CuO catalyst-coated alumino-silicate fiber filters were prepared for the simultaneous removal of particulate matter and gaseous contaminants such as NOx and SOx. Hot gas cleaning experiments similar to Shell UOP process other than the catalyst supporting materials were carried out between 300 and $500^{\circ}C$ for the evaluation of the gas removal efficiency of the catalytic filter. Experimental results showed that removel efficiency for $SO_2$ was greater than 99% in the temperature range 450~$500^{\circ}C$ and more than 90% of NO was collected between 350 and $370^{\circ}C$. It was found that the higher the CuO content, the higher the removal efficiency for $SO_2$. Removal efficiency for NO was more affected by the gas cleaning temperature than by the CuO content in the catalyst-filter.
Low power consuming and highly responsive semiconductor-type microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) gas sensors are fabricated for real-time environmental monitoring applications. This subsystem is developed using a gas sensor module, a Bluetooth module, and a personal digital assistant (PDA) phone. The gas sensor module consists of a $NO_2$ or CO gas sensor and signal processing chips. The MEMS gas sensor is composed of a microheater, a sensing electrode, and sensing material. Metal oxide nanopowder is drop-coated onto a substrate using a microheater and integrated into the gas sensor module. The change in resistance of the metal oxide nanopowder from exposure to oxidizing or deoxidizing gases is utilized as the principle mechanism of this gas sensor operation. The variation detected in the gas sensor module is transferred to the PDA phone by way of the Bluetooth module.
The gas sensing characteristic of $MoS_2-MoO_2$ composite yolk-shell spheres were investigated. $MoO_3$-carbon composite spheres were prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis of aqueous droplets containing Mo-source and sucrose in nitrogen, which were converted into $MoO_3$ yolk-shell spheres by heat treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ in air. Subsequently, $MoS_2-MoO_2$ composite yolk-shell spheres were prepared by the partial sulfidation of $MoO_3$. The $MoS_2-MoO_2$ composite yolk-shell spheres showed relatively low and irreversible gas sensing characteristics at < $200^{\circ}C$. In contrast, the sensor showed high and reversible response (S=resistance ratio) to 5 ppm $NO_2$ (S=14.8) at $250^{\circ}C$ with low cross-responses (S=1.17-2.13) to other interference gases such as ethanol, CO, xylene, toluene, trimethylamine, $NH_3$, $H_2$, and HCHO. The $MoS_2-MoO_2$ composite yolk-shell spheres can be used as reliable sensors to detect $NO_2$ in a selective manner.
The effects of additives in n-type semiconducting SnO$_2$-based gas sensors on oxidizing gases were investigated. The resistivity of SnO$_2$ sensors decreased when exposed to reducing gases, which act as electronic donors. However, the resistivities of the SnO$_2$ sensors increased when exposed to oxidizing gases, which act as electronic accepters. The products formed from the reaction of oxidizing gases ever SnO$_2$-based powders were analyzed by gas chromatography as compared with those formed from the reaction of reducing gases of alcohols. The SnO$_2$ sensors doped with PdCl$_2$ or A1$_2$O$_3$ showed unique dual response patterns toward oxidizing gases of $CH_3$CN and $CH_3$NO$_2$ depending on the operating temperature. The combination of these two sensors along with proper pattern recognition technique could enhance the selectivity for the gases with electron-accepting groups.

HO$_2$ radical plays pivotal roles in the tropospheric $O_3$ formation chemistry. This radical oxidizes NO to NO$_2$ and thus HO$_2$ radical can lead to in-situ ozone formation. Numerous methods have been tried to measure concentrations of atmospheric HO$_2$ in gas phase. Detecting methods applied in the air are a chemical amplifier (Cantrell et al., 1996), FAGE (Fluorescence Assay with Gas Expansion) (Hard et al., 1984), and LIF (Laser-induced Fluorescence) (Stevens et al., 1994). These methods have been limited because of low sensitivity and interferences such as $O_3$, NO, and itself (Stevens et al.,1994). (omitted)
[ $SO_2$ ]and NO gases that come from the flue gases of most of all industrial combustion processes are harmful to everything include person and industrial facilities. For the simplification of the environmental clean-up processes, we studied the decomposition process by microwave. The microwave can destroy molecules into elementary atoms and offers energy to the atoms to react with carbons. Since the microwave is not absorbed into quartz tube and metallic chamber, the air pollution gases can be removed with much lower energy than in the case of conventional methods. We studied the decomposition of $SO_2$ and NO gases on the carbon beds by microwave. In the microwave field, the gases can be decomposed to form other compounds, such as elementary sulfur, nitrogen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. It was found that CO gas is formed at higher temperature than is $CO_2$ gas, so it needs to control the bed temperature depend on products that we want to get.
$Cr_{2}O_{3}$ thick films were fabricated by screen printing method on alumina substrates and annealed at $700^{\circ}C$, $800^{\circ}C$, and $900^{\circ}C$ in air, respectively. Structural properties examined by XRD and SEM showed (116) dominant $Cr_{2}O_{3}$ peak and increased grain sizes with the annealing. The resistance of the films decreased with increasing the annealing temperature. Gas sensing characteristics to $NH_{3}$, CO, $C_{4}H_{10}$, and NO gases showed sensitivity only to $NH_{3}$ gas. $Cr_{2}O_{3}$ thick films annealed at $700^{\circ}C$ had the sensitivity of about 15 % for 100 ppm $NH_{3}$ gas at the working temperature of $300^{\circ}C$. The thick films had good selectivity to the $NH_{3}$ gas. The response time to $NH_{3}$ gas was about 10 seconds.
We probe 12CO J=2-1 and 13CO J=1-0 properties of a Virgo disk galaxy, NGC 4402 which is located near the cluster center. Our goal is to study the impact of intra cluster medium (ICM) on the molecular gas of a galaxy in the cluster environment. It has been believed that cluster galaxies are deficient in atomic hydrogen gas (HI gas) compared to their field counterparts and now there is much evidence that low density ISM can be easily removed by ram pressure caused by ICM wind. Meanwhile, no significant molecular gas deficiency of the cluster galaxy population has been found yet they show overall lower star formation rate than galaxies in the field, and it is still controversy whether dense ISM can be also stripped by the ICM wind or not. NGC 4402 with truncated HI disk($D_{HI}/D_{opt}$ ~ 0.75 and only 36%of HI gas compare to field galaxies of a similar size) and a disturbed gas morphology, appears to have strong ongoing ram pressure. Using high resolution 12 and 13CO data of NGC 4402 from a Sub Millimeter Array (SMA), we probe the molecular gas properties under strong ICM pressure. We discuss how its star formation activity and hence the global color of NGC4402 would be changed in the future.
The effects of shield gas on the structure of methane-air nonpremixed counterflow flames were numerically investigated. The near extinction flame of a low global strain rate 20 $s^{-1}$ of 19% methane diluted by 81% nitrogen by volume and undiluted air was computed. The flame shape, centerline temperature and axial velocity profiles were compared for different velocity of the shield gas and with and without the shield gas. The effects of the velocity of the shield gas were negligible for $V_{S}/V_{F}{\leq}2$ in normal gravity. Under normal gravity conditions, the flame shape and its position with the shield gas were different from those of the flame without the shield gas, whereas no discernible effects of the shield gas along the centerline were observed in zero gravity.

The properties of off-gas generated from vitrification process of ion-exchange resin were characterized. Theoretical composition and flow rate of the off-gas were calculated based on chemical composition of resin and it's burning condition inside CCM. The calculated off-gas flow rate was 67.9Nm$^3$/h at the burning rate of 40kg/h. And the composition of off-gas was avaluated as $CO_2$(41.4%), steam(40.0%), $O_2$(13.3%), NO(3.6%), and SO$_2$(1.6%) in order. Then, actual flow rate and composition of off-gas were measured during pilot-scale demonstration tests and the results were compared with theoretical values. The actual flow rate of off-gas was about 1.6 times higher than theoretical one. The difference between theoretical and actual flow rates was caused by the in-leakage of air to the system, and the in-leakage rate was evaluated as 36.3Nm$^3$/h. Because of continuous change in the combustion parameters inside CCM, during demonstration tests, the concentration of toxic gases showed wide fluctuation. However, the concentration of CO, a barometer of incompleteness of combustion inside CCM, was stabilized soon. The result showed quasi-equilibrium state was achieved two hours after feeding of resin.
