This study was initiated to investigate the effects of organic germanium on cadmium and mercury intoxication. The effect was determined by the metallothionein induction in liver and kidney. Male rats (Sprague-Dawley) were treated with CdCI$_{2}$ (2mg/kg), HgCI$_{2}$ (1 mg/kg) and organic germanium (GE-132) (100 mg/kg) in single and in combination via intraperitoneal injection or intragastric administration every other days for 17 days. Experimental animals were sacrificed after 7, 12 and 17 days treatment. The serum transaminase activities (SGOT, SGPT), concentration of metal and metallothionein, metal-binding capacity of metallothionein in liver and kidney were determined and pathomorphological observations were undertaken. The combined treatment of GE-132 and CdCI$_{2}$ significantly decreased the increment of serum transaminase activities in rats treated with CdCI$_{2}$ only, but the combined treatment of GE-132 and HgCI$_{2}$ did not affect to activities of transaminases induced by mercury only. The concentration of metals (Cd and Hg) except Ge in the liver and kidney of rats increased with the time of treatment. Mercury concentration in kidney of rat treated with HgCI$_{2}$ only was significantly higher than the combined treatment of GE-132 and HgCI$_{2}$. The combined treatment of GE-132 and CdCI$_{2}$ significantly increased the concentration of metallothionein in liver compared to the CdCI$_{2}$ only, although the concentration of cadmium in liver were not significantly different between two groups. This indicates that GE-132 decreased toxicity of cadmium in liver by promoting metallothionein induction. There were no significant differences in metallothionein concentration in liver and kidney of rats between the combined treatment of GE-132 and HgCI$_{2}$ and HgCI$_{2}$ only. Metal-binding capacity of metallothionein varied with each time intervals in liver and kidney of metals treated rats except the liver of the combined treatment of GE-132 and CdCI$_{2}$. This finding explains the concentration of metallothionein in liver keeps abreast with the concention of metal. Furthermore, the combined treatment of GE-132and CdCl$_{2}$ revealed pathologically less changes in liver tissue than CdCl$_{2}$ only; the damages of liver cell, such as lobular necrosis and portal inflammation, were relieved and appeared more later. From the above results, organic germanium is considered to have some beneficial effect on the protection of liver from the cadmium intoxication.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of Germaniwn(Ge) treatment in the culture media on the Ge absorption by the callus induced from brown rice cv. Dongjinbyeo. MS medium was more effective on the growth ratio of callus and the content of Ge and some inorganic elements except K in callus than N$_{6}$ medium. The more Ge treatment in the N$_{6}$ or MS medium, the more Ge absorption by the callus, but the growth ratio of callus and the content of Ca, Mg, and K in callus were decreased. The content of Fe, Mn, Zn, and Cu was increased under treatment up to 100~200mg /$\ell$ Ge, but tended to be decreased under treatment more than that of Ge concentration. Under treatment less than 150mg /$\ell$ Ge, GeO$_2$(inorganic Ge) was more effective on the Ge absorption by callus than Ge-132(organic Ge), but Ge-132 was more effective on the Ge ab-sorption by callus and the activity of callus in case of treatment more than 150mg /$\ell$ Ge. The lower pH of culture medium, the higher Ge content in the callus. When callus was cultured on medium supplemented with Ge and 0.1~1.0mM of citric acid or myo-inositol, content of Ge and some inorganic elements in callus, as well as growth and dry weight of callus, were tend to increase in comparison to control, but myo-inositol was more effective on them than citric acid.cid.
Changes in pH, titratable acidity, CO$_2$production, reducing sugar, and lactic acid bacteria of fresh kimchi juice supplemented with combinations of 3 lactic acid bacteria and germanium(Ge)-132 or fructooligosaccharide(FO) during fermentation at 30$^{\circ}C$ were investigated to assess the potential for extending the shelf life and enhancing the functional properties in kimchi. In kimchi juice containing Ge-132, sample(I) (inoculated with a mixture of bacteriocin-producing SNF-13 strain and E. faecium) exhibited that the amounts of organic acid and evolved CO$_2$gas were lower than those of the other starter samples(II-IV). The growth of lactic acid bacteria naturally present in kimchi juice, particularly Lb. plantarum and Leu. mesentroides, may be inhibited due to competition of the isolated SNF-13 strain and E. faecium by Ge-132. During fermentation of kimchi juice containing FO sugar, the contents of organic acid and evolved CO$_2$gas On juice broth with 4 starters were predominantly higher than those of control and Ge-132 groups, and then the growth of lactic acid bacteria originated from kimchi ingredients was thought to be markedly accelerated. Our results indicated that functional properties like the extension of shelf life and increase of biological activity in kimchi were enhanced by adding Ge-132 and bacterium-producing lactic acid bacterium, which were resistant to organic acid and stimulated by Ge-132.
In order to cultivate the soybean sprout fortified with organogermanium, we observed growth characteristics and germanium content of soybean sprout watered with the aqueous organogermanium, Ge-132[bis(2-Carboxyethylgermanium sesquioxide)]. Soybean sprout did not show difference in growth when treated with different times and frequencies of organogermanium or different types of germanium. Growth of Orialtae soybean sprout was smaller in diameter of hypocotyledonary axis and longer in total length than that of Danyeob soybean sprout. Three hour's soaking was better in growth than half an boar's treatment. Germanium absorbed by soybean sprout was greater in content in Danyeob soybean sprout than in Orialtae soybean sprout and highest at 20 ppm in water. Prolonged period and increased frequency in treatments with organic germanium resulted in increase of germanium uptake. Germanium content in soybean sprout was greater with treatment of organic germanium than with inorganic germanium.
Amorphous semiconducting diodes from As Te Ge systm of which resitivity are 10$^{6}$ -10$^{8}$ .ohm.-cm order, are made and they exhibited several conducting states. A high conductivity, low conductivity and memory state are reported. Temperature dependency of the specimens are widerange. According to the procedure and cooling method, specimens are made easily or not. Threshold voltage of switching and memory diodes is in proportional to compositonal quantity of Arsenic. Threshold voltage is changed widely according to ambient temperature. Threshold voltage of #132 is 620V at 25.deg. C, 70V at 100.deg. C.
Bloods from slaughtered Korean native cattle (Hanwoo : Bos taurus coreanae) can be used in agriculture with various beneficial effects on the environment. This study was performed to find out the effect of the application of calcium and germanium, which are chelated with peptides made of cattle bloods on the absorption of them by cherry tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.). Peptide was purified by enzymatic hydrolysis and ultrafiltration from serum protein, which is composed of Asp, Glu, Lue etc. Chelated Ca and Ge were produced by reacting the peptide with $CaCl_2$ and Ge-$132^{(R)}$. Then, they were applied to cherry tomato during cultivation period at the rate of $300mL{\times}3times$ (10 days interval) for each tomato tree. Application of chelated-Ca increased the Ca contents in leaves and fruits of cherry tomato showing as 19.9% and 23.4% in newerly prepared chelated-Ca-200 ($200mg\;L^{-1}$), 8.1% and 6.8% in commecrial Calciolid Ca-300 ($300mg\;L^{-1}$) compared to 3152.6 and $63.2mg\;kg^{-1}$ in control, respectively. Application of chelated-Ge showed the increase in the germanium contents in both leaves and fruits of cherry tomato by over 6 times than those of control and over 4 times than Ge $132^{(R)}$-20 application. As a result of this study, it seemed that the application of chelated-Ca and chelated-Ge would be more effective than the existing commertial one in the absorption of calcium and germanium by cherry tomato.

The present study was conducted to determine the effects of bis-carboxyethyl germanium sesquioxide(Ge-132) and caffeic acid phenethyl ester(CAPE) on immune system in female BALB/c mice. The mice were orally exposed continuously to Ge-132 (0, 50, 100, or 200mg/kg), or CAPE (0, 5. 10, or 20mg/kg) for 14 days. Immunomodulatory activity was evaluated by assessment of body and organ weight, lymphocytes blastogenesis, (omitted)
The application of TEM in investigating the evolution of microstructure during solid phase crystallization of the amorphous Si, $Si_{1-x}Ge_x,\;and\;Si_{1-x}Ge_x/Si$ films deposited on $SiO_2$ substrate, in identifying the failure mechanism of the TiN barrier layer in the Cu-metallization scheme, and in comparing the microstructure of the as-deposited Cu-Cr and Cu-Ti alloy films are discussed. First, it is identified that the evolution of microstructure in Si and $Si_{1-x}Ge_x$ alloy films strongly depends on the concentration of Ge in the film. Second, the failure mechanism of the TiN diffusion barrier in the Cu-metallization is the migration of the Cu into the Si substrate, which results in the formation of a dislocation along the Si {111} plane and precipitates (presumably $Cu_{3}Si$) around the dislocation. Finally, the microstructure of the as-deposited Cu-Cr and Cu-Ti alloy films is also quite different in these two cases. From these several cases, we demonstrate that the information which we obtained using TEM is critical in understanding the behavior of materials.
To investigate effects of inorganic $(GeO_2)$ and organic (Ge-132) germanium (Ge) on seed germination and on early stage growth of plane and the uptake characteristics, various concentrations (0, 10, 25, 50, 100 mg $L^{-1}$) of Ge to popular vegetables such as leaf mustard, chinese cabbage and pak-choi, respectively, were treated. On seed germination, no significant effect was observed in both inorganic and organic Ge treatments except 100 mg $L^{-1}$ treatment of inorganic Ge. Exogenous inorganic Ge ($10{\sim}100$ mg $L^{-1}$ treatments significantly inhibited the early root elongation growth of all plants. However, slight enhancement of early shoot elongation was detected in low concentrations (10 and 25 mg $L^{-1}$) of Ge in the leaf mustard and chinese cabbage plants. Organic Ge treatments significantly stimulated the 개ot and shoot growth at the 10, 25 and 50 mg $L^{-1}$ treatments. Ge was accumulated linearly in the vegetables as both inorganic and organic Ge concentrations were increased. Interestingly, total contents of Ge in plants with Ge-132 treatments were $2\sim4.5$ times more than those with inorganic Ge treatments in all concentrations. At 25 mg $L^{-1}$ treatment of Ge, contents of Ge in vegetables are following: in leaf mustard, inorganic Ge: 0.37 mg $g^{-1}dw$ and organic Ge: 1.47 mg $g^{-1}dw;$ in the chinese cabbage, inorganic Ge: 0.4 mg $g^{-1}dw$ and organic Ge: 0.86 mg $g^{-1}dw;$ in the pak-choi, inorganic Ge: 0.33 mg $g^{-1}dw$ and organic Ge: 0.70 mg $g^{-1}dw$, respectively. These results showed organic Ge is much better on early stage seedling growth and on germanium accumulation of vegetables than inorganic Ge.
