Adsorption kinetics and isotherms of phosphate and its removal from wastewater using mesoporous titanium oxide

  • The adsorption of phosphate onto mesoporous $TiO_2$ was investigated in order to reduce phosphorus concentrations in wastewater and provide a potential mode of phosphorus recovery. Three equilibrium isotherms were used to optimize and properly describe phosphate adsorption ($R^2$>0.95). The maximum capacity of phosphate on the adsorbent was found to be 50.4 mg/g, which indicated that mesoporous $TiO_2$ could be an alternative to mesoporous $ZrO_2$ as an adsorbent. A pseudo-second order model was appropriately fitted with experimental data ($R^2$>0.93). Furthermore, the suitable pH for phosphate removal by $TiO_2$ was observed to be in the range of pH 3-7 in accordance with ion dissociation. In contrast, increasing the pH to produce more basic conditions noticeably disturbed the adsorption process. Moreover, the kinetics of the conducted temperature study revealed that phosphate adsorption onto the $TiO_2$ adsorbent is an exothermic process that could have spontaneously occurred and resulted in a higher randomness of the system. In this study, the maximum adsorption using real wastewater was observed at $30^{\circ}C$.

Identification of Derivatives of Cobalt-binding BLM-A2 by NMR

  • Three different derivatives were obtained in the synthesis of cobalt-binding BLM-A2 and characterized by NMR and Mass spectrometry. It was found that Component 1 is Co(II)($2H_2O$)(BLM-A2), component 2 is Co(III)($OOH^-$)(BLM-A2) and component 3 is Co(III)($H_2O$)($OH^-$)(BLM-A2), respectively. Component 2 and 3 were interestingly dominated when CoBLM-A2 complex was synthesized under basic condition. In this experiment, it was revealed newly that the brown form (component 1) was 6-coordinated structure composed with not 5 ligands but 4 ligands from BLM-A2 and with $2H_2O$ as the axial ligands. The component 3 exhibiting a novel ligand configuration is found, and the structure of component 3 was observed to be very similar to that of component 1 in the kind of their ligands but one of the axial ligand is $OH^-$ instead of $H_2O$. These ligand configurations are different from the green form (component 2) exhibiting 6-coordinate structure composed of 5 ligands from BLM-A2 and one ligand of $OOH^-$, being consistent with former studies.

Isolation and Identification of Flavonoids from Corn Silk (옥수수수염에 함유된 Flavonoids의 분리 및 동정)

  • This study was carried out to isolate and characterize the flavonoids present in corn silks. Maysin content in the unpollinated corn silks (Kwangpyeongok) showed its highest level at 3 days after silking, and decreased thereafter, while the content of open pollinated silks were consistently decreased after silking. This result indicates that the maysin content is considerably affected by the pollination of corn silk. Unpollinated corn silks were collected with excising, and ethanol employed to extract flavonoids at common temperature for 9 days. After extraction, chlorophyll, lipids etc. were removed with methylene chloride, then submitted to flash column cartridge ($150{\times}40mm$ i.d.) packed with a preparative $RP-C_{18}$ bulk packing material ($125{\AA}$, $55-105{\mu}m$), and monitored at 352 nm. Four fractions, fraction-I, -II, -III, and -IV, were isolated from ethanolic extract of corn silks. Absorption spectrum of fraction I showed its maximum intensity (${\lambda}_{max}$) at 327 nm and 239 nm, fraction-II showed its maximum intensity at 339 nm and 274 nm, fraction-III showed its maximum intensity at 345 nm and 277 nm, and fraction-IV showed its maximum intensity at 352 nm, 270 nm, 257 nm, respectively. On the baisis of ESI micro-TOF analysis, fraction-I was identified as chlorogenic acid (m/z 355, 3-(3,4-dihydroxycinnamoyl) quinic acid, $C_{16}H_{18}O_9$), fraction-II identified as a mixture of chlorogenic acid and luteolin 3'-methyl ether 7-glucuronosyl-($1{\rightarrow}2$)-glucuronide (m/z 653, $C_{28}H_{28}O_{18}$), fraction-III identified as a mixture of chlorogenic acid luteolin 7-O-neohesperidoside (m/z 595, $C_{27}H_{30}O_{15}$), and luteolin 3'-methyl ether 7-glucuronosyl-($1{\rightarrow}2$)-glucuronide, and fraction-IV identified as maysin (m/z 577, 2"-O-${\alpha}$-L-rhamnosyl-6-C-(6-deoxy-xylohexose-4-ulosyl)luteolin, $C_{27}H_{28}O_{14}$), respectively. From the ethanolic extract of corn silks, fraction-I was obtained about 35 mg/100 g F.W., fraction-II was about 48 mg/100 g F.W., fraction-III was about 46 mg/100 g F.W., and fraction-IV was about 138 mg/100 g F.W., respectively.

  • 과산화수소는 광화학적 이차 생성물질이며 대기의 산화상태를 알려주는 지시자의 역할을 한다. H2O2 는 O3의 광분해로 시작되는 광화학 반응 중 HO2 radical 의 self reaction(HO2+ HO2+M$\longrightarrow$H2O2+M)으로 주로 생성된다(Lee,2000). 대기 내 수명이 1-2일인 과산화수소를 측정하므로써 오존의 대표적인 전구물질인 NOx와 VOC를 산화시키는 OH, HO2 라디칼의 농도를 예측할 수 있고 궁극적으로 오존을 저감하는 대책을 세우는데 필요한 요인으로 사용된다. (중략)

Modified sorbitol MacConkey agar for the rapid isolation of Escherichia coli O157:H7

  • Unlike most Escherichia coli strains, E coli O157 : H7 didn't ferment sorbitol within 24h of incubation and showed a negative reaction for $\beta$-glucuronidase. We developed a new medium for the rapid isolation of E coli O157 : H7 using sorbitol MacConkey agar with cefixime, potassium tellurite and 4-methylumbelliferyl-${\beta}$-D-glucuronide (MUG) as a primary plating medium. The addition of $20{\mu}g/ml$ of vancomycin in enrichment broth for E coli O157 : H7 inhibited lots of Gram positive bacteria. Three strains (10.3%) of 29 non-O157 E coli strains and 3 strains (8.3%) of 36 Salmonella spp were inhibited at the $0.05{\mu}g/ml$ of cefixime and 23 strains (79.3%) of 29 non-O157 E coli strains and 12 strains (33.3%) of 36 Salmonella spp were inhibited at the $2.0{\mu}g/ml$ of potassium tellurite. But none of the E coli O157 : H7 was affected at these concentration. The addition of MUG at $100{\mu}g/ml$ level to sorbitol MacConkey agar with cefixime and potassium tellurite (CTM-SMAC) aided in the rapid isolation of E coli O157 : H7 from samples by checking sorbitol-negative and $\beta$-glucuronidase negative phenotypes simultaneously. In conclusion, inoculation of a positive in the O157 screening test from enrichment broth on CTM-SMAC appeared to be a rapid, cost-effective and sensitive method for the isolation of E coli O157 : H7.

  • Reaction between 2-pyridinecarboxylic acid (Hpic) and $K_3[Cr(O_2)_4]$ give complex $[Cr(pic)_3].H_2O$ (1) which is characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopic methods (FT-IR, Raman) and X-ray crystallography. In the crystal structure of 1, chromium atom with coordinated by three nitrogen and three oxygen atoms has a distorted octahedral geometry. Also a water molecule is incorporated in crystal network. Each water molecule acts as hydrogen bond bridging and connects two adjacent complexes by two $O-H{\cdots}O$ hydrogen bonds.

  • The low-voltage driven $SrTiO_3$ceramic varistor device was fabricated from $SrTiO_3$ powders prepared by co-precipitation method with $CuO-SiO_2$additives. Compare with conventional process, this process has advantages such as the reduction of the sintering temperature of $SrTiO_3$ ceramics by 100-$150^{\circ}C$ and the simplification of processing procedure. The non-linear coefficient value ($\alpha$) of the varistor showed 8.47 when it was sintered at $1350^{\circ}C$ for 2 h with 5 wt% additives in reducing atmosphere of 5% $H_2/N_2$ mixed gas. The low-voltage driven $SrTiO_3$ceramic varistor was obtained which has a breakdown voltage as low as 7 V.

Nano-crystallization Behavior and Optical Properties of Na2O-Nb2O5-TeO2Glasses (1) (Na2O-Nb2O5-TeO2계 유리의 광학적 성질과 나노-결정화거동 (1))

  • In order to develop a new type of nonlinear optical materials or photocatlaysts, Na$_2$O-Nb$_2$ $O_{5}$-Te $O_2$ glasses were prepared using conventional melt quenching method, and the crystallization behaviors and optical properties of these glasses was investigated. The optical and physical properties for Na$_2$O-Nb$_2$ $O_{5}$-Te $O_2$ glasses are: refractive index, n=2.04$\pm$0.04; density, p (g/㎤)=4.87$\pm$0.58; optical energy band of the transmission cut-off wavelength, E$_{0}$ (eV)=3.14$\pm$0.04. The transparent glass ceramics consisting of the nanocrysatls were obtained when the Na$_2$O-Nb$_2$ $O_{5}$-Te $O_2$ glass was first heat-treated at 3$50^{\circ}C$ for 1 h and than at 40$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. A cubic crystalline phase consisting of the nano-crysatls transforms into a stable phase at temperature above 47$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 h.

Desulfurization Ability of CuO-Fe2O3 Sorbents with Respect to the Calcination Temperature by GC/microreactor (GC/microreactor를 이용한 소성온도에 따른 CuO-Fe2O3 흡수제의 탈황성능)

  • The desulfurization abilities using GC/microreactor have been examined for $CuO-Fe_2O_3$ sorbents with respect to calcination temperatures of 700, 900 and $1,100^{\circ}C$. CuO was used as a main active component, $Fe_2O_3$ was used as an additive one and 25 wt% $SiO_2$ was used as a support. The desulfurization reaction temperature was $500^{\circ}C$ and the regeneration reaction temperature was $700^{\circ}C$. From the XRD results, the $CuFeO_2$ compound has been observed for the fresh sorbent calcined at $1,100^{\circ}C$ and the $CuFeS_2$ compound for the reacted sorbent calcined at $1,100^{\circ}C$. By the BET results, however any significant differences among sorbents calcined at the three different temperatures of 700, 900 and $1,100^{\circ}C$ haven't been observed. Especially CFS1 (CuO : $Fe_2O_3$ : $SiO_2$=67.5 wt% : 7.5 wt% : 25 wt%) sorbent calcined at $1,100^{\circ}C$ maintained about 10 g sulfur/100 g sorbent for 100 cycles by the cyclic test.

  • 수소가 Pt/$MoO_3$로 흡장되는 현상을 XRD, TEM, CO 화학흡착 분석방법을 사용하여 조사하였다. 소성과정은 Pt/$MoO_3$ 촉매의 Chlorine 함유량을 감소하며 박막을 형성하였다. 소성전과 비교하여 수소 흡장량은 소성 후에 증가하였다. Orthorhombic Pt/$MoO_3$은 Hexagonal Pt/$MoO_3$보다 항상 수소 흡장량이 증가하였다. 상대적으로 Hexagonal Pt/$MoO_3$에서 수소 흡장량이 감소하는 이유는 Hexagonal 결정격자 내에 존재하는 $NH_4^+$ 이온에 기인하는 것으로 판단된다. 결정격자 내부로의 수소 침투시 암모니움 이온이 수소내부 기공에 장애물 역할을 하므로, 수소 흡장량이 감소하는 것으로 판단된다.
