Due to increase of air pollution substance, such as $SO_2$,$SO_3$, H2S ,CO, HCI, $Cl_2$ and so on, the operating environment of mechanical equipment and facilities like generating plants, ships, metal structure etc., are acidified and corroded. In these environments, the crevice corrosion of marine facilities frequently occurs at crevice like jointed bolt, gasket or sealant, riveted plates, contact of metal with non-metallic solids etc. Therefore, this paper was studied on the crevice corrosion behavior of mild steel(SS 400) in marine environment. In a variety of NaCl solutions, the aspect of he .crevice corrosion and polarization behavior under the crevice corrosion was investigated. The main results obtained are as follows: 1) Under crevice corrosion, the open circuit potential become less treble as the concentration of NaCl solution increased. 2) The corrosion current density of mild steel was high drained as the concentration of NaCl solution increased by 3.5%, but in the concentration increased over 3.5%, the corrosion current density was low drained. 3) The crevice corrosion is more sensitive to the synergy effect of dissolved oxygen and NaCl.

The material exposure tests have been carried out since 1993 to evaluate the relationship between air pollution and material corrosion with the cooperation of the researchers in Japan, China, and Korea. The test pieces such as bronze, copper, marble, and carbon steel have been exposed under both unsheltered and rain-sheltered outdoor condition separately at 18 sampling sites in East Asia. At the same time, the concentration of SO$_2$ and NO$_2$ has been measured simultaneously with passive sampler. The meteorological data were collected from the AWS (Auto-mated weather station) In each country and chemical compositions of wet deposition were also analyzed by the bulk sampling of rainfall every month. As the results, it was found that the corrosion rates of test pieces in the ambient air were appeared to be in the order of carbon steel > marble > bronze copper. The corrosion rates of test pieces in the unsheltered outdoor condition were 2.34 to 5.88 times larger than those in rain-sheltered condition. It was also found that the corrosion rate in the heavy polluted area in China was the highest, and the corrosion rates of the metal pieces were generally proportional to SO$_2$ concentration. Between two sites in Korea, the test pieces at Daegu site showed higher corrosion rates that would be due to the higher SO$_2$ concentration.
The specimens for the corrosion test were made by hot-pressing of SiC power with 2 wt% Nl2O3 and 10wt% Al2O3 additions at 2000℃ and 2050℃. The specimens were corroded in 37 mole% NaCl and 63 mole% Na2SO4 salt mixture at 1000℃ up to 60 min. SiO2 layer was formed on SiC and then this oxide layer was dissolved by Na2O ion in the salt mixture. The rate of corrosion of the specimen containing 10 wt% Al2O3 was slower than that of the specimen containing 2 wt% Al2O3. This is due to the presence of continuous grain boundary phase in the specimen containing 10 wt% Al2O3. The oxidation of SiC produced gas bubbles at the SiC-SiO2 interface. The rate of corrosion follows a linear rate law up to 50 min. and then was accelerated. This acceleration is due to the disruption oxide layer by the gas evolution at SiC-SiO2 interface. Pitting corrosion has found at open pores and grain boundaries.
Steel was exposed in an atmospheric environment, and atmospheric environmental factors that include chloride, humidity, SO2, NO2 etc. induced the corrosion of steel. Corrosivity categories classified by SO2 and chloride deposition rate were low, but those classified by TOW were high in the Korean Peninsula, and on these environmental categories, the corrosivity of atmospheres classified by corrosion rate in carbon steel was low medium, C2-C3, and medium, C3 for zinc, copper, and aluminum. This work performed the outdoor exposure test for 10 years at 14 areas in Korea and calculated the atmospheric corrosion rate of carbon steel. The atmospheric corrosion behavior of carbon steel is discussed based on the various corrosion factors. When the corrosion product forms on carbon steel by atmospheric corrosion, cracks may also be formed, and through these cracks, the environmental factors can penetrate into the interior of the product, detach some of the corrosion products and finally corrode locally. Thus, the maximum corrosion rate was about 7.3 times greater than the average corrosion rate. The color difference and glossiness of carbon steel by the 10 year-outdoor exposure tests are discussed based on the corrosion rate and the environmental factors.

Base metal corrosion forms a significant issue during the chemical decontamination of the primary coolant loop in nuclear power plants as it is directly related to the economic and safety viability of decommissioning. In this technical note, potentiodynamic evaluations of several base metals (304 stainless steel, SA106 Grade B carbon steel, and alloy 600) were performed to determine their corrosion behavior during the hydrazine (N2H4)-based reductive ion decontamination (HyBRID) process. The results suggested that N2H4 protected the surface of the base metals in the HyBRID solution, which is primarily composed of H2SO4. The corrosion resistance of the carbon steel was further improved through the addition of CuSO4 to the solution. The corrosion rate of carbon steel in the H2SO4-N2H4-CuSO4 solution was lower than that exhibited in an oxalic acid solution, a commonly used reaction medium during commercial decontamination processes. These results indicate the superiority of the HyBRID process with respect to the base metal stability.
To solve the corrosion problem of industrial equipment and other constructions containing metals, corrosion protection can be performed by using coating which provides a barrier between the metal and its environment. Coatings play a significant role in protecting irons and steels in harsh marine and acid environments. This study was conducted to identify an anti-corrosive epoxy coating for carbon steel composite with 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 wt% concentrations of nanoparticles of SiO2 using the dip-coating method. The electrochemical behavior was analyzed with open circuit potential (OCP) technics and polarization curves (Tafle) in 3.5 wt% NaCl and 5 vol% H2SO4 media. The structure, composition, and morphology were characterized using different analytical techniques such as X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared spectrum (FT-IR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Results revealed that epoxynano SiO2 coating demonstrated a lower corrosion rate of 2.51 × 10-4 mm/year and the efficiency of corrosion protection was as high as 99.77%. The electrochemical measurement showed that the nano-SiO2 / epoxy coating enhanced the anti-corrosive performance in both NaCl and H2SO4 media.
Electrochemical migration phenomenon is correlated with ionization of anode electrode, and ionization of anode metal has similar mechanism with corrosion phenomenon. In this work, in-situ water drop test and evaluation of corrosion characteristics for SnPb solder alloys in $Na_2SO_4$ solutions were carried out to understand the fundamental electrochemical migration characteristics and to correlate each other. It was revealed that electrochemical migration behavior of SnPb solder alloys was closely related to the corrosion characteristics, and Sn Ivas primarily ionized in ${SO_4}{^2-}$ solutions. The quality of passive film formed at film surface seems to be critical not only for corrosion resistance but also for electrochemical migration resistance of solder alloys.

To estimate the reliability of 12Cr alloy steel, the material of turbine blade in the steam power plant, Its corrosion susceptibility and fatigue characteristics in NaCl and Na$_2$SO$_4$solution with the difference of concentration and temperature was investigated. The polarization tests recommended in ASTM G5 standard for corrosion susceptibility in the various corrosive solutions was estimated. It showed that the higher temperature, the faster corrosion rates and corrosion rates were the fastest in 3.5 wt.% NaCl and 1M Na$_2$SO$_4$solution. From these results, the degradation conditions were determined in distilled water, 3.5 wt.% NaCl and 1M Na$_2$SO$_4$solution at room temperature, 60$\^{C}$ and 90$\^{C}$ during 3, 6 and 9 months. Its surface had a few pits for long duration. But, it was not susceptible in sulfide and chloride condition of several temperatures. If the degraded 12Cr alloy steel and non-degraded one were compared with fatigue characteristics, Any differences were not found regardless of temperature and degradation period.

The corrosion of copper in $H_2$$SO_4$$-H_2$$O_2$ etching solutions with amines was investigated at various flow rates (v). Amine additives give a retardation of $H_2$$O_2$ decompositions, increases in both corrosion rates and etch factor, and a protection of etched copper surfaces. However n-alkylamine additives acted as corrosion inhibitors at v < 10cm/s, those acted as corrosion accelerators at v of 10-220cm/s. The maximum corrosion rate was obtained with about 0.1 molal concentration of additives. Steric effects of substituted groups suppressed the acceleration of copper corrosion. The increases in both corrosion rates and flow rates gave the increase in etch factor. Corrosion rates with n-alkylamine increased in the order of ethylamine < n-propylamine < n-butylamine, those with butylamine isomers tert- < sec- < iso- < n-butylamine, and those with amine additives of different number of substituted groups tri- < di- < mono-n-propylamine, respectively.
The fretting wear corrosion characteristics between the SM20C and the SM20C, the YBsC3 and the STC4H was experimented by using radical type friction experimental device under the corrosion environment of atmosphere, neutral solution, acid solution and chemical factors of the sea water. The affection of underground water that affect fretting wear corrosion of the SM20C which is moving specimen was more sensitive at the STC4H and more insensible at the YBsC3. The affection of underground water that affect fretting wear corrosion of the STC4H was less, but in the $0.5\%\;H_2SO_4$ and $0.5\%\;HNO_3$ solutions the fretting wear corrosion of the STC4H was more large. The fretting wear corrosion of the SM20C which is moving specimen in the underground water was less than in the $3.5\%\;NaCl$, $0.5\%\;H_2SO_4$ and $0.5\%\;HNO_3$ solutions. As time passed, the fretting wear corrosion is increased in the $HNO_3$ solution and dull in the $0.5\%\;H_2SO_4$ solution.
