  • PP-grafted GO was prepared by the reaction of graphene oxide (GO) containing 2-bromoisobuyryl groups and polypropylene (PP) having hydroxyl groups (PP-OH) via a "grafting-to" method. GO-Br was synthesized by the reaction of GO and 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide under a basic condition. PP-MAH was reacted with ethanolamine to produce PP-OH. The melting temperature of PP-grafted GO was shifted to the higher temperature than that of PP-OH. Also, the thermal stability of PP-grafted GO was increased as compared to PP-OH and GO. These results demonstrated that the grafted coating polymer PP was effective for enhancing the thermal stability of GO. The higher surface roughness of PP-grafted GO was resulted from the chemical attachment of PP on the surface of GO. The characterization of PP-grafted GO was conducted from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscope (SEM).

  • IgE-dependent histamine-releasing factor(HRF) was initially described as a secretagogue for secretion of histamine from IgE+ basophils from a subset of allergic donors. Previously, we identified that S98 residue of HRF was phosphorylated using anti-HRFpS98 antibody which specifically recognizes the phosphorylated serine residue of HRF and HRFS98A mutant construct. In vitro kinase assay, only wild type HRF was phosphorylated by PKC, and S98A HRF was not affected by PKC. In this study, we attempted to characterize the phosphatase which specifically dephosphorylates HRF by immunoprecipitation and pull-down assay. In RBL-2H3 cells, HRF interacted only with calcineurin (also called as PP2B, calcium/calmodulin-dependent phosphatase) but not with PP1 or PP2A. The results suggest that HRF is most likely dephosphory-lated by calcineurin.

  • Protein phosphatase 4 (PP4) is a crucial protein complex that plays an important role in DNA damage response (DDR), including DNA repair, cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Despite the significance of PP4, the mechanism by which PP4 is regulated remains to be elucidated. Here, we identified a novel PP4 inhibitor, protein phosphatase 4 inhibitory protein (PP4IP) and elucidated its cellular functions. PP4IP-knockout cells were generated using the CRISPR/Cas9 system, and the phosphorylation status of PP4 substrates (H2AX, KAP1, and RPA2) was analyzed. Then we investigated that how PP4IP affects the cellular functions of PP4 by immunoprecipitation, immunofluorescence, and DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair assays. PP4IP interacts with PP4 complex, which is affected by DNA damage and cell cycle progression and decreases the dephosphorylational activity of PP4. Both overexpression and depletion of PP4IP impairs DSB repairs and sensitizes cells to genotoxic stress, suggesting timely inhibition of PP4 to be indispensable for cells in responding to DNA damage. Our results identify a novel inhibitor of PP4 that inhibits PP4-mediated cellular functions and establish the physiological importance of this regulation. In addition, PP4IP might be developed as potential therapeutic reagents for targeting tumors particularly with high level of PP4C expression.

  • The effects of maleic-anhydride-grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) and montmorillonite (MMT) on the wear resistance of polypropylene (PP) were investigated. The surface of MMT was modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, and the interfacial interaction between PP and MMT was improved using PP-g-MAH. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy was used to confirm that silane was grafted on the surface of MMT. The Taber abrasion test and scanning electron microscopy were used to determine the wear resistance and observe the surface morphology of PP, respectively, after wear testing. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy was used to compare the effects of PP-g-MAH and silane modification of MMT on the dispersion of MMT. The results indicated that silane was successfully grafted onto the surface of MMT. Moreover, the wear resistance of PP was improved by the addition of MMT. The wear resistance of PP composites comprising silane-modified MMT and PP-g-MAH was higher than those of other PP composites. This was attributed to silane improving the interfacial interaction between MMT and PP.

  • In this study, we used polypropylene grafted with itaconic acid (PP-g-IA) as a compatibilizer to prevent phase separation phenomenon which occurs upon blending polypropylene (PP) and ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH). A compatibilizer was prepared using graft copolymerization of itaconic acid (IA) onto PP where input ratio of IA was 1, 2, 5, and 10 wt.%. To confirm the structure of PP-g-IA and the graft ratio of IA onto PP, we used $^1H$ NMR and FT-IR. We tested the compatibilizer which has highest graft ratio of 1% in immiscible PP/EVOH blends. The morphologies of PP/PP-g-IA/EVOH blends were analyzed by SEM. Thermal and mechanical properties of the blends were analyzed by DSC and UTM. PP-g-IA enhanced the interfacial adhesion of PP and EVOH copolymer.

  • Polypropylene (PP)/corn starch master batch(starch-MB) blends with different PP compositions of 90, 80, 70, and 60 wt% were prepared by melt compounding at $200^{\circ}C$, using lab scale Brabender mixer. The chemical structures, thermal properties and non-isothermal crystallization behavior of the PP/starch-MB blends were investigated by FT-infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The fabrication of the PP/starch-MB blend was confirmed by the existence of hydroxy group in FT-IR spectrum. There was no district change in melting temperature and melting enthalpy, and TGA curve indicates a decrease in degradation temperature with starch-MB content. The non-isothermal crystallization process was analyzed using by Avrami equation. The Avrami exponents were in the range of 2.71-3.97 for PP and 1.48-1.99 for PP/starch-MB blonds. The activation energies calculated by Kissinger method were 233 kJ/mol for PP, 484 kJ/mol for PP90, 541 kJ/mol for PP80, 553 kJ/mol for PP70, and 422 kJ/mol for PP60.

  • Synthetic nitrite imparts a reddish-pink color to meat and a distinct flavor to meat products, delays lipid oxidation, and inhibits microbial growth and pathogens. However, excessive intake of nitrite might result in the production of carcinogenic nitrosamine, which might increase the risk of cancer in humans. Therefore, we aimed to find an alternative natural colorant for pork sausages. Pork sausages were mixed with 0.014% sodium nitrite (NaNO2) alone (CON), without either NaNO2 or purple-fleshed sweet potato powder (PP; CON1), 0.5% PP alone (PP1), 1% PP (PP2) alone, 0.011% NaNO2 and 0.5% PP (SP1), and 0.011% NaNO2 and 1% PP (SP2). The sausages were then cooked and stored for physicochemical analysis on days 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20. The a* and W* values were the greatest and lowest in the SP2 and CON1 treatments, respectively (p < 0.05). The concentrations of residual nitrite in the sausages at 20 days decreased in the order of CON > SP1, SP2 > PP2 > PP1, CON1. The fatty acid content was higher, and flavorous amino acids were more in PP2 (p < 0.05). The fatty acid composition was comparable between the SP2 and CON groups, but the contents of glutamic acid and alanine were greater in the SP2 group. In conclusion, SP2 (0.011% NaNO2 with 1% PP) could be added as a natural colorant for pork sausage production, and NaNO2 could be substituted with up to 20% PP without detrimental effects on sausage appearance and/or quality.

  • Lubricating softner(SOS-2) for permanent press(PP) finish was prepared by blending water, beef tallow hardened oil for improving softness, and the emulsion which was synthesized from N-hexadecanoyl-N,N'-bis(2-hexadecamidoethyl)amine as a softening component and silicone oil KF-96 as a lubricating component. The prepared SOS-2 and the PP finishing resin were applied to PP finishing cotton broad cloth and P/C gingham samples using one bath method. The properties such as tear strength, crease recovery, bending resistance test were tested. The samples treated with SOS-2 and PP finishing resin have improved properties, compared with nontreated samples, those treated only with PP finishing resin, those treated with commercial PP finishing softners and PP finishing resin.

  • Single crystals of metallocene-catalyzed isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and/or syndiotactic PP (sPP) were prepared and preliminarily characterized. The crystallization was performed utilizing 0.1 % by weight concentrations of each PP in o-xylene in the range of temperature of $40{\sim}90^{\circ}C$. Following the XRD patterns, samples were ${\alpha}$-iPP and antichiral Cell III of sPP. The XRD pattern of iPP shows three ${\alpha}$-form peaks due to the (110), (040), (130) planes at $2{\theta}=14.2^{\circ}$, $17^{\circ}$, $18.8^{\circ}$, respectively. The XRD pattern of sPP is characterized by the presence of the (020) reflection at $16^{\circ}$. The melting point ($123^{\circ}C$ and $148^{\circ}C$, respectively) of the metallocene catalyzed iPP and sPP were generally lower than that of conventional PP ($160{\sim}170^{\circ}C$) due to the misinsertion of the monomer. When metallocene-catalyzed iPP samples were crystallized isothermally from solution grown at a lower temperature, lozenge shape single crystals were observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

  • This study addressed status of PP(Program Provider) market, particularly focusing on independent PP. This research selected 14 independent channels and did in depth interviews for them. This study analyzed 14 channels in terms of management, production, and contents. The result showed that independent channels were in inferior condition than MPP(multiple PP) on all the aspects of management, production and content. The management structure of the PP were very vulnerable, production environment was not good. The PP were placed in a difficult environment in terms of production and purchases of content, therefore focused on distribution rather than production. This unbalance on the PP market resulted in negative effect on Korea's contents industry as well as PP industry. Therefore, this study suggested policy and regulatory reforms are needed to improve inferior status of independent PP.
