Steelers' Dust-catalyzed Oxidative Treatment of Landfill Leachate (제강분진을 이용한 매립지 침출수의 산화처리)

  • This study attempts to elucidate the possibility of treating landfill leachate by steelers' dust/${H_2}{O_2}$ system in a well-mixed batch reactor. Experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of operating variables such as pH, dust and ${H_2}{O_2}$ dosages and ${H_2}{O_2}$ injection method on the treatment efficiency, Contaminant concentrations were identified by TOC (Total Organic Carbon) analyzer. Experimental observations showed the possibility of steelers' dust as a catalytic reagent in the ${H_2}{O_2}$/dust system. The batch experiments showed that the optimal $H_2O$$_2$ and dust dosage, 20g/L dust. 2,000mg/L ${H_2}{O_2}$ removed about 75% of initial TOC concentration (250mg/1) within 60 min. And the TOC removal in the ${H_2}{O_2}$/dust system effectively proceeded only within a limited pH range of 3-4. The stealers' dust-catalyzed oxidative treatment of landfill leachate was more efficient compared with the $FeSO_2$catalyzed system (Fenton oxidation) for the removal rate and the cost.

  • Dioxygen binding and homogeneous catalytic oxidation of hydrazobenzene were investigated by employing tetradentate Schiff base Cobalt(II) complexes such as Co(II)(SED)$(Py)_2$, Co(II)(SOPD)$(Py)_2$ and Co(II)(SND)$(Py)_2$ in saturated oxygen methanol solvent. The major product of hydrazobenzene ($H_2$AB) oxidation by catalysts of superoxo type [Co(III)(SED)(Py)$O_2$] and [Co(III)(SOPD)(Py)$O_2$] complexes are trans-azobenzene (t-AB) and rate constants k for oxidation reaction was 7.692 ${\times}$ $10^{-2}$ M/sec for [Co(III)(SED)(Py)$O_2$] and 5.076 ${\times}$ $10^{-2}$ M/sec for [Co(III)(SOPD)(Py)$O_2$]. But cis-azobenzene (c-AB) are obtained as a major product with ${\mu}$-peroxo type [Co(III)(SED)(Py)]$_2O_2$ catalyst, and rate constant k is 1.266 ${\times}$ $10^{-2}$ M/sec. The rate constants of oxidation reaction has been studied spectrophotometrically and the rate law established. A mechanism involving a intermediate activated complexes of catalyst, hydrazobenzene and oxygen has been proposed. $H_2$AB + Co(II)(Schiff base)$(Py)_2$ + $O_2$ ${\rightleftharpoons}_{MeOH}^K$ Co(III)(Schiff base)(Py)$O_2$${\cdot}$$H_2$AB + Py $\longrightarrow^k$ Co(II)(Schiff base)$(Py)_2$ + t-AB + $H_2O_2$(Scchiff base : SED and SOPD). $H_2$AB + 2Co(II)(SND)$(Py)_2$ + $O_2$ ${\rightleftharpoons}_{MeOH}^K$ [Co(III)(SND)(Py)]$_2O_2$${\cdot}$H_2$AB + 2Py ${\longrightarrow}^k$ (Co(II)(SND)$(Py)_2$ + c-AB + $H_2O_2$.

  • 4H-SiC power metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs) have been developed to achieve lower specific-on-resistance (Ron,sp), and the gate oxides have been thermally grown. The poor channel mobility resulting from the high interface trap density (Dit) at the SiO2/4H-SiC interface significantly affects the higher switching loss of the power device. Therefore, the development of novel fabrication processes to enhance the quality of the SiO2/4H-SiC interface is required. In this paper, NO post-oxidation annealing (POA) by using the conditions of N2 diluted NO at a high temperature (1,300℃) is proposed to reduce the high interface trap density resulting from thermal oxidation. The NO POA is carried out in various NO ambient (0, 10, 50, and 100% NO mixed with 100, 90, 50, and 0% of high purity N2 gas to achieve the optimized condition while maintaining a high temperature (1,300℃). To confirm the optimized condition of the NO POA, measuring capacitance-voltage (C-V) and current-voltage (I-V), and time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) are employed. It is confirmed that the POA condition of 50% NO at 1,300℃ facilitates the equilibrium state of both the oxidation and nitridation at the SiO2/4H-SiC interface, thereby reducing the Dit.

Study on the Application of the Fenton Oxidation Method for Remediation of Small-scale Oil-contaminated Ballasts on Railroad Track (선로 내 소규모 유류오염도상자갈 정화를 위한 펜톤산화법의 적용성 연구)

  • In this study, Fenton oxidation was applied to railroad track ballasts contaminated with small amounts of oil. In order to perform the experiment on Fenton oxidation, petroleum contaminated ballast was collected from the railroad track and experiments on major factors of the remediation process were implemented in the laboratory. Then, the feasibility of insitu Fenton oxidation was investigated for the railroad track that was partially contaminated with oil. As a result, the residual TPH concentration of ballast was reduced to about 1,000 mg/kg-ballast in laboratory experiments using 0.1 mol Fe/L $H_2O_2$. Due to the drainage structure of the track bed, a considerable amount of $H_2O_2$ was released below the ballast without the sufficient reaction with the contaminated ballast; therefore, additional studies are necessary for the effective field application of Fenton oxidation.

Evaluation of Effective Process Operation for the Texitile Dyeing Wastewater by Ferrous Solution and Hydrogen Peroxide

  • The purpose of this research is to evaluate the removal efficiencies of COD$\_$Cr/ and color for the dyeing wastewater by the different dosages of ferrous solution and H$_2$O$_2$ in Fenton process. In the case of H$_2$O$_2$ divided dosage for the Fenton's reagent 7:3 of H$_2$O$_2$ was more effective than 3:7 to remove COD$\_$Cr/ and color. The results showed that COD$\_$Cr/ was mainly removed by Fenton coagulation, where the ferric ions are formed in the initial step of Fenton reaction. On the other hand color was removed by Fenton oxidation rather than Fenton coagulation. The removal mechanism of COD$\_$Cr/ and color was mainly coagulation by ferrous ion, ferric ion and Fenton oxidation. The removal efficiencies were dependent on the ferric ion amount at the beginning of the reaction. However, the final removal efficiency of COD$\_$Cr/ and color was in the order of Fenton oxidation, ferric ion coagulation and ferrous ion coagulation. The reason of the highest removal efficiency by Fenton oxidation can be explained by the chain reactions with ferrous solution, ferric ion and hydrogen peroxide.

A Study on the Treatment of Dyeing Wastewater Using TiO2/UV (TiO2/UV 산화기술을 이용한 염색폐수처리에 관한 연구)

  • This research uses the $TiO_2$/UV process to verify the most suitable condition and possibility to dispose dyeing wastewater that contains pigment and a large amount of pollutants. For this, this research has enforced experiments that compare photo adsorption, photolysis, and photo catalyst oxidation reaction, and also evaluated and analyzed the change of pH and $TiO_2$ dosage, irradiation rates of ultraviolet rays and the dosage change and injection method of $H_2O_2$. According to the results of the dyeing wastewater experiment of storehouse catalyst that uses the new form of $TiO_2$, the photo catalyst oxidation reaction proved to be more effective than photo adsorption and photolysis; 35%, 21% in the case of $TCOD_{cr}$ and 39%, 28% in the case of chromaticity. Taking into consideration the reaction time, amount of photo catalyst reaction and irradiation amount of ultraviolet rays, the decomposition efficiency of pH change proved to be most effective at pH 4. On the whole, the acidity area proved to be effective in dyeing water exclusion than neutral and alkalinity areas. Having evaluated the influence of $TiO_2$ dosage, not only does the decomposition efficiency continuously improve as the $TiO_2$ dosage increases but the shielding effect does not occur also when the $TiO_2$ is at a fixed state. The influence of ultraviolet irradiation amount concluded in the result that as the ultraviolet irradiation amount increases the decomposition efficiency continually increased, but in the case of chromaticity when the irradiation amount was higher than 37.8mW/cm2 the removal efficiency is slowed remarkably. The influence of $H_2O_2$ dosage evaluation reached the results that although the decomposition efficiency increases with the increase of $H_2O_2$ dosage, when above 150mg (total dosage: 1200mg) $H_2O_2$ consumes OH radical itself and reduces the decomposition efficiency. Also in the case of the $H_2O_2$ injection method rather than injecting in the whole amount of $H_2O_2$ (1200mg) needed at the beginning all at once, injecting divided quantities of $H_2O_2$ whenever the electric current density falls below 10mgfl reduces the wases of OH radical due to an excess of $H_2O_2$ and in tum heightens the decomposition efficiency.

  • The use of photo-catalytic processes in pollution abatement and resource has a significant economic importance. Therefore, the applications of photochemical oxidation of secondary effluent driven by UV, TiO2, TiO2/UV, H2O2/UV and TiO2/H2O2/UV, have been investigated in order to treat the secondary effluent from municipal sewage. Various experimental parameters such as BOD, CODcr, Nurbidity, total P, and SPC were examined in each photo-catalytic reaction system. The results showed that the application of single oxidant such as UV, TiO2 only has a minor effect on parameters reduction (CODcr, BOD, etc) to treat the secondary effluent, whereas the combinations of oxidants increase the removal efficiency. The best removal efficiency in every parameters was achieved by the combination of TiO2, H2O2 and UV. It was also found that the optimum amount of TiO2 for the treatment was 1g/ι to achieve water reuse standard. From the results, the photocatalytic reaction system can be an alternative as a post-treatment to treat the secondary effluent from municipal sewage.

A Novel Method for Preparing of Oxoruthenates Complexes: trans-[RuO3(OH)2]2-, [RuO4]-, (n-Pr4N)+[RuO4]- and [RuO4 and Their Use as Catalytic Oxidants

  • The synthesis and characterization of ${K_3[Ru(C_2O_4)3]{\cdot}4H_2O\;(C_2O_4}^{2-}$ = oxalato anoin) complex are described, and its redox properties (in buffer solution of pH = 12) have been investigated. This complex is used for in situ generation of oxoruthenates complexes which have been characterized by electronic spectroscopy. Reaction of ${K_3[Ru(C_2O_4)3]{\cdot}4H_2O$ with excess ${S_2O_8}^{2-}$ in molar KOH generates trans-${[RuO_3(OH)_2]^{2-}/S_2O_8}^{2-}$ reagent while with excess ${BrO_3}^-$ in molar $Na_2CO_3$ generates ${[RuO_4]^-/BrO_3}^-$ reagent. Avoiding the direct use of [$RuO_4$] the organic-soluble $(n-Pr_4N)^+[RuO_4]^-$, (TPAP) has been isolated by reaction of $K_3[Ru(C_2O_4)3]{\cdot}4H_2O$ with excess ${BrO_3}^-$ in molar carbonate and n-$Pr_4$NOH. In a mixture of $H_2O/CCl_4$ ruthenium tetraoxide can be generated by reaction of $K_3[Ru(C_2O_4)3]{\cdot}4H_2O$ with excess ${IO_4}^-$. The catalytic activities of oxoruthenates that have been made from $K_3[Ru(C_2O_4)3]{\cdot}4H_2O$ towards the oxidation of benzyl alcohol, piperonyl alcohol, benzaldehyde and benzyl amine at room temperature have been studied.

Optimal Condition of Operation Parameter for Livestock Carcass Leachate using Fenton Oxidation Process (가축 사체 매몰지 침출수 처리를 위한 Fenton 산화공정의 최적조건)

  • Outbreak of animal infectious diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease, avian influenza are becoming prevalent worldwide. For prevent the further infection, tremendous numbers of the infected or culled stocks are buried around farm. This burial method can generate a wide range of detrimental components such as leachate, nutrient, salt, and pathogenic bacteria, consequently. In this study, for the stabilization of livestock carcasses leachate, advanced oxidation processes utilizing the Fenton reaction was investigated in lab-scale experiments for the treatment for $COD_{Cr}$ of livestock carcass leachate. $COD_{Cr}$ reduction by the Fenton oxidation was investigated response surface methodology using the Box-Begnken methods were applied to the experimental results. A central composite design was used to investigate the effects of the independent variables of pH ($x_1$), dosage of $FeCl_2{\cdot}4H_2O$ ($x_2$) and dosage of $H_2O_2$ ($x_3$) on the dependent variables $COD_{Cr}$ concentration ($y_1$). A 1 M NaOH and $H_2SO_4$ was using for pH control, $FeCl_2{\cdot}4H_2O$ was used as iron catalyst and NaOH was used for Fenton reaction. The optimal conditions for Fenton oxidation process were determined: pH, dosage of $FeCl_2{\cdot}4H_2O$ and dosage of $H_2O_2$ were 3, 0.6 g (0.0151 M) and 7 mL(0.259 M), respectively. Statistical results showed the order of significance of the independent variables to be pH > initial concentration of ferrous ion > initial concentration of hydrogen peroxide.

Characteristics of Powder Prepared from Unirradiated $UO_2$ Pellets by Oxidation and Reduction Method ($UO_2$ 소결체의 산화/환원에 의해 제조된 분말 특성)

  • Unirradiated UO2 pellets were pulverized by oxidation in air at 40$0^{\circ}C$, and the oxidized powders were reduced in H2 and CO atmospheres at $600^{\circ}C$. During the oxidation of UO2 at 40$0^{\circ}C$, intergranular cracks which caused the spallation were mainly developed by the volume contraction due to the formation of intermediate phase (U4O9 or U3O7). As oxidation proceeded, U3O8 finally formed. As the oxidation/reduction cycles were repeated, the powder surface became coarser, specific surface area was increased and average particle size was decreased. The sintered densities of the powder were increased by the oxidation/reduction cycle due to the characteristic changes of the powder.
