  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of the complex fertilizers containing polyaspartic acid (PAA) on growth and $CH_4$ emission in rice field and optimum application rate of the fertilizer compared to the standard recommended application rate (control). The PAA-containing complex fertilizers (PCF) were applied at 55, 65 and 75% levels of standard recommended application rate (control). The application rate of PAA in the plot of every PCF treatment was 150g ai/10a. The PCF was applied as a basal dressing without topdressing at tillering stage. The growth parameters of rice and its nitrogen use efficiency treated with PCF at a 65 to 75% level were not different compared with those of control, and the rice yield was also not significantly different between PCF at a 65 to 75% level and control during 2 years(2010~2011) field experiment. And the $NH_4$-N content in soil was not affected by 65% to 75% level of PCF treatment. Considering overall research results such as rice yield and growth parameters PCF is not significantly different with the control and the optimum application rate of the PCF as a basal fertilization was determined to be 65~75% of the standard application rate based on the result in rice cultivation. Moreover, $CH_4$ emission rate was significantly reduced by PCF treatments, showing 216 kg and 229 kg $CH_4/ha$ at 65% and 75% PCF treatment level, respectively, compared to 266 kg $CH_4/ha$ of the control.

  • Fouling by solids and microorganisms is the major obstacle limiting the efficient use of membrane wastewater treatment. In our previous study, two stages microalgae/membrane filtration system was proposed to treat anaerobic digested palm oil mill effluent (AnPOME). This two stages microalgae/membrane filtration system had showed great potential for the treatment of AnPOME with high removal of COD, $NH_3-N$, $PO_4{^{3-}}$, TSS, turbidity, and colour. However, fouling behavior of the membrane in this two stages microalgae/membrane filtration system was still unknown. In this study, empirical models that describe permeate flux decline for dead-end filtration (pore blocking - complete, intermediate, and standard; and cake layer formation) presented by Hermia were used to fit the experimental results in identifying the fouling mechanism under different experimental conditions. Both centrifuged and non-centrifuged samples were taken from the medium with 3 days RT intervals, from day 0 to day 12 to study their influence on fouling mechanisms described by Hermia for ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF), and reverse osmosis (RO) filtration mode. Besides, a more detailed study on the use of resistance-in-series model for deadend filtration was done to investigate the fouling mechanisms involved in membrane filtration of AnPOME collected after microalgae treatment. The results showed that fouling of UF and NF membrane was mainly caused by cake layer formation and it was also supported by the analysis for resistance-in-series model. Whereas, fouling of RO membrane was dominated by concentration polarization.

  • In this study, first the ADU gel particle, an intermediate for final $UO_2$ kernel of a HTGR nuclear fuel, was prepared from sol-gel method using the broth solution which was made by mixing of the uranyl nitrate, poly vinyl alcohol and tetra-hydrofurfuryl alcohol. The prepared dried-ADU gel particles were converted to the $UO_2\;via\;UO_3$ from thermal treatment with the 4% $H_2$ atmosphere. The sizes of the spherical liquid droplets appeared $1900{\sim}2100{\mu}m$, and the harmony between the flow rate of the broth solution and the frequency and the amplitude of a vibrating system are important factors for the spherical ADU gel particles via the mono size spherical droplets. From the XRD and FT-IR analyses, the prepared ADU gel particles were judged to be a $UO_3{\cdot}xNH_3{\cdot}yH_2O$ form, and the most important factor during the thermal treatment of the dried-ADU gel particle must be avoided a rapidly heating rate in the range of $180{\sim}400^{\circ}C$, and the heating rate should be kept below $5^{\circ}C/min$.

  • In this study, simulation results of nitrogen and phosphorus removals and microbial activities for an $A_2O$ process in wastewater treatment plant are presented by using Activated Sludge Models (ASMs). Simulations were performed using pre-calibrated model and layout implemented in GPS-X simulation software. The models were used to investigate variations of SRT, water temperature, DO and C/N ratio effect on nutrients removal and microbial activity. According to the simulated results, the successful nitrification required SRT higher than 10.3 days, whereas increase of $NO_3$-N loading in the anaerobic reactor caused phosphorus release by PAOs; the effluent $NH_4$-N showed rapid change between $12^{\circ}C$(21.7 mg/L) and $13^{\circ}C$(3.2 mg/L); the effluent phosphorus was increased up to 1.9 mg/L at water temperature of $25^{\circ}C$; the DO increase was positive for heterotrophs and autotrophs growths but negative for PAOs growth; the PAOs showed low activity when C/N ratio was lower than 2.5. The experimental results indicated that the calibrated models can assure the prediction quality of the ASMs and can be used to optimize the $A_2O$ process.

  • Ten male crossbred (Thai $Native{\times}Anglo$ Nubian) goats with average live weight of $27{\pm}2$ kg were randomly assigned according to a $5{\times}5$ replicated Latin square design to receive five diets, $T_1$ = concentrate with 0% cassava chip (CC), $T_2$ = 25% CC, $T_3$ = 50% CC, $T_4$ = 75% CC and $T_5$ = 100% CC. Fresh elephant grass (FEG) was offered ad libitum as the roughage. A metabolism trial lasted for 21 days during which liveweight changes and feed intakes were measured. Based on this experiment, there were no significant differences (p>0.05) among treatment groups regarding DM intake and digestion coefficients of nutrients (DM, OM, NDF and ADF), except for $T_5$ (100% CC) which was lowest (p<0.05) in digestion coefficient of CP than $T_1$ and $T_3$. Rumen parameters (ruminal pH, $NH_3$-N and volatile fatty acids), blood urea nitrogen, blood glucose and packed cell volume were similar among treatments. Moreover, rumen microorganism populations were not affected (p>0.05) by cassava inclusion. The amount of N absorption and retention were similar among treatments, except for $T_5$ which tended to be slightly lower. Based on this experiment, it could be concluded that the optimal level of cassava inclusion to replace corn in goat diets was in the range of 25-75% of CC when fed with FEG and it was a good approach in exploiting the use of local feed resources for goat production.

  • To investigate the effects of sago palm pith (SPP) substitution of corn in the diets on intake, digestibility, rumen fermentation characteristics, nitrogen balance and microbial N Supply, five ruminally fistulated Southern indigenous cattle (mean initial BW = 226${\pm}$5 kg) were randomly assigned to a 5${\times}$5 Latin Square Design to receive five diets, $T_1$ = concentrate with 0% SPP, $T_2$ = 25% SPP, $T_3$ = 50% SPP, $T_4$ = 75% SPP and $T_5$ = 100% SPP, of dietary dry matter, respectively. Plicatulum hay (PH) was offered ad libitum as the roughage. A metabolism trial lasted for 21 days during which liveweight changes and feed intakes were measured. Based on this experiment, there were no significant differences (p>0.05) among treatments groups regarding total DM intake (OMI, NDFI and ADFI) and digestion coefficients of nutrients (DM, OM, CP, NDF and ADF), while total DM intake (% BW) was significantly (p<0.05) higher as higher levels of SPP were incorporated into diets. Rumen parameters (ruminal temperature, pH, glucose, packed cell volume, volatile fatty acid and rumen microorganism populations) were similar among treatments (p>0.05), whereas $NH_3-N$, blood urea nitrogen and molar proportion of propionate concentrations were significantly (p<0.05) higher as higher levels of SPP were incorporated into diets. The amount of N absorption, N retention and microbial protein synthesis were similar among treatments. These results indicate that SPP can be included in diets for Southern indigenous cattle to supply up to 100% of supplemental corn when fed with PH without negative impact on animal performance and it was a good approach in exploiting the use of local feed resources for beef cattle production.

  • A 3-year-old castrated male domestic shorthair cat was presented with a chief complaint of sudden onset of intermittent seizures occurring five times a day. Physical examination revealed the copper colored iris and loss of menace response at both eyes. Abnormalities of blood works and serum chemistry revealed mild erythrocytosis, severe microcytosis, and threefold increase in ALT activity. Additional liver function tests results were increased bile acid and $NH_3$ concentration. Radiographic study revealed multifocal nodules of the liver and an extrahepatic shunt was noted by ultraonography, which was confirmed by computed tomography as multiple extrahepatic shunts. The cat was scheduled for surgery applying an ameloid ring to occlude the shunt gradually. Diazepam and lactulose were instituted to the patient. However, clinical signs worsened despite medical management with shortened interval of seizures and the patient died due to cardiac arrest.

  • A pilot-scale biofilm nitiritation reactor was operated with the reject water from a large wastewater treatment plant. The effects of various operating parameters including pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, solids and organic concentrations were examined. A stable nitritation was achieved at operating pH range of 7.3 to 8.8 with an alkalinity addition. Higher operating temperature of $35{\pm}0.7^{\circ}C$ achieved more stable nitritation compared to $30{\pm}0.2^{\circ}C$. It has been noticed that nitrite accumulation maintained with DO, solids and organic concentrations range of 0.8 to 3.9 mg/L, 3,400 to 11,000 mg/L, and 86 to 572 mg/L, respectively. It seems that the accumulation of nitrite was caused by both the inhibition of $NO_2{^-}$ oxidizers due to free ammonia and the maintenance of the high operating temperature of $35^{\circ}C$ which promote to accumulate the $NH_4{^+}$ oxidizers in the reactor. According to microbial community analysis of fluorescence in situ hybridization and INT-Dehydrogenase measurements, more nitrifiers were presented in attached form compared to suspended growth.

  • The selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia was carried out in the presence of natural manganese ore (NMO) and manganese as catalysts using a homemade 1/4" reactor at $10,000hr^{-1}$ of space velocity. The inlet ammonia concentration was maintained at 2,000 ppm, with an air balance. The manganese catalyst resulted in a substantial ammonia conversion, with adsorption activation energies of oxygen and ammonia of 10.5 and 22.7 kcal/mol, respectively. Both $T_{50}$ and $T_{90}$, defined as the temperatures where 50% and 90% of ammonia, respectively, are converted, decreased significantly when alumina-supported manganese catalyst was applied. Increasing the manganese weight percent by 15 wt% increased the lower temperature activity, but 20 wt% of manganese had an adverse effect on the reaction results. An important finding of the study was that the manganese catalyst benefits from a strong sulfur tolerance in the conversion of ammonia to nitrogen.

  • [ $V_2O_5$ ] 나노선의 구조 분석을 위해 STM(Scanning Tunneling Microscopy)과 TEM(Transmission Electron Microscopy)을 이용하여 단일 $V_2O_5$ 나노선의 이미지를 얻었다. $V_2O_5$ 나노선은 상온에서 ammonium metavanadate$(NH_4VO_3)$와 양이온 교환수지$(DOWEX50{\times}8-100)$를 2차 증류수에 섞어 합성하였다. STM 시료는 3-APS(3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane)를 전 처리한 실리콘 기판에 $V_2O_5$ 나노선을 올려 만들었고, TEM 시료는 200 mesh/copper 그리드에 침전시켜 준비하였다.
