Soils of Korea experienced with long-term acidic deposition have been exhaustively leached exchangeable base cation (BC) for plant nutrient comparable with soils of forest decline areas in Europe and N. America. Ratios of $BC/Al^{3+}$ of most soils are below than 1, which value is critical load for plant growth. Acid soil applied with dolomitic liming is increased as much as 20% and 244% in concentrations of $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$, respectively, as well as shrub leaves increase much cation uptake by 1 year later. Ions of $NO_3^-$ and $NH_4^+$ in acid rain are absorbed by the canopy acted as the sink but f is leached out from the canopy to throughfall as the source at Gwangneung forest with a little of acidic deposition, however, such sink and source functions are not found at Kwanaksan forest because of so much deposition. In coniferous and deciduous forested watershed ecosystems ions of $K^+$, $Cl^-$, $NO_3^-$ and $SO_4^{2-}$ from throughfall are retained in forest floor but ions of $Na^+, $Mg^{2+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$ are leached from the floor to streamwater.

The positions of $PbI _2$ molecule synthesized into the molecular-dimensioned cavities of $\mid K_6 (Pb _4I_2)(PbI_2) _{0.67}-(H_2O)_2\mid [Si _{12}Al _{12}O _{48}]$-LTA have been determined. A single crystal of $\mid Pb _6\mid [Si _{12}Al _{12}O _{48}]$-LTA, prepared by the dynamic ion-exchange of $\mid Na _{12}\mid [Si _{12}Al _{12}O _{48}]$-LTA with aqueous 0.05 M $Pb _(NO _3)_2$ and washed with deionized water, was placed in a stream of flowing aqueous 0.05 M KI at 294 K for three days. The resulting crystal structure of the product $( \mid K_6 (Pb _4I_2)(PbI_2) _{0.67}(H_2O)_2\mid [Si _{12}Al _{12}O _{48}]$-LTA, a = 12.353(1) $\AA$) was determined at 294 K by single-crystal X-ray diffraction in the space group Pm3 m. It was refined with all measured reflections to the final error index $R_1$ = 0.062 for 623 reflections which $F_o$ > 4$\sigma$($F_o$). 4.67 $Pb ^{2+}$ and six $K^+$ ions per unit cell are found at three crystallographically distinct positions: 3.67 $Pb ^{2+}$ and three $K^+$ ions on the 3-fold axes opposite six-rings in the large cavity, three $K^+$ ions off the plane of the eight-rings, and the remaining one $Pb ^{2+}$ ion lies opposite four-ring in the large cavity. 0.67 $Pb ^{2+}$ ions and 1.34 $I^-$ ions per unit cell are found in the sodalite units, indicating the formation of a $PbI _2$ molecule in 67% of the sodalite units. Each $PbI _2$ (Pb-I = 3.392(7) $\AA$) is held in place by the coordination of its one $Pb ^{2+}$ ion to the zeolite framework (a $Pb ^{2+}$ cation is 0.74 $\AA$ from a six-ring oxygens) and by the coordination of its two $I^-$ ions to $K^+$ ions through six-rings (I-K = 3.63(4) $\AA$). Two additional $I^-$ ions per unit cell are found opposite a four-ring in the large cavity and form $Pb _2K_2I^{5+}$ and $Pb _2K_2I^{3+}$ moieties, respectively, and two water molecules per unit cell are also found on the 3-fold axes in the large cavity.
Glasses in K2O-Na2O-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-F system were crystallized to prepare machinable glass-ceramics. The optimum nucleating and crystal growing temperatures were approximately $700^{\circ}C$ and 1060~112$0^{\circ}C$, respectively for the samples investigated. Crystalline phases of sellaite, norbergite, and fluorphlogopite appeared progressively as heat-treatment temperature was increased. Surface roughness of the crystallized specimens after the machining was similar to that of metal aluminum (2.18 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$). Thermal expansion coefficient, Vickers hardness and dielectric constants of the fluorphlogopite glass-ceramics prepared were 7.37~10.21 ($\times$10-6/$^{\circ}C$), 302~456kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$ and 5.97~16 respectively.
While about 80% of Jeju soils are classified as Andisols, the soils derived from volcanic ash in Dangsanbong are not Andisols. There is a significant difference of precipitation in localities of Jeju island. The study area is characterized by the lowest amount of annual rainfall in Jeju Island, and by the layered silicates as dominant solid phase in clay fraction. The purpose of this study was to characterize the mineralogy of the non-Andie soils in detail, especially hydroxy-interlayered silicates. Two major soil horizons are recognized in the soil profile developed in the Dangsanbong area, which can be designated as A and C. The soil pH($H_{2}0$), ranges from 6.6 to 7.3 increasing with depth, is higher than that of typical Andisols(pH<6.0). While the pH(NaF), ranges from 9.49 to 9.81, indicates that significant amount of amorphous phases might be present as exchanging complexes. It is estimated to about 1.542.88 wt% by using chemical selective dissolution. The organic content of surface horizon is about 2 wt%. This soil are composed of quartz, feldspar and olivine as major constituents with minor of silicate clays. Quartz is frequently observed in A and distinctly decreases in its amount with depth, while olivine is dominant phase in C and rarely observed in A. In the <0.2$\mu\textrm{m}$ size fraction, smectite and kaolinite/smectite interstratification are dominant with minor of illite. The amounts of smectite decrease with depth, while the amounts of kaolinite/smecite interstratification increase with depth, which indicates the trend of mineral transformation with increasing the degree of weathering. The proportion of kaolinite in kaolinite/smectite interstratification is about 85%, and is not changed significantly through the profile. In the 2-0.2$\mu\textrm{m}$size fraction, vermiculite, smectite, illite and kaolinite are major components with minor of chlorite. Most of chlorite are interstratified with smectite. Chlorite which is not interstratified with smectite occurs only in surface horizon. The proportion of the chlorite in the chlorite/smectite interstratification is 59-70(%) and increases with depth. Hydroxy-interlayered vermiculite(HIV) with hydroxy-Fe/AI in their interlayers occurs in both A and C horizon. The amounts of hydroxy-Fe/AI decrease with depth. Hydroxy-interlayered smectite(HIS) of which interlayers might be composed of hydroxy-Mg/Al occurs only in C horizon. As the results of mineralogical investigation for the soil profile in the study area, clay minerals might be changed and evolved through the following weathering sequences: 1) Smectite Kaolinite, HIS, Vermiculite, 2) Vermiculite HIV Chlorite.

The study aimed to investigate the profile of alkaloids in two ethyl acetate soluble fractions, namely fractions A and B from an ethanolic extract of Ficus septica leaves and cytotoxic effect on T47D breast cancer cells. Preparation of both fractions involved maceration of leaves with 70% (v/v) ethanol, filtration with $Al_2O_3$, precipitation with 0.1 N HCl, Mayer reagent, and 0.1 N NaOH, and also partition with ethyl acetate. Qualitative thin layer chromatography (TLC) was conducted to determine the profile of alkaloids in the two fractions, using alkaloid specific reagents such as Dragendorff, sodium nitrite, and Van Urk-Salkowski. Cytotoxic effects of both fractions on T47D cells were evaluated using MTT assay with a concentration series of 1.56; 3.12; 6.25; 12.5; 25 and $50{\mu}g/mL$. The TLC test showed that fractions A and B contained alkaloids with Rx values of 0.74 and 0.80 for fraction A and 0.74, 0.84, 0.92 for fraction B with regard to yohimbine using the mobile phase of n-buthanol:glacial acetic acid:distilled water (3:1:1 v/v/v). Moreover, an indole alkaloid was detected with Rx values of 0.80 and 0.84, respectively. Fractions A and B exhibited high cytotoxic effects on T47D cells with IC50 values of 2.57 and $2.73{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. In conclusion, overall the results of this study showed that fractions of Ficus septica contain alkaloids including indole alkaloid or its derivatives and possess a cytotoxic effect on T47D cells. This research supports the idea that alkaloids in F. septica have anticancer activity.

Fourteen(14) large commercial buildings located in Seoul with friable sprayed-on surface insulation material on ceiling were investigated for fiber types in bulk material and for airborne fiber concentrations in buildings by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in order to compare the results with those by polarized light microscopy (PLM) and phase contrast microscopy (PCM). The results were as follows: 1. Chrysotile asbestos was found in one bulk sample out of total 14 bulk samples collected. Glass fiber and mineral wool were the two major constituents of the bulk samples. 2. The Na-Mg-Si-Ca-Fe-Al ratios of the EDX spectra which were normalized with the Si peak were 0-1.0-10-8.3-4.0-4.0 in mineral wool and 0-5-10-21-0-0 in chrysotile asbestos, respectively. 3. Airborne fiber concentrations were log-normalcy distributed and the geometric mean (geometric standard deviation) fiber concentrations by TEM in the underground parking lots and inside buildings were 0.0048 f/cc(1.93) and 0.0040 f/cc(2.27), respectively with no statistical difference. In the outdoor ambient air, statistically significantly lower concentration of 0.0018 f/cc(2.04) was measured. 4. The TEM/PCM ratios of airborne fiber concentrations ranged 0.5 - 2.0 for 80 % of airborne samples analyzed, end the regression equation between TEM and PCM was PCM=-0.2724+1.1355(TEM) with the coefficient of determination $R^2=0.52$. The results of this study confirmed that the sprayed-on surface insulation material found in some commercial buildings may possibly be contaminated with asbestos fiber. Since statistically significant relationship of fiber concentrations measured by PCM and TEM inside buildings and ambient air was found, previous results by PCM in ambient air could be used to estimate the ambient fiber concentrations in knowing the ratio of TEM/PCM.

Electrical properties of organic light-emitting diodes were studied in a device with 7,7,8,8-tetracyano-quinodimethane (TCNQ) to see how the TCNQ affects on the device performance. Since the TCNQ has a high electron affinity, it is used for a charge-transport and injection layer. We have made a reference device in a structure of ITO(170 nm)/TPD(40 nm)/$Alq_3$(60 nm)/LiF(0.5 nm)/Al(100 nm). And two types of devices were manufactured. One type of device is the one made by doping 5 and 10 vol% of TCNQ to N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-di(m-tolyl)-benzidine (TPD) layer. And the other type is the one made with TCNQ layer inserted in between the ITO anode and TPD organic layer. Organic layers were formed by thermal evaporation at a pressure of $10^{-6}$ torr. It was found that for the TCNQ doped devices, turn-on voltage of the device was reduced by about 20 % and the current efficiency was improved by about three times near 6 V. And for devices with TCNQ layer inserted in between the ITO anode and TPD layer, it was found that the current efficiency was improved by more than three times even though there was not much change in turn-on voltage.
The crystal structure of fully dehydrated partially Cs+-exchanged zeolite X, [Cs52Na40Si100Al92O384], a = 24.9765(10) A, has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques in the cubic space group Fd3 at 21 °C. The crystal was prepared by flow method for 5 days using exchange solution in which mole ratio of CsOH and CsNO3 was 1 : 1 with total concentration of 0.05 M. The crystal was then dehydrated at 400 °C and 2 × 10-6 Torr for 2 days. The structure was refined to the final error indices, R1 = 0.051 and wR2 (based on F2) = 0.094 with 247 reflections for which Fo > 4σ (Fo). In this structure, about fifty-two Cs+ ions per unit cell are located at six different crystallographic sites with special selectivity; about one Cs+ ion is located at site I, at the centers of double oxygen-rings (D6Rs), two Cs+ ions are located at site I', and six Cs+ ions are found at site II'. This is contrary to common view that Cs+ ions cannot pass sodalite cavities nor D6Rs because six-ring entrances are too small. Ring-opening by the formation of ?OH groups and ring-flexing make Cs+ ions at sites I, I', and II' enter six-oxygen rings. The defects of zeolite frameworks also give enough mobility to Cs+ ions to enter sodalite cavities and D6Rs. Another six Cs+ ions are found at site II, thirty-six are located at site III, and one is located at site III' in the supercage, respectively. Forty Na+ ions per unit cell are located at two different crystallographic sites; about fourteen are located at site I, the centers of D6Rs and twenty-six are also located at site II in the supercage. Cs+ ions and Na+ ions at site II are recessed ca. 0.34(1) A and 1.91(1) A into the supercage, respectively. In this work, the highest exchange level of Cs+ ions per unit cell was achieved in zeolite X by conventional aqueous solution methods and it was also shown that Cs+ ion could pass through the sixoxygen rings.
As the groundwater flows along the fractures of crystalline rocks, it will be in contact with the fracture walls mostly coated by secondary minerals which are quite different form those of host rocks. The presence of fracture-filling minerals in crystalline rocks is important on the view point of radioactive waste disposal because of their great surface reactivity. The Surichi drill hole of 200 m in depth in the Yugu area composed mainly of Precambrian gneiss was selected to study the formation process of clay minerals on the fracture wall of gneiss, and their relation with present groundwater. The water-rock interaction in fractures resulted in the formation of gibbsite and clay minerals. They are formed by two different processes : (1) Incongruent dissolution of feldspar by groundwater diffused from a fracture path into rock matrix produced smectite and illite in situ, (2) on the wall of fracture, gibbsite, kaolinite, smectite and illite are formed by precipitation of dissolved species in groundwater. They show the paragenetic sequence such as gibbsite${\leftrightarrow}$kaolinite${\leftrightarrow}$smectite or illite. The paragenetic sequence of fracture-filling minerals was controlled by increase of pH of groundwater, decrease of fracture permeability by precipitation of fillings, and immobility of alkali or alkaline earths in groundwater. The groundwater from the Surichi borehole is a $Na-HCO_{3}$ type with pH range of 8.6-9.2. The sodium and bicarbonate in groundwater would be supplied by the dissolution of albite and calcite, respectively. The saturation index of groundwater and surface water calculated by WATEQ4F indicates that gibbsite and kaolinite are under precipitation to equilibrium state, and that smectite and illite are under equilibrium to redissolution environment. The stability relation of clay minerals in the $Na_{2}O-Al_{2}O_{3}-SiO_{2}-H_{2}O$ system shows that kaolinite is stable for all waters.
