A Retrospective Study on Canine Epilepsy: Etiological Distribution, Therapeutic Outcome, and Survival Time

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the etiological distribution, therapeutic outcome, and survival time in canine epilepsy. The medical records of 57 epileptic dogs were reviewed for the evaluation of etiological distribution. Among them, 27 dogs (47%) and 30 dogs (52%) had idiopathic epilepsy (IdE) and structural epilepsy (StE), respectively. Twenty-nine dogs (IdE: 16 dogs, StE: 13 dogs) were evaluated for therapeutic outcome and survival time. The incidence of generalized epileptic seizure (IdE, 56% vs. StE, 44%; P = 0.043) and the median seizure frequency at the time of first presentation (IdE, 2.0/month vs. StE, 13.3/month; P < 0.01) were significantly different between the two groups. Although pre-treatment seizure frequency and duration were not different, the median duration of seizure in the IdE group (0.5 min) was significantly shorter than that in the StE group (3 min) after treatment (P < 0.01). In addition, the median frequency of seizure was relatively lower in the IdE group (0.25/month) compared to the StE group (2.00/month) following antiepileptic therapy (P = 0.053). The median survival time of the IdE group (1.5 years [95% CI, 1.0-2.3 years]) was significantly longer than that of the StE group (0.4 year [95% CI, 0.2-1.3 years]) (P < 0.01). The information on etiological data and intracranial lesions may be useful for predicting treatment response and prognosis in epileptic dogs.

  • The purpose of study is to propose numerical assessment methods of lateral deformation shape under lateral loads for regular high-rise buildings. The normalized 1st mode shape is used to assess lateral deformation shape. The assessment method are mass participation factor, representative value by RMS, the mean value, median of the nomalized 1st mode shape. These methods are able to know a fundamental lateral deformation shape of the building and effects of interactive systems numerically. Generally the characteristics of normalized 1st mode shape for various models coincide with numerical assessment results.

Cervical Necrotizing Fasciitis Caused by Dental Infection

  • Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is defined as rapidly progressive necrosis of subcutaneous fat and fascia. Although NF of the face is rare, its mortality rate is nearly 30%. It usually originates from dental infection and can lead to involvement of the neck, mediastinum, and chest wall. Complications resulting from pre-existing systemic diseases can increase the mortality rate. Known complication factors for NF include diabetes, malnutrition, advanced age, peripheral vascular disease, renal failure, and obesity. Here, we report a case of NF originating from dental infection in an 88-year-old woman already diagnosed with hypertension, thoracic aortic aneurysm, and renal diseases. Such conditions limited adequate surgical and antibiotic treatment. However, interdisciplinary treatment involving multiple departments was implemented with good results.

과학중심 STEAM 수업을 통한 학습자가 인식하는 21세기 학습자 역량 변화 (A Study on Changes in Learners' Recognition of 21st Century Learner Competencies through Science-centered STEAM Class)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the educational effects of STEAM class by focusing on $21^{st}$ century learner competencies based on burning and extinguishing unit. Two 6th grade classes were divided into experimental group and comparison group to treat the experimental group with elementary science class using STEAM class. General class according to teacher manual was implemented for the comparison group. Elementary science class applying STEAM class was conducted for 9 lessons throughout the experimental period. The result of this study are as follows. Elementary science class with STEAM class had significant effect on 21st century learner competencies compared to traditional instructor-led classroom. Looking specifically, it was a significant difference in the three domains of the seven domains (problem solving, collaboration, flexibility). The study results indicated that STEAM class was effective in improving learners'recognition of 21st century learner competencies.

Leiomyosarcoma of the Face

  • Leiomyosarcoma is a rare form of soft tissue neoplasm, with only 1% to 5% occurring in the head and neck region. Current recommended treatment suggests surgical excision with a wide lateral margin, but no definite guidelines regarding excisional margin have been established yet. Recently, complete excision with a narrow surgical margin has been recommended, and the authors present a case of cutaneous leiomyosarcoma on the face that was successfully managed by complete removal with a narrow excisional margin. A 74-year-old woman presented with a 3 cm sized, rapidly growing cutaneous mass on her right preauricular area. Preoperative biopsy of the skin lesion suggested a cutaneous leiomyosarcoma. The authors performed complete surgical excision with a 1 cm lateral margin, and the resulting skin defect was repaired with bilateral V-Y advancement local flaps. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry evaluation confirmed a moderately differentiated cutaneous leiomyosarcoma, with negative margin involvement. The patient refused of any additional treatment, but showed no locoregional recurrence during the 1.5 years of postoperative follow-up period. With a regular postoperative follow-up, cutaneous leiomyosarcomas may be successfully treated with a narrow surgical margin.

Bee Venom 약침과 Sweet Bee Venom 약침의 득기감 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Acupuncture sensation Characteristics of Bee Venom and Sweet Bee Venom)

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a difference in acupuncture sensation depending on the bee venom pharmacopunctures. The study was designed to identify the intrinsic acupuncture sensation of the bee venom pharmacopunctures compared to saline. Methods Bee venom,(BV), Sweet bee venom(SBV), and normal saline were injected in order to the left of ST36 (Joksamni), ST37 (Sang-geoheo), right ST36 (Joksamni), ST37 (Sanggeoheo) each. The order of insertion of the BV, SBV, and normal saline was randomly assigned using a computerized random number table. The questionnaire used in this study was based on the Massachusetts General Hospital Acupuncture Sensation Scale (MASS). Results : BV and SBV was statistically significantly higher than saline in soreness, aching, distention, sharp pain and itchiness. Above this, BV was statistically significantly higher than saline in tingling and throbbing. And SBV was statistically significantly higher than saline in warmth. BV was statistically significantly higher than SBV in ichiness. Conclusion. BV and SBV were mainly strong, heavy, and gave a sharp feeling to the subjects. The results of the study can be used as references for future bee venom pharmacopunctures use. In addition, the results of the study can be used as basic data for clinical trials using bee venom pharmacopunctures.

사암침법(舍岩鍼法) 중 육양경(六陽經)의 승격(勝格) 혈위(穴位)에 대한 염전보사(捻轉補瀉) 침자(鍼刺)가 고지방식이(高脂肪食餌)로 유발된 고지혈증(高脂血症) 백서(白鼠)에 미치는 영향(影響) (Effects of five element constitutional acupuncture(Sa-am acupuncture) using needle manipulation to sedate Six Fu-Organ on serum lipid and liver function of hyperlipidemic rats induced by high fat diet)

  • Objective : The aim of this research was to investigate the effect on five element constitutional acupuncture(Sa-am acupuncture) at 4 acupoints by needle manipulation to sedate Six Fu-Organ on hyperlipidemia induced by high fat diet in rats. Method : We recorded data of weight gain, food intake, food efficiency, weight of liver, heart, spleen, lung, kidney, levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL-cholesterol, AST, ALT in serum of rats fed high fat diet for 5 weeks. Spraque Dawley rats were divided into eight groups(normal; normal diet and non-acupuncture group, control; non-acupuncture group, Acu-LI; acupuncture at $SI_5{\cdot}LI_5{\cdot}BL_{66}{\cdot}LI_2$ group, Acu-ST; acupuncture at $GB_{41}{\cdot}ST_{43}{\cdot}LI_1{\cdot}ST_{45}$, Acu-SI; acupuncture at $BL_{66}{\cdot}SI_2{\cdot}ST_{36}{\cdot}SI_8$, Acu-BL; acupuncture therapy at $ST_{36}{\cdot}BL_{40}{\cdot}GB_{41}{\cdot}BL_{65}$, Acu-TE; acupuncture at $BL_{66}{\cdot}TE_2{\cdot}ST_{36}{\cdot}TE_{10}$, Acu-GB; acupuncture at $LI_1{\cdot}GB_{44}{\cdot}SI_5{\cdot}GB_{38}$. After needles inserted, it was rotated clockwise and anticlockwise 12 times on rats fed high fat diet. Results : The body weight was decreased in Acu-SI, Acu-TE, Acu-GB group, /the food intake was decreased in Acu-TE, / the food efficiency was decreased in Acu-SI, /serum triglyceride was decreased in Acu-LI, Acu-ST, Acu-BL, Acu-GB, /serum total cholesterol was decreased in Acu-LI, Acu-BL, serum ALP was decreased in Acu-LI, Acu-ST, Acu-BL, Acu-TE, Acu-GB. While the relative weight of heart was increased in Acu-LI, Acu-SI, the relative weight of kidney was increased in Acu-SI, Acu-GB. Conclusion : These results suggest that five element constitutional acupuncture(Sa-am acupuncture) may be having an therapeutic influence on hyperlipidemia induced by high fat diet. Further researches of acupuncture manipulation are needed in the future based on our study.

Zr-V-M(M=Fe, Ga, Y)게터합금의 수소 흡수특성 (Hydrogen Absorption Properties of Zr-V-M(M=Fe, Ga, Y) Getter Alloys)

  • The $Zr_{57}V_{36}M_7$ getter alloy was prepared by Fe substituting Ga or Y for Fe on $Zr_{57}V_{36}M_7$ getter alloy(St707), and the activation temperatures and the hydrogen a sorption speeds of these alloys were investigated. The activation temperatures of these alloys were estimated from the ultimate pressure-temperature curve and lowered about $100\~200\;K$ compared to $Zr_{57}V_{36}M_7$, fetter alloy(St707). However, final pressures at fully activated temperature were increased with substitution of Fe by Ga and Y on $Zr_{57}V_{36}M_7$ getter alloy. The hydrogen sorption speeds of these alloys measured by an orifice method were decreased about $0.460\~0.586liter/sec$ g compared to $Zr_{57}V_{36}M_7$ getter alloy.

침자극이 흰쥐 대뇌피질의 NADPH-d와 nNOS, NPY, VIP신경세포에 미치는 영향 (The effect of acupuncture on Choksamni(ST36), Kokchi (LI11) & Arbitrary acupoint on NADPH-diaphorase, neuronal Nitric Oxide Synthase, Neuropeptide Y and Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide in the cerebral cortex of Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats)

  • Objective: To investigate the effects of acupointed Choksamni(ST36), Kokchi(LI11) and Arbitrary acupoint on NADPH-diaphorase, neuronal nitric oxide synthase(nNOS), neuropeptide Y(NPY) and vasoactive intestinal peptide(VIP) in the cerebral cortex of spontaneously hypertensive rats. Methods: The experimental groups were divided into four groups: Normal, Choksamni(ST36), Kokchi(LI11), arbitrary group. Needles were inserted into acupoints at the depth of 0.5 cm with basic insertion method. Such stimulation was applied continuously for 10 minutes, every other day, for 10 sessions of treatments. Thereafter we evaluated changes in NADPH-d-positive neurons histochemically and changes in nNOS, NPY and VIP-positive neurons immunohistochemically. Results : The optical densities of NADPH-d-positive neurons of all the Choksamni & Kokchi groups were significantly different in all areas of cerebral cortex as compared to arbitrary group. In motor1, sensory2, cingulate2, insular, peripheral, visual cortex there was a significant difference between Choksamni & Kokchi group. The optical densities of nNOS-positive neurons of Choksamni group were significantly different in all areas except for auditory, visual and pisiform cortex and Kokchi group in all areas except for auditory and pisiform cortex as compared to arbitrary group. And there was a significant difference in cingulate1, cingulate2, ectohinal, visual cortex between Choksamni & Kokchi group. The optical densities of NPY neurons of Choksamni group were significantly different in cingulate2, insular, pisiform cortex and Kokchi group in motor1, motor2, sensory1, cingulate2, ectorhinal cortex as compared to arbitrary group. And there was no significant difference between Choksamni & Kokchi group. The optical densities of VIP neurons of Choksamni group were significantly different in all areas except for motor1, auditory cortex and Kokchi group in sensory1, insular, ectorhinal, perirhinal, visual, pisiform cortex as compared to arbitrary group. And there was a significant difference in cingulate1, cingulate2, retrosplenial, auditory corterx between Choksamni & Kokchi group. Conclusion : Our results demonstrated that acupuncture on Choksamni(ST36) & Kokchi(LI11) changes the control activities of the NO system in the cerebral cortex of SHR and according to areas there were significant difference between two groups. In all cerebral cortex areas there were distributed NPY & VIP and there were no significant difference among Choksamni(ST36), Kokchi(LI11) and arbitrary group.
