  • Combustion process with citrate was used to produce the LiMn$_2$O$_4$powder. Precursors are pre-ignited in open air followed by post-heating in the range from $600^{\circ}C$ to 80$0^{\circ}C$ for 4h. With varying the molar ratio (R) of ethylene glycol (EG) to citric acid (CA) from 0 to 4, the effect of EG content on powder characteristics is evaluated. Vacuum drying promote the auto-ignition at room temperature. With small addition of EG metal ion was selectively segregated with organic substances and undesired lithium evaporation occurred during post-heating. LiMn$_2$O$_4$phase which is produced by combustion reaction was decomposed back to Mn$_3$O$_4$because the reaction temperature was higher than 95$0^{\circ}C$. With increasing EG content, the homogeneity of LiMn$_2$O$_4$powder increased and specific surface area increased. And lithium evaporation during vacuum drying and/or ignition also increased.

  • pH buffer capacities (pHBC, $cmol_c\;kg^{-1}\;pH^{-1}$) of 6 residual Entisols derived from granite, granite-gneiss, limestone, sandstone, shale, and basalt in Korea were studied. Soil acidity may become a problem if the soil pH is reduced to critical levels when nutrient cycles are unbalanced (especially N, C and S). The relation between the pHBC and the physico-chemical properties of the 6 soils was also studied. In the A horizons of all the soils except Euiseong series developed from sandstone, the contents of clay, organic matter and cation exchange capacity (CEC) were higher than those of C horizon, but bulk density and pH were lower than C horizon. Clay content of Euiseong series decreased with soil depth, which might be caused by the elluviation. The soils developed from granite, granite-gneiss and sandstone have a higher $SiO_2$ content than those developed from basalt and limestone. The contents of $Fe_2O_3$ and MgO were high in the soils from developed from basalt, limestone and shale comparing with the soils from granite, granite-gneiss and sandstone. The soils from basalt and limestone showed higher values of ignition loss than those from the other parent rocks. The pHBC of the soils was ranged from 1.8 to 3.2 $cmol_c\;kg^{-1}\;pH^{-1}$ showing as follows : basalt, limestone > shale, granite-gneiss > granite sandstone.

  • This investigation was conducted to know the present conditions of the the chemical components in the soils and chemical fertilizer rates applied in the Yuyu village located Sanne myun, Buan gun, Jeonbug province. Total silkworm rearing farms in this village were 54 and 47 of them were chosen at random. Average fertilizer rate applied in this village was 40.8-13.7-13.9kg/10a as N-P$_2$O$\_$5/-K$_2$O. Farmers seemed to stress too much to nitrogen fertilizer. Available P$_2$O$\_$5/ in soils was below 7ppm (by Bray No. 1 method). However, 47% of the farms applied phosphate fertilizer less than 11kg/10a. The average of exchangeable K in soils was 0.68me/100g. Nine of the farms applied potassium fertilizer more than 20kg/10a and 7 farms of them had the soils contained above 0.4me/100g as the potassium content. The average soil pH was 5.3. All of the soils were below than pH 6.5. Exchangeable Ca and Mg were 3.62 and 0.83me/100g, respectively. The average lime requirement was 269kg/10a. The average organic matter content was 2.55% and for 72% of the total farms, organic matter content was below than 3%.

  • Because of their short harvest season, large quantities of persimmons must often be processed within a limited time. Therefore, new methods to extend their storage life are required. This study examined the effects of chlorine dioxide (ClO2) gas fumigation for various treatment periods on the storage quality of astringent persimmons Cheongdobansi under low-temperature conditions. The conditions consisted of continuous treatment with ClO2, treatment for 2 weeks with ClO2, and no treatment, all of which are stored at low temperatures. Control samples (storage 0 days) without any treatment were prepared and all experiments were conducted for 10 weeks at two-week intervals. The ClO2 gas treatment maintained the moisture content, color value, hardness, soluble tannin content, and sensory characteristics. However, ClO2 gas treatment did not affect the soluble solids, pH, and total sugar content. In particular, continuous treatment with ClO2 maintained the storage quality after 6-8 weeks of storage, particularly the hardness and weakness (sensory evaluation). The results suggest the potential of continuous treatment with ClO2 as a highly effective method for maintaining the freshness of Cheongdobansi.

  • This study was conducted to confirm the effect of bypass dust on the hydration and mechanical properties of the cement pastes and mortar obtained from ordinary Portland cement (OPC), OPC-slag and OPC-fly ash system. The rate of heat evolution is accelerated with the content of By-pass Dust(BD). total heat evolution increased because alkali-chlorides activated the hydration of blended cement. Compressive strength and bound water content show maximum value at 5wt% By-pass Dust(BD) on each curing time in ordinary Portland cement and slag blended cement. Ca(OH)2 content of Ordinary Portland Cement increased as the content of BD and curing time. In blended cement, the formation of Ca(OH)2 is active at early hydration stage. By pozzolanic reaction, the content of Ca(OH)2 is decreased as curing time goes by. According to the BD content stable chlorides complex of Friedel's salt (C3A·CaCl2·10H2O) is created. Due to the hydration activation effect of chlorides and alkali we observed Type II C-S-H, which developed into densest microstructure.

  • The objective of this research was to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of blood meal (BM) as a source of histidine, and magnesium oxide (MgO) as a catalyst of carnosine synthetase, on carnosine (L-Car) content in the chicken breast muscle (CBM), laying performance, and egg quality of spent old hens. Four hundred eighty laying hens (Hy-Line$^{(R)}$ Brown), 95wk old, were allotted randomly into five replicates of six dietary treatments: T1; 100% basal diet, T2; 100% basal diet+MgO, T3; 97.5% basal diet+2.5% BM, T4; 97.5% basal diet+2.5% BM+MgO, T5; 95% basal diet+5% BM, T6; 95% basal diet+5% BM+MgO. Magnesium oxide was added at 0.3% of diets. The layers were fed experimental diets for 5wk. There were no significant differences in the weekly L-Car content in CBM among all treatments during the total experimental period, but some of the contrast comparisions showed higher L-Car in CBM of T6. The L-Car contents linearly decreased (p<0.01 or p<0.05) as the layers got older except in T4 (p>0.05). There were significant differences in egg weight (p<0.01) and soft and broken egg ratio (p<0.05). The control (T1) was highest in egg weight and T6 was lowest in soft and broken egg ratio. Among the parameters of egg quality, there were significant differences in eggshell strength (p<0.01) and egg yolk color (p<0.05). Magnesium oxide supplementation increased the eggshell strength and BM tended to decrease egg yolk color. Eggshell color, eggshell thickness, and Haugh unit were not influenced by BM and MgO. In conclusion, BM and MgO did not significantly influence the L-Car in CBM of spent layers. The L-Car content rapidly decreased as the layers became senescent. Eggshell strength was increased by MgO supplementation.

  • We investigated the mortality and the oxidative damages of Deschampsia antarctica in response to waterlogging stress. In field, we compared the changes in the density of D. antarctica tuft at the two different sites over 3 years. The soil water content at site 2 was 6-fold higher than that of site 1, and the density of D. antarctica tuft decreased significantly by 55.4% at site 2 for 3 years, but there was no significant change at site 1. Experimental results in growth chamber showed that the $H_2O_2$ and malondialdehyde content increased under root-flooding treatment (hypoxic conditions-deficiency of $O_2$), but any significant change was not perceptible under the shoot-flooding treatment (anoxic condition-absence of $O_2$). However, total chlorophyll, soluble sugar, protein content, and phenolic compound decreased under the shoot-flooding treatment. In addition, the catalase activity increased significantly on the 1st day of flooding. These results indicate that hypoxic conditions may lead to the overproduction of reactive oxygen species, and anoxic conditions can deplete primary metabolites such as sugars and protein in the leaf tissues of D. antarctica. Under present warming trend in Antarctic Peninsula, D. antarctica tuft growing near the shoreline might more frequently experience flooding due to glacier melting and inundation of seawater, which can enhance the risk of this plant mortality.

  • The catalytic steam reforming of toluene, a major component of biomass tar, was studied using several catalysts at various temperatures $400-800^{\circ}C$, kind of metal, and metal loading content. Ru and K promoted Ni-base catalyst were prepared, and used for steam reforming of toluene with steam/toluene molar ratio of 25. Concentration of toluene in reactant flow is $30g/Nm^3$ that is usual content of tar from biomass gasifier. The result from experiments showed that $H_2$ content in product gas and toluene conversion increased with temperature. Where in high temperature range, CO and $CO_2$ content in product gas were affected mainly by Boudouard reaction. Ni/Ru-K(3wt%)/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst showed best performance on steam reforming of toluene than used catalysts in this study at whole temperature. Catalysts have been characterized by XRD, TG. XRD analysis displayed that Ni particle size on Ni/Ru-K (3wt%)/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst was 29.4nm. Activation energy of Ni/Ru-K (3wt%)/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst was calculated 36.8kJ/mol by Arrhenius plot.

  • This study examined the antimicrobial activity of flaxseed meal extract (FME) against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli O157:H7 inoculated on red mustard. With the treatment of 0.7% FME for 3 min, the reduction levels of S. aureus and E. coli O157:H7 populations were 1.23 and 1.83 log CFU/g, respectively. In addition, the combined treatment of 0.7% FME at $50^{\circ}C$ for 3 min reduced the populations of the pathogenic bacteria by 2.28 and 2.41 log CFU/g, respectively. The color and the vitamin C content were not significantly different between treatments. Thus, FME can be used as a novel antimicrobial agent in fresh-cut vegetables.

  • The effects of anthracite and bituminous fly ash application on rice yield were investigated and the available silicate in paddy soil with ash application was analyzed. The obtained results are as follow : The yield of rice gradually decreased as the amount of anthracite ash increased. On the contrary, the rice yield gradually increased as the amount of bituminous ash increased. At harvesting stage the chemical properties in soil such as pH, organic content, and inorganic content($P_2O_5$, K. Ca, Mg and available $SiO_2$) were higher in bituminous ash treated soil than in anthracite treated soil. The amount of inorganic components in rice plant such as T-N, $P_2O_5$, $K_2O$, CaO, and MgO gradually decreased with the growing stage of rice. However, the amount of available silicate increased with the growing stage of rice. The silicate content in soil was determined by two different methods ; 1N-NaOAc extracted method and submerging setting method. In bituminous ash treated soil, the correlation between the silicate content in plant and in soil was found when the silicate content in soil was determined by the soil submerging method. In anthracite ash treated soil, however no correlation was found between the silicate content in plant and in soil determined by either method.
