고온 내화물 응용을 위한 질화규소철 (Ferro-Si3N4)의 분해거동 (Decomposition Behavior of Ferro-Si3N4 for High Temperature Refractory Application)

  • Decomposition behavior of $ferro-Si_3N_4$was investigated with varying temperature and holding time in mud components for high temperature refractory applications. Porosities gradually increased with increasing temperature and holding time due to the carbothermal reduction of $Si_3N_4\;and\;SiO_2$. Silicon monoxide (SiO) as a intermediate resulted from evaporation of $Si_3N_4\;and\;SiO_2$ reacted with C sources to generate needle-like ${\beta}-SiC$ and Fe in $Si_3N_4$ acted as a catalyst in order to enhance growth of SiC grain with the preferred orientation. SiC generation yield increased with increasing holding time, all of the $Si_3N_4\;and\;SiO_2$ affected on SiC formation up to 2h. However, SiC generation was only dependent on residual $SiO_2$ over 2h, because the carbothermal reduction reaction of $Si_3N_4$ was no longer possible at that time.

Effect of Increased Oxygen Content due to Intensive Milling on Phase and Microstructural Development of Silicon Nitride

  • Compacts of a mixture of fine $\alpha$-Si$_3$N$_4$powders, 6% $Y_2$O$_3$and 1% $Al_2$O$_3$were attrition milled time on phase and microstructural development in silicon nitride ceramics. The sintered surface and the interior showed different behaviors in phase and microstructral developments. Increased oxygen content with increased milling time of powder mixture leads to the formation of Si$_2$$N_2$O phase at temperatures as low as 155$0^{\circ}C$. Si$_2$$N_2$O is stable in the interior of the samples but unstable in the surface region of the specimen sintered at higher temperature. This results in a duplex structure where the interior consists of Si$_2$$N_2$O grains dispersed in $\beta$-Si$_3$N$_4$matrix and a surface which contains only $\beta$-Si$_3$N$_4$. The alpha to beta phase transformation and the microstructural development are shown to be influenced by the formation and decomposition of the Si$_2$$N_2$O.

  • Adsorption behavior and amount of phenolic resin followed silica (SiO2) formation onto silicon nitride(Si3N4) surface were investigated using electrokinetic sonic amplitude (ESA) technique and with UV spectrometer, to fabricate Si3N4/SiC nano-composite based on reaction between SiO2 formed and phenolic resin absorbed onto Si3N4 particle. The amount of SiO2 formed and carbon from phenolic resin absorbed onto Si3N4 surface were calculated quantitatively to adjust the reaction between SiO2 and phenolic resin, resulting in no residual SiO2 and carbon. As a result, pre-heated tempeature for optimized reaction was below 25$0^{\circ}C$, in which there was no residual SiO2 and carbon.

AlN-SiO2-Al2O3계로부터 AlN-Polytypes의 제조 (Synthesis of AlN-SiO2-Al2O3 System)

  • In order to synthesize AlN-polytypes from AlN-SiO2-Al2O3 system, composition A (AlN/SiO2/Al2O3=1/0.3/0.05, mole ratio) and composition B(AlN-SiO2-Al2O3=1/0.2/0.05, mole ratio) were used. AlN-polytypes were produced by nitriding the mixture at 175$0^{\circ}C$~190$0^{\circ}C$ under N2 atmosphere. For lower reaction temperature, 15R phase was produced and in the case of higher reaction temperature, AlN phase was only produced. As each composition was heated at 185$0^{\circ}C$ in N2 atmosphere, produced main phases were 15R phase for composition A and 21R phase for composition B respectively. The fracture surfaces of produced reactants showed porous skeleton structure.

Effect of Si/α-Si3N4 Ratio on the Shape of Silicon Nitride Particles Produced by SHS Method

  • Si and ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ powder mixtures added with 3 wt% $Y_2O_3$ were reacted under 5 MPa nitrogen pressure. The reaction products contained ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ particles with elongated shapes. Length and width of the elongated grains were the maximum when the starting powder mixture of 50 wt% Si - 47 wt% ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ and 3 wt% $Y_2O_3$ was used. Aspect ratio of the elongated grains were between 4.4 and 5. When the starting powder mixture contained 70 wt% Si, large particles with irregular shapes appeared. Meanwhile, the reaction did not proceed when the starting powder mixture contained 30 wt% Si and less. The SHS product was easy to crush and the elongated particles obtained from the starting powder mixtures of 40 wt% Si - 57 wt% ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ - 3 wt% $Y_2O_3$ and 50 wt% Si - 47 wt% ${\alpha}-Si_3N_4$ - 3 wt% $Y_2O_3$ were good candidates for the seeds.

  • The phase relations and microstructure appeared at 1700℃ in a system of Si3N4-Al2O3-SiO2 were studied. The samples were pressurelessly sintered at 1700℃ for 1hr and reheated at 1600℃ for 1hr under nitrogen atmosphere. The compounds formed were identified by X-ray diffraction method and the microstrues were observed by SEM. The stable phases appeared in this system were X-phase, Si2ON2, β'-Si3N4 and Mullite. From the results of those experiments, it was concluded that the X-phase has very close composition to that proposed by G, K. Layden, Si3Al6O12N2. SEM photographs showed that Si2ON2 was a plate phase and X-phase was a rectagular plate phase.

  • Synthesis of high purity ultrafine Si3N4 and ${\beta}$-Sialon powders was investigated via the simultaneous reduction and nitriding of amorphous SiO2, SiO2-Al2O3 system prepaerd by hydrolysis of alkoxides, using carbonablack as a reducing agent. In Si(OC2H5)4-C2H5 OH-H2 O-NH4OH system, hydrolysis rate increased with increasing reaction temperature and pH. Pure ${\alpha}$-Si3N4 was formed at 1350$^{\circ}C$ for 5 hrs in N2 atmosphere. In Si(OC2H5)4-Al(OC3H7)3-C6H6-H2 O-NH4OH system, weight loss increased as Si/Al ratio decreased. Single phase ${\beta}$-Sialon consisted of Si/Al=2 was formed at 1350$^{\circ}C$ in N2 and minor phases of ${\alpha}$-Si3N4, AIN, and X-phase were existed besides theSialon phase at other Si/Al ratios. The Si3N4 and Sialon powders synthesized from alkoxides consisted of uniform find particles of 0.05-0.2$\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter, respectively.

  • SiC and Si mixtures dispersed by 0.5~10.0 wt% of Al2O3 and reinforced by SiC whisker were sintered to Si3N4 bonded SiC bodies at 140$0^{\circ}C$ in a N2 gas atmosphere, and the nitridation and mechanical properties of sintered bodies were investigated. From these observation, it is concluded that relative density and bending strength increased with the rising of nitridation and the highest nitridation ratio was obtained for a specimen having 1.5 wt% Al2O3. On the other hand, the amount of $\beta$-Si3N4 in the specimens containing Al2O3 more than 5.0 wt% was increased abruptly and the best in fracture toughness was sintered for a composits having 30 wt% SiC whiskers.

  • The reaction product between Si3N4 and ZrO2 has been studied by heat treatment of Si3N4-Zr(Y)O2 composite in high vacuum(<10-5 torr) and in air at $700^{\circ}C$. ZrN was formed after heat treatment in vacuum and easily oxidized after heat treatment in air. The amount of ZrN is related to the Y2O3 content dissolved in ZrO2. After the heat treatment in air the toughness increased and the spalling due to the oxidation of ZrN in specimen surface was observed. As a result, it is suggested that the formation of ZrN phase in Si3N4-ZrO2 composite enhance the toughness of the composite in an oxidation conditon.

  • (100) Si was oxidized in N2O ambient, and the film properties of oxynitride dielectrics were compared with pure SiO2. The growth rate, after pre-oxidation in O2/N2 ambient with raising temperature, is faster than that of O2/N2O treatment during the same condition. Nitrogen piles up at the interface of SiO2 and Si substrate and the content is about 2atom%. Comparing with pure SiO2, oxynitride dielectrics shows less dielectric breakdown failures and flat-band voltage shift, and good diffusion barrier property to dopant(BF2) is also observed.
