Development of an Electric Field Sensor using Reflective Interference Type Optical Modulator (반사간섭형 광변조기를 이용한 전계 계측센서의 개발)

  • A reflective interference type optical modulator to compose the electric field sensor is proposed, and the performance and characteristics are theoretically analyzed. For the high sensitivity of the sensor, a method to improve the modulation index of the modulator is presented. The electric field sensor using $Ti:LiNbO_3$ waveguide was fabricated and qualitatively investigated the characteristics by measuring the low frequency electric field. Even though the sensor showed very low modulation index of 5%, the electric filed strength of 5 V/cm was measured. The experimental results revealed the utilities of this type electric field sensor.

  • 광도파로는 변조기, 스위치, 필터, 센서, 파장변환기 등 많은 분야에 응용이 되고 있다. 이러한 광도파로의 손실측정방법에는 프리즘 커플러를 이용하는 방법, fabry-perot 구조의 물질이 갖는 pyroelectric effect를 이용한 방법, 도파로의 입출력 단에 fiber를 커플링하여 측정하는 방법 등을 들 수 있다. 그러나, 프리즘 커플러를 이용한 방법은 미세패턴의 도파로 측정이 어렵고, pyroelectric effect를 이용하는 방법은 특정한 방향으로 도파되는 광의 측정이 불가능하며, 마지막으로 fiber 커플링 방법은 항상 같은 조건하에서의 손실 측정이 어려운 단점이 있다.   • An optical switch/modulator is designed and the light propagating characteristics is analyzed by the simplified BPM. The distinctive feature of the switch/modulator is that all the waveguide branches are designed to be single-mode. Principle of the device is based on the coupled mode theory in the Y-junction interconnecting waveguide. In spite of all the waveguides are designed to be single-mode, adjusting the interconnecting waveguide length of the device, the same characteristics as existing device up to date is obtainable. Numerical results show that the switching characteristics periodically depends on the interconnecting waveguide length with a spatial of about 150${\mu}m$ in the Ti:LiNbO3 step index waveguide. The concept of design would be utilized effectively in fabricating the monolithic high density of optical integrated circuit.

  • A application possibility of photoresist flexible film for optical waveguide is proposed and described. The optical waveguide dimensions that is consists of Mach-zehnder interferometric and single channel waveguide based on the single-mode conditions in LiNbO$_3$ device was utilized and fabricated by wet etching technique. This Polymer material for core layer is SU-8/5O(Microchem.) and its refractive index from prism couping method was measured about 1.59 thickness about 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ at wavelength 0.6328${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. From the results, this work can show the possibility of fabricating a flexible optical waveguide in the field of integrated optics.

  • A directional coupler which on the X-cut $LiNbO_3$ substrate is fabricated by using proton exchange method and self-aligned method. After proton exchange process, the waveguide is formed by annealing process. The relation ship between refractive index change of waveguide and maximum output was studied along with the annealing time. A self-aligned method was used to simplify the fabrication process of the waveguide and to maximize the efficiency of electric field. The on-off state of modulator has been observered with the switching of the directional coupler by the electric field effect and also the switching voltage of the directional coupler has been measured with 8.0 [V].

The generation of dark spatial soliton in photorefractive photovoltaic medium (광굴절 광기전력 물질에서의 어두운 공간솔리톤 발생)

  • We investigate the generation of the dark spatial soliton and its role of wave guiding in Fe doped$LiNbO_3$ A cw Ar+ laser of 488 nm is used for the generation of the dark spatial soliton. The generation of the dark spatial soliton is observed even at the laser intensity as low as 10 mW/cm2. The self-defocusing effect is observed when the direction of the intensity variation is parallel to the optic axis, while it can't be seen when perpendicular to the axis. So, it is verified that the refractive index change is generated parallel to the optic axis. When 633 nm He-Ne laser beam is injected into the dark spatial soliton, the beam propagates just as in the diffraction free medium. So, it is verified that the dark spatial soliton can act as a waveguide.eguide.

  • An optical modulator with CPW(coplanar waveguide) electode on Ti:LiNbO$_{3}$ optical waveguide wasfabricated and characterized. The electrical-optical bandwidth measurement showed an optical response of -3dBat 10 GHzand S$_{11}$ lessthan -10dB upto 20GHz. The typeical specifications are : 5.6V of driving voltage, 4.2dB of insertion loss and 30dB of on/off extinction. The eye pattern proved that the optical meduator, fabricated in this work, has properties good enough for application.

  • A waveguide of coupled optical modulator was fabricated on LiNbO$_3$ based on proton exchange with self-aligned thin film electrode method. The electrode pattern was designed using a self-aligned method. After proton exchange process, the waveguide was prepared by annealing process. The initial crossover state of the fabricated 2$\times$2 coupled optical modulator was observed with controlling the annealing process variables and the structure of self-aligned thin film electrodes. It was shown form the present work that the measured crosstalk is -29.5[dB] and 8.0[V] of detected modulating voltage.

Single-photon Detection at 1.5 ㎛ Telecommunication Wavelengths Using a Frequency up-conversion Detector (주파수 상향변환 검출기를 이용한 1.5 ㎛ 통신파장대역의 단일광자 측정)

  • We present a low jitter frequency up-conversion detector based on quasi-phase matched sum frequency generation in a periodically poled $LiNbO_3$ waveguide for efficient single-photon detection at 1.5 ${\mu}m$ telecommunication wavelengths. The maximum detection efficiency and the noise count rate using the pump power of 300 mW and the pump wavelength of 974 nm are about 7% and 480 kHz, respectively. We also characterize the timing jitter of the frequency up-conversion detector by analyzing the time distribution of the detection outputs for photons generated through a picosecond pump pulsed spontaneous parametric downconversion. The minimum timing jitter was measured to be about 39.1 ps. Coincidence measurement with a narrow time window for pulsed up-conversion photons can eliminate the unwanted noise counts and maximize signal to noise ratio.

  • In this study, a single optical modulator which is fabricated on X-cut $LiNbO_3$ substrate by using proton exchange method is described. It is well-known that the proton exchange method is characterized by index change of the single optical modulator. As a results, it is found that the single optical waveguide varied widely with controlling diffusion process. The diffusion process was used to optimize the fabrication of the single optical modulator. On the other hand, the process was used to provide another performance improvement and it reduced the fabrication process.
