This study was conducted to determine the effect of mugwort powder on meat composition and sensory characteristics in finishing gilts $(LY{\times}D)$. Twenty pigs (75kg) were randomly allotted to four treatments. Mugwort powder was added to final concentrations of 0(C), 0.5(T1), 1.0(T2), and 1.5%(T3) in the basal diet. Pigs were fed with the specified diet for 50 days. Carcass characteristics and cooking loss were not significantly affected by mugwort powder supplementation. The WHC and cooking loss of T2 and T3 were not significantly different than the control. However, the pH values for meat from gilts fed the T1 and T3 diets were significantly lower than the control (p<0.05). Shear force values of fresh meat were highest with the T3 diet (p<0.05), while the shear force values of cooked meat were significantly lower than the control with the T2 and T3 diets. Texture values of hardness, brittleness, gumminess, chewiness, and adhesiveness were significantly higher with the T3 diet (p<0.05), however values for cohesiveness and springiness were not significantly affected by mugwort powder supplementation. These results indicate that the feeding of mugwort powder improves the shear force of cooked meat from gilts fed the T3 diet, however the carcass, WHC and cooking loss characteristics in gilts are not affected by mugwort powder supplementation.
In this study, we investigated the antioxidant and anti-aging activities of Schisandra chinensis seed fractions by adding them to UVB-irradiated HaCaT cells and analyzing the suppression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). An electron-donating assay, ABTS radical scavenging assay, and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay showed that the ethyl acetate fraction of S. chinensis seed (SCEAf) has scavenging activities. A collagenase inhibition activity assay showed that SCEAf had inhibitory effects of over 92.3% at $500{\mu}g/ml$ concentration. An MTT assay was performed to determine the cytotoxicity of SCEAf in HaCaT cells and the results showed that SCEAf increased cellular viability in a concentration-dependent manner. In addition, SCEAf was found to increase the viability of cells irradiatged by UVB $50mJ/cm^2$. To examine the anti-aging effects of SCEAf on HaCaT cells irradiated with UVB $50mJ/cm^2$, the expression of MMP-1 and -3 was analyzed by Western blotting and reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction. The results showed that MMP-1 and -3 proteins and mRNA levels were downregulated in a concentration-dependent manner in response to SCEAf. These results suggest that SCEAf can prevent aging and alleviate aging symptoms by inhibiting collagenase activity in skin keratinocytes damaged by UVB. Therefore, S. chinensis seeds may have the potential for use as functional ingredients with anti-aging effects in the cosmetic and food industries.

Purpose : Preoperative radiotherapy has been used to induce tumor regression and allow complete resection of rectal cancer with a sphincter preservation surgery. This study was performed to determine the effectiveness of preoperative radiotherapy for $T_2,\;T_3$ distal rectal carcinoma. Materials and Methods : From November 1995 to June 1997, fifteen patients with invasive distal rectal cancer were treated with preoperative radiotherapy followed by sphincter preservation surgery. Classification by preoperative T stage consisted of 7 $T_2$ and 8 $T_3$ tumors. Radiation therapy was delivered with 6 MV and 15 MV linear accelerator, at 1.8 Gy fractions for 5 days per week. Total radiation doses were 45 Gy to 50.4 Gy (median : 50.4 Gy). Sphincter preservation surgery was peformed $4\~6$ weeks after the completion of radiotherapy. Median follow-up was 22 months (range : $16\~37\;months$). Results : One patient $(6.7\%)$ had a complete pathologic response. Comparing the stage at the diagnostic workup with the pathologic stage, tumor downstaging of T stages occurred in 11 of 15 patients $(73.3\%)$ and $N_1$ stages occurred in 2 of 5 patients $(40\%)$. No patient developed progressive disease undergoing treatment. Two patients suffered local recurrence at 7 and 20 months, and one a distant metastasis at 30 months. No grade 3 or 4 toxicity was observed. Conclusion : Our experience suggests that preoperative radiotherapy followed by sphincter preservation surgery is well tolerated, and can significantly reduce the tumor burden for $T_2\;T_3$ distal rectal cancer.
The purpose of this analysis is to compare 2D T1 FEE and 3D T1 THRIVE for demonstration of the pancreas. A total of 85(45 men, 40 women; 58 years) PACS network datum were analysis clinically indicated pancreas MRI at 1.5 T. The SNRs and CNRs of 3D T1 THRIVE(SNR: $46.42{\pm}0.67$, CNR: $28.16{\pm}0.50$) showed significantly higher values than those from 2D T1 FEE(SNR: $53.84{\pm}1.20$, CNR: $35.48{\pm}0.70$), p<0.05, The image quality of the 3D T1 THRIVE($2.63 {\pm}0.14$) was significantly superior to that with the 2D T1 FEE($2.2{\pm}0.05$), but 3D T1 THRIVE revealed several artifacts resulting in poor quality. In conclusion, The 3D T1 THRIVE technique with a 1.5 T resulting in improved SNRs, CNRs and image quality was demonstrated.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of duck skin on cooking loss, emulsion stability, pH, color, protein solubility, texture profile analysis (TPA), apparent viscosity, and sensory characteristics of press type duck ham with different ratio of duck breast meat and duck skin. Five duck ham formulations were produced with the following compositions: T1 (duck breast 70% + duck skin 30%), T2 (duck breast 60% + duck skin 40%), T3 (duck breast 50% + duck skin 50%), T4 (duck breast 40% + duck skin 60%), and T5 (duck breast 30% + duck skin 70%). The cooking loss and fat separation were lower in T1, and the total expressible fluid separations were lower in T1 and T2 than others. The pH ranged from 6.48 to 6.59, with the highest values in T4 and T5. T5 had the highest CIE $L^*$-value, and T1 and T2 had the highest CIE $a^*$-values; however, CIE $b^*$-values did not differ significantly between the duck ham samples. The protein solubility and TPA (hardness, springiness, cohesiveness, gumminess, and chewiness) were the highest in T1. T1 and T2 had higher scores for color, tenderness, and overall acceptability. T1, T2, and T3 showed significantly higher values, but there were no significant differences for flavor and juiciness. Regarding apparent viscosity properties, T1 and T2 had higher viscosity values than the other formulations. In conclusion, the T1 (duck breast 70% + duck skin 30%) and T2 (duck breast 60% + duck skin 40%) duck hams show the highest quality characteristics.

This study was conducted to investigate the strength of soil cement for varied curing temperatures (0,10,20,30,40,50,60$^{\circ}C$) and cement content (3,6,9,12%) in four cement-stabilized soils (KY: sand, MH: sand, SS: sandy loam, JJ:loam). The experimental results obtained from unconfined compressive strength tests were as follows: 1. According to increase of curing temperature as 30,40,50, and 60$^{\circ}C$, the unconfiened compressive strength of soil cement increased, the rate of increase in the early curing period was large, and around 120 hours was suifficient curing time to complete hardening. 2. The strength at 10$^{\circ}C$ decreased to the rate of 30 to 40 percent than that of 20$^{\circ}C$ while the strength at 0$^{\circ}C$ was very small, strength of soil cement increased in cold weather unless that the temperature was below 0$^{\circ}C$ 3. The average maximum temperature, about 30$^{\circ}C$ during July and August in Korea may be recommended for a optimum construction period to increase the strength of soil cement. 4. Accelerated curing time that strength was equivalent to 28-Day norma1 curing decreased in accordance with the increase of curing temperature, and also accelerated curing decreased the effect of cement content. Accelerated curing that strength was equivalent to 28-day normal curing for soil cement of cement content 9% and temperature 60$^{\circ}C$ was 45 hours; KY, 50 hours: MH, 40 hours; SS, 34 hours; JJ. 5. According to the increase of the percent passing of No. 200 sieve, accelerated curing times became shorter to become the required stength. 6. Relation between accelerated curing times and normal curing days was showeda linear of which slope decreased in accordance with the increase of curing temperature, it may be expressed as follows: (1). 30$^{\circ}C$ t=3.6d+6(r=0.97) (2). 40$^{\circ}C$ t=3.2d-5.1(r=0.95) (3). 50$^{\circ}C$ t=2.1d-4.0(r=0.93) (4). 60$^{\circ}C$ t=1.4d+4.0(r=0.90) in which t=accelerate curing time. d=normal curing day. 7. Accelerated curing time that the strength was equivalent to 35kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ which was the strength of cement brick was 96 hours at temperature 30$^{\circ}C$ to SS 9%, and 120 hours at temperature 50$^{\circ}C$ to JJ 9%, Consequently, a economic soil cement brick may be made in future.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is known to be frequently associated with obesity and type 2 diabetes. We examined the effects of EtOH extracts from Triticum aestivum on lipid accumulation during the differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes to screening the candidate materials in preventing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The lipid level in adipocytes was determined by Oil Red O staining. The treatment of 50% ethanol, but not water and 100% ethanol extracts, from Triticum aestivum at concentration of 0.5 $mg/ml$ inhibited lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 cells, revealing no cell toxicity. Thus, the fractions of $CH_2Cl_2$, EtOAc and BuOH were separated from 50% EtOH extract to characterize anti-adipogenic effect. The $CH_2Cl_2$ fraction at concentration of $50{\mu}g/ml$ effectively inhibited the lipid accumulation in the adipocytes compared to those of EtOAc and BuOH at concentration of $50{\mu}g/ml$. The intracellular triglyceride accumulation also was significantly reduced by treatment of $CH_2Cl_2$ fraction in concentration-dependent manner. Western blot analysis showed that the $CH_2Cl_2$ fraction attenuated the intracelluar level of fatty acid synthase(FAS) accompanied by attenuated expression of Peroxidase proliferator-activated receptor ${\gamma}$ ($PPAR{\gamma}$) adipogenic transcription factor. These results suggest that $CH_2Cl_2$ fraction from 50% EtOH extract of Triticum aestivum may has the potent anti-adipogenic effects by inhibiting the transactivation of $PPAR{\gamma}$.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of feeding system and NDF levels of TMR on blood metabolites in Holstein heifers. Fifty heifers were assigned to one of five treatments according to feed type and level of NDF: TMR (total mixed ration), CON (concentration + mixed forage), T1 (${\geq}53%$ NDF), T2 (50~53% NDF), and T3 (${\leq}50%$ NDF). Although GLU concentrate was not effected by feed type, increased significantly as the level of NDF decreased. There was no effect on concentrate of blood metabolite related with protein. As the level of NDF decreased, the blood ALB concentration was increased (p<0.05). The concentration of blood CHOL was higher in CON than those of TMR (p<0.05), and increased as the level of NDF decreased. The concentration of blood lipid was higher in CON than those of TMR and increased at lower level of NDF. The concentration of blood ALT were significantly lower in T3 than T1 and T2 (p<0.05). Thus, the results of this study suggest that the feeding system and NDF level may affect the blood metabolite concentration; however, the feed intake and other nutrient levels should also be considered.
Intraspecific clonal interactions have important influences on a population structure of the cellular slime mold (CSM). This study was to investigate whether or not evolutionary change in a population could be induced by clonal competition, and to elucidate how various clones in a population evolve in a homogeneous environment of laboratory culture. The characteristic clones of Polysphondylium pallidum which had different resource consumption rates (RCR) and mating types I and II were selected for study. Investigation was conducted for 4 experimental time interval $(T_0-T_4)$; one experimental time interval took almost 10-14 days from inoculation to havest of fruiting bodies. Two sets of 50 clones were cultured from 50 clones at To, and RCR variations of the population were compared between $(T_0\;and\;T_4)$ for each set of clones. Each clone of the CSM had a diverse resource consumption rate, or growth rate, in a homogeneous and limited Cerophyl agar plate despite the passage of 48-56 generations from the beginning of the experiment. Diverse clones with different growth rate could coexist in one site of the homogeneous agar plate as well as heterogeneous soil microenvironment. When there was high clonal diversity of RCR, a clone in a population had high chances to encounter other clones with resultant increased clonal competition. In one set, 26 of 37 clones of mating type I were changed to mating type Il for the 4 experimental time intervals, which indicated that the rate of competitive exclusion among clones during total experiment from $(T_0\;to\;T_4)$ was 0.703. In another set, 31 of 37 clones of mating type I were changed to mating type II , having the rate of competitive exclusion 0.838. The frequency of each of mat~ng types changed by 0.93-1.29% in each successive generation. The competitive exclusion among clones occurred by 1.26-1.75% when approximately $2.6{\times}10^8$ bacterial cells were provided as food and thereafter one generation of myxamoebae of CSM elapsed at room temperature. This finding implicated that in the vegetative state of P, pallidurn there was 1.26-1.75% probabil~ty of evolutionary change per generation changing from one clone to another clone.
A comparative study of enzymatic properties between the trypsin from the cat-shark Cephaloscyllium umbratile ( C-T) and the two trypsins from the mackerel Scomber japonicus $(M-T_A\;and\;M-T_B)$ was carried out following after the previous paper(Pyeun et al., 1991). Trypsin from cat-shark(C-T) showed the higher heat stability compared to the others $(M-T_A\;and\;M-T_B)$ and its denaturation constant$(K_D)$ was $10.68\times10^{-4}\;sec^{-1}\;at\;55^{\circ}C$ with BA-p-NA substrate. The activation energies(Ea) of the trypsins measured at a temperature range from $30^{\circ}C\;to\;50^{\circ}C$ were estimated to be 4.07 kcal/mole for C-T, 11.61 kcal/mole for $M-T_A$, and 8.43kcal/mole for $M-T_B$, respectively. The Km values were $24.9\times10^{-5}\;M\;for\;C-T,\;5.37\times10^{-5}\;M\;for\;M-T_A,\;and\;9.65\times10^{-5}\;M\;for\;M-T_B$. On the other hand, the Ki values for TLCK and DFP determined by Dixon plot were $1.50\times10^{-6}\;M\;and\;9.28\times10^{-6}\;M\;for\;C-T\;2.86\times10^{-6}\;M\;and\;2.11\times10^{-4}\;M\;for\;M-T_A\;and\;3.90\times10^{-6}\;M\;and\;1.60\times10^{-4}\;M\;for\;M-T_B$ Similar amino acid profiles were showed between three trypsins each other, with few exceptions of $M-T_B$ containing higher amount of arginine, and the smaller amount of tryptophan in C-T than the others.
