperature effect on different organic and solid concentration. Operating temperature varied from $35^{\circ}C$ to $15^{\circ}C$. The influent N concentration of identical three reactors was adjusted to about $300mg\;NH_4-N/L$. A control unit fed with a synthetic wastewater, while the others were fed with reject water which is consisted of the supernatant of both digester and thickener. The results indicated that nitrite accumulation was stable in temperature range of $35^{\circ}C$ to $25^{\circ}C$. However, nitritation was significantly reduced at below $20^{\circ}C$. Free ammonia (FA) and free nitrous acid (FNA) were major inhibitors to the nitrite oxidizer for nitrite accumulation in lower temperature. From the estimation of temperature coefficient (${\Theta}$) of biofilm and suspended nitritation system, biofilm nitritation system could absorb the negative temperature effect compared with suspended nitritation system.

  • The barrier heights of the internal rotations for ethyl halides calculated by ab initio methods differ from those of experiments by more than 0.2 kcal/mol. The use of basis sets larger than the $6-31G^{\ast}$ set and the inclusion of correlation do not improve the agreement between the calculated and experimental values. The zero-point vibration corrections are substantial in the HF calculations with $6-31G^{\ast}$ basis sets, but become negligible in the MP2 calculations with $6-311G^{{\ast}{\ast}}$ basis sets for $C_2H_5F\;and\;C_2H_5Cl$. It is shown that the rigid rotor approximation and the assumed shape of the potential curve as a cos2${\theta}$ curve could also be the sources of discrepancies between calculated and experimental values. Higher order perturbation corrections narrow the gap between experimental and theoretical values, but there still remains about 10% overestimate of 0.3 kcal/mol. Optimized geometries from the HF and MP2 calculations are in good agreement with those from experiments. Dipole moments calculated from the MP2 densities show slightly better agreement with experiments than those from the HF densities.

  • Layered $K_2NiF_4$type ($C_nH_{2n+1}NH_3)_2PbCl_4$(n=6, 8 and 10) system, or alkylammonium tetrachloroplumbate compound, has been synthesized from $PbCl_2$ and $C_nH_{2n+1}NH_3Cl$ solutions under argon ambient pressure for 12hrs at $90^{\circ}C$. The crystal structure of the compound has been analyzed using X-ray powder diffaction in the range of $5^{\circ}{\leq}2{\theta}{\leq}55^{\circ}$, and all samples assigned to an orthorhombic system. Local distances of the Pb-Cl bond have been determined by Pb $L_{III}$-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The vibration modes of alkylammonium chains and the absorpton peaks of an excition have been examined by FT-IR and UV-Vis. reflectance spectra, respectively. The phase transition temperatures of the compounds have been studied by using DSC. According to the thermal analysis, two phase transition temperatures have been observed in the compositons of n=8 and 10.

  • The structure of cholesteryl isobutyrate, $(CH_3)_2CHCOOC_{27}H_{45}$, was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Cholesteryl isobutyrate crystallized monoclinic space group $P2_1$, with a = 15.115 (8)${\AA}$, b = 9.636 (5)${\AA}$, c = 20.224 (9)${\AA}$, ${\beta}$ = 93.15 (5)$^{\circ}$, z = 4, $D_c = 1.03 g/cm^3 $and Dm= 1.04 g/$cm^3$. The intensity data were measured for the 3417 reflections, within $sin{\theta}/{\lambda} = 0.59{\AA}^{-1}$, using an automatic four-circle diffractometer and graphite monochromated Mo-$K_{\alpha}$ radiation. The structure was solved by fragment search Patterson methods and direct methods and refined by full-matrix least-squares methods. The final R factor was 0.129 for 2984 observed reflections. The two symmetry-independent molecules (A) and (B) are almost fully extended. The molecules are in antiparallel array forming monolayers with thickness $d_{100}$ = 15.2${\AA}$, and molecular long axes are nearly parallel to the [$\bar{1}$01] directions. The two distinct molecules form separate stacks with almost the same orientations, but with differing degrees of steroid overlap. Thers is a close packing of cholesteryl groups within the monolayers. The packing type is similar to those of cholesteryl hexanoate and cholesteryl oleate.

  • Lack of sleep time increases risks of fatigue, hypomnesis, decreased emotional stability, indigestion, and dementia. The risks can be reduced by providing eyelid-warming, inducing sleep and improving sleep quality. However, effective warming temperature to an person varies depending on physical condition and the individual. The various types of frequencies can be identified in brain wave from a person and amount of frequencies is also changed continuously before and after sleep. Therefore we can identify the user's sleep stage with brain wave, namely EEG. Effective sleep induction is possible if warming temperature to a person is controlled based on EEG. In this paper, we propose customized warming control techniques based on EEG for a efficient and effective sleep induction. As an experiment, sleep induction effects of standard sleep mask and customized temperature control techniques sleep mask are compared. EEG data and warming temperature were measured in 100 experiments. At customized warming control techniques, experiments showed that the ratio of alpha and theta waves increased by 3.21%p and the time to sleep decreased by 85 seconds. It will contribute to effective sleep induction and performance verification methods in customized sleep mask systems.
