  • The NO oxidation process has been applied to improve a removal efficiency of NO included in exhaust gas. In this study, to produce a dry oxidant for the NO oxidation process, the catalytic H2O2 decomposition method was proposed. A variety of the heterogeneous solid-acidic Mn-based catalysts were prepared for the catalytic H2O2 decomposition and the effect of their physico-chemical properties on the catalytic H2O2 decomposition were investigated. The results of this study showed that the acidic sites of the Mn-based catalysts has an influence on the catalytic H2O2 decomposition. The Mn-based catalyst having the abundant acidic sites within the wide temperature range in NH3-TPD shows the best performance for the catalytic H2O2 decomposition. Therefore, the NO oxidation efficiency, using the dry oxidant produced by the H2O2 decomposition over the Mn-based catalyst having the abundant acidic properties under the wide temperature range, was higher than the others. As a remarkable result, the best performances in the catalytic H2O2 decomposition and NO oxidation was shown when the Mn-based Fe2O3 support catalyst containing K component was used for the catalytic H2O2 decomposition.

  • Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is sulfaamide-based synthetic antibiotics, which are widely prescribed pharmaceutical compound to treat bacterial infections in both human and animals. Most of them are not completely decomposed as refractory substances. The environmental impact of pharmaceuticals as emerging contaminants has generated severe concerns. In this study, catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) of SMX was carried out with $Cu/Al_2O_3$ catalyst and investigated the optimum reaction conditions of temperature, dosage of catalyst and concentration of $H_2O_2$ to completely decompose the SMX. It was observed that SMX was completely decomposed within 20 min using 0.79 mM $H_2O_2$ and 6 g $Cu/Al_2O_3$ catalyst at 1 atm and $40^{\circ}C$, but SMX was not fully mineralized and converted to intermediates as hydroylated-SMX, sulfanilic acid, 4-aminobenzenesulfinic acid and nitrobenzene. After that these are completely mineralized through organic acid. We proposed the decomposition reaction path ways of SMX by analyzing the behavior of these intermediates. To investigate the durability of heterogeneous catalyst, decomposition of SMX was observed by continuously recycling catalysts. When the heterogeneous catalyst of 10 wt% $Cu/Al_2O_3$ was continuously reused 5 times, decomposition of SMX was a little lowered, but the activity of catalyst was overall very stable.

  • $Co_3O_4$ catalysts for $N_2O$ decomposition were prepared by co-precipitation method. Ce and Zr were added during the preparation of the catalyst as promoter with the molar ratio (Ce or Zr) / Co = 0.05. Also, 1 wt% $K_2CO_3$ was doped to the prepared catalyst with impregnation method to investigate the effect of K on the catalyst performance. The prepared catalysts were characterized with SEM, BET, XRD, XPS and $H_2-TPR$. The $Co_3O_4$ catalyst exhibited a spinel crystal phase, and the addition of the promoter increased the specific surface area and reduced the particle and crystal size. It was confirmed that the doping of K improves the catalytic activity by increasing the concentration of $Co^{2+}$ in the catalyst which is an active site for catalytic reaction. The catalytic activity tests were carried out at a GHSV of $45,000h^{-1}$ and a temperature range of $250{\sim}375^{\circ}C$. The K-impregnated $Co_3O_4$ catalyst showed much higher activity than $Co_3O_4$ catalysts with promoter only. It is found that the K-impregnation increased the concentration of $Co^{2+}$ more than the added of promoter did, and lowered the reduction temperature to a great extent.

  • $SF_6$, which has a high global warming potential, can be decomposed to sulfur and fluorine compounds through hydrolysis by $H_2O$ or oxidation by $O_2$ over solid acid catalysts. In this study ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ was employed as the solid acid catalyst for the abatement of $SF_6$ and its catalytic activity was investigated with respect to the reaction temperature and the space velocity. The catalytic activity for $SF_6$ decomposition by the hydrolysis reached the maximum at and above 973 K with the space velocity of $20,000\;ml/g_{-cat}{\cdot}h$, exhibiting a conversion very close to 100%. When the space velocity was lower than $45,000\;ml/g_{-cat}{\cdot}h$, the conversion was maintained at the maximum value. On the other hand, the conversion of $SF_6$ by the oxidation was about 20% under the same conditions. The SEM and XRD analyses revealed that the ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ was transformed to ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ during the hydrolysis and to $AlF_3$ during the oxidation, respectively. The size of $AlF_3$ after the oxidation was over $20\;{\mu}m$, and its catalytic activity was low due to the low surface area. Therefore, it was concluded that the hydrolysis over ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ was much more favorable than the oxidation for the catalytic decomposition of $SF_6$.

  • This study investigated the influence of catalyst preparation on the activity of $Co-CeO_2$ catalyst for $N_2O$ decomposition. $Co-CeO_2$ catalysts were synthesized by co-precipitation and incipient wetness impregnation. In order to estimate the performance of the as prepared catalysts, direct catalytic $N_2O$ decomposition test was carried out under $250{\sim}375^{\circ}C$. As a result, the catalyst prepared by co-precipitation (CoCe-CP) showed an enhanced performance on $N_2O$ decomposition reaction even in the presence of $O_2$ and/or $H_2O$, whereas the impregnation catalyst (CoCe-IM) did not. In order to investigate the difference in catalytic activity, characterization such as XRD, BET, TEM, $H_2-TPR$, $O_2-TPD$, and XPS was conducted. It is confirmed that the particle size and specific surface area were changed depending on the catalyst preparation method and the synthesis process influenced the physical properties of the catalysts. In addition, the improvement in the activity of the catalyst prepared by co-precipitation is due to the enhanced reduction from $Co^{3+}$ to $Co^{2+}$ and the improved oxygen desorption rate. However, it has been confirmed that the surface electron state and binding energy, which are related to $N_2O$ decomposition, do not change depending on the preparation method.

  • Fenton's reagent is applied to directly decompose the ion-exchange resins, IRN-78 and the mixed resin with IRN-77. The newly applied procedures is to dry the resin first and the catalyst solution is completely absorbed into the resin, then a limited dose of $H_2O_2$ is introduced for an effective reaction between the reagents within the resin. As a characteristic on the decomposition of IRN-78, the resin mixture should be heated to $40^{\circ}C$ to induce the initial reaction and lag time is also needed for about 20 minutes until the main reaction occurs. The effectiveness of the decomposition is investigated using $CuSO_4,\;Cu(NO_3)_2\;and\;FeSO_4$ as a catalyst and the decomposition rate is compared depending on the concentration of each catalyst and the amount of $H_2O_2$. The most effective catalyst was found to be $FeSO_4$ for IRN-78 alone and the mixed resin with IRN-77, and $FeSO_4$ showed a special effect that the reaction was initiated without heating and a lag time. Furthermore, the optimum concentration of the catalyst for each resin and the mixed one is suggested in the view point of the amount of $H_2O_2$ needed and the stability of the decomposition reaction.

  • The characteristics of cyanide decomposition in aqueous phase by hydrogen peroxide have been explored in an effort to develop a process to recycle waste water. The self-decomposition of $H_2O$$_2$at pH 10 or below was minimal even in 90 min., with keeping about 90% of $H_2O$$_2$undissociated. On the contrary, at pH 12 only 9% of it remained during the same time. In the presence of copper catalyst at 5 g Cu/L, complete decomposition of $H_2$O$_2$was accomplished at pH 12 even in a shorter time of 40 min. The volatility of free cyanide was decisively dependent on the solution pH: the majority of free cyanide was volatilized at pH 8 or below, however, only 10% of it was volatilized at pH 10 or above. In non-catalytic cyanide decomposition, the free cyanide removal was incomplete in 300 min. even in an excessive addition of $H_2$$O_2$at a $H_2$$O_2$/CN molar ratio of 4, with leaving behind about 8% of free cyanide. On the other hand, in the presence of copper catalyst at a Cu/CN molar ratio of 0.2, the free cyanide was mostly decomposed in only 16 min. at a reducedH202/CN molar ratio of 2. Ihe efnciency of HBO2 in cyanide decomposition decreased with increasing addition of H2O2 since the seu-decomposition rate of $H_2$$O_2$increased. At the optimum $H_2$$O_2$/mo1ar ratio 0.2 of and Cu/CN molar ratio of 0.05, the free cyanide could be completely decomposed in 70 min., having a self-decomposition rate of 22 mM/min and a H$_2$$O_2$ efficiency of 57%.

  • In this work, the $N_2O$ decomposition catalyst and reaction characteristics to control the $N_2O$ removal were described. Experiments were carried out by using Rh as an active metal catalyst on various supports and the $Rh/CeO_2$ catalyst with $CeO_2$ support showed the best activity for the $N_2O$ decomposition when it was prepared under the constant heat treatment condition ($500^{\circ}C$-4 hr). $H_2-TPR$ and XPS analyzes were performed to confirm the effect of the physical and chemical properties of the catalyst on $N_2O$ decomposition. As a result, it was found that the increase of the oxygen transfer capacity of the catalyst due to the increase of both the redox property and $Ce^{3+}$ amount affected the decomposition reaction of $N_2O$. In addition, the future work will include a treatment process capable of decomposition $N_2O$ and NO under the condition that $N_2O$ and NO are simultaneously generated and its characteristics of $N_2O$ decomposition reaction.

  • Direct catalytic decomposition is a promising method for controlling the emission of nitrous oxide (N2O) from the semiconductor and display industries. In this study, a γ-Al2O3 catalyst was developed to reduce N2O emissions by a catalytic decomposition reaction. The γ-Al2O3 catalyst was prepared by an extrusion method using boehmite powder, and a N2O decomposition test was performed using a catalyst reactor that was approximately 25.4 mm (1 in) in diameter packed with approximately 5 mm of catalysts. The N2O decomposition tests were carried out with approximately 1% N2O at 550 to 750 ℃, an ambient pressure, and a GHSV=1800-2000 h-1. To confirm the N2O decomposition properties and the effect of O2 and steam on the N2O decomposition, nitrogen, air, and air and steam were used as atmospheric gases. The catalytic decomposition tests showed that the 1% N2O had almost completely disappeared at 700 ℃ in an N2 atmosphere. However, air and steam decreased the conversion rate drastically. The long term stability test carried out under an N2 atmosphere at 700 ℃ for 350 h showed that the N2O conversion rate remained very stable, confirming no catalytic activity changes. From the results of the N2O decomposition tests and long-term stability test, it is expected that the prepared γ-Al2O3 catalyst can be used to reduce N2O emissions from several industries including the semiconductor, display, and nitric acid manufacturing industry.
