  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study examined socio-economic differences in diverse food consumption among children 6-23 months of age in South Asia and Southeast Asian countries. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Data from Demographic and Health Surveys in four countries in South Asia (n = 15,749) and four countries in Southeast Asia (n = 10,789) were used. Survey-design adjusted proportions were estimated for the following 10 food items: grains, legumes, dark green leafy vegetables (DGLV), vitamin A-rich fruits, vitamin A-rich vegetables, other fruits and vegetables (OFV), fish, meat, dairy, and eggs. An equity gap was defined as an arithmetic difference in the proportion of each food item consumed in the past 24-hours between the wealthiest and lowest quintiles and between rural and urban areas, denoted by percentage points (pp). RESULTS: The consumption of most of the 10 food items was higher in the wealthiest quintiles and urban areas across eight countries. The size of equity gaps was greater in Southeast Asia than in South Asia, particularly for vitamin A-rich fruits (3.3-30.0 pp vs. 0.3-19.6 pp), vitamin A-rich vegetables (12.1-26.7 pp vs. 2.4-5.9 pp), meat (17.7-33.4 pp vs. 3.4-13.4 pp), and dairy (14.7-32.5 pp vs. 3.3-11.4 pp). However, the size of equity gap in egg consumption was greater in Southeast Asia than South Asia (11.2-19.8 pp vs. 11.0-26.7 pp). Relatively narrower gaps were seen in the consumption of grains (0.3-12.9 pp), DGLV (0.6-12.4 pp), and fish (0.1-16.8 pp) across all countries. CONCLUSIONS: Equity gaps in food consumption differed by socio-economic status and region. Reducing equity gaps in nutrient-rich foods and utilizing regionally available food resources may increase child dietary quality.

  • The crystallization behavior of homo polypropylene (PP) and PP in the PP-poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (PCL) blends during isothermal crystallization has been investigated using differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and advanced rheometric expansion system (ARES). From the storage modulus data of the homo PP and PP-PCL blends during isothermal crystallization, the volume fraction of crystallized material ($X_t$) of the homo PP and PP in the PP-PCL blends was calculated using the various rheological models. The results of $X_t$ of the homo PP and PP in the PP-PCL blends from ARES measurement were compared with the results from DSC. The $X_t$ of the homo PP was found to be higher in the ARES measurement than in the DSC. The crystallization rate of the homo PP was found to be faster in the rheological measurements than in the thermal analysis. The $X_t$ of PP in the PP-PCL blends with various compositions was obtained from the thermal analysis and rheological measurements. The $X_t$ of PP in the PP-PCL blends obtained from the thermal analysis and rheological measurements are not consistent. This discrepancy of $X_t$ may be due to the morphological changes resulted from the different crystallization kinetics of PP in the PP-PCL blends.

  • The effect of ozone surface treatment of montmorillonite (MMT) was investigated in thermal stabilities of polypropylene (PP) nanocomposites. Sodium montmorillonite (Na$\^$+/-MMT) was organically modified with dodecylammonium chloride. The surface properties of MMT, including the specific surface area (S$\_$BET/), equilibrium spreading pressure ($\pi$$\_$e/), and London dispersive component (${\gamma}$s$\^$L/), were studied by the BET method with $N_2$ adsorption. Also, the thermal stabilities of the nanocomposites were investigated in DSC and TGA. As experimental results, $\pi$$\_$e/ and ${\gamma}$s$\^$L/ of the ozonized dodecylammonium chloride (DA-MK ( $O_3$)) were increased in about 1.7 and 3.5 mJ/ $m^2$, resulting from the increasing of the micropores. From the DSC results, it was found that the melting temperature and crystallization temperature of PP/DA-MK and PP/DA-MK ( $O_3$) were higher that those of pure PP. These results were explained that dodecylammonium chloride of nano-scale led to a nucleation effect for PP crystallization. Also, it was found that E$\_$t/ of the PP/DA-MK ( $O_3$) nanocomposies was increased within about 64 kJ/mol. These results were probably explained by the improvement of dispersivity of DA-MK ( $O_3$) in a PP matrix.

  • As a material for preventing spalling of concrete, the effectiveness of PP fiber has already been confirmed. However, it is necessary to consider the maximum temperature that occurs during a fire, and to solve the mixing problem and the strength reduction problem that occur depending on the mixing amount. In this study, the fire resistance performance of tunnel segment linings according to the PP fiber content and air volume under the RABT fire scenario was investigated. As a result, no spalling or cross-sectional loss occurred in all test specimens, and when the PP fiber content was small, the maximum temperature was relatively high and the maximum temperature arrival time was also fast. On the other hand, no trend was found for the maximum temperature and arrival time according to the difference in air volume. In the internal temperature distribution results for the PP fiber mixing amount of 0.75, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 kg/m3, the results of 0.75 and 1.0 kg/m3 showed similar temperature distribution, and the results of 1.5 and 2.0 kg/m3 were similar. It was confirmed that the internal temperature distribution tends to decrease at the same depth when the amount of PP fiber mixed is large, and it was confirmed that a remarkable difference occurred from the results of 1.0 kg/m3 and 1.5 kg/m3 of PP fiber mixed amounts.

  • Our objective is to increase the flowability of Polypropylene(PP) compounds and achieve flow mark free surface in injection molded specimen. We have investigated flowabilities of PP compounds which were composed of PP, rubber, talc, and trace amount of additives. Flowability measurement was performed with four types PPs of which molecular weight distributions(MWD) and melt indexes(MI) were different. Rheological properties of the PP compounding materials, such as spiral flow(SF) length, MI, and shear viscosity, were evaluated. When PP with the broad MWD was used, there were remarkable cases where the spiral flow length of low MI PP compound was longer than that of higher MI PP compound. The PP compound having low MI but broad MWD PP has more flowability than the compound with only high MI.

  • The $d^8$-transition metal complexes containing diphosphine, $MCl_2PP$ were prepared by using $K_nMCl_m$ as starting materials, wherein M were Ni(II), Pd(II), Pt(II) and Au(III) and PP were bis(diphenylphosphino)methane(dppm), bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane(dppe), bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (dppp) and bis(diphenylphosphino)ethylene(dppety). The complexes were characterized by the spectral property $(^H-NMR$, $^{31}P-NMR$ and UV-Visible spectra) together with elemental analysis. The complexes were tested for the catalytic activity on the formation reactions of 3(2H)-furanone and cyclic carbonate. The only Ni(II)- and Pd(II)-diphosphine complexes displayed a good catalytic effects in the production of 3(2H)-furanone from 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol [reaction (1)]. But all the diphosphine complexes as catalyst were almost inactive towards cyclic carbonate production preaction [reaction (2)].

  • One row of pollen parent to two rows of seed parent (1:2), 2:4 and solid (1:2) planting patterns (PP) were compared in seed parent densities of 3,500, 5,000 and 6,500 plants per 10 ares to determine effects of PP and plant density on growths of seed and pollen plants, and seed yield of seed parent of modified single cross corn hybrid. Planting pattern did not significantly affect agronomic characteristics of seed plant except ear number per 100 plants and seed yield which were greater in solid and 1:2 PP than in 2:4 PP. Significant PP x plant density interaction did not exist for agronomic characteristics of seed parent. In the seed parent, plant height and 100 kernel weight were not affected by plant density, but ear height, ear number per 100 plants, and kernel number per ear were linearly decreased with increased plant densities. Seed yield ranged from 330 to 460 kg per 10 ares and overall yield response to plant density was quadratic. Tassel length and spikelet number per tassel of the pollen parent were significantly affected by PP and plant density. Significant PP x plant density interaction existed for tassel length and spikelet number per tassel. Tassel length and spikelet number per tassel were greater in 1:2 and 2:4 PP compared to solid PP and were greatly reduced with increased plant densities in solid and 1:2 PP. The results indicated that 1:2 or 2:4 PP at around 5,000 plants per 10 ares for seed parent would be suitable for seed production of modified single cross com hybrid.

  • Polypropylene (PP)-layered silicate nanocomposites were developed using a new processing method involving a supercritical carbon dioxide ($scCO_2$)-assisted co-rotating twin-screw extrusion process. The nanocomposites were prepared through two step extrusion processes. In the first step, the PP/clay mixture was extruded with $CO_2$ injected into the barrel of the extruder and the resulting foamed extrudate was cooled and pelletized. In the second step, the foamed extrudate was extruded with venting to produce the final PP/clay nanocomposites without $CO_2$. In this study, organophilic-clay and polypropylene matrix were used. Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MA) was used as a compatibilizer. This study focused on the effect of $scCO_2$ on the dispersion characteristics of the clays into a PP matrix and the rheological properties of the layered silicate based PP nanocomposites. The dispersion properties of clays in the nanocomposites as well as the rheological properties of the nanocomposites were examined as a function of the PP-g-MA concentration. The degree of dispersion of the clays in the nanocomposites was analyzed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscope. Various rheological properties of the nanocomposites were measured using a rotational rheometer. In the experimental results, the $scCO_2$ assisted continuous manufacturing extrusion system was used to successfully produce the organophilic-clay filled PP nanocomposites. It was found that $scCO_2$ had a measurable effect on the clay dispersion in the polymer matrix and the melt intercalation of a polymer into clay layers.

  • Compounding, using such thermoplastic elastomer as styrene-ethylene-butadiene-styrene (SEBS) blended with polypropylene(PP), oil, and other ingredients, was studied to develop a new material with excellent impact resistance and resilience for the replacement of environmentally toxic PVC sheet. Hardness decreased linearly with oil content in the SEBS/oil blend, and the tensile strength increased with PP content whereas elongation showed no effects over 50 phr of PP in SEBS/oil/PP blend. In the practical SEBS composition, proposed to replace the PVC sheet material, tensile and tear strength, as well as hardness, increased proportionally with PP content, while melt index decreased.

  • To reduce the damage of concrete in fire, a new type of lightweight cinder aggregate concrete was developed due to the excellent fire resistance of cinder. To further enhance its fire resistance, Polypropylene (PP) Fibers which can enhance the fire resistance of concrete were also used in this type of concrete. However, the bond behavior of this new type of concrete after fire exposure is still unknown. To investigate its bond behavior, 185 specimens were heated up to 22, 200, 400, 600 or 800℃ for 2 h duration respectively, which is followed by subsequent compressive and tensile tests at room temperature. The concrete-rebar bond strength of C30 PP fiber-reinforced cinder concrete was subsequently investigated through pull-out tests after fire exposure. The microstructures of the PP fiber-reinforced cinder concrete and the status of the PP fibre at different temperature were inspected using an advanced scanning electron microscopy, aiming to understand the mechanism of the bonding deterioration under high temperature. The effects of rebar diameter and bond length on the bond strength of PP fiber-reinforced cinder concrete were investigated based on the test results. The bond-slip relation of PP fiber-reinforced cinder concrete after exposure at different temperature was derived based on the test results.
