  • Let M be a minimally immersed closed hypersurface in $S^{n+1}$, II the second fundamental form and $S = \Vert II \Vert^2$. It is well known that if $0 \leq S \leq n$, then $S \equiv 0$ or $S \equiv n$ and totally geodesic hypersheres and Clifford tori are the only possible minimal hypersurfaces with $S \equiv 0$ or $S \equiv n$ ([6], [2]). From these results, Chern suggested some questions on the study of compact minimal hypersurfaces on the sphere with S =constant: what are the next possible values of S to n, and does in the ambient sphere\ulcorner By the way, S is defined extrinsically but, in fact, it is an intrinsic invariant for the minimal hypersurface, i.e., S = n(n-1) - R, where R is the scalar, curvature of M. Some partial answers have been obtained for dim M = 3: Assuming $M^3 \subset S^4$ is closed and minimal with S =constant, de Almeida and Brito [1] proved that if $R \geq 0$ (or equivalently $S \leq 6$), then S = 0, 3 or 6, Peng and Terng ([5]) proved that if M has 3 distint principal curvatures, then S = 6, and in [3] Chang showed that if there exists a point which has two distinct principal curvatures, then S = 3. Hence the problem for dim M = 3 is completely done. For higher dimensional cases, not much has been known and these problems seem to be very hard without imposing some more conditions on M.

  • A total of 197 fecal specimens was prepared for quantitative examination of helminth eggs by modified Kato's cellophane thick smear (M.C.T.S.) and Stoll's dilution egg counting technique (D.E,C.T.). The comparative effectiveness of two techniques was evaluated and conversion function was deduced. The average time required for the microscopic examination on one slide by M.C.T.S. was 12.6 minutes and that of D.E.C.T. was 14.6 minutes. M.C.T.S. showed lower false negative rate than D.E.C.T in light worm burden cases. Functions to convert the counts obtained by M.C.T.S. to E.P.G. by Stoll's dilution egg counting technique were $47.86{\times}10^{0.87{\;}logM.C.T.S.},{\;}$ in A. lumbricoides, $41.69{\times}10^{0.82{\;}logM.C.T.S.}$ in T. trichiura and $63.10{\times}10^{0.85{\;}logM.C.T.S.}$ in C. sinensis. It was suggested M.C.T.S. be better than D.E.C.T. for the quantitative examination of intestinal helminthiases such as A. lumbricoides, T. trichiura, and C. sinensis infections even in the cases with low worm burden.

  • Let R be a commutative ring with a non-zero identity, S be a multiplicatively closed subset of R and M be a unital R-module. In this paper, we define a submodule N of M with (N :R M)∩S = ∅ to be weakly S-prime if there exists s ∈ S such that whenever a ∈ R and m ∈ M with 0 ≠ am ∈ N, then either sa ∈ (N :R M) or sm ∈ N. Many properties, examples and characterizations of weakly S-prime submodules are introduced, especially in multiplication modules. Moreover, we investigate the behavior of this structure under module homomorphisms, localizations, quotient modules, cartesian product and idealizations. Finally, we define two kinds of submodules of the amalgamation module along an ideal and investigate conditions under which they are weakly S-prime.

  • In normal Fenton's reagent, the reductive mechanism of carbon tetrachloride (CT) with superoxide radical (${O_2}^-$.) was observed and the rate of ${O_2}^-$. production was investigated as a function of $H_2O$$_2$ concentration and pH. As pH was increased, the rate of 1-hexanol degradation was rapidly decreased from 90% (at pH 3) to 5% (at pH 11). On the other hand, more degradation of carbon tetrachloride was observed at higher pH regimes indicating Fenton's reaction is an oxidant-reductant co-existing system at neutral pHs. The rate of $O_2^{-}$ . production was observed at different $H_2$$O_2$ concentrations and at different pHs. The rate increased from (45.3$\pm$7.8) x $10^{-6}$ M/s to (151.0$\pm$26.2) x $10^{-6}$ M/s ($294mM H_2$$O_2$) at pH 11: the rate 3150 increased from (22.1$\pm$3.8) x $10^{-6}$ M/s at pH 7 to (151.0$\pm$26.2) x $^10{-6}$ M/s at pH 11 with 294mM $H_2$$O_2$, These results showed that Fenton's reagent could be applied at wide pH regimes. Especially, carbon tetrachloride, which can not be easily adsorbed to soils and then can be dissolved into groundwater causing a cancer, could be efficiently treated by Fenton's reagent.reagent.

  • We investigate when the .product of two smooth manifolds admits a weakly Lagrangian embedding. Assume M, N are oriented smooth manifolds of dimension m and n,. respectively, which admit weakly Lagrangian immersions into $C^m$ and $C^n$. If m and n are odd, then $M\;{\times}\;N$ admits a weakly Lagrangian embedding into $C^{m+n}$ In the case when m is odd and n is even, we assume further that $\chi$(N) is an even integer. Then $M\;{\times}\;N$ admits a weakly Lagrangian embedding into $C^{m+n}$. As a corollary, we obtain the result that $S^n_1\;{\times}\;S^n_2\;{\times}\;...{\times}\;S^n_k$, $\kappa$>1, admits a weakly Lagrang.ian embedding into $C^n_1+^n_2+...+^n_k$ if and only if some ni is odd.

  • In this study, flow duration analysis was conducted at the Gumbo stage gauging station due to construction of the Youngchun dam. The flow duration characteristics were $10.49\;m^3/s$ of drought flow, $13.30\;m^3/s$. of low flow, $15.65\;m^3/s$ of normal flow, and $25.00\;m^3/s$ abundant flow before construction of Youngchun dam. But after construction of Youngchun dam, the flow duration characteristics were $2.07\;m^^3/s,\;2.89\;m^3/s,\;4.0\;m^3/s,\;9.36\;m^3/s$ and they had been deteriorated. Applying the Physical Habitat Simulation Model by Instream Flow Incremental Methodology, the Weighted Usable Area(WUA)-Discharge Curve was developed for Zacco Platypus according to the growth stages. Using the WUA-Discharge Curve, the WUA Duration Curve was developed with exceedance probability of daily flow and evaluated fish habitat conditions due to the construction of Youngchun dam. As an evaluation result, the WUA was reduced and fish habitat environment was deteriorated due to the construction of Youngchun dam during the spawning and growth period of Zacco Platypus. However the exceedence probability of the $90\;\%$, irrigation water supply from the Youngchun dam improved flow duration characteristics and Weighted Usable Area as well as fish habitat.

  • Several geophysical surveys(electrical resistivity, electromagnetic, seismic refraction, CPR) were conducted to primarily investigate the gallery and the geomembrane at an abandoned mine(Imcheon mine). The subsurface structure mapped from seismic refraction survey mainly consists of three velocity layers(>1000 m/s, 1000∼2000 m/s,<2000 m/s). Top of the bedrock, whose velocities exceed 2000 m/s, appears to be at depth of 7.5∼10m. Higher resistivities (of ten thousands-hundred of thousands ohm-m) are interpreted to be associated with a open(cavities) gallery. The events at depth of approximately 0.5∼0.7m in GPR sections are probably caused by high-density-poly-ethylene geomembrane. Taking into consideration of the differences in the spatial resolution between georadar and electrical surveys, the events of geomembrane correspond to the top of the high resistivities at depth of about 2m. The segments, characterized with the higher conductivities in the electromagnetic data and the lower resistivities in the electrical resistivity data, are probably associated with surface water or tear zone of geomembrane.

  • In this paper, the analytical method to derive wind fragility for urban street tree in Korea was shown. Monte Carlo Simulation method was used to determine the probability of failure for urban street tree. This probability result was used to determine wind fragility parameters for four types of tree based on the study of street tree species in urban area in Daegu, Korea. Wind fragility for street tree was presented in terms of median capacity and standard deviation of the natural logarithm of the capacity. Results showed that the dominant factor affecting the probability of failure of tree under wind load was their diameter. Moreover, amongst the four types of tree chosen, the tree with height 7m and diameter 35cm had the lowest probability of failure under wind loading, whereas the tree with height 8m and diameter 30cm could resist the least wind loading. The median failure wind speed for urban street tree with height 7m were 43.8m/s and 50.6m/s for diameter 30cm and 35cm, respectively. Also, for tree with height 8m, their median failure wind speeds were 38.7m/s and 45.4m/s for tree with diameter 30cm and 35cm, respectively.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the difference of surface roughness of composite resin according to composite resin type, polishing methods, and use of resin sealant. Two hundred rectangular specimens, sized $8{\times}3{\times}2mm$, were made of Micro-new (Bisco, Inc., Schaumburg, IL, U.S.A) and Filtek Supreme (3M ESPE Dental Products, St. Paul, MN, U.S.A.), and divided into two groups; Micronew-M group, Filtek Supreme-S group. Specimens for each composite group were subdivided into five groups by finishing and polishing instruments used; M1 & S1(polyester strip), M2 & S2 (Sof-Lex disc), M3 & S3 (Enhance disc and polishing paste), M4 & S4(Astropol) and M5 & S5 (finishing bur), Polished groups were added letter B after the application of resin surface sealant (Biscover), eg, M1B and S1B. After specimens were stored with distilled water for 24hr, average surface roughness (Ra) was taken using a surface roughness tester. Representative specimens of each group were examined by FE-SEM (S-4700: Hitachi High Technologies Co., Tokyo, Japan). The data were analysed using paired t-test, ANOVA and Duncan's tests at the 0.05 probability level. The results of this study were as follows ; 1. The lowest Ra was achieved in all groups using polyester strip and the highest Ra was achieved in M5, S5 and M5B groups using finishing bur. On FE-SEM, M1 and S1 groups provided the smoothest surfaces, M5 and S5 groups were presented the roughest surfaces and voids by debonding of filler on the polished specimens. 2. There was no significant difference in Ra between Micronew and Filtek Supreme before the application of resin sealant, but Micronew was smoother than Filek Supreme after the application of resin sealant. 3. There was significant corelation between Ra of type of composite resin and polishing methods before the application of resin sealant (p=0.000), but no significant interaction between them after the application of resin sealant. On FE-SEM, most of composite resin surfaces were smooth after the application of resin sealant on the polished specimens. 4. Compared with before and after the application of resin sealant in group treated in the same composite and polishing methods, Ra of M4B and M5B was statistically lower than that of M4 and M5, and S5B was lower than that of S5, respectively (p<0.05). In conclusion, surface roughness by polishing instruments was different according to type of composite resin. Overall, polyester strip produced the smoothest surface, but finishing bur produced the roughest surface. Application of resin sealant provided the smooth surfaces in specimens polished with Enhance, Astropol and finishing bur, but not provided them in specimens polished with Sof-Lex disc.
