  • In this research, in order to improve the heat retention of greenhouse, comparative analysis of the heat flux of the marketed multi-later insulating curtain was carried out. Experiments is conducted by fabricating a test apparatus for investigating the heat flux characteristics. The multi-later insulating curtain used for the experiment was compared using the P, N, S, U and T company, which are commercially available, and the heat flux due to temperature difference between the experimental apparatus and the outside was compared and analyzed. When the internal temperature of the experimental result is the maximum temperature $60^{\circ}C$, the heat flux of multi-later insulating curtain is T Co.($73.1W/m^2$) > S Co.($119.5W/m^2$) > U Co.($155W/m^2$) > N Co.($163.1W/m^2$) > P Co.($177.7W/m^2$). The heat flux means the quantity of heat passing through the unit time per unit area, and the higher the numerical value, the higher the quantity of heat passing through the multi-layer insulating curtain. This can be determined that high heat fluxes produce low heat resistance. Further, it has been found that the weight of the insulating curtain is largely unrelated to the heat insulating property, and the heat insulating curtain having a thickness containing a high internal air layer is excellent in the heat insulating property. In the future when manufacturing a heat insulating curtain, It is judged that it is desirable to manufacture a combination of heat insulating materials that contain a high internal air layer content and that can maintain the air layer even for long-term use while minimizing the volume.

  • A severe ginseng root rot disease was occurred and became widespraed in 1973 affecting the ginseng cultivating plot around Kangwha and Gimpo-Gun of Kyunggi province. Soil samples were collected from the area of Wolgot-Myun, Gimpo-Gun, Kuunggi-Do, 1974. We examined general fungi and Fusarium sp. in soil layers and also in different kinds of soil of respective diseased, uncultivated and healthy areas, and found the following results. 1. In the diseased and uncultivated area, the content of moisture, organic matter and silt was greater than in the healthy area. 2. Contray to the above, the healthy area contained a greater amount of inorganic elements such as $P_2O_5$, K,Ca and of soil particle such as Cs and Fs. The degree of pH and content of Mg were even in the three types of soils. 3. General fungi were found in abundance in the diseased and uncultivated soils. It was observed that in all types of areas, general fungi reside in abundance in the rhizosphere, i.e., 10-15cm layers and that the closer the surface, the greater the numbers of fungi. 4. A great number of Fusarium sp. was found in the uncultivated area, and followed diseased and healthy areas. It was observed that in all types of areas, Fusarium sp. distributed in abundance in rhizosphere and that the closer the surface, the greater the numbers of Fusarium sp., with the numbers decreasing as the soil layers increase.

  • To assess functional properties of chungkugjang (CK), a traditional Korean soyfood, fermented with black beans at $42^{\circ}C$ for 72 hrs, some biological activities of methanol extract of CK and the changes in phytoesterogen (daidzein, genistein) contents during fermentation were investigated. The methanol extract of CK (MEC) prepared with soybean had no or a little antibacterial activity. MEC prepared with black bean inhibited the growth of all bacteria tested, and MEC of small black bean was higher in antibacterial activity than that of large black bean. Hydrogen-donating activities of MEC of large and small black bean were 76.4 and 75.5%, respectively, which were higher than that of soybean being 67.3%. Nitrite-scavenging activity was found to be above 90% in all MECs tested as compared with control group. MEC showed strong antioxidant activities against both peroxidation of linoleic acid and $H_{2}O_{2}-FeSO_{4}-induced$ peroxidation of rat liver homogenate. The antioxidant activities were high in the order of small black bean, large black bean and soybean. Contents of genistein and daidzein were gradually increased during fermentation of CK. The isoflavones were higher in black bean CK than in soybean CK and higher in large black bean CK than in small black bean CK. In black beans genistein content was about twice as much of daidzein.

  • The rate constants for solvated electrons with benzene in the binary mixture (tetrahydrofuran-water) were measured at a various temperatures$(-18{\circ}C{\sim}+51{\circ}C)$ by photolysis. From Arrhenius plots of rate constants it was observed that the activation energies were decreased with increasing tetrahydrofuran(THF) content. Decreasing the viscosity of solvent mixtures by adding water, the rate constants were also decreased. It indicates that the reaction of solvated electrons are not controlled by diffusion. The change of activation enthalpy in kcal $M^{-1}$ and the rate constants in$ M^{-1}sec^{-1}$ were 4.90 and $8.80{\times}10^8$ for 30M% of THF, 2.80 and $5.14{\times}10^8$ for 49M% of THF, and -0.30 and %1.43{\times}10^8$ for 75M% of THF, respectively. The slope of the linear plot of activation enthalpies against activation entropies was $244{\circ}K$, which supports the reaction parameter is the change of activation entropy in the range of the experimental temperature. From the solvent effect on the activation energy, it was found that the step of the reaction, ${e_s}^-+B{\rightleftharpoons}B^-$ shifted to the exothermic reaction with increasing THF content.

  • This study was conducted to select native ground cover plants for sod culture in an organic apple orchard by estimating the effect of three native ground cover plants, Glechoma hederacea, Thymus magnus, and Ixeris stolonifera, on the soil coverage, time-periodic weed occurrence, fruit characteristics, and soil chemical properties. The plant height of G. hederace, T. magnus and I. stolonifera were 15.0 ㎝, 13.4 ㎝ and 7.2 ㎝, respectively. The dry weight of G. hederace, T. magnus and I. stolonifera were 463 ㎏/10a, 247 ㎏/10a, and 255 ㎏/10a, respectively. The plant height and dry weight of G. hederacea were higher than in the other species. T. magnus and I. stolonifera having relatively lower soil cover rate during their life cycle produced a lot of weeds in the orchard as compared with the control. In contrast, G. hederacea showed 100 percentage of ground cover in the first year, and maintained high percentage of ground cover in the growing season of ‘Tsugaru’ apple for another 2 years. When the soil was covered with G. hederacea in the orchard for 3 years, the amount of weed was only 114 ㎏/10a and number of weeding was also reduced about 33% compared with control as well as the other species. There were no differences in the tree growth and fruit characteristics between the native ground cover plants and the control; however, positive effects of native ground cover plants on soil chemical properties were found. In G. hederacea, available P2O4content in soils remarkably increased and was a significant difference among native species. In addition, cation (Ca, Mg and K) content in soils increased by 39% in Ca, 6% in Mg, and 11% in K at G. hederacea compared with control. These results suggest that G. hederacea could be advantageous in terms of reducing the amount of herbicide applied and the labor required for weed control, and controlling soil chemical properties; therefore, it is a good candidate for sod culture in an organic apple orchard.

  • Characterstics, genesis and classification of soils derived from coarse grain granitic materials were discussed with four soil series, such as Samgag, Sangju. Sachon and Yecheon which were distributed over the area of Gangdae-Ri, Nengseo-Myeon, Yeoju-Gun, Gyunggi-Do. The results are as follows. 1. Samgag, Sangju, Sachon and Yecheon had a soil of excessively, well, imperfectly and poorly drained, thus they had a soil drainage sequence. 2. Soil textural class were from sandy loam to loam. Silt and clay content were increased with descending to the local bottom, while sand content was decreased. 3. Soils were very strongly to strongly acid and OM, CEC, exchangeable cation, and available $P_2O_5$ in soils seemed to be increased with ascending to the local boctom. 4. Kaolinite and Quartz were the dominant clay mineral and the other was Vermiculite and Illite. 5. Samgag was classified as Typic Dystrochrepts, Sangju as Dystric-Fluventic Eutrochrepts, Sachon as Aeric-Fluventic Halpaquepts, and Yecheon as Fluventic Haplaquepts.

  • The effect of aeration process in causing changes in the prosapogenin content and the antioxidant activity of red ginseng powder extracts was investigated. With respect to the color change of the extracts, the L-value and b-value decreased significantly with the lapse of extraction time both with and without the aeration process. The a-value increased with the lapse of the extraction time in the non-aeration process but decreased in the aeration process. This result suggests that when the aeration process was performed, the lightness, yellowness, and redness decreased with the lapse of the extraction time, resulting in a darker color. The total polyphenolic and total flavonoid contents were the highest at 0.84 and 0.96 mg Gallic Acid Equivalent (GAE)/mL, 21.77 and 21.93 mg GAE/mL at 24 h and 36 h, respectively for the aerated red ginseng powder extracts. The DPPH, ABTS, H2O2 scavenging activity, and reducing power were measured to confirm the antioxidant effects of red ginseng powder extracts after the aeration process. Thus, the antioxidant activity was increased in the aerated red ginseng powder extracts. In addition, when comparing the contents of Rb1, Rg1, and Rg3, the content of Rg3 was significantly different, and it was confirmed that a large amount was produced in the aerated red ginseng extracts. These results indicate that the red ginseng extracts subjected to the aeration process are superior than the ones processed by the non-aeration process.

  • A field experiment was conducted on a soil where habitual zinc deficiency has been observed, to investigate the effectiveness of two forms of zinc containing fertilizers: zinc enriched fused phosphate and zinc enriched compound fertilizer. The result of present study is summarized as following. 1. The sail used for the study contained relatively large amount of 1N $CH_2COONH_4$ extractable Ca and the pH was 7.03. Available Zn extracted by 0.1 HCl and available $SiO_2$ extracted by NaOAc were 3.35 ppm and 67.7 ppm respectively. 2. In control plots Zinc content of rice plant measured at 20 days after transplanting was 22-23 ppm, which was a little higher than the critical level (20ppm). But at harvesting stage it dropped to 15ppm. 3. The ratios of $P_2O_5/Zn$ and N/Zn tended to lower as the zinc applied to the soil increased. 4. Application of Zinc clearly increased the number of tillers and plant height as compared to the control. It was also observed that the plots received znic headed and matured earlier compared to the control plots by two weeks. 5. Application of zinc increased all of the yield components and the yield of rice. However, there were no statistical differences in yield and yield components among the forms and levels of zinc fertilizers.

  • This study was conducted to clarify the effects of supplying methods of selenium on the growth and Se uptake of hydroponically grown tomato plants. Tomato seeds (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill. cv. Momotaro T-93, Daki Seed Co.) were sown in plug tray with fifty holes, and raised for sixty days. Tomato seedlings transplanted to coco fiber slabs were supplied with the nutrient solutions adjusted to EC $2.3dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ and pH $5.8\~6.2$ recommended by the Japanese Horticultural Experiment Station. Selenium forms used were inorganic $SeO_2$ (here in after referred to Se) and organic selenium chlenium with sugar fatty acid ester (here in after referred to chelated-Se). 10 ppm selenium solutions were treated to tomato plants with foliar applications, drenching, and foliar application plus drenching. Growth characteristics in terms of plant height, number of leaves, leaf area and chlorophyll content were significantly increased in the plot of foliar application ot Se, and in the plot of foliar application plus drenching of chelated-Se than other plots, respectively. Transported contents of selenium into the tomato fruits were highest as 0.302 ppm in the plot of foliar application plus drenching of chelated-Se. Also, it had tended to be higher in the plot of foliar application plus drenching than in the plots of foliar application or drenching in both of Se and chelated-Se. Foliar application and drenching of organic chelated-Se were effective to produce the functional tomato fruits.

  • Seven box cores from the disposal areas located in the southern part of the East Sea (Stations Band B') and in the offshore to the east of Pusan (Stations J and J'), and from their surrounding areas (Stations J2, J6 and H) were collected to investigate the effect of dumped wastes on the foraminiferal assemblages. The species diversity indices [S, H(S), E] of foraminifera and the total number of foraminifera show significant differences between the ocean waste disposal areas and their adjacent areas. Ocean waste disposal areas located in southern part of the East Sea (Stations Band B') show not only smaller number of foraminifera species but also lower values of coarse fraction content in the sediment and the number of benthic and planktonic foraminifera than the surrounding areas. Another ocean disposal area located offshore Pusan (Station J') contains abnormally greater number of planktonic (approximately 300 000 individuals/lO g dried sediment) and benthic (approximately 300, 000 individuals/10 g dried sediment) foraminifera compared to those of the adjacent areas. The waste dumped at Station J' probably acts as a nutrient causing the greater number of foraminifera. Station J shows low species diversity indices [S, H(S)]. The number of benthic foraminifera decreases from the surface to the downcore at Station J, which indicates that Station J is under stress. However, Stations J', J2 and J6 are under stable conditions as evidenced by the greater species diversity indices [S, H(S)] compared to other stations. No foraminifera were found with biological disease or abnormal chambers, which commonly occur in extremely stressed environment, in both the ocean disposal and adjacent areas. The organic matter decay of the wastes dumped in the study areas has not made the bottom water corrosive.
