  • In the present work, the corrosion properties of Mg-xSn (x = 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 wt.%) alloys have been investigated. Potentiodynamic polarization and immersion tests were carried out in 3.5% NaCl solution of pH 7.2 at room temperature to measure the corrosion properties of Mg-xSn (x = 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 wt.%) alloys. With increase of the Sn contents, the volume fraction of the $Mg_2Sn$ phase was increased. The corrosion rate of Mg-xSn alloys was increased up to 7 wt.%Sn and decreased above 9 wt.%Sn. Initiation of galvanic site during immersion mainly occurred at Mg/$Mg_2Sn$ interface and propagation went into ${\alpha}$-Mg. For this reason, corrosion properties of Mg-xSn (added from 1 wt.%Sn to 7 wt.%Sn alloys) alloys are decreased because the galvanic site was increased with increasing Sn addition. In Mg-9wt.%Sn alloy, however, the corrosion site were changed from Mg/$Mg_2Sn$ interface to ${\alpha}$-Mg/$M_2Sng$ interface in lamellar structure. Preferentially corrosion of ${\alpha}$-Mg/$M_2Sn$ interface in lamellar structure impeded corrosion propagation went into ${\alpha}$-Mg.

  • This study examined the effect of the CaMgSn ternary phase on the aging response of the Mg-Sn-Zn alloy. The results revealed that the CaMgSn ternary phase formed in rod-like or needle-like shapes in Mg-3Zn-0.3Ca-xSn (x=1.5, 3, and 5 wt%) alloys and its size decreased as the Sn content increased from 1.5 wt% to 5 wt%. The Mg-3Zn-0.3Ca-5Sn alloy with a relatively fine CaMgSn phase was subjected to solution heat treatment and an aging process. Both the Mg-5Sn-3Zn-0.3Ca and Mg-5Sn-3Zn (base alloy) alloys had similar peak hardness values throughout all aging temperatures but the time-to-peak hardness in the Mg-5Sn-3Zn-0.3Ca alloy was 24-36 hours-earlier than that in the base alloy. Precipitates in the Mg-5Sn-3Zn-0.3Ca alloy were more refined than those in the Mg-5Sn-3Zn alloy and were mostly formed on basal planes. The $Mg_2Sn$ phase formed in either plate-like or rod-like shapes in the Mg-5Sn-3Zn alloy, whereas block-shaped $Mg_2Sn$ particles also formed in the Mg-5Sn-3Zn-0.3Ca alloy.

  • The microstructural evolution of different compositions of Mg-Sn alloys (30%Sn-70%Mg, 40%Sn-60%Mg and 50%Sn-50%Mg) is studied at first to understand the changes observed with change in tin content and deformation conditions. The Mg2Sn phase increases with increase in tin content and a significant substructure development is found in 50%Sn-50%Mg alloy. The above observation led to further deformation studies on Mg2Sn based thermoelectric materials with higher tin percentage. The microstructure in terms of Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD)measurements is studied in detail followed by the determination of thermoelectric properties i.e., Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity for both as cast and extruded Mg(2+x)Sn-Ag alloys. The electrical conductivity of the extruded Mg(2+x)Sn-.3wt%Ag {x =1} alloy was found to be more than its as cast counterpart while the Seebeck coefficient values remained almost the same.

  • In the present study, effects of an addition of Sn on the microstructure and corrosion behavior were investigated in Mg-4%Zn-(0-3)%Sn casting alloys. With an increase in the Sn content, the ${\alpha}-(Mg)$ dendritic cell size was reduced, whereas the total amount of precipitates increased due to the formation of the $Mg_2Sn$ phase. It was found in immersion and electrochemical corrosion tests that the addition of Sn has a detrimental effect on the corrosion resistance of the Mg-4%Zn alloy. Microstructural examinations of the corrosion product and the corroded surface indicated that an accelerated micro-galvanic effect by the $Mg_2Sn-phase$ particles and a less protective corrosion product on the surface were responsible for the increased corrosion rate at a higher Sn content.

  • In the present work, the effect of adding Ce on the corrosion behavior of Mg-4Al-2Sn-1Ca alloy was investigated. The studied alloys were fabricated by gravity casting method and a potentiodynamic polarization, A.C. impedance and hydrogen evolution tests were carried out in a 3.5% NaCl solution with pH 7.2 at room temperature to measure the corrosion properties of Mg-4Al-2Sn-1Ca-xCe alloys. The microstructure of the Mg-4Al-2Sn-1Ca alloy was composed of ${\alpha}$-Mg, Mg17Al12, Mg2Sn and CaMgSn phase. Also, a $Al_{11}Ce_3$ phase was newly formed by the addition of Ce. With an increase of the Ce contents, the microstructure became refined and the corrosion resistance improved.

  • In a recent study, the microstructures and mechanical properties of AM80-xSn magnesium alloys with semi solid casting and hot extrusion process were investigated. With increasing Sn content, the amount of ${\beta}$(Mg2Sn) phase increased, while the ${\alpha}-Mg$ dendritic size decreased. The hardness was increased by the Mg2Sn as the Sn content increased. With increasing Sn content, permanent mold cast and semi solid cast AM80 Mg alloy showed less reduction of hardness and also of extruded AM80 Mg alloy after annealing. In the case of the mechanical properties, the extruded semi solid casting AM80 Mg alloy showed higher tensile strength and yield strength with increasing Sn content compared to the extruded permanent mold cast AM80 Mg alloy at room temperature.

  • The microstructure, electrical conductivity and hardness variation of an AZ91-5wt%Sn Mg alloy sample during a solid-solution and aging heat treatment were instigated by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and by Rockwell hardness techniques in this study. The XRD result shows that the main phases in the as-casted alloy are ${\alpha}$-Mg, $Mg_{17}Al_{12}$ and $Mg_2Sn$. From the SEM images of the AZ91-5wt%Sn Mg alloy after the solution treatment, the $Mg_{17}Al_{12}$ phases in the alloy were found to have dissolved into the matrix with an increase in the holding time during the solution treatment, but $Mg_2Sn$ phases were clearly observable. The highest peak hardness of the AZ91-5wt%Sn Mg alloy is 82HRE at an aging temperature of $200^{\circ}C$.

  • Tin oxide (SnO2) nanocrystals are synthesized by a thermal evaporation method using a mixture of SnO2 and Mg powders. The synthesis process is performed in air at atmospheric pressure, which makes the process very simple. Nanocrystals with a belt shape start to form at 900 ℃ lower than the melting point of SnO2. As the synthesis temperature increases to 1,100 ℃, the quantity of nanocrystals increases. The size of the nanocrystals did not change with increasing temperature. When SnO2 powder without Mg powder is used as the source material, no nanocrystals are synthesized even at 1,100 ℃, indicating that Mg plays an important role in the formation of the SnO2 nanocrystals at temperatures as low as 900 ℃. X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the SnO2 nanocrystals have a rutile crystal structure. The belt-shaped SnO2 nanocrystals have a width of 300~800 nm, a thickness of 50 nm, and a length of several tens of micrometers. A strong blue emission peak centered at 410 nm is observed in the cathodoluminescence spectra of the belt-shaped SnO2 nanocrystals.

  • A new $Mg_{2-x}MN_xSnO_4$ phosphor with an inverse spinel structure was synthesized by the solid-state reaction technique. The photoluminescence properties of the $Mg_2SnO_4$:Mn phosphors were investigated under 147nm -vacuum ultraviolet ray excitation. The Mn-doped $Mg_2SnO_4$ phosphor exhibited high emission intensity with the spectrum centered at 500nm wavelength. It was explained that the green emission in $Mg_2SnO_4$:Mn phosphor has originated from energy transfer from $^4T_1$ to $^6A_1$ of $Mn^{2+}$ ion at tetrahedral site of the spinel structure. The $Mn^{2+}$ ion concentration exhibiting the maximum emission intensity under the excitation of 147nm-vacuum ultraviolet ray was 0.25mol%. And the decay time of the phosphor was shorter than 10ms.
