Energy transfer and photon avalanche in Tm3+:LaF3

  • Single pulse laser excitation at 656 nm and successive pulse excitation at 635.2 and 648.4 nm produced blue emission at 480 nm by two-step upconversion process in Tm/sup 3+/:LaF/sub 3/. The excited-state absorption cross-section of the /sup 3/F/sub 4/ to /sup 1/G/sub 4/ transition was estimated by a looping mechanism with cross-relaxation processes. The dynamics of up-conversion andthe possibility of the photon avalanche by a pulse laser excitation were studied by numerical simulation with the rate equation model.

  • As operating temperatures of engines or turbines continually increase for higher efficiency, significant amounts of researches have been focused on finding new materials, which would be alternatives to conventional yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) for thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). In this study, phase evolution and thermo-physical properties of $La_2(Zr_{1-x}Hf_x)_2O_7$ pyrochlore systems are investigated for TBC applications. $La_2(Zr_{1-x}Hf_x)_2O_7$ systems are comprised by selecting $La^{3+}$ as A-site ions and $Zr^{4+}/Hf^{4+}$ as B-site ions in $A_2B_2O_7$ pyrochlore structures. For the developed phases in $La_2(Zr_{1-x}Hf_x)_2O_7$ compositions, thermo-physical properties such as thermal conductivity, thermal expansion coefficient are examined. The potential of these $La_2(Zr_{1-x}Hf_x)_2O_7$ compositions for TBC application is also discussed.

졸-겔법에 의해 합성된 Li4/3Ti5/3O4의 전기화학적 특성 (The Electrochemical Properties of Li4/3Ti5/3O4 Synthesized by Sol-Gel Process)

  • 초격자 구조의 $Li_{4/3}Ti_{5/3}O_4$를 lithium acetate (LA)와 titanium n-butoxide (TNB)의 혼합 용액을 이용한 졸겔법으로 합성하였다. 이때 얻어진 겔상은 TNB/LA 몰비 5/4에 AA/TNB의 몰비 0.125를 혼합한 clear sol 용액에 $NH_4OH/TNB$ 몰비 0.35와 $H_2O/TNH$ 몰비 3.5를 첨가하여 얻었으며, $Li_{4/3}Ti_{5/3}O_4$는 xerogel을 $600^{\circ}C$에서 30시간 동안 열처리하여 제조하였다. 그리고 합성된 $Li_{4/3}Ti_{5/3}O_4$는 0.5~3.0 V의 전위 영역에서 $0.15mA/cm^2$의 전류밀도로 Li/1M $LiClO_4(in\;PC)/Li_{4/3}Ti_{5/3}O_4$를 구성하여 실험한 결과 174 mAh/g의 초기 용량을 나타냈으며, 25 cycle 동안 27.3%의 용량 감소를 나타냈다.

페로브스카이트 촉매에 의한 액화수소의 올소-파라 수소변환특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Ortho-para Hydrogen Conversion Characteristics of Liquefied Hydrogen by Perovskite Catalysts)

  • During the liquefaction of hydrogen, the ortho hydrogen is converted into the para form with heat release that evaporates the liquefied hydrogen into the gaseous one backwards. The ortho-para conversion catalysts are usually used during liquefaction to avoid such boil-off. In order to compare and analyze the performance of the ortho-para hydrogen conversion catalysts, in-situ FT-IR device was designed and manufactured to measure the para hydrogen conversion rate in real-time. $LaFeO_3$ and $La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}Cu_{0.3}Fe_{0.7}O_3$ perovskite catalysts were prepared by the citrate sol-gel method and their spin conversion characteristics from ortho to para hydrogen were investigated by in-situ FTIR spectroscopy at 17K. It was found that the spin conversion was affected by surface area, particle size, and crystallite size of the catalysts. Thus, the $La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}Cu_{0.3}Fe_{0.7}O_3$ perovskite catalyst that had higher surface area, higher crystallite size, and smaller particle size than $LaFeO_3$ showed the better spin conversion property of 32.3% at 17K in 120min interaction with the perovskite catalysts.

Preparation of a Li7La3Zr1.5Nb0.5O12 Garnet Solid Electrolyte Ceramic by using Sol-gel Powder Synthesis and Hot Pressing and Its Characterization

  • In this study, we prepared and characterized Nb-doped $Li_7La_3Zr_{2-x}O_{12}$ (LLZNO) powder and pellets with a cubic garnet structure by using a modified sol-gel synthesis and hot pressing. LLZNO powder with a very small grain size and cubic structure without secondary phases could be obtained by using a synthesis method in which Li and La sources in a propanol solvent were mixed together with Zr and Nb sources in 2-methoxy ethanol. A pure cubic phase LLZNO pellet could be fabricated from the prepared LLZNO and an additional 6-wt% of $Li_2CO_3$ powder by hot pressing at $1050^{\circ}C$ and 15.8 MPa. The hot-pressed LLZNO pellet with a relative density of 99% exhibited a very dense surface morphology. The total Li ionic conductivity of the hot-pressed LLZNO was $7.4{\times}10^{-4}S/cm$ at room temperature, which is very high level compared to other reported values. The activation energy for ionic conduction was estimated to be 0.40 eV.
