Green phosphors $K_2BaW_2O_8:Tb^{3+}$(1.0 mol%) were synthesized by solid state reaction method. Differential thermal analysis was applied to trace the reaction processes. Three endothermic values of 95, 706, and $1055^{\circ}C$ correspond to the loss of absorbed water, the release of carbon dioxide, and the beginning of the melting point, respectively. The phase purity of the powders was examined using powder X-ray diffraction(XRD). Two strong excitation bands in the wavelength region of 200-310 nm were found to be due to the ${WO_4}^{2-}$ exciton transition and the 4f-5d transition of $Tb^{3+}$ in $K_2BaW_2O_8$. The excitation spectrum presents several lines in the range of 310-380 nm; these are assigned to the 4f-4f transitions of the $Tb^{3+}$ ion. The strong emission line at around 550 nm, due to the $^5D_4{\rightarrow}^7F_5$ transition, is observed together with weak lines of the $^5D_4{\rightarrow}^7F_J$(J = 3, 4, and 6) transitions. A broad emission band peaking at 530 nm is observed at 10 K, while it disappears at room temperature. The decay times of $Tb^{3+}$$^5D_4{\rightarrow}^7F_5$ emission are estimated to be 4.8 and 1.4 ms, respectively, at 10 and 295 K; those of the ${WO_4}^{2-}$ exciton emissions are 22 and 0.92 ${\mu}s$ at 10 and 200 K, respectively.
$Tb^{3+}$ or $Eu^{3+}$ or $Ce^{3+}$-doped $CaYAlO_4$ phosphor were synthesized by solid-state method. $CaYAlO_4:Tb^{3+}$ is shown that the $Tb^{3+}$-doping concentration has a significant effect on the $^5D_4/^5D_3{\rightarrow}7F_J$ (J=6,...,0) emission intensity of $Tb^{3+}$. The $CaYAlO_4:Tb^{3+}$ phosphors show tunable photoluminescence from blue to yellow with the change of doping concentration of $Tb^{3+}$ ions. The $CaYAlO_4:Eu^{3+}$ phosphors exhibit a red-orange emission of $Eu^{3+}$ corresponding to $^5D_0$, $_{1,2}{\rightarrow}^7F_J$ (J=4,...,0) transitions. The $CaYAlO_4:Ce^{3+}$ phosphors show a blue emission due to $Ce^{3+}$ ions transitions from the 5d excited state to the $^2F_{5/2}$ and $^2F_{7/2}$ ground states. The decay time of $CaYAlO_4:Tb^{3+}$ phosphors decrease from 1.33 ms to 0.97 ms as $Tb^{3+}$ concentration increases from 0.1 mol% to 7 mol%. The decay time of $CaYAlO_4:Eu^{3+}$ phosphors increase from 0.94 ms to 1.17 ms as $Eu^{3+}$ concentration increases from 1 mol% to 9 mol%.
Two types of Tb- and Na-substituted green phosphors $Ca_{(1-1.5x)}WO_4:Tb_x^{3+}$: and $Ca_{(1-2x)}WO_4:Tb_x^{3+},Na_x^+$ were synthesized with various x values, using a solid-state reaction. The former phosphors contained both substitutional and vacancy point defects, while the later had only substitutional defects. X-ray diffraction results showed that the main diffraction peak, (112), was centered at $2{\theta}=28.72^{\circ}$ and indicated that there was no basic structural deformation caused by substitutions or vacancies. The photoluminescence emission and photoluminescence excitation spectra revealed the optical properties of trivalent terbium ions, $Tb^{3+}$. Typical transitions, $^5D_3{\rightarrow}^7F_6,\;^7F_5,\;^7F_4$ and $^5D_4{\rightarrow}^7F_6,\;^7F_5,\;^7F_4,\;^7F_3$, and cross relaxations were observed. Subtle differences in the photoluminescence of green phosphors were observed as a result of the point defects. The FT-IR spectra indicated that some of the ungerade vibrational modes had shifted positions and changed shapes, spreading out over a wide range of frequencies. This change can be attributed to the different masses of $Tb^{3+}$ and $Na^+$ ions and $V_{Ca}$" vacancies compared to $Ca^{2+}$ ions. The gerade normal modes of the Raman spectra exhibited subtle differences resulting from point defects in $Ca_{(1-1.5x)}Tb_xWO_4$ and $Ca_{(1-2x)}Tb_xNa_xWO_4$.
We uniformly coated Eu(III)- and Tb(III)-doped yttrium oxide onto the surface of $SiO_2$ spheres and then characterized them by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction crystallography and UV-Visible absorption. 2D and 3D photoluminescence image map profiles were reported for the core-shell type structure. Red emission peaks of Eu(III) were observed between 580 to 730 nm and assigned to $^5D_0{\rightarrow}^7F_J$ (J = 0 - 4) transitions. The green emission peaks of Tb(III) between 450 and 650 nm were attributed to the $^5D_4{\rightarrow}^7F_J$ (J = 6, 5, 4, 3) transitions. For annealed samples, Eu(III) ions were embedded at a $C_2$ symmetry site in $Y_2O_3$, which was accompanied by an increase in luminescence intensity and redness, while Tb(III) was changed to Tb(IV), which resulted in no green emission.
$YAlO_3:Tb{_x}^{3+}$ has been synthesized by a combustion process and the concentration x of Tb was varied from 0.001 and 0.05 mol% per mole of YAlO3. The energy transfer of $^5D_3{\rightarrow}^7F_6$(385nm) and $^5D_4{\rightarrow}^7F_5$(544nm) transitions on the $YAlO_3:Tb{_x}^{3+}$(x =0.001, 0.05) have been investigated by using decay curves. The energy transfer mechanism was explained by Inokuti and Hirayama model. The results of calculation and fitting showed that values of n are 6.11(x=0.01) and 6.13(x=0.005). These indicate that the energy transfer mechanism between $Tb^{3+}$ ions is dipole-dipole interaction.
$BaMoO_4:Tb^{3+}$ phosphor powders were synthesized with different concentrations of $Tb^{3+}$ ions using the solid-state reaction method. XRD patterns showed that all the phosphors, irrespective of the concentration of $Tb^{3+}$ ions, had tetragonal systems with two main (112) and (004) diffraction peaks. The excitation spectra of the $Tb^{3+}$-doped $BaMoO_4$ phosphors consisted of an intense broad band centered at 290 nm in the range of 230-330 nm and two weak bands. The former broad band corresponded to the $4f^8{\rightarrow}4f^75d^1$ transition of $Tb^{3+}$ ions; the latter two weak bands were ascribed to the $^7F_2{\rightarrow}^5D_3$ (471 nm) and $^7F_6{\rightarrow}^5D_4$ (492 nm) transitions of $Tb^{3+}$. The main emission band, when excited at 290 nm, showed a strong green band at 550 nm arising from the $^5D_4{\rightarrow}^7F_5$ transition of $Tb^{3+}$ ions. As the concentration of $Tb^{3+}$ increased from 1 to 10 mol%, the intensities of all the emission lines gradually increased, approached maxima at 10 mol% of $Tb^{3+}$ ions, and then showed a decreasing tendency with further increase in the $Tb^{3+}$ ions due to the concentration quenching effect. The critical distance between neighboring $Tb^{3+}$ ions for concentration quenching was calculated and found to be $12.3{\AA}$, which indicates that dipole-dipole interaction was the main mechanism for the concentration quenching of the $^5D_4{\rightarrow}^7F_5$ transition of $Tb^{3+}$ in the $BaMoO_4:Tb^{3+}$ phosphors.
The Tb3+ or Eu3+-doped Lu2Gd1Ga2Al3O12 phosphor were fabricated by funace at 1500 ℃ for 12 h using a solid state reaction. The XRD (X-ray diffraction_Panalytical X'Pert Pro) and FE-SEM (field emission scanning electron microscope) are measured to confirm the crystalline structure and surface morphology of the phosphor. The Tb3+-doped Lu2Gd1Ga2Al3O12 phosphor emits the lights in 470~650 nm wavelength range due to transitions from 5D4 to 7Fj. Therefore, it shows the green region in the CIE chromaticity diagram under both UV and X-rays excitations. The Eu3+-doped Lu2Gd1Ga2Al3O12 phosphor emits the lights in 550~750 nm wavelength range because of 5Di to 7Fj. The emission is confirmed to be in the red region using the CIE chromaticity diagram. The Tb3+ or Eu3+-doped Lu2Gd1Ga2Al3O12 phosphor shows the characteristic f-f transition with a long decay time, which is about several milliseconds. They have the high efficiency of light emission for X-ray because of their high effective Z number (Zeff = 58.5) and density. Therefore, they are very much promising phosphors for X-ray imaging application in medical fields.
Crystal structures of lanthanide complexes with NTA (NTA = nitrilotriacetate) are reported. The complexes of $[Ln(NTA)_2{\cdot}H_2O]^{3-}$ (Ln = Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb and Ho) crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Pccn. In the structures, the trivalent lanthanide ions are completely encapsulated via coordination to the two nitrogen atoms and the six carboxylate oxygen atoms of the two NTA ligands, and one water oxygen atoms. The complexes form a slightly distorted capped-square-antiprism polyhedron. Of the complexes, $[Eu(NTA)_2{\codt}H_2O]^{3-}$,\;[Tb(NTA)_2{\cdot}H_2O]^{3-}\;and\;[Dy(NTA)_2{\cdot}H_2O]^{3-}$ excited at the 325 He-Cd line produce very characteristic luminescence features, arising mostly from the f ${\to}$ f transitions. The absolute quantum yields of these complexes are determined at room temperature. Surprisingly, the $[Dy(NTA)_2{\cdot}H_2O]^{3-}$ complex is more luminescent than the $[Eu(NTA)_2{\cdot}H_2O]^{3-}\;and\;[Tb(NTA)_2{\cdot}H_2O]^{3-}$ complexes.
