  • In order to investigate the effect of thickness on the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of (001) PMN-29PT single crystals, three different types of PMN-29PT samples were prepared using the solid-state single crystal growth (SSCG) method: high density crystal [99%], low density crystal [95%], and high density crystal doped with Mn [98.5%]. When their thickness decreased from 0.5 mm to 0.05 mm, their dielectric constant ($K_3{^T}$), piezoelectric constants ($d_{33}$ and $g_{33}$), and electromechanical coupling factor ($k_t$) decreased continuously. However, their dielectric loss (tan ${\delta}$) increased. The addition of Mn to PMN-PT induced an internal bias electric field ($E_I$), increased the coercive electric field ($E_C$), and prevented local depoling. Therefore, Mn-doped PMN-PT crystals show high stability as well as high performance, even in the form of very thin plates (< 0.2 mm), and thus are suitable for application to high frequency composites, medical ultrasound probes, non-destructive testing devices (NDT), and flexible devices.

  • The purpose of this study is measured surface acoustic wave(SAW) characteristics to confirm utilization possibility as SAW sensor using new Pb(Mg$_{1}$3/Nb$_{2}$3/) $O_3$-PbTiO$_3$ (PMN-PT) piezoelectric substrate. We have tried to see if the material can be practically available as a new surface acoustic wave (SAW) biosensor to detect protein. The experimental results clarified that the frequency filtering of the central frequency of the PMN-PT substrate is a superior result to that of the LiTaO$_3$ (LT) substrate, but the result was not completely satisfactory. We know there is a problem in the design of inter-digital transducer (IDT) pattern. The waves transferred through the input terminal forms SAW which is sure to be transferred to the direction of the output terminal and the backward direction of the input terminal. This reflected wave is reiterated with SAW, which is transferred to the output direction, and so the frequency filtering gives a not good result. The electromechanical coupling coefficient of the PMN-PT substrate is excellent, and we can use it as a SAW sensor, in the near future, provided that there will be a new IDT design to increase the frequency filtering.

  • The domain structures of annealed (001)-oriented $Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-x%PbTiO_3$ (PMN-x%PT) crystals for x = 10, 20, 30, 35, and 40 at% were investigated by Polarized Optical Microscopy (POM) and Scanning Force Microscopy (SFM) in the piezoresponse mode. Both Polar Nano-Domains (PND) and long strip-like domains were clearly observed. The results also showed how the domain structure changed between phases with an increasing x in the PMN-x%PT crystals and the domain hierarchy on various length scales ranging from 40 nm to 0.1 mm. Distorted pseudo-cubic phase (x < 20%) consisted of PNDs that did not self-assemble into macro-domain plates. The rhombohedral phase (x = 30%) consisted of PNDs that began to self-assemble into colonies along preferred {110} planes. The monoclinic phase (x = 35%) consisted of miniature polar domains on the nm scale, whereas, the tetragonal phase (x = 40%) consisted of {001} oriented lamella domains on the mm scale that had internal nano-scale heterogeneities, which self-assembled into macro-domain plates oriented along {001} the mm scale.

  • In this study, the piezoelectric energy harvester was investigated employing the pillar structure with the diameter size of 50~500 um. Usually, the aspect ratio between the height and diameter was related with the piezoelectric performance. High aspect ratio was showed the low electric noise and high piezoelectric properties than low aspect ratio. Therefore, we have selected the Su-8 photo-resist and modified lithography process to manufacture the pillar structure with height above the 250 ${\mu}m$. In this presentation, we will report the process and properties of micro pillar structure based on the PMN-PZT (Pb$(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3$-PbZrTiO$_3$) materials.

  • In this paper, we present the results of a preliminary study on the piezoelectric energy harvesting performance of a Zr-doped $PbMg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3}O_3-PbTiO_3$ (PMN-PZT) single crystal beam. A novel piezoelectric beam cantilever structure is used to demonstrate the feasibility of generating AC voltage during a state of vibration. The energy-harvesting capability of a PMN-PZT beam is calculated and tested. The frequency response of the cantilever device shows that the first mode resonance frequency of the excitation model exists in the neighborhood of several hundreds of hertz, which is similar to the calculated value. These tests show that several significantly open AC voltages and sub-mW power are achieved. To test the possibility of a small scale power source for a ubiquitous sensor network service, energy conversion and the testing of storage experiment are also carried out.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine geochemical characteristics for stream sediments in the Gwangju area. We collect the stream sediments samples by wet sieving along the primary channels and dry these samples slowly in the laboratory and grind to under 200mesh using an alumina mortar fur chemical analysis. Major elements, trace and rare earth elements are determined by XRF, ICP-AES and NAA analysis methods. For geochemical characteristics on geological groups of stream sediments, we separate geologic groups which are derived from Precambrian granite gneiss area, Jurassic granite area and Cretaceous Hwasun andesite area. Contents range of major elements for stream sediments in the Gwangju area are $SiO_2\;51.89\~70.63\;wt.\%,\;Al_2O-3\;12.91\~21.95\;wt.\%,\;Fe_2O_3\;3.22\~9.89\;wt.\%,\;K_2O\;1.85\~4.49\;wt.\%,\;MgO\;0.68\~2.90\;wt.\%,\;Na_2O\;0.48\~2.34\;wt.\%,\;CaO\;0.42\~6.72\;wt.\%,\;TiO_2\;0.53\~l.32\;wt.\%,\;P_2O_5\;0.06\~0.51\;wt.\%\;and\;MnO\;0.05\~0.69\;wt.\%.$ According to the AMF diagram for stream sediments and rocks, the stream sediments are plotted on boundary of tholeiitic series and calk alkaline series, which shows that contents of $Fe_2O_3$ are higher in stream sediments than rocks. According to variation diagram of $SiO_2$ versus $(K_2O+Na_2O),$ stream sediments are plotted on subalkaline series. • The effect of the electrode type on the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of $Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-PbZrO_3-PbTiO_3$ (PMN-PZT) single crystals was investigated in an effort to improve their properties for various piezoelectric applications. First, three different types of PMN-PZT single crystals [PMN-PZT-A (piezoelectrically soft type; dielectric constant ~ 10,000), PMN-PZT-B (piezoelectrically soft type; phase-transition temperature between the rhombohedral and tetragonal phases ($T_{RT}$) ~ $145^{\circ}C$), PMN-PZT-C (piezoelectrically hard type; high mechanical quality factor ($Q_m$) ~ 1,000)] were fabricated using the solid-state single crystal growth (SSCG) method. Then, four different types of electrodes [sputtered Au, sputtered Cr/Au, sputtered Ti/Au, and fired Ag] were formed on the single crystals, and their dielectric and piezoelectric properties were measured. The single crystals with a sputtered Ti/Au electrode showed the highest dielectric and piezoelectric constants but the lowest coercive electric field ($E_C$). The single crystals with a fired Ag electrode showed the lowest dielectric and piezoelectric constants but the highest coercive electric field ($E_C$). This dependence on the type of electrode was most significant in the piezoelectrically hard PMN-PZT-C single crystals. However, the effects of the electrode type on the phase transition temperatures ($T_C$, $T_{RT}$) and dielectric loss were negligible. These results clearly demonstrate that it is important to select an appropriate electrode so as to maximize the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of single crystals in each type of piezoelectric application.

  • In this study, in order to develop the composition ceramics for ultrasonic sensor with high $d_{33}*g_{33}$, $Pb_{1-3x/2}Bix(Mg_{1/2}W_{1/2})_{0.03}(Ni_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_{0.09}(Zr_{0.5}Ti_{0.5})_{0.88}O_3$(PMW-PNN-PZT) system ceramics were prepared using CuO as sintering aids. And then, their microstructure, piezoelectric and dielectric characteristics were systemetically investigated with bismuth substitution. The PMW-PNN-PZT ceramic specimens could be sintered at sintering temperature of $940^{\circ}C$ by adding sintering aids. At x=0.015 specimen, the density, electromechanical coupling factor($k_p$), dielectric constant, piezoelectric constant($d_{33}$) and piezoelectric figure of merit($d_{33}*g_{33}$) indicated the optimal properties of $7.90g/cm^3$, 0.67, 2,511, 628 pC/N, and $17.7pm^2/N$, respectively, for duplex ultrasonic sensor application.

So that we can understand the natural background and predict the prospects of geochemical disaster, if any. We collected the stream sediments samples by wet sieving along the primary channels and slow dried the collected samples in the laboratory and ground them to pass a 200 mesh using an alumina mortar and pestle for chemical analysis. • Ultrafine lead magnesium niobate $Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3}) O_3$ (PMN) powders have been successfully prepared via a micro-emulsion processing technique. By stepwise hydrolysis using aqueous as the precipitant, hydroxide precursor was obtained from nitrate solutions dispersed in the nanosized aqueous domains of a microemulsion consisting of cyclohexane, non-ionic surfactant (NP5+NP9) and an aueous phase. Upon calcination of the microemulsion-derived precursor at $800^{\circ}C$, PMN powders with 100% perovskite phase was obtained.
