  • Crystallographic and magnetic properties of ;$LaFe_{1-x}Ga_xO_3$($\chi$= 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7) were studied using XRD and Mossbauer spectroscopy. The crystal structures were found to be orthorhombic and the lattice parameters $\alpha$, b, and c were found to decrease with increasing Ga substitution. M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectra were obtained at various absorber temperatures ranging from 20 K to 750 K. The M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectra were all sextets below $T_N$ and were all singlets above $T_N$. Asymmetric broadening of the M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectral lines at 20 K was explained by the multitude of possible environments for an iron nucleus. As the temperature increases to $T_N$, a systematic line broadening in M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectra was observed and interpreted to originate from different temperature dependencies of the magnetic hyperfine fields at various iron sites.

  • M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer and Raman spectrum studies have been carried out on the 2b-site Fe ion in the Ba-ferrite (M-type). The thermal dynamics of Fe ion was analyzed by M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectra at different angles between the $\gamma$-ray direction and c-axis. The vibration on the 2b-site was more active compare to other direction and had very strong intensity in the Raman spectrum.

  • The crystallographic and magnetic properties of gallium-substituted cobalt ferrite ($CoGa_xFe_{2-x}O_4$) were investigated. The new material was synthesized using conventional ceramic methods, with gallium substituted for ferrite in the range of x = 0.0 to 1.0, in steps of 0.2. X-ray diffraction and M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy were used to confirm the presence of crystallized particles in the $CoGa_xFe_{2-x}O_4$ ferrite powders. All of the samples exhibited a single phase with a spinel structure, and the lattice parameters decreased as the gallium content increased. The particle size of the samples also decreased as gallium increased. For $x{\leq}0.4$, the M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectra of $CoGa_xFe_{2-x}O_4$ could be fitted with two Zeeman sextets, which are the typical spinel ferrite spectra of $Fe^{3+}$ with A- and B-sites. However, for $x{\geq}0.6$, the M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectra could be fitted with two Zeeman sextets and one doublet. The variation in the M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer parameters and the absorption area ratio indicated a cation distribution of $(Co_{0.2-0.2x}Ga_xFe_{0.8-0.6x})[Co_{0.8+0.2x}Fe_{1.2-0.4x}]O_4$, and the magnetic behavior of the samples suggested that the increase in gallium content led to a decrease in the saturation magnetization and in the coercivity.

  • To determine whether there is an ionic substitution of Ni, Co, Mn, and Al for Fe in synthetic goethites these materials have been studied by M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy at various temperatures ranging from 77 to 400 K. It is found that the presence of substituting elements in magnetically ordered structure of crystals may change the shape of M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectra of these caterials. The approximate distribution function of the effective magnetic field in the Fe nucleus p(Hn) is obtained from the M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectra. It is noted that the mean value of p(Hn) and its integral width can be taken as a measure of substitution in goethites.

  • Magnetic properties of basic rocks samples distributed in the seaside area of Ulleung island were investigated by means of X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy and SQUID magnetometer. We found that samples were typical basic rock which had the total amount of iron compounds varies from 10.6 wt% to 14.5 wt% depending on the different regions by XRF. The M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectra and magnetic hysteresis behaviors of the samples show ferromagnetic properties due to hematite. Also, temperature dependences of magnetization at applied magnetic field of 1 T for samples show magnetic transitions at 41 K~60 K.

  • Fe compounds of volcanic basalt samples distributed at the Hantan riverside in Cheorwon were investigated by means of X-ray diffractometry (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) and $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectroscopy. We found that samples were typical basic rock which consisted of augite, anorthite, albite and sanidine etc. They had the total amount of iron compounds including hematite (${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$) varies from 6.20 w% to 12.8 w% depending on the different regions by XRF. The $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectra of the samples were consisted of three doublets. The balance state of Fe ions of all samples were chiefly $Fe^{2+}$, and $Fe^{2+}/Fe^{3+}$ ratios were 2.27~3.42.

  • Slowly cooled $Cu_xFe_{3-x}O_4$ ($\chi$=0.1, 0.2) have been investigated over a temperature range from 82 to 700 K using the M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer technique. X-ray diffraction shows that these have a single-phase cubic spinel structure of lattice parameters $\alpha$=8.396 and 8.398${\AA}$, respectively. Since Cu ions prefer B (octahedral) sites to A (tetrahedral) sites, the ionic distribution is $(Fe)_A[Fe_{2-x}Cu_x]_BO_4$. M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectra consisted of two sets of 6-line pattern from. A site in ferric state and B site in ferrous-ferric state. Intensity ratio of B to A subspectra is 1.0 at 82 K and increases to 2.0 at 700 K with increasing temperature. After annealing the samples under vacuum at $450^circ{C}$ for a half hour, x-ray diffraction patterns have the peaks of magnetite- and hematite-phase. Lattice constants of magnetite-phase are 8.395 and 8.392 ${\AA}$ smaller than 8.396 and 8.398 ${\AA}$ before annealing, respectively. M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectra reveal the conventional magnetite pattern with the additional hematite pattern. Intensity ratios of B to A subspectra fur magnetite-phase become 1.9-2.0 over all temperature ranges and Cu ions are distributed over A and B sites randomly. Ratios of hematite to total intensity in M$\ddot{o}$ssbauer spectra for $\chi$= 0.1 and $\chi$= 0.2 are 10 and 21%, respectively. These hematite ratios may be due to annealing under vacuum at $450^circ{C}$, which transforms $Cu^{2+}$ ionic states into $Cu^{1+}$. Verwey temperatures far $\chi$= 0.1 and $\chi$= 0.2 are $123\pm2$ K and $128\pm2$ K.

  • The Mn-substituted M-type Ba-ferrite ($BaFe_{12-x}Mn_xO_{19}$; x = 0, 2, 4, 6) powders were prepared by the HTTD (High Temperature Thermal Decomposition) method. The effect of $Mn^{3+}$ Jahn-Teller ions on the magnetic properties has been studied by x-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometry, and $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectroscopy. With increasing Mn substitution, the lattice parameter $a_0$ increases while $c_0$ decreases. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy constants ($K_1$) were determined as 2.9, 2.2, 1.8, and, $1.3{\times}10^6\;erg/cm^3$ for x = 0, 2, 4, and 6, respectively, by the LAS method. We have studied the change of cation distribution by $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectroscopy which is closely related to $K_1$.

  • Fe compounds in scoria as distributed in the south-western area of Jeju Island were investigated using X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, and $^{57}Fe$ $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectroscopy. The samples were prepared from four parasite volcanoes. It was found that these samples are typical basalt comprised of $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, Fe, and silicate minerals. The $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectra showed doublets for olivine, pyroxene, and ilmenite as well as sextets for hematite and magnetite. The valence state of Fe is chiefly a 3+ charge state with a slight 2+ charge state. It is expected that these results will add to the body of information related to the formation mechanisms of Jeju Island.

  • Cobalt-, zinc-, and nickel-zinc-substituted nano-size manganese ferrite powders, $MnFe_2O_4$, $Mn_{0.8}Co_{0.2}Fe_2O_4$, $Mn_{0.8}Zn_{0.2}Fe_2O_4$ and $Mn_{0.8}Ni_{0.1}Zn_{0.1}Fe_2O_4$, were fabricated using a sol-gel method, and their crystallographic and magnetic properties were subsequently studied. The $MnFe_2O_4$ ferrite powder annealed at temperatures above 523 K exhibited a spinel structure, and the particle size increased as the annealing temperature increased. All ferrites annealed at 773 K showed a single spinel structure, and the lattice constants and particle size decreased with the substitution of Co, Zn, and Ni-Zn. The $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectrum of the $MnFe_2O_4$ ferrite powder annealed at 523 K only showed a doublet due to its superparamagnetic phase, and the $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectra of the $MnFe_2O_4$, $Mn_{0.8}Co_{0.2}Fe_2O_4$, and $Mn_{0.8}Zn_{0.2}Fe_2O_4$ ferrite powders annealed at 773 K could be fitted as the superposition of two Zeeman sextets due to the tetrahedral and octahedral sites of the $Fe^{3+}$ ions. However, the $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectrum of the $Mn_{0.8}Ni_{0.1}Zn_{0.1}Fe_2O_4$ ferrite powder annealed at 773 K consisted of two Zeeman sextets and one quadrupole doublet due to its ferrimagnetic and paramagnetic behavior. The area ratio of the $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectra could be used to determine the cation distribution equation, and we also explained the variation in the $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ parameters by using this cation distribution equation, the superexchange interaction and the particle size. Relative to pure $MnFe_2O_4$, the saturation magnetizations and coercivities were larger in $Mn_{0.8}Co_{0.2}Fe_2O_4$ and smaller in $Mn_{0.8}Zn_{0.2}Fe_2O_4$, and $Mn_{0.8}Ni_{0.1}Zn_{0.1}Fe_2O_4$. These variations could be explained using the site distribution equations, particle sizes and magnetic moments of the substituted ions.
