  • Two lanthanide complexes, $[Ln(NO_3)_2(H_2O)_3(L)_2](NO_3)(H_2O)$ {Ln = Eu (1), Tb (2); L = 2-(4-pyridylium)-ethanesulfonate, $(4-pyH)^+-CH_2CH_2-SO_3^-)$}, were prepared from lanthanide nitrate and 4-pyridineethanesulfonic acid in $H_2O$ under microwave-heating conditions. Complexes 1 and 2 are isostructural, and the lanthanide metal in both complexes is coordinated to nine oxygen atoms. The pyridyl nitrogen in the ligand is protonated to give a zwitter ion that possesses an $NH^+$ (pyridyl) positive end and an $SO_3^-$ negative end. All O-H and N-H hydrogen atoms participate in hydrogen bonds to generate a two-dimensional (complex 1) or a three-dimensional network (complex 2). Complex 1 exhibits an intense red emission, whereas complex 2 exhibits an intense green emission in the solid state at room temperature.

  • Age-related changes in bone metabolism are well established by biochemical markers of bone matrix in serum and urine, but analysis of the residual bone matrix, which is still turning over, has not been investigated. In the present study, we measured in vivo rates of bone protein synthesis using a precursor-product method based on the exchange of ²H from ²H₂O into amino acids. Four percent ²H₂O was administered to mice in drinking water after intraperitonial (i.p) bolus injection of 99.9% ²H₂O. Mice were divided into the two groups: growing young mice were administered 4% ²H₂O for 12 weeks after an i.p bolus injection at 5 week of age, whereas weight stable adult mice started drinking 4% ²H₂O 8 weeks later than the growing group and continued 4% ²H₂O drinking for 8 weeks. Mass isotopomer abundance in alanine from bone protein was analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Body ²H₂O enrichments were in the range of 1.88-2.41% over the labeling period. The fractional synthesis rates (ks) of bone protein were 2.000±0.071%/d for growing mice and 0.243±0.014%/d for adult mice. These results demonstrate that the bone protein synthesis rate decreases with age and present direct evidence of age-related changes in bone protein synthesis.

Simultaneous Monitoring of KVN 4 Bands toward Evolved Stars

  • We propose simultaneous monitoring observations of 22 GHz $H_2O$ and 43/86/129 GHz SiO masers toward ~15 evolved stars in order to investigate spatial structure and dynamical effect from SiO to $H_2O$ maser regions including mass-loss process and development of asymmetry in circumstellar envelopes. We also aim at investigating mutual association and difference between SiO and $H_2O$ masers for establishing SiO and $H_2O$ maser models coupled to hydrodynamical model of circumstellar envelope. In addition, the correlation and difference of SiO maser properties among J=1-0, J=2-1, and J=3-2 transition masers are traced according to different type of stars for constraining SiO pumping models. These scientific goals and target sources were determined based on KVN single dish and VLBI feasibility test observations at 4 bands. As a total observing time of every 2 month monitoring, about 90 and 360 hours (in average per year) are required for single dish and VLBI observations, respectively. From the 2014B observing season, these monitoring observations will be derived as one of KVN key science programs.

  • These studies were conducted to investigate the chemical composition changes in in vitro digestibility for the improvement of nutritive value of rice straw by alkaline hydrogen peroxide. The content of neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin in rice straw was decreased with higher level of $H_2O_2\;(pH 11.5)$. The content of ADF, cellulose and ash of the rice straw washed after $H_2O_2\;(pH 11.5)$ treatment tended to be increased but NDF, hemicellulose and lignin were decreased with higher concentration of $H_2O_2\;(pH 11.5)$. In the rice straw washed after alkaline hydrogen peroxide treatment the decomposition of cellulose and lignin was effective in $pH\;11.5{\sim}12.5$, in smaller cutting size and $55^{\circ}C$. The in vitro organic matter digestibility was increased with higher $H_2O_2$ concentration and smaller cutting size of rice straw.

Separation of Hydrogen-Nitrogen Gases by PDMS-SiO2·B2O3 Composite Membranes (PDMS-SiO2·B2O3 복합막에 의한 수소-질소 기체 분리)

  • $SiO_2{\cdot}B_2O_3$ was prepared by trimethylborate (TMB)/tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) mole ratio 0.01 at $800^{\circ}C$. PDMS[poly(dimethysiloxane)]-$SiO_2{\cdot}B_2O_3$ composite membranes were prepared by adding porous $SiO_2{\cdot}B_2O_3$ to PDMS. To investigate the characteristics of PDMS-$SiO_2{\cdot}B_2O_3$ composite membrane, we observed PDMS-$SiO_2{\cdot}B_2O_3$ composite membrane using TG-DTA, FT-IR, BET, X-ray, and SEM. PDMS-$SiO_2{\cdot}B_2O_3$ composite membrane was studied on the permeabilities of $H_2$ and $N_2$ and the selectivity ($H_2/N_2$). Following the results of TG-DTA, BET, X-ray, FT-IR, $SiO_2{\cdot}B_2O_3$ was the amorphous porous $SiO_2{\cdot}B_2O_3$ with $247.6868m^2/g$ surface area and $37.7821{\AA}$ the mean of pore diameter. According to the TGA measurements, the thermal stability of PDMS-$SiO_2{\cdot}B_2O_3$ composite membrane was enhanced by inserting $SiO_2{\cdot}B_2O_3$. SEM observation showed that the size of dispersed $SiO_2{\cdot}B_2O_3$ in the PDMS-$SiO_2{\cdot}B_2O_3$ composite membrane was about $1{\mu}m$. The increasing of $SiO_2{\cdot}B_2O_3$ content in PDMS leaded the following results in the gas permeation experiment: the permeability of both $H_2$ and $N_2$ was increased, and the permeability of $H_2$ was higher than $N_2$, but the selectivity($H_2/N_2$) was decreased.

  • The temperature effects on the equilibria between polymolybdatd anions in 1M sodium perchlorate solution has been investigated in the temperature range of 20~50$^{\circ}$C. The polymolybdate anions formed are heptamolybdate ($Mo_7O_{24}^{6-}$) ions and the protonized forms of heptamolybdate ions ($H_LMo_7O_{24}^{(6-L)-}$). The equilibrium constants for the formation of heptamolybdate ions calculated by Sillen's method are as follow;$8H^{+}+7MoO_4^{2-}=Mo_7O_{24}^{6-}+4H_2O$, $k_{7.8}=2.77{\times}10^{53}:20^{\circ}C= 9.29{\times}10^{51}:40^{\circ}C$,$k_{7.8}= 4.22{\times}10^{52}:30^{\circ}C = 9.29{\times}10^{51}:50^{\circ}C$ The enthalpy change for calculated for the above reaction is 31.51 kcal/mole. A method of calculation of the equilibrium constants for the formation of protonized heptamolybdate ions from heptamolybdate ions and hydrogen ions has been derived. The equilibrium constants calculated for the formation of protonized heptamolybdate ions are as follow; $ LH^++ Mo_7O_{24}^{-6} = H_LMo_7O_{24}^{(6-L)-} : L = 1\;or\;2$, $k_1 = 2.31{\times}10^4=2.53{\times}10^4=2.76{\times}10^4= 3.10{\times}10^4$, $k_2 = 6.19{\times}10^7\;20^{\circ}C = 7.80{\times}10^7\;30^{\circ}C = 1.22{\times}10^8\;40^{\circ}C = 2.03{\times}10^8\;50^{\circ}C$The enthalpy change for the following step reactions are as follow;$H^{+}+Mo_7O_{24}^{6-}= HMo_7O_{24}^{5-}\;{\Delta}H^{\circ}=1.90 kcal/mole$, $2H^{+}+Mo_7O_{24}^{6-}=H_2Mo_7O_{24}^{4-}\;{\Delta}H^{\circ}=7.50kcal/mole$

  • Iodine-sulfur(IS) hydrogenation production process consists of three sections, which are so called a Bunsen reaction section, a HI decomposition section and a $H_2SO_4$ decomposition section as a closed cycle. For highly efficient operation of a Bunsen reaction section, we investigated the phase separation characteristics of $H_2SO_4-HI-H_2O-I_2$ system into two liquid phases($H_2SO_4$-rich phase and $HI_x$-rich phase) in the high temperature ranges, mainly from 353 to 393 K, and in the $H_2SO_4/HI/H_2O/I_2$ molar ratio of $1/2/14{\sim}30/0.3{\sim}13.50$. The desired results for the minimization of impurities in each phase were obtained in conditions with the higher temperature and the higher $I_2$ molar composition. On the basis of the distribution of $H_2O$ to each phase, it is appeared that the affinity between $HI_x$ and $H_2O$ was more superior to that between $H_2SO_4$ and $H_2O$.

  • The reactions of adsorbed oxygen species, $O_2^-$ and $O^-$, with propylene on ZnO were studied by EPR spectroscopy and temperature programmed desorption technique. Propylene interacts with adsorbed $O_2^-$ at $25^{\circ}C$ and the surface intermediate was decomposed to CO, $H_2$, $CO_2$ and $CH_4$ by raising the temperature above $200^{\circ}C$, while $O^-$ gave the products of complete oxidation, $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ above $300^{\circ}C$.

  • Synthesis of high purity ultrafine Si3N4 and ${\beta}$-Sialon powders was investigated via the simultaneous reduction and nitriding of amorphous SiO2, SiO2-Al2O3 system prepaerd by hydrolysis of alkoxides, using carbonablack as a reducing agent. In Si(OC2H5)4-C2H5 OH-H2 O-NH4OH system, hydrolysis rate increased with increasing reaction temperature and pH. Pure ${\alpha}$-Si3N4 was formed at 1350$^{\circ}C$ for 5 hrs in N2 atmosphere. In Si(OC2H5)4-Al(OC3H7)3-C6H6-H2 O-NH4OH system, weight loss increased as Si/Al ratio decreased. Single phase ${\beta}$-Sialon consisted of Si/Al=2 was formed at 1350$^{\circ}C$ in N2 and minor phases of ${\alpha}$-Si3N4, AIN, and X-phase were existed besides theSialon phase at other Si/Al ratios. The Si3N4 and Sialon powders synthesized from alkoxides consisted of uniform find particles of 0.05-0.2$\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter, respectively.

  • A nickel foam, one of metal foams was seleced as a catalyst support instead of conventional ceramic materials. $Al_2O_3$ was coated on the surface of nickel foam to increase the surface area. $Al_2O_3$ coating process was based on sol-gel process. SEM image was obtained and $Al_2O_3$ coverage was confirmed. Combustion experiments were carried out using SUS combustor and $H_2$/air mixture. Temperatures were measured with different equivalence ratios and $H_2$ flow rates. $H_2$ conversion rates were calculated by the analysis of product gas using gas chromatography. Catalytic combustion of $H_2$ was complete and stable with Pt/$Al_2O_3$ coated nickel foam and influences of water vapor were confirmed during the beginning of combustion.
