This paper deals with the recent development of high-voltage cathode materials of mono- and di- metal ions substituted spinel $LiMn_2O_4$ for lithium batteries. $LiCu_xMn_{2-x}O_4(0{\leq}x{\leq}0.5)$ shows reversible intercalation/deintercalation in two potential regions, $3.9\~43\;and\;4.8-5.0V$ and stable electrochemical cycling behavior but with low capacity. $LiNi_{0.5}Mn_{1.5}O_4$ obtained by a sol-gel process delivers a capacity of 127mAh $g^{-1}$ on the first cycle and sustains a value of 124 mAh $g^{-1}$ even after the 60th cycle. The $Li_xCr_yMn_{2-y}O_4(0{\leq}x{\leq}0.5)$ solid-solutions exhibit enhanced specific capacity, larger average voltage, and improved cycling behaviors for low Cr content. $LiCr_yMn_{2-y}O_4$ presents a reversible Li deintercalation process at 4.9V, whose capacity is proportional to the Cr content in the range of $0.25{\leq}x{\leq}0.5$ and delivers higher capacities. $LiM_yCr_{0.5-y}Mn_{1.5}O_4(M=Fe\;or\;Al)$ shows that the capacity retention is lowered compared with lithium manganate. The cumulative capacities obtainable with Al-substitutted materials are less than those with Fe-substituted materials. $LiCr_xNi_{0.5-x}Mn_{1.5}O_4(x=0.1)$ delivers a high initial capacity of 1$152mAh\;g^{-1}$ with excellent cycleability.
LiMn$_2$O$_4$ compounds were synthesized by calcining a mixture of LiOH and MnO$_2$(CMD) at 47$0^{\circ}C$ for 10 h and then calcining again at $650^{\circ}C$ to 90$0^{\circ}C$ fur 48 h in air with intermediate grinding. All the synthesized samples exhibited XRD patterns for the cubic spinel phase with a space group Fd3m. The lattice parameter increased gradually as the sintering temperature rose. The electrochemical cells were charged and discharged fur 20 cycles at a current density 300$\mu$A/$\textrm{cm}^2$ between 3.5 V and 4.3 V. The voltage vs. discharge capacity curves for all the samples showed two plateaus. The LiMn$_2$O$_4$ sample calcined at 90$0^{\circ}C$ had the largest first discharge capacity. This sample exhibited the best crystallinity, had relatively large lattice parameter and had relatively large particles with rectatively homogeneous size. All the samples showed good cycling performances. Among all the samples, the LiMn$_2$O$_4$ calcined at 85$0^{\circ}C$ had relatively large first discharge capacity and very good cycling performance. The addition of excess LiOH and the mixing in ethanol considered to help the formation of the more LiMn$_2$O$_4$ phase per unit weight sample and the more stable LiMn$_2$O$_4$phase. These led to the larger discharge capacities and the better cycling performances. The cyclic voltammograms fur the second cycle of the LiMn$_2$O$_4$ samples showed the oxidation and reduction peaks around 4.05 V and 4.18 V and around 4.08 V and 3.94 V, respectively. The larger first discharge capacity of the sample calcined at the higher temperature is related to the larger lattice parameter.

All solid-state thin film lithium batteries have many applications in miniaturized devices because of lightweight, long-life, low self-discharge and high energy density. The research of cathode materials for thin film lithium batteries that provide high energy density at fast discharge rates is important to meet the demands for high-power applications. Among cathode materials, lithium manganese oxide materials as spinel-based compounds have been reported to possess specific advantages of high electrochemical potential, high abundant, low cost, and low toxicity. However, the lithium manganese oxide has problem of capacity fade which caused by dissolution of Mn ions during intercalation reaction and phase instability. For this problem, many studies on effect of various transition metals have been reported. In the preliminary study, the Sn-substituted LiMn2O4 thin films prepared by pulsed laser deposition have shown the improvement in discharge capacity and cycleability. In this study, the thin films of LiMn2O4 and LiSn0.0125Mn1.975O4 prepared by RF magnetron sputtering were studied with effect of deposition parameters on the phase, surface morphology and electrochemical property. And, all solid-state thin film batteries comprised of a lithium anode, lithium phosphorus oxy-nitride (LiPON) solid electrolyte and LiMn2O4-based cathode were fabricated, and the electrochemical property was investigated.
The cathode material, $LiNi_{0.5}Mn_{1.5}O_4$, for high voltage applications of Li-ion batteries exhibits impurity phases due to oxygen deficiency during the high temperature heat treatment. The impurity phase reduces the electrochemical properties of the electrode since the deficiency spinel structure disturbs the lithium ion intercalation and deintercalation. In this study, Cr-substituted $LiNi_{0.5-x}Mn_{1.5}Cr_xO_4(0{\leq}x{\leq}0.05)$ powders are synthesized by a sol-gel method in order to reduce the amount of the impurity phases in the $LiNi_{0.5-x}Mn_{1.5}Cr_xO_4$. Thermal analysis of the cathode material shows that the $LiNi_{0.5}Mn_{1.5}O_4$ without Cr substitution looses $2\%$ of its weight due to oxygen deficiency but the amount of weight loss is diminished when Cr is substituted. XRD analysis also supports the reduction of the impurity phases in the cathode after chromium substitution, suggesting that the improvement of the electrochemical properties such as the capacity retention and electrochemical stability are attributed to the low content of impurity phases in the Cr-substituted $LiNi_{0.5-x}Mn_{1.5}Cr_xO_4.$

Electrochemical properties of LiMn2O4 cathode were investigated in three types of Zn-containing electrolytes: lithium-zinc sulfate electrolyte (1M ZnSO4 / 2M Li2SO4), zinc sulfate electrolyte (2MZnSO4) and lithium-zinc-manganese sulfate electrolyte (1MZnSO4 / 2MLi2SO4 / 0.1MMnSO4). Cyclic voltammetry measurements demonstrated that LiMn2O4 is electrochemically inactive in pure ZnSO4 electrolyte after initial oxidation. The effect of manganese (II) additive in the zinc-manganese sulfate electrolyte on the electrochemical performance was analyzed. The initial capacity of LiMn2O4 is higher in presence of MnSO4 (140 mAh g-1 in 1 M ZnSO4 / 2 M Li2SO4 / 0.1 M MnSO4 and 120 mAh g-1 in 1 M ZnSO4 / 2MLi2SO4). The capacity increase can be explained by the electrodeposition of MnOx layer on the electrode surface. Structural characterization of postmortem electrodes with use of XRD and EDX analysis confirmed that partially formed in pure ZnSO4 electrolyte Zn-containing phase leads to fast capacity fading which is probably related to blocked electroactive sites.

We have investigated the L $i_{1+x}$M $n_2$$O_4$system as a cathode material for lithium rechargeable batteries. To improve the cycle performance of spinel LiM $n_2$$O_4$ as the cathode of 4V class lithium secondary batteries, spinel phase L $i_{1+x}$M $n_2$$O_4$(x=0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.075) was prepared at 75$0^{\circ}C$ for 48h. The preparation of L $i_{1+x}$M $n_2$$O_4$ from L $i_2$$O_3$ and Mn $O_2$ under air is studied. The compounds were synthesized by using solid-state reaction. Structural refinements were carried out with a Rietveld-refinement program. Electrochemical properties were examined using the Li/L $i_{1+x}$M $n_2$$O_4$ cells. The capacity of L $i_{1+x}$M $n_2$$O_4$ decreases with increases lithium content, while the cycle life improves. The initial discharge capacity are 118mAh/g and 116mAh/g for LiM $n_2$$O_4$ decreases with increases lithium content, while the cycle life improves. The initial discharge capacity are 118mAh/g and 116mAh/g for LiM $n_2$$O_4$ and L $i_{1.025}$M $n_2$$O_4$, respectively.pectively.
In order to investigate the effects of particle size and specific surface area(BET area) of spinel powder, $LiMn_2O_4$ were synthesized using metal oxide precursor by co-precipitation method(CoP) and solid state reaction (SSR) .X-ray diffraction(XRD) patterns revealed that the both prepared powder has a well developed spinel structure with Fd3m space group. The $LiMn_2O_4$ prepared by co-precipitation showed spherical morphology with narrow size distribution. However, the $LiMn_2O_4$ prepared by solid state reaction showed relatively smaller particles with irregular shape. The measured BET areas of the powers are $0.8m^2g^{-1}$ (CoP) and $3.6m^2g^{-1}$(SSR). The electrochemical performance of the Prepared $LiMn_2O_4$ powders was evaluated using coin type cells(CR2032) at elevated temperature ($55^{\circ}C$). The $LiMn_2O_4$ prepared by co-precipitation showed the better cycling performance(82.3%capacity retention at $50^{th}$ cycle) than that of the $LiMn_2O_4$(68.3%) prepared by solid state reaction at elevated temperature.

Li(Ni, Co, Mn)$O_2$ has been known as one of the most promising cathode materials for lithium secondary batteries. However, it has some problems to overcome for commercialization such as inferior rate capability and unstable thermal stability. In order to address these problems, surface modification of cathode materials by coating has been investigated. In the coating techniques, selection of coating material is a key factor of obtaining enhanced properties of cathode materials. In this work, we introduced solid electrolyte (Li-La-Ti-O) as a coating material on the surface of $Li[Ni_{0.3}Co_{0.4}Mn_{0.3}]O_2$ cathode. Specially, we focused on a rate performance of Li-La-Ti-O coated $Li[Ni_{0.3}Co_{0.4}Mn_{0.3}]O_2$ cathode. Both bare and Li-La-Ti-O 2 wt.% coated sample showed similar discharge capacity at 0.5C rate. However, as the increase of charge-discharge rate to 3C, the coated samples displayed better discharge capacity and cyclic performance than those of bare sample.
The Mn4+-activated Li2ZnSn2O6 (LZSO:Mn4+) red phosphors were synthesized by the solid-state reaction at temperatures of 1100-1400 ℃ in air. The synthesized LZSO:Mn4+ phosphors were confirmed to have a single hexagonal LZSO phase without the presence of any secondary phase formed by the Mn4+ addition. With near UV and blue excitation, the LZSO:Mn4+ phosphors exhibited a double band deep-red emission peaked at ~658 nm and ~673 nm due to the 2E → 4A2 transition of Mn4+ ion. PL emission intensity showed a strong dependence on the Mn4+ doping concentration and the 0.3 mol% Mn4+-doped LZSO phosphor produced the strongest PL emission intensity. Photoluminescence emission intensity was also found to be dependent on the calcination temperature and the optimal calcination temperature for the LZSO:Mn4+ phosphors was determined to be 1200 ℃. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and field-effect scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) analysis revealed that the 0.3 mol% Mn4+-doped LZSO phosphor particles have an irregularly round shape and an average particle size of ~1.46 ㎛.
