  • Earthquake records written in the history documents such as “SeungJeongWon IlKi” and “Chosun Wangjo Shilok” for the earthquakes occurred around the offshore near Yangyang and Samcheok area in June, 1681, have been analyzed to estimate the intensity distribution and epicenters as well as magnitudes. Three consecutive earthquakes were analysed, which occurred near those area on June 12, 17, and 26, 1681. The Main-shock occurred on June 12, 1681 was felt in almost every provinces of Korea while after-shocks occurred on June 17 and 26, 1681, were felt in several provinces restrictively. Although the main-shock was felt in the entire provinces, the real damage had been concentrated in Kangwon province. A block of rock collapsed to fall due to main-shock in the mountain near Samcheok. No other man casualties were reported except a death due to being thrown off a horse by ground shaking in Seoul. Local micro-tsunami seems to be generated at the offshore of Samcheok due to the main-shock. The main-shock seems to be occurred in the offshore between Yangyang and Samcheok (38.0oN and 129.0oE) , the epicenter intensity and magnitude of which is over 8 in MMI and 6½ in Ms, respectively.

  • The ISO document of ISO/TC/190/SC3/WG11/N11 is a working draft of international standard (WD) dealing with analytical method for the determination of explosives and related compounds using high performance liquid chromatography. The scope of this WD covers the storage of samples, preparing test portion, extraction and instrumentation. The main purpose of this study was to improve the extraction conditions which were already adopted in the WD. For this purpose, mechanical shaking method could be corresponded up to 18 hours of ultrasonic bath extraction in the WD was tested. Methanol was also tested with the intention of being added as an extracting solvent other than acetonitrile in the WD. According to the results, 16 hours of mechanical shaking method showed statistically the same effectiveness as that of 18 hours of ultrasonic bath extraction. In case of extracting solvent, methanol also showed statistically the same extraction capability as acetonitrile for DNB, TNT, 2-A-DNT and 2,4-DNT. However, the recovery rate of TNB with methanol extraction was 40% higher than that of acetonitrile extraction. Through adding mechanical shaking method into committee draft (cf. the next stage draft of the WD during the process for making international standard), ISO standard of analyzing explosives and related compounds in soil would become more useful in dealing with huge number of field samples in the laboratory. In other aspect, adopting methanol as an alternative extracting solvent would be very effective in the terms of exchangeability with GC-ECD/MS method which is being developed by German experts.

  • Mugwort (Artemisia montana), which is a perennial plant mainly distributed throughout Northeast Asian regions, has been used as a preferred source of various foods and traditional medicines in Korea. In particular, as essential oils extracted from mugwort were reported to be biologically active, its steam distillate has been widely used to treat various conditions, such as itching, hemorrhoids, and gynecological inflammation. Therefore, efforts have been devoted to develop effective methods for the collection of bioactive essential oils from mugwort. In this study, five mugwort extracts were obtained using different extraction conditions, namely, 6 % ethanol at room temperature and at 80 ℃, pure ethanol, n-hexane, and an adsorbent resin. To evaluate the five extracts of mugwort, area-under-the-curve values (AUCs), chemical profiles, and major bioactive essential oil contents were investigated using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). An overall assessment of the volatile components, including essential oils, in the five extracts was conducted using AUCs, and the individual essential oil in each extract was identified. Furthermore, the four major essential oils (1,8-cineole, camphor, borneol, and α-terpineol), which are known to possess anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory activities, were quantified using authentic chemical standards. Based on the evaluation results, pure ethanol was the best extractant out of the five used in this study. This study provides evaluation results for the five different mugwort extracts and would be helpful for developing extraction methods to efficiently collect the bioactive oil components for medical purposes using chemical profiles of the extracts.

  • Recently, owing to the high demand for eco-friendly cars in the automotive industry, noise and vibrations have become major challenges. The use of laminated damping steel is increasing in response to these demands. Laminated damping steel is primarily used in sound insulation plates. The vibration energy is converted into thermal energy due to the viscoelastic resin being located between two steel sheets and being able to damp the vibrations when an external force, such as, noise or vibration is applied to the steel plate. Laminated damping steel is chiefly applied to dash panels in automotive body parts, and because of its structure, junction technology for bonding with other components is necessary. However, there has not been sufficient research conducted on junctions. In this study, regardless of the electrode shape, in the range of 4.0 ~ 8.0 kA welding current, the same welding force and welding time were applied which were 2.8 kN and 200 m/s (12 cycles) and the tensile shear load and nugget size were analyzed after the resistance spot welding between different materials of laminated damping steel with a thickness of 1.035 mm. The results show that in the range of 5 ~ 8 kA welding current, 1.035 mm laminated damping steel meets the MS181-15 standard, which is the technical standard of Hyundai-Kia Motors.

  • Background: Pollinators help plants to reproduce and support economically valuable food for humans and entire ecosystems. However, declines of pollinators along with population growth and increasing agricultural activities hamper this mutual interaction. Nectar and pollen are the major reward for pollinators and flower morphology and volatiles mediate the specialized plant-pollinator interactions. Limited information is available on the volatile profiles attractive to honey bees and bumblebees. In this study we analyzed the volatile organic compounds of the flowers of 9 different plant species that are predominantly visited by honey bees and bumblebees. The chemical compositions of the volatiles were determined using a head space gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method, designed to understand the plant-pollinator chemical interaction. Results: Results showed the monoterpene 1,3,6-octatriene, 3,7-dimethyl-, (E) (E-𝞫-ocimene) was the dominating compound in most flowers analyzed, e.g., in proportion of 60.3% in Lonicera japonica, 48.8% in Diospyros lotus, 38.4% Amorpha fruticosa and 23.7% in Robinia pseudoacacia. Ailanthus altissima exhibited other monoterpenes such as 3,7-dimethyl-1,6-octadien-3-ol (𝞫-linalool) (39.1%) and (5E)-3,5-dimethylocta-1,5,7-trien-3-ol (hotrienol) (32.1%) as predominant compounds. Nitrogen containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were occurring principally in Corydalis speciosa; 1H-pyrrole, 2,3-dimethyl- (50.0%) and pyrimidine, 2-methyl- (40.2%), and in Diospyros kaki; 1-triazene, 3,3-dimethyl-1-phenyl (40.5%). Ligustrum obtusifolium flower scent contains isopropoxycarbamic acid, ethyl ester (21.1%) and n-octane (13.4%) as major compounds. In Castanea crenata the preeminent compound is 1-phenylethanone (acetophenone) (46.7%). Conclusions: Olfactory cues are important for pollinators to locate their floral resources. Based on our results we conclude monoterpenes might be used as major chemical mediators attractive to both honey bees and bumblebees to their host flowers. However, the mode of action of these chemicals and possible synergistic effects for olfaction need further investigation.

  • Carrier-selective contacts (CSCs) solar cells are considerably attractive on highly efficient crystalline silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells due to their advantages of high thermal tolerance and the simple fabrication process. CSCs solar cells require a hole selective contact (HSC) layer that selectively collects only holes. In order to selectively collect holes, it must have a work function characteristic of 5.0 eV or more when contacted with n-type Si. The VOx, NiOx, and CuIx thin films were fabricated and analyzed respectively to confirm their potential usage as a hole-selective contact (HSC) layer. All thin films showed characteristics of band-gap engergy > 3.0 eV, work function > 5.0 eV and minority carrier lifetime > 1.5 ms.

  • NdgR, a global regulator in soil-dwelling and antibiotic-producing Streptomyces, is known to regulate branched-chain amino acid metabolism by binding to the upstream region of synthetic genes. However, its numerous and complex roles are not yet fully understood. To more fully reveal the function of NdgR, phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to assess the effects of an ndgR deletion mutant of Streptomyces coelicolor. The deletion of ndgR was found to decrease the levels of isoleucine- and leucine-related fatty acids but increase those of valine-related fatty acids. Furthermore, the defects in leucine and isoleucine metabolism caused by the deletion impaired the growth of Streptomyces at low temperatures. Supplementation of leucine and isoleucine, however, could complement this defect under cold shock condition. NdgR was thus shown to be involved in the control of branched-chain amino acids and consequently affected the membrane fatty acid composition in Streptomyces. While isoleucine and valine could be synthesized by the same enzymes (IlvB/N, IlvC, IlvD, and IlvE), ndgR deletion did not affect them in the same way. This suggests that NdgR is involved in the upper isoleucine and valine pathways, or that its control over them differs in some respect.

  • In this study, a high-photoresponsivity self-powered deep ultraviolet (DUV) photodetector based on an Ag2O/β-Ga2O3 heterojunction was fabricated by depositing a p-type Ag2O thin film onto an n-type β-Ga2O3 layer. The device characteristics after post-annealing at temperatures ranging from 0 to 400 ℃ were investigated. Our DUV devices exhibited typical rectification characteristics. At a post-annealing temperature of 300 ℃, the as-fabricated device had a low leakage current of 4.24 × 10-11 A, ideality factor of 2.08, and a barrier height of 1.12 eV. Moreover, a high photoresponsivity of 12.87 mA/W was obtained at a 100 µW/cm2 light intensity at a 254 nm wavelength at zero bias voltage, the detectivity was 2.70 × 1011 Jones, and the rise and fall time were 29.76, 46.73 ms, respectively. Based on these results, the Ag2O/β-Ga2O3 heterojunction photodetector operates without an externally applied voltage and has high responsivity, which will help in the performance improvement of ultraviolet sensing systems.

  • We analysed the surgical outcomes of immediate reoperations after mitral valve repair. Material and Method: Eighteen patients who underwent immediate reoperation for failed mitral valve repair from April 1995 through July 2001 were reviewed retrospectively. There were 13 female patients. The mitral valve disease was regurgitation (MR) in 12 patients, stenosis (MS) in 3, and mixed lesion in 3. The etiologies of the valve disease were rheumatic in 9 patients, degenerative in 8, and endocarditis in 1. The causes of reoperation was residual MR in 13 patients, residual MS in 4, and rupture of left ventricle in 1. Fourteen patients had rerepair for residual mitral lesions (77.8%) and four underwent replacement. Result: There was no early death. After mean follow-vp of 33 months, there was one late death. Echocardiography revealed no or grade 1 of MR (64.3%) in 9 patients and no or mild MS in 11 patients (78,6%). Reoperation was done in one patient. The cumulative survival and freedom from valve-related reoperation at 6 years were 94% and 90%, respectively. The cumulative freedom from recurrent MR and MS at 4 years were 56% and 44%, respectively. Conclusion: This study suggests that immediate reoperation for failed mitral valve repair offers good early and intermediate survival, and mitral valve rerepair can be successfully performed in most of patients. However, because mitral rerepair have high failure rate, especially in rheumatic valve disease, adequate selections of valvuloplasty technique and indication are important to reduce the failure rate of mitral rerepair.
