Insecticidal Activity of Coptis chinensis Extract Against Myzus persicae (Sulzer)

  • In view of the environmental and health hazards posed by synthetic insecticides, the use of plant products as botanical insecticides has gained increasing in recent years. In this study, we reported the insecticidal activity of extracts isolated from Coptis chinensis. On crude extraction, among the various solvent types tested (water, 1% (w/v) of sodium hydroxide, 70% ethanol), the 70% ethanol extract showed the best insecticidal activity (36.5%). Three different fractions (n-hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate) were obtained from crude extract (70% ethanol) of the chloroform fraction and found to have noteworthy insecticidal activity (62.9%) by filter paper contact bioassay. Their chemical structures were identified as 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol and aniline by head space-GC-MS analysis. Both compounds displayed a dose-dependent insecticidal activity of Myzus persicae (Sulzer). Insecticidal activity at the lowest concentration tested (500 ppm) approached 85.4% in the aniline compared with 79.9% in the 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol. The insecticidal activity was greater for the aniline than 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol. It is believed that the insecticidal activity is due mainly to the presence of aniline.

Surgical Treatment of Discrete Subaortic Stenosis (대동맥판막하 막상협착증의 수술요법)

  • During the 4 year period from 1982 through 1985, twelve patients have undergone operations for discrete subaortic stenosis with good short-term clinical result at Department of Thoracic and cardiovascular Surgery, S.N.U.H. According to the cineangiographic and operative findings, nine of the 12 patients were classified as Deutsch type I, the other 3 as type II, and eleven of the 12 had one or more associated anomalies of the cardiovascular system such as PDA[5], VSD[5], left SVC[2], MS[1], COA[1], supramitral membrane[1], DORY[1], right aortic arch[1], DCRV[1], and TOF[1] [one with Shone`s complex], and three of them had secondary cardiac disorders such as aortic regurgitation[3],mitral regurgitation[2], and tunnel shaped dynamic obstruction of left ventricular outflow tract[2]. We have performed membrane resection via oblique aortotomy with retraction of the aortic cusps in 7 cases and via VSD from right cardiac chamber in 5 cases with large VSD and have also performed the operations on the correctable associated anomalies. There was only one operative death in patient with associated TOF due to neurologic complication and no other postoperative difficulties except in one patient with transient heart block resolved spontaneously on postoperative 3rd day. To our knowledge, this article is the first report of operation for discrete subaortic stenosis in Korean literature.

이종접합 태양전지를 위한 PECVD 방식으로 증착 된 Intrinsic a-Si:H layer 최적화에 관한 연구

  • 이종접합 태양전지에서 Intrinsic a-Si:H의 역할은 상당히 중요하다. Passivation 효과와 높은 Voc에 이르는 핵심적인 Layer이다. 본 연구는 Intrinsic a-Si:H Layer의 증착조건을 가변하여 최적의 Passivation 효과를 얻는데 목적이 있다. 웨이퍼는 n-Type $500\;{\mu}m$두께에를 사용하였다. Intrinsic a-Si:H Layer는 $SiH_4$ 가스와 $H_2$ 가스를 혼합하여 증착하게 되는데 혼합비는 1:5로 고정하였다. 증착두께는 이종접합 태양전지에서 필요한 5nm로 고정하였으며 증착장비는 PECVD를 이용하였다. PECVD는 VHF(60MHz)를 이용하였고 증착온도는 $200^{\circ}C$로 고정하여 진행하였다. 가변내용은 전극거리와 파워, 압력이다. 전극거리는 20mm에서 80mm까지 가변하였고 압력은 100mTorr에서 500mTorr까지 가변하였다. 파워는 플라즈마의 방정특성을 알아본 후 최소파워를 이용하여 증착하였다. 이는 증착 시 플라즈마에 의한 박막 손상을 최소화하기 위함이다. 측정은 QSSPC 방식으로 Carrier Lifetime과 Implied Voc를 측정하였으며 두께는 Ellipsometry를 이용하여 측정하였다. 전극거리 60mm에서 증착압력은 400mTorr이고 파워는 $14mW/cm^2$에서 가장 높은 Carrier Lifetime 과 Implied Voc를 나타내었다. Carrier Lifetime은 2.2ms이고 Implied Voc는 709mV를 달성 하였다. Carrier Lifetime이 높으면 Surface Recombination이 낮다는 의미이며 이는 고효율 이종접합 태양전지 제작에 있어서 직렬저항을 줄일 수 있는 필수적인 요소이다. Implied Voc는 이종접합 태양전지의 Voc에 직결된 인자로 이종접합 태양전지의 Voc를 예상할 수 있는 중요한 요소이다.

Investigation of biodegradation pathway of dibenzofuran by Novosphingobium pentaromativorans US6-1 via transcriptomic and mass-spectrometric analysis (전사체와 대사물질 구조분석을 통한 Novosphingobium pentaromativorans US6-1의 dibenzofuran 분해 경로 해석)

  • Biodegradation pathway of dibenzofuran (DBF) of Novosphingobium pentaromativorans US6-1, a high-molecular-weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons degrading strain, was investigated via analysis of metabolic intermediates and transcriptome. As a result, 3(2H)-benzofuranone, a basic skeleton of the metabolic intermediates produced by lateral dioxygenation process, was detected as an intermediate. RNA-Seq analysis confirmed that most of the expressed genes upon exposure to DBF were related to the lateral degradation pathway. Based on these results, the biodegradation pathway of DBF by N. pentaromativorans US6-1 was proposed.

Airborne Chlorpyrifos Concentrations and RBC Cholinesterase Activity of Workers in Its Formulation Workplace (클로르피리포스 제조업장의 기중 농도와 작업자의 적혈구 콜린에스테라제 활성도)

  • Airborne chlorpyrifos concentrations in formulation workplaces have not been determined in Korea. The aim of the study was to evaluate chlorpyrifos concentrations of air in a formulation workplace and recognize the RBC cholinesterase activities for the formulation workers. 30 air samples (personal or area sampling) were collected and bood samples from 10 workers were collected for RBC chlorinesterase (RBC AChE) activity in a factory on May 2008. Air samples were collected by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) method and were analyzed by GC-MS. Airborne chlorpyrifos concentrations ranged from 0.003 to $12.90mg/m^3$ and geometric mean (GM) was $0.15\;mg/m^3.$ Compared to Korean Occupational Exposure Limit (KOEL) of 0.1 (2011) or $0.2\;mg/m^3$ (2008), at 95% confidence, airborne concentrations exceeded the KOEL 69.7% or 56.1% of the time or less, indicating that this concentration level was unacceptable according to exposure assessment using a LogNorm2$^{(R)}$. Since the workers were continually at work on the organophosphate or carbamate pesticides formulation, individual baseline for RBC AChE activity was not determined. As the results of comparison with reference average value of RBC AChE activity, it was found that a worker was below 70% RBC AChE activity and five workers were abnormal.

A method based on Multi-Convolution layers Joint and Generative Adversarial Networks for Vehicle Detection

  • In order to achieve rapid and accurate detection of vehicle objects in complex traffic conditions, we propose a novel vehicle detection method. Firstly, more contextual and small-object vehicle information can be obtained by our Joint Feature Network (JFN). Secondly, our Evolved Region Proposal Network (EPRN) generates initial anchor boxes by adding an improved version of the region proposal network in this network, and at the same time filters out a large number of false vehicle boxes by soft-Non Maximum Suppression (NMS). Then, our Mask Network (MaskN) generates an example that includes the vehicle occlusion, the generator and discriminator can learn from each other in order to further improve the vehicle object detection capability. Finally, these candidate vehicle detection boxes are optimized to obtain the final vehicle detection boxes by the Fine-Tuning Network(FTN). Through the evaluation experiment on the DETRAC benchmark dataset, we find that in terms of mAP, our method exceeds Faster-RCNN by 11.15%, YOLO by 11.88%, and EB by 1.64%. Besides, our algorithm also has achieved top2 comaring with MS-CNN, YOLO-v3, RefineNet, RetinaNet, Faster-rcnn, DSSD and YOLO-v2 of vehicle category in KITTI dataset.

Comparison of Liquid- and Vapor-Phase Spray Characteristics of E85 Fuel using Schlieren Visualization Technique (쉴리렌 가시화 기법을 이용한 E85 연료의 액상 및 기상 분무 비교)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the liquid- and vapor-phase spray characteristics, such as spray tip penetration and spray angle using gasoline direct injection (GDI) injector with multi-hole. The vapor-phase spray was captured by the Schlieren visualization system, which consists of high-speed camera, LED lamp, concave mirrors, and knife-edge. The liquid-phase spray was visualized by Mie-scattering techniques. Both spray images of vapor- and liquid-phase were visualized under 373 K of ambient temperature, 1 bar of ambient pressure, and 100/200 bar of injection pressure. The energizing duration was fixed at 1.5 ms. From the analysis of experimental results, it revealed that the increased injection pressure induced an early vaporization due to the improvement of droplet atomization. The spray tip penetration and spray angle in vapor-phase were higher than those in liquid-phase. The difference in the spray tip penetration between vapor- and liquid-spray gradually increased with the time elapsed after the injection. Even with the spray angle characteristics, it was found that the difference between the spray angle of liquid and vapor spray gradually grew after they entered steady-state conditions.

Anti-bacterial properties and safety evaluation of disinfectant using Dendropanax morbifera (Hwangchil) extract for passenger cabin in the subway (지하철 객실 적용을 위한 황칠 추출물 소독제의 항균특성 및 안전성 평가)

  • Due to the syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, the subway passenger cabin should be continuously sterilized. However, a disinfectant such as chlorine is toxic and can lead to different issues to human health. In this paper, we introduced a novel disinfectant based on natural product (Dendropanax morbifera extract). Via ultra-high performance liquid chromatography - mass spectrometer (UHPLC-MS), different compounds from Dendropanax morbifera extract showed antivirus potentials. Antimicrobial experiments confirmed that the air-disinfectant containing Dendropanax morbifera can eliminate harmful microorganisms including Gram (-), Gram (+), and yeast within 5 mins. The as-prepared air-disinfectant also showed high antivirus activity against H1N1, HRV, and EV71. Deodorization test also indicates that the as-prepared air-disinfectant can lower the harmful gas such as ammonia and trimethylamine in the atmosphere. To evaluate the potential of air-disinfectant containing Dendropanax morbifera in practical applications, different safety tests including acute oral toxicity, acute skin irritation, and eye irritation were conducted. Results showed that the as-prepared disinfectant did not negatively affect tested animals during these safety investigations.

Evaluation of the EtOAc Extract of Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) as a Potential Skincare Cosmetic Material for Acne Vulgaris

  • This study evaluated the biological properties of lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) extracts. The EtOAc extract of lemongrass had DPPH, TEAC, and nitric oxide-scavenging activity assay results of 58.06, 44.14, and 41.08% at the concentration of 50, 10, and 50 ㎍/ml, respectively. The EtOAc extract had higher elastase and collagenase inhibitory activities than the 80% MeOH, n-hexane, BuOH, and water extracts and comparable whitening activity toward monophenolase or diphenolase. Also, the EtOAc fraction had higher lipase inhibitory and antimicrobial activities against Cutibacterium acnes among extracts which is known to an important contributor to the progression of inflammatory acne vulgaris, and an opportunistic pathogen present in human skin. Total phenolic and flavonoid concentrations in the EtOAc extract were 132.31 mg CAE/g extract and 104.50 mg NE/g extract, respectively. Biologically active compounds in lemongrass extracts were analyzed by LC-MS. This study confirms that lemongrass extracts have potential use as cosmetic skincare ingredients. Thus, lemongrass can be considered a promising natural source of readily available, low-cost extracts rich in antioxidant, skincare, and antimicrobial compounds that might be suitable for replacing synthetic compounds in the cosmeceutical industry.

Treatment Planning Guideline of EBT Film-based Delivery Quality Assurance Using Statistical Process Control in Helical Tomotherapy (토모테라피에서 통계적공정관리를 이용한 EBT 필름 기반의 선량품질보증의 치료계획 가이드라인)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the results from statistical process control (SPC) to recommend upper and lower control limits for planning parameters based on delivery quality assurance (DQA) results and establish our institutional guidelines regarding planning parameters for helical tomotherapy (HT). A total of 53 brain, 41 head and neck (H & N), and 51 pelvis cases who had passing or failing DQA measurements were selected. The absolute point dose difference (DD) and the global gamma passing rate (GPR) for all patients were analyzed. Control charts were used to evaluate upper and lower control limits (UCL and LCL) for all assessed treatment planning parameters. Treatment planning parameters were analyzed to provide its range for DQA pass cases. We confirmed that the probability of DQA failure was higher when the proportion of leaf open time (LOT) below 100 ms was greater than 30%. LOT and gantry period (GP) were significant predictor for DQA failure using the SPC method. We investigated the availability of the SPC statistic method to establish the local planning guideline based on DQA results for HT system. The guideline of each planning parameter in HT may assist in the prediction of DQA failure using the SPC statistic method in the future.
