Temperature-dependent Structural and Magnetic Properties of Diamagnetic $HgI_2$

  • We examined the temperature-dependent structural and magnetic properties of HgI2 in the temperature range of 300~400 K. HgI2 is a diamagnetic material and can be used for X-ray or γ-ray detectors. DCmagnetization measurements on HgI2 showed that there is a small but distinguishable change in its diamagnetic properties near 375 K. The magnetic property change is not expected because Hg and I are known as nonmagnetic elements. X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements revealed a structural transition in the temperature of 350~400 K. Temperature-dependent x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) demonstrated that the chemical valence states of both Hg and I did not changed in the temperature range of 300~400 K. However, XAFS revealed that the bond-length disorder was slightly increased in the temperature range, particularly, near Hg atoms. The structural changes of HgI2 are likely related to its diamagnetic property change. We will discuss the relation between the diamagnetic properties and local structural properties of HgI2 in detail.

수은이 시험관내 사람 다형핵백혈구의 기능에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Mercuric Chloride (In Vitro) on the Function of Human Polylnorphonuclear Leukocytes(PMNs))

  • In the present study, the effect of $HgCl_2$on the function of human peripheral polymorphonuclear leukocytes(PMNs) was examined. PMNs were isolated from human peripheral blood with density centrifugation in Ficoll-Paque. The cells were then incubated with $0.5{\sim}5{\mu}M\;HgCl_2$and glass adherence, chemotactic activity and erythrocyte-antibody rosette forming activity were measured. $HgCl_2$ decreased the function of PMNs in all three aspects tested. $HgCl_2$significantly diminished glass adherence(40.5 {\mu}M: 92{\pm}12%$ (percentage of control, $mean{\pm}$ S.D.); 41 {\mu}M: 46{\pm}11%,$ P<0.01; $3{\mu}M: 35{\pm}7%,$P<0.01;$5{\mu}M:49{\pm}10%,$ P<0.01). Similarly, significant differences were observed in chemotactic activity after $HgCl_2$treatment compared with control (control: $0.95{\pm}0.14mm; 0.5 {\mu}M: 0.91{\pm}0.11 mm; 1 {\mu}M: 0.77{\pm}0.16mm, P<0.05; 3{\mu}M: 0.61{\pm} 0.06mm, P<0.01; 5{\mu}M: 0.15{\pm}0.03 mm, P<0.01).$ Also, 4HgCl_2$decreased the percentage of rosette-forming PMNs, indicating diminished phagocytic activity of PMNs upon $HgCl_2$ exposure compared with control (control: $58{\pm}4%; 1{\mu}M: 53{\pm}4%, p<0.05; 3{\mu}M: 49{\pm}3%, P<0.01; 5{\mu}M: 46{\pm}3%, P<0.01).$ Cell viability was not antered after $HgCl_2$treatment (483{\pm}5%$ viability in control PMNs versus $81{\pm}8%$ viability in $5{\mu}M$ Hg-treated PMNs), suggesting that the impaired PMN function after $HgCl_2$treatment was not due to nonspecific cytotoxicity induced by $HgCl_2$. $HgCl_2$-induced decrease in the function of PMNs may have some implications in depressed host susceptibilityupon bacterial challenge after mercury exposure.

PVT공정을 이용한 음향광학 가변 필터용 Hg2Br2 파우더의 고순도 정제 (High Purification of Hg2Br2 Powder for Acousto-Optic Tunable Filters Utilizing a PVT Process)

  • We develop a purification process of $Hg_2Br_2$ raw powders using a physical vapor transport(PVT) process, which is essential for the fabrication of a high performance acousto-optic tunable filter(AOTF) module. Specifically, we characterize and compare three $Hg_2Br_2$ powders: $Hg_2Br_2$ raw powder, $Hg_2Br_2$ powder purified under pumping conditions, and $Hg_2Br_2$ powder purified under vacuum sealing. Before and after purification, we characterize the powder samples through X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The corresponding results indicate that physical properties of the $Hg_2Br_2$ compound are not damaged even after the purification process. The impurities and concentration in the purified $Hg_2Br_2$ powder are evaluated by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy. Notably, compared to the sample purified under pumping conditions, the purification process under vacuum sealing results in a higher purity $Hg_2Br_2$ (99.999 %). In addition, when the second vacuum sealing purification process is performed, the remaining impurities are almost removed, giving rise to $Hg_2Br_2$ with ultra-high purity. This high purification process might be possible due to independent control of impurities and $Hg_2Br_2$ materials under the optimized vacuum sealing. Preparation of such a highly purified $Hg_2Br_2$ materials will pave a promising way toward a high-quality $Hg_2Br_2$ single crystal and then high performance AOTF modules.

일부 도시노인들의 고혈압증 유병률 (Prevalence of Hypertension Among the Aged in Urban Area)

  • 도시 노인들의 고혈압증의 빈도 및 분포를 파악하기 위하여 1986년 1월부터 동년 12월 사이에 대구시에 거주하는 노인 남자 565명, 여자 762명 총 1,327명에 대해 조사한 성적을 요약하면 다음과 같다. 수축기혈압의 평균치는 $134.2{\pm}24.78mmHg$로 남자 $136.0{\pm}25.01mmHg$, 여자 $133.0{\pm}24.56mmHg$였다. 이완기혈압의 평균치는 $83.0{\pm}14.43mmHg$로 남자 $83.7{\pm}14.41mmHg$, 여자 $82.4{\pm}14.43mmHg$였다. 세계보건기구의 기준에 따른 고혈압증 유병률에 있어 pure systolic hypertension (${\geq}160$/<95mmHg)인 자는 7.2%로 남자 7.8%, 여자 6.8%였다. Pure diastolic hypertension (<160/${\geq}95mmHg$)인 자는 4.8%로 남자 6.0%, 여자 3.9%였다. Both systolic and diastolic hypertension (${\geq}60/{\geq}95mmHg$)인 자는 12.9%로 남자 13.5%, 여자 12.9%였다. 합동위원회의 기준에 의하면 normal (/<90mmHg)인 자는 49.1%로 남자 46.7%, 여자 50.8%였다. Mild hypertension (/90-104mmHg)인 자는 34.6%로 남자 34.5%, 여자 34.6%였다. Moderate hypertension (/105-114mmHg)인 자는 3.6%로 남자 5.1%, 여자 2.5%였다. Severe hypertension ($/{\geq}115mmHg$)인 자는 2.7%로 남자 2.3%, 여자 3.0%였다. Boderline isolated systolic hypertension (140-159/<90mmHg)인 자는 7.6%로 남자 9.0%, 여자 6.6%였다. Isolated systolic hypertension (${\geq}160$/<90mmHg)인 자는 2.4%로 남자 2.3%, 여자 2.5%였다.

MERCURY-INDUCED ALTERATIONS OF CHLOROPHYLL a FLUORESCENCE KINETICS IN ISOLATED BARLEY (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. ALBORI) CHLOROPLASTS

  • Effects of HgCl$_2$-treatment on electron transport, chlorophyll a fluorescence and its quenching were studied using isolated barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Albori) chloroplasts. Depending on the concentration of HgCI$_2$, photosynthetic oxygen-evolving activities of photosystem II (PS II) were greatly inhibited, whereas those of photosystem I (PS I) were slightly decreased. The inhibitory effects of HgCl$_2$ on the oxygen-evolving activity was partially restored by the addition of hydroxyamine, suggesting the primary inhibition site by HgCl$_2$2-treatment is close to the oxidizing site of PS tl associated with water-splitting complex. Addition of 50 $\mu$M HgCI$_2$ decreased both photochemical and nonphotochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence. Especially, energy dependent quenching (qE) was completely disappeared by HgCl$_2$-treatment as observed by NH$_4$CI treatment. In the presence of HgCI$_2$, F'o level during illumination was also increased. These results suggest that pH gradient across thylakoid membrane can not be formed in the presence of 0 $\mu$M HgCl$_2$. In addition, antenna pigment composition might be altered by HgCl$_2$-treatment.

DBHQ-OPP foam에 의한 Hg(II)의 흡착과 분리 (On the Separation and Adsorption of Hg(II) by DBHQ-OPP Foam)

  • 수용액에 존재하는 중금속이온중의 Hg(II)을 정량적으로 분리 회수하기 위하여 DBHQ(5. 7-dibromo-8-hydroxyquinoline)을 Open-pore polyurethane foam (OPP foam)에 침윤시켜 수지의 응용성을 연구하였다. Hg(II)의 흡착은 DBHQ와 1:2 몰비의 착물형성이 이루어지며 Hg(II)의 흡착과 분리는 Batch법으로 실험하여 최적조건을 결정하였다. 가장 양호한 흡착은 DBHQ의 등전점인 pH5.0 부근에서 그리고 분리하는데는 4M-HCl, 50% 아세톤 용매를 사용하였을 경우가 비교적 정량적인 흡착과 분리가 이루어지는 조건이었으며 이와같은 결과를 기초로 DBHQ-OPP foam에 대한 Hg(II)의 흡착 및 분리에 대한 반응메카니즘을 제안했다.

  • 촉매로서 Hg$^{2+}$을 사용한 수화반응에서 cis-[Co(en)$_2$(OH$_2$)Cl]$^{2+}$, [Co(NH$_3$)$_5$Cl]$^{2+}$, cis-[Co(NH$_3$)$_4$(OH$_2$)Cl]$^{2+}$ 및 [Co(NH$_2$CH$_3$)$_5$Cl]$^{2+}$착물들은 Hg$^{2+}$의 농도가 증가할수록 관측속도상수(k$_{obs}$)의 값이 증가하였다. Hg$^{2+}$에 의한 수화반응의 속도법칙은 Rate = k$_2$K[complex][Hg$^{2+}$]이었고, 그 메카니즘이 연구되었다. 또한 여러가지 유기용매-물 혼합용매에서 Co(Ⅲ)착물의 Hg$^{2+}$에 의한 수화반응이 연구되었다. 용매의 성질인 Y (solvent ionizing power)값에 대한 log k를 도시하여 그 기울기인 m값을 얻었다. 그 m값으로부터 수화반응의 메카니즘을 추정하였다. 속도론적인 자료로부터 Hg$^{2+}$에 의한 Co(Ⅲ)착물의 수화반응이 I$_{d^-}$메카니즘으로 제안되었다. 각 Co(Ⅲ)착물의 속도의 차이는 여러가지 리간드가 배위된 Co(Ⅲ)착물의 리간드장파라메타(${\Delta}$)값과 관계가 있었다.

한국인 청년의 안압 측정 (A Study of the Intraocular Pressure of Korean Youth)

  • 한국인 청년 남, 여 1,027명(남자=475, 여자=552)을 대상으로 안압의 상대 빈도 분포를 조사하였다. 상대적 빈도의 최고값은 남, 여에서 각각 14.5mmHg와 17.5mmHg이었으며, 전체 안압 빈도 분포범위는 남, 여에서 각각 7~23mmHg와 7~22mmHg이었다. 그리고 누적 빈도 중앙값 (누적빈도=0.5)은 남, 여에서 각각 13.0~16.5mmHg와 16.5~18.5mmHg로 여자가 남자 보다 더 높았다. 평균 안압은 남, 여에서 각각 15.2mmHg와 15.8mmHg이었고 조사 대상의 98%가 정상 안압의 범위에 속했다. 안압은 일차 변동을 나타냈는데 아침에서 저녁으로 가면서 감소하는 추세를 보였다. 안압 변동의 추세선을 보면 운동에 의해 안압이 감소되었으며 넥타이를 맨 경우와 누워있는 자세를 유지하는 동안 안압은 추세적으로 증가되었다.

Distribution and Phytotoxicity of Mercury in Tomato Seedlings Exposed to Mercury

  • Thirty-day-old seedlings of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) were treated with different concentrations of HgCl$_2$(0. 10 and 50 $\mu$M) for up to 20 days. and the detailed distribution of Hg absorbed and its toxicity in different plant parts (roots, stems and leaves) were investigated. The accumulation of Hg in plants increased with external Hg concentrations. and Hg is strongly retained by roots. Further. Hg content in leaves was various. showing more accumulation in older leaves. Seedlings exposed to toxic levels of Hg showed not only the reduction of dry weight and length of both shoot and root. and chlorophyll levels in leaves but also the enhancement of malondialdehyde (a lipid peroxidation product) formation in all plant parts investigated. These results suggest that physiological impairment of a plant exposed to Hg may be achieved by internal distribution of Hg absorbed and Hg-induced oxidative stress in different plant parts.

세포막 물질수송계의 조절에 의한 유기수은의 세포독성 변화에 대한 연구 (Changes on the Methylmercury-induced Cytotoxicity by Control of Cell Membrane Transport System)

  • The aim of the current study was to evaluate the transport system in EMT-6 cell for the uptake of the methylmercury(MeHg). Several inhibitors ere used to test used to test which potential transport system might be involoved in MeHg uptake. Probenecid was used to test the organic transport system, valinomycin for testing the effect of the membrane potential, cytochalasin B for testing the facilitated diffusive D-glucose transport system and colchicine for testing the microtubule system. Ouabain for evaluating active transport system, 4',4-diisothiocyano-2',2-stilbenedisulfonic acid(DIDS) the Cl- ion transport system and verapamil for the $Ca^{2+}$ transprot system. Significantly, MeHg decreased the synthesis of nitric oxcide(NO) and intracellular ATP in ENT-6 cells. In the condition of ouabain containing with MeHg decreased the production of NO and intracelluar ATP. In the treatment of inhibitors, ouabain showed protective effect against cytotoxicity of MeHg but ather inhibitors not showed protective effects. The protective effects of ouabain against the cytotoxicity of MeHg deoended on the concentration of added ouabain to the culture medium for MET-6 cells. These result showed that the uptake of MeHg might be involved in the active transport system. Active transports system seems to share similarities with the transport systems for the uptake of MeHg when using MeHg and MeHg-glutathione complex.x.
