Aggressiveness in Plasmopara halstedii (sunflower downy mildew)

  • Aggressiveness was studied in seven Plasmopara halstedii (sunflower downy mildew) pathotypes: 100, 300, 304, 314, 704, 710 and 714. Aggressiveness criteria including percentage infection, latent period, sporulation density and reduction of hypocotyl length (dwarfing) were analysed in one sunflower inbred line showing a high level of quantitative resistance. Genetic relationships were detected between the seven pathotypes using 12 EST-derived markers. Pathotypes 100, 300, 304 and 314 were characterized with shorter latent period and higher sporulation density than pathotypes 710, 704 and 714. All pathotypes showed high percentage infection values and caused a large reduction in seedling size except for pathotype 314 involved in dwarfing. Pathotypes 714, 704 and 314 had an intermediary genetic position between the pathotypes 100 and 710. No correlation was detected between aggressiveness traits and EST genotypes.

Anaerobic Co-digestion of Dairy Manure and Crude Glycerin (젖소분뇨와 Crude Glycerin의 통합혐기소화)

  • In this study, the mixture ratio included 20% (GLY 20), 40% (GLY 40), and 60% (GLY 60) based on VS with the control group (GLY 0) with no crude glycerin added. Maintaining stable pH, GLY 20 and GLY 0 showed the highest total output of biogas (1.24 L/L/d) and methane(0.78 L/L/d) as its volatile solids reduction rate was 53.56%. In case of GLY 40 and GLY 60, their pH was rapidly reduced after seven days of the study, so that their anaerobic digestion was all stopped.In the results of the study, it is desirable to add crude glycerin less than 20%, and it would be necessary to have the future researches on more detailed organic loading rate of each ratio, and analysis on economic feasibility.

Improved Luminescence Properties of Polycrystalline ZnO Annealed in Reduction Atmosphere

  • The luminescence properties of polycrystalline ZnO annealed in reducing ambience ($H_2/N_2$) have been studied. An effective quenching of green luminescence with enhanced UV emission from polycrystalline ZnO is observed for the reduced ZnO. The variations of the UV and green luminescence band upon reduction treatment are investigated as a function of temperature in the range between 20 and 300 K. Upon annealing treatment in reducing ambience, the optical quality of polycrystalline ZnO is improved. The UV to green intensity ratio of sintered ZnO approaches close to zero (~0.05). However, this ratio reaches more than 13 at room temperature for polycrystalline ZnO annealed at $800^{\circ}C$ in reducing ambience. Furthermore, the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the UV band of polycrystalline ZnO is reduced compared to unannealed polycrystalline ZnO. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements clearly show that there is no direct correlation between the green luminescence and oxygen vacancy concentration for reduced polycrystalline ZnO.

Synthesis of Nanocomposite Powder for Tungsten Heavy Alloy by Hydrogen Reduction of Ultrasonic-milled Oxide Nanopowders

  • Ultrasonic-milling of metal oxide nanopowders for the preparation of tungsten heavy alloys was investigated. Milling time was selected as a process variable. XRD results of metal oxide nanopowders ultrasonic-milled for 50 and 100h showed that mean crystallite size reduced with increasing milling time and there was no evidence of contamination or change of composition by impurities. It was found that nanocomposite powders reduced at $800^{\circ}C$ in $H_2$ atmosphere had a composition of 93.1W-4.9Ni-2.0Fe by EDX analysis. Hardness of sintered samples of 50 and 100h was 390 and 463 Hv, respectively, which corresponds to the hardness of commercial products.

Tricortical-allobone Grafting in Screw Fixation for Intra-articular Calcaneal Fracture via Ollier Approach (관절 내 종골 골절에서 Ollier 접근법을 이용한 나사못 고정술 시 삼면 피질골 이식)

  • Purpose: Bone grafting is often necessary to maintain a reduction and prevent delayed collapse of reduced fracture in a treatment of severely displaced comminuted intra-articular calcaneal fractures. Herein, we analyzed the usefulness and necessary conditions to perform tricortical-allobone grafting in open reduction of calcaneal fracture via the Ollier approach. Materials and Methods: We performed a retrospective review of 57 intra-articular calcaneal fractures that underwent an operation via the Ollier approach between April 2009 and April 2015. They were divided into two groups: Group 1 (n=17) included those with tricortical-allobone grafts underneath the posterior facet fragment, and group 2 (n=40) included cases without a bone graft. We measured the $B{\ddot{o}}hler$ angle, Gissane angle, height, and width of the calcaneus at preoperative, postoperative, and final follow-up radiograph. We measured the sagittal rotational angle of the posterior facet fragment of preoperative computed tomography to analyze the effect and necessary conditions for bone grafting. We also reviewed the clinical results by the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) scale, visual analogue scale (VAS), and any complications. Results: According to the Sanders classification, there were 3 type-II fractures, 12 type-III fractures, and 2 type-IV fractures in Group 1; whereas in Group 2, there were 26 type-II fractures, 13 type-III fractures, and 1 type-IV fracture (p=0.002). Regarding the preoperative radiologic parameters, there were significant differences in the $B{\ddot{o}}hler$ angle (p=0.006), Gissane angle (p=0.043), and rotational angle of the posterior facet fragment (p=0.001). No significant difference was observed in the preoperative calcaneal height and width, as well as postoperative radiologic parameters. There was no significant clinical difference between the two groups (p=0.546). Conclusion: We suggest that a tricortical-allobone graft may be useful in open reduction and screw fixation via the Ollier approach for displaced intra-articular calcaneal fracture with a bony defect after reduction of collapsed posterior facet fragment. This graft can contribute to the stable reduction via a small approach, even without a plate.

Recycled packed-bed reactor for efficient denitrification (재순환 충전탑식 반응기를 이용한 효율적 탈질)

  • Recycled packed-bed reactor emploring immobilized microorganism was suggested in this paper for efficient denitrification. In the batch reactor, the effects of initial oxidation-reduction potential and nitrate concentration on denitrification were investigated. As the initial oxidation-reduction potential was decresed to -70 mV from +40 mV, the removal rate of nitrate was increased to 3.33 from 1.25 m9 NO$_3$$\^$-/-N/min under the experimental conditions. As the initial nitrate-N concentraion was increased to 200 mg/l, the removal rate of nitrate was proportional to the concentration of nitrate. When the concentration of nitrate-N was 400 mg/min, nitrite was detected, and when the initial nitrate-N concentration was reached at 1,000 mg/l, it took longer time for the complete nitrate removal. In order to decrease the initial oxidation-reduction potential and the nitrate-N concentration in the feed stream, the effluent was recycled to the influent stream in the packed-bed reactor. In the case of recycling, the initial oxidation-reduction potential was decreased to 30 mV from 150 mV, and the initial nitrate concentration could be decreased to 85 from 120 mg NO$_3$$\^$-/-N/l. As the result of recycling, the removal rate of nitrate was increased to 91.7% from 49.2%.

Clinical Evaluation of Passive Eruption Using Occlusal Reduction on Periodontium (교합면 삭제(occlusal reduction)를 이용한 수동적 정출 (passive eruption)이 치주조직에 미치는 영향)

  • The relationship between occlusion and periodontal health has been extensively studied. However, reports on the effects of passive eruption using occlusal reduction has not been sufficient. The purpose of the present randomized clinical trial was to assess the influence of passive eruption using occlusal reduction on the clinical periodontal parameters consisting of attachment level, pocket depth, tooth mobility, width of keratinized gingiva and osseous defect. The study was performed on 40 teeth of 16 subjects who have been treated for the moderate periodontitis at the Department of Periodontology, Pusan National University Hospital. At the baseline examination, after hygienic-phase and after 6 month from passive eruption using occlusal reduction, clinical parameters were monitored and radiographs were taken. The 20 teeth in the test group received passive eruption using occlusal reduction while the 20 control teeth did not receive any occlusal reduction. The results were as follows; 1) Degree of inflammation of periodontium was improved by initial therapy 2) Teeth received passive eruption using occlusal reduction demonstrated significantly greater reduction in pocket depth, tooth mobility and amount of bone loss, and increase in the width of keratinized gingiva, but no significant changes in the attachment level compared to the control teeth 3) There was significantly greater reduction in pocket depth, mobility, amount of bone loss and attachment level in the test teeth after initial hygienic phase when compared with baseline data. Taken together, these results suggest that the passive eruption using occlusal reduction would be helpful to improve periodontal health.

A Clinical Analysis of Intussusception by Non-operative Management (비수술적 처치가 시행된 장중첩증의 임상적 고찰)

  • Intussusception is one of the most common cause of bowel obstruction in infant under the two years old, especially in male. Clinical analysis was enrolled on 54 intussusception cases who were diagnosed by ultrasound and treated by non-operative reduction at the Presbyterian Medical Center from June 2005 to May 2007. The results were as follow. 1) There was the most common(40.7%)between thirteen and twenty four months on the distribution of age. Male(72.2%) and female(27.8%) were in the ratio of 2.6:1 on the distribution of gender 2) The frequent symptoms were abdominal pain with grizzle(100.0%), vomiting(66.7%) and diarrhea(33.3%). There was a significant difference among them(p<0.05). There was the most common(46.3%) between 10,000/$mm^3$ and 15,000/$mm^3$ in the result of WBC. 3) 42.6% of patient at a private hospital performed primary care. The treatment after initiating the symptom of intussusception was performed between 6 hrs and 12hrs (37.0%). 4) The most common type and portion of intussusception were ileo-colon(98.1%) and hepatic flexure (68.5%). 5) 88.0% at air reduction and 86.2% at barium reduction were successful. The reduction rate were similar to both techniques. There was no significant difference between them(p>0.05).

Characteristics of Solid Fuel Oxidation in a Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell

  • Oxidation behaviours of ash free coal (AFC), carbon, and H2 fuels were investigated with a coin type molten carbonate fuel cell. Because AFC has no electrical conductivity, its oxidation occurs via gasification to H2 and CO. An interesting behaviour of mass transfer resistance reduction at higher current density was observed. Since the anode reaction has the positive reaction order of H2, CO2 and H2O, the lack of CO2 and H2O from AFC results in a significant mass transfer resistance. However, the anode products of CO2 and H2O at higher current densities raise their partial pressure and mitigate the resistance. The addition of CO2 to AFC reduced the resistance sufficiently, thus the resistance reduction at higher current densities did not appear. Electrochemical impedance results also indicate that the addition of CO2 reduces mass transfer resistance. Carbon and H2 fuels without CO2 and H2O also show similar behaviour to AFC: mass transfer resistance is diminished by raising current density and adding CO2.

Activity of $V_2O_5/TiO_2$Catalyst Using Domestic Pigment Titania as Support for Nitric Oxide Reducton (국내 안료용 타이타니아를 담체로 이용한 $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ 촉매상에서 질소산화물 제거활성)

  • The activity of domestic pigment titania$(TiO_2)$ impregnated with vanadia$(V_2O_5)$ was investigated in the laboratory microreactor. The meta-titanic acid$(TiO(OH)_2)$ which was produced at Hankook Titanium was selected as the precursor for support. The domestic pigment $TiO_2$ showed higher activity in the reduction of NO with $NH_3$ than the foreign commercial $TiO_2$. $WO_3$ were added to domestic $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ catalytic system to improve the catalytic activity at higher reaction temperature between 400~50$0^{\circ}C$ Also, the deactivation of domestic $V_2O_5/TiO_2$ and $WO_3-V_2O_5/TiO_2$ catalyst by $SO_2$ and $H_2O$ was investigated.
