  • $FeS_2$ has been widely used for cathode materials in thermal battery because of its high stability and current capability at high operation temperature. Salts such as a LiCl-KCl were added as a binder for improving electrical performance and formability of $FeS_2$ cathode powder. In this study, the effects of the addition of $Li_2O$ in LiCl-KCl binder on the formability of $FeS_2$ powder compact were investigated. With the increasing amount of $Li_2O$ addition to LiCl-KCl binder salts, the strength of the pressed compacts increased considerably when the powder mixture were pre-heat-treated above $350^{\circ}C$. The heat-treatment resulted in promoting the coating coverage of $FeS_2$ particles by the salts as $Li_2O$ was added. The observed coating as $Li_2O$ addition might be attributed to the enhanced wettability of the salt rather than its reduced melting temperature. The high strength of compacts by the $Li_2O$ addition and pre-heat-treatment could improve the formability of $FeS_2$ raw materials.

  • A highly selective, sensitive and reliable ozone sensing $In_2O_3$ thin film was fabricated by a sol-gel method. The fabricated film is operated at a relatively lower temperature than ever developed thin films and saved operating power. $In_2O_3$ films deposited by sol-gel technique has been recently attracted because it is an economical and energy saving method and precisely controlled microstructure. Indium alkoxide precursor was synthesized from the reaction between indium hydroxide and butanol. PVA binder was used to improve adhesion of the films. The $In_2O_3$ thin films were obtained by spin coating from 1 to 5 times followed by drying at $100^{\circ}C$ and calcining at $600^{\circ}C$ for 1h. The film thickness was controlled by the number of coating time. The morphology and the thickness of the $In_2O_3$ films were examined by a SEM and XRD. The $In_2O_3$ thin films show a high sensitive to ozone gas at operating temperature of $250^{\circ}C$. The $In_2O_3$ sensor has very good selectivity to $CH_4$, CO, $C_4H_{10}$ and ethanol.

  • Joining of NiO-YSZ to 316 stainless steel was carried out with B-Ni2 brazing alloy (3 wt% Fe, 4.5 wt% Si, 3.2 wt% B, 7 wt% Cr, Ni-balance, m.p. 971-$999^{\circ}C$) to seal the NiO-YSZ anode/316 stainless steel interconnect structure in a SOFC. In the present research, interfacial (chemical) reactions during brazing at the NiO-YSZ/316 stainless steel interconnect were enhanced by the two processing methods, a) addition of an electroless nickel plate to NiO-YSZ as a coating or b) deposition of titanium layer onto NiO-YSZ by magnetron plasma sputtering method, with process variables and procedures optimized during the pre-processing. Brazing was performed in a cold-wall vacuum furnace at $1080^{\circ}C$. Post-brazing interfacial morphologies between NiO-YSZ and 316 stainless steel were examined by SEM and EDS methods. The results indicate that B-Ni2 brazing filler alloy was fused fully during brazing and continuous interfacial layer formation depended on the method of pre-coating NiO-YSZ. The inter-diffusion of elements was promoted by titanium-deposition: the diffusion reaction thickness of the interfacial area was reduced to less than 5 ${\mu}m$ compared to 100 ${\mu}m$ for electroless nickel-deposited NiO-YSZ cermet.

  • The effect of substrate rotation speed on the phase forming behavior and microstructural variation of 8 wt% yttria ($Y_2O_3$) stabilized $ZrO_2$ (8YSZ) coatings as a thermal barrier coating has been investigated. 8YSZ coatings with $100{\sim}200{\mu}m$ thickness were deposited by electron beam-physical vapor deposition onto a super alloy (Ni-Cr-Co-Al) substrate with a bond coating (NiCo-CrAlY). The width of the columnar grains of the 8YSZ coatings increased with increasing substrate rotation speed from 1 to 30 rpm at a substrate temperature range of $900{\sim}950^{\circ}C$. In spite of the different growth behaviors of coatings with different substrate rotation speeds, the phases of each coating were not changed remarkably. Even after post heat treatments with various conditions of the coated specimens fabricated at 20 rpm, only a change of color was noticeable, without any remarkable change in the phase or microstructure.

  • The SnSe single crystal shows an outstanding figure of merit (ZT) of 2.6 at 973 K; thus, it is considered to be a promising thermoelectric material. However, the mass production of SnSe single crystals is difficult, and their mechanical properties are poor. Alternatively, we can use polycrystalline SnSe powder, which has better mechanical properties. In this study, surface modification by atomic layer deposition (ALD) is chosen to increase the ZT value of SnSe polycrystalline powder. SnSe powder is ground by a ball mill. An ALD coating process using a rotary-type reactor is adopted. ZnO thin films are grown by 100 ALD cycles using diethylzinc and H2O as precursors at 100℃. ALD is performed at rotation speeds of 30, 40, 50, and 60 rpm to examine the effects of rotation speed on the thin film characteristics. The physical and chemical properties of ALD-coated SnSe powders are characterized by scanning and tunneling electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The results reveal that a smooth oxygen-rich ZnO layer is grown on SnSe at a rotation speed of 30 rpm. This result can be applied for the uniform coating of a ZnO layer on various powder materials.

  • Currently, spray coating has attracted interest in the mass production of anode catalyst layers for proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). The solvent in the spray ink is a critical factor for the catalyst dispersion in ink, the microstructure of the catalyst layer, and the PEMWE performance. Herein, various pure organic solvents were examined as a substitute for conventional isopropanol-deionized water (IPA-DIW) mixture for ink solvent. Among the polar solvents that exhibited better IrO2 dispersion over nonpolar solvents, 2-butanol (2-BuOH) was selected as a suitable candidate. The PEMWE single cells were fabricated using 2-BuOH at various ionomer contents, spray nozzle types, and drying temperatures, and their performance was compared to the cells fabricated using a conventional IPA-DIW mixture. The PEMWE single cells with 2-BuOH solvent showed good performances comparable to the conventional IPA-DIW mixture case and highly durable performances under accelerated degradation tests.

  • This study is based on a coating method that provides utilization value as a micronised powder for cosmetic raw materials using natural minerals buried in Bonghwa, Gyeongsangbuk-do in Korea. The mineral powder name is called Buseok, and chemical name is pumice powder. The results of a study on the efficacy of cosmetics are reported by the development of particulate powder to assess the performance of this powder. First of all, in order to coat the surface of this powder with oil, aluminum hydroxide was coated on the particulate surface and then coated with alkylsilan. In addition, it was coated with vegetable oil to prevent condensation of the powder and increase the dispersion in the oil phase. First; the particle size of pumice powder was from 10 to 50mm having porous holes on the surface of the particles. Second; The components of this powder contained $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, $Fe_2O_3$, MgO, CaO, $K_2O_2$, $Na_2O$, $TiO_2$, $TiO_2$, MnO, $Cr_2O_3$, $V_2O_5$. Third: The particles of this powder have a planetary structure and are reddish-brown with porosity through SEM and TEM analysis. Fourth; the far-infrared radiation rate of this parabolic powder was $0.924{\mu}m$, and the radiative energy was $3.72{\times}102W/m^2$ and ${\mu}m$. In addition, the anion emission is 128 ION/cc, which shows that the coating remains unchanged. Based on these results, it is expected to be widely applied to basic cosmetics such as BB cream, cushion foundation, powderfect, and other color-coordinated cosmetics, sunblock cream, wash-off massage pack as an application of cosmetics. • This study was carried out to clarify the effect of sprout length, burried depth of seed and CaO$_2$ seed coating on emergence, seedling stand and early growth of rice in puddled-soil drill seeding at Junbuk in 1995. The cultivar tested was Dongjinbyeo(Japonica type). Although the longer sprouted seeds were caused the better seedling stand, 4mm sprout length of seeds appeared to be appropriate for good seedling stand and seeding uniformity, while 6mm sprouted seed resulted in ununiform seedling establishment. Rapid emergence and increased seedling stand were obtained by CaO$_2$ seed coating, which had effect more on soaked seed than on sprouted seed, but the seedling stand of sprouted seeds significantly reduced at deeper than 1cm seeding depth and also emergence rate of sprouted seeds significantly reduced at deeper than 2cm seeding depth.

  • An electrode was prepared by dip-coating NiFe2O4 powder on stainless steel (SUS) support for the application in the alkaline water electrolysis. The prepared electrode was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS), and was evaluated for the voltage properties with the change of current density in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrgen evolution reaction (HER) using 1, 3 and 7 M KOH solution. From the SEM and EDXS analysis, it was confirmed that the prepared electrode had NiFe2O4 on the SUS support. In OER and HER, the voltage in the 7 M KOH solution had a value of 1.35 and -1.90 V at 0.2 and -0.2 A/cm2 of the current density, respectively. It was considered that the prepared electrode could be use as an electrode in the alkaline water electrolysis from the experimental results.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of surface conditioning on the shear bond strength of zirconium-oxide ceramic to resin cement. A total of 120 disk-shaped zirconium-oxide ceramic blocks(3-TZP, Kyoritsu, Tokyo, Japan) were treated as follows: (1) no treatment; (2) sandblasting with 110 ${\mu}m$ aluminum-oxide(Al2O3); (3) particles tribochemical silica coating(RocatecTM, 3M ESPE). Then zirconium-oxide ceramic blocks were divided into six groups(10 for each group) and bonded with resin cement(Rely X U-200, 3M ESPE). (1) No treatment / No treatment (2) No treatment / Sandblasting with 110 ${\mu}m$ aluminum-oxide particles (3) No treatment / Silica coating (4) Sandblasting with 110 ${\mu}m$ aluminum-oxide particles / Sandblasting with 110 ${\mu}m$ aluminum-oxide particles (5) Sandblasting with 110 ${\mu}m$ aluminum-oxide particles / Silica coating (6) Silica coating / Silica coating. Each group was tested in shear bond strengths by UTM. Data analysis included one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA) and the Tukey Honestly Significant Difference test (P=0.05). Group that bonded two silica coated specimen showed a highest bond strength(P<0.05). Two silica coated surface conditioning group and air-abrasion and silica coated surface conditioning group showed significantly difference with other groups(P<0.05). Other groups had no significantly difference each other. Within the limitation of this study, Surface conditioning with Rocatec treatment to each side of specimen provided the highest bond strength.
