Structural and Magnetic Properties of the Substituted YIG System (치환된 YIG계의 구조적 및 자기적 특성)

  • The substituted yttrium iron garnet systems $Y_{ 3-x}$/Gd$_{x}$X$0.2_{0.2}$ $Fe_{4.8}$ $O _{12}$ (x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6) have been investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy and SQUID. The X-ray diffraction patterns at room temperature confirm the samples to have a single phase of the garnet structure over the whole composition range. The lattice constants of all the samples linearly change with increasing x due to the size of substituted ions in the dodecahedral sites. $Y_{3-x}$ $Gd_{x}$ X$Fe_{4.8}$ $In_{0.2}$ $O_{12}$ system which $Y_{3-x}$ ions are substituted with Gd$^{ 3+}$ ions, the Mossbauer spectrum consists of three Zeeman sextets at room temperature, one due to the $Fe^{3+}$ ions on the octahedral(a-) sites and the others due to the $Fe^{3+}$ ions on the tetrahedral(d-, d'-) sites, respectively. From the hysteresis loop measured by means of SQUID over the whole composition range, the saturation magnetization $M_{s}$ and magnetic moments $\mu_{ B}$ per unit cell have been obtained. The increment of Gd-ion content causes $M_{s}$ and $\mu_{B}$ decrease while the increment of In-ion content does not.

  • Macroacyclic transition metal complexes such as $Cu(H_2L[A]).H_2O$, $Cu(H_2L[B]).H_2O$, CuFe(L[A]($NO_3$).$4H_2O$, CuFe(L[B])($NO_3$).$4H_2O$, [$CuGd(H_2L[A])(NO_3)_2](NO_3).2CH_3OH$, [CuGd($H_2L$[B])($NO_3)_2$]($NO_3).2CH_3OH were prepared from the corresponding hexadentate compartmental ligands, $H_4L[A]$ and $H_4L[B]$, which were obtained by the condensation of 2-hydroxy-3-hydroxymethy1-5-methyIbenzaldehyde(HHNNB) and ethylenediamine or l,3-diaminopropane. Ln-macrocyclic([20]DOTA) complexes,[Ln([20]DOTA)($NO_3)(H_2O)$]($NO_3$)2.$xH_2O${Ln(III)=Pr, Sm, Gd, Dy, which had been synthesized from 2,6-diformyl-p-cresol(DFPC), was placed in methanol for 2 days, and [Ln([20] DOTA)($NO_3)(CH_3OH)]^{2+}$ was formed The equilibrium constants (k) for the substitution of coordinated $CH_3OH$ in the Ln-[20]DOTA complexes by various bidentate auxiliary ligands, $L_a$(=o-phenylenediamine,1,10-phenanthroline, ethylenediamine,oxalicacid, malonic acid, acethylacetone) were determined by spectroscopic method at $25^{\circ}C$ and 0.1M $NaClO_4$.The pKa of auxiliary ligands is in the order of o-phenylenediamine < 1,10-phenanthroline < ethylene-diamine, oxalic acid < malonic acid < acethylacetone. However, the equilibrium constant(K) has shown thetrend of ethyleneiamine < 1,10-phenanthroline < o-phenylenediamine, acethylacetone < malonic acid < oxalic acid.

Mossbauer Studies of Perovskite $Gd_{1-x}Sr_xFeO_{3-y}$ (X = 0.0, 0.5) (Perovskite $Gd_{1-x}Sr_xFeO_{3-y}$ (X = 0.0, 0.5)의 Mossbauer연구)

  • Crystallographic and magnetic properties of perovskite $Gd_{1-x}Sr_xFeO_{3-y}$ (x=0.0, 0.5) substituted $Sr^{2+}$ having larger inoic radius than $Gd^{3+}$ at GdFeO$_3$have been studied by x-ary diffraction, M$\ "{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy, and VSM. The cystal structures are found to be orthorhombic with the lattice parameters : $a_o=5.53\;{\AA},\;b_o=5.608\;{AA},\;C_o=7.724\;{\AA}$ for $Gd_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}FeO_{3-y}$ (x=0.0, 0.5) have been investigated over temperature range from 4.2 to 690 K using the M$\ "{o}$ssbauer technique. The Neel temperatuer of $Gd_{1-x}Sr_xFeO_{3-y}$ system is 690 K with x value of 0.0 and 515 K with x value of 0.5. Analysis of M$\ "{o}$ssbauer spectra Mohr's salt analysis for $Gd_{1-x}Sr_xFeO_{3-y}$ demonstrated the existence of the mixed valence states of iron and the coordination state of $Fe^{3+}$ and $Fe^{4+}$ ions. The Corresponding hyperfine parameters for GdFeO$_3$ are compatible with S=5/2 $Fe^{3+}$ in octahedral cooedination.l cooedination.

Phase Evolution and Thermal Conductivities of (La1-xGdx)2Zr2O7 Oxides for Thermal Barrier Coatings (열차폐코팅용 (La1-xGdx)2Zr2O7 산화물의 상형성과 열전도도)

  • With increase in operating temperature of gas turbine for higher efficiency, it is necessary to find new materials of TBC for replacement of YSZ. Among candidate materials for future TBCs, zirconate-based oxides with pyrochlore and fluorite are prevailing ones. In this study, phase structure and thermal conductivities of $(La_{1-x}Gd_x)_2Zr_2O_7$ oxide system are investigated. $(La_{1-x}Gd_x)_2Zr_2O_7$ system are comprised by selecting $La^{3+}/Gd^{3+}$ as A-site ions and $Zr^{4+}$ as B-site ion in $A_2B_2O_7$ pyrochlore structures. With powder mixture from each oxide, $(La_{1-x}Gd_x)_2Zr_2O_7$ oxides are fabricated via solid-state reaction at $1600^{\circ}C$. Either pyrochlore or fluorite or mixture of both appears after heat treatment. For the developed phases along $(La_{1-x}Gd_x)_2Zr_2O_7$ compositions, thermal conductivities are examined, with which the potential of $(La_{1-x}Gd_x)_2Zr_2O_7$ compositions for TBC application is also discussed.

Differential Expression Patterns of Gangliosides in the Liver and Heart of NIH-miniature Pigs (NIH-미니돼지의 간과 심장에서 갱글리오시드의 서로 다른 발현 패턴)

  • Gangliosides are a major component of the plasma membrane of mammalian cells, which are directly involved in a variety of immunological events, including cell-to cell or cell-to-protein interactions. In this study, we investigated whether gangliosides, sialic acid-containing glycosphingolipids, are related to rejection during the xenotransplantation of NIH-miniature pig livers and hearts to humans. Both high performance thin-layer chromatography and immunohistochemistry analyses revealed that the expression of gangliosides in the liver tissue of NIH-miniature pigs was higher than that in the heart. Gangliosides GD3, GD1a, GD1b, GT1b and GQ1b were observed in both the liver and heart, whereas GQ1b was detected only in the liver, indicating that the ganglioside expression profiles are tissue specific. Moreover, other ganglio-series gangliosides, including GM3, were not detected in the livers and hearts of NIH-miniature pigs. Taken together, these results suggest that gangliosides may play important roles in immune responses in clinical xenotransplants of pig livers and hearts.

High Functional $GdB_2C_3O_{7-x}$ Thin Films Fabricated by Pulsed Laser Deposition

  • REBCO coated conductors (RE: rare earth elements) have recently drawn great attention since they are known to possess stronger flux pinning centers in high magnetic fields compared with YBCO coated conductors. In this study, $GdBa_2Cu_3O_{7-d}(GdBCO)$ was selected to investigate the influence of the distance between target and substrate and substrate temperature on the superconducting properties of GdBCO films on the $SrTiO_3(100)$ substrate. Samples were fabricated by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) with a Nd:YAG laser (355nm). Under a given oxygen pressure of 800mTorr, we changed the distance between target and substrate from 5.5cm to 7.0cm and the substrate temperature from $750^{\circ}C\;to\;850^{\circ}C$. The crystallinity and texture of GdBCO films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the surface morphology was observed by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Tc and Jc values were measured by the four point probe method. High quality GdBCO films with Tc of 89.7K and Jc over $1MA/cm^2$ at 77 K in self field were successfully fabricated by optimizing processing parameters. The detailed processing conditions, microstructure and superconducting properties will be presented for a discussion.

Synthesis of (Gd0.74Y0.11Tb0.15P1.15)OδPhosphors Using Combinatorial Chemistry (조합화학을 이용한 (Gd0.74Y0.11Tb0.15P1.15)Oδ 형광체 합성 및 발광특성)

  • Recently developed Plasma Display Panels (PDP) require phosphors of high luminance at Vacuum Ultraviolet (VUV) excitation. The present investigation developed new PDP phosphors using combinatorial chemistry method. We applied T $b^{3+}$ -activated yttrium gadolinium phosphates system to our combinatorial fine-tuning technique. As a result, the optimum composition was determined to be (G $d_{0.74}$ $Y_{0.11}$T $b_{0.15}$) $P_{1.15}$ $O_{\delta}$ through the two-step combinatorial screening process including excess phosphorous and Gd replacement. We found that the sample of the optimum composition shows a higher luminescence efficiency at VUV excitation and a shorter decay time than the commercially available Z $n_2$ $SiO_4$:Mn phosphor.

Corrosion and mechanical properties of hot-rolled 0.5%Gd-0.8%B-stainless steels in a simulated nuclear waste treatment solution

  • Corrosion and mechanical behavior of the hot-rolled 0.5%Gd-0.8%B-stainless steel to develop a spent nuclear fuel storage material was studied in a simulated nuclear waste treatment condition with rolling condition. The austenite and ferrite phases of the 0.5%Gd-0.8%B-stainless steels are about 88:12. The average austenite and ferrite grain size of the plane normal to rolling, transverse and normal directions of the hot rolled specimens are about 5.08, 8.94, 19.35, 23.29, 26.00 and 18.11 [${\mu}m$], respectively. The average micro-hardness of the as-cast specimen is 200.4 Hv, whereas, that of the hot-rolled specimen are 220.1, 204.7 and 203.5 [$H_v$] for the plane normal to RD, TD and ND, respectively. The UTS, YS and elongation of the as-cast and the hot-rolled specimen are 699, 484 [MPa], 34.0%, and 654, 432 [MPa] and 33.3%, respectively. The passivity was observed both for the as-cast and the hot rolled specimens in a simulated nuclear waste solution. The corrosion potential and corrosion rate of the as-casted specimens are $-343[mV_{SHE}]$ and $3.26{\times}10^{-7}[A/cm^2]$, whereas, those of the hot rolled specimens with normal to ND, RD and TD are -630, -512 and -620 [$mV_{SHE}$] and $6.12{\times}10^{-7}$, $1.04{\times}10^{-6}$ and $6.92{\times}10^{-7}[A/cm^2]$, respectively. Corrosion tends to occur preferentially Cr and B rich area.

  • In order to elucidate the optimum medium on the growth and tropane alkaloid production of hairy root, hairy root were induced by inoculating leaf and stem of Datura stramonium var. tatula Torr. with Agrobacterium spp. Both Agrobacterium tumefaciens $\textrm{A}_{4}$ T and A, rhizogenes ATCC 15834 among tested strains were effective on hairy root formation. Among 23 clones selected in SH (Schenk and Hildebrandt, 1972) liquid medium, DTLA9 clone was shown fast growth of hairy root and DTLE6 clone was shown high level production of tropane alkaloids. When both DTLA9 and DTLE6 clones were cultured in the GD (Gresshoff and Doy, 1972) medium, alkaloid production was higher than in 8 tested media. It was elucidated that optimum medium for root proliferation and for tropane alkaloid production is SH, GD medium, respectively.

Crystal Chemistry and Dielectric Properties of $Bi_4Ti_3O_{12}$ by the Substitution of Rare Earth Elements (Y, Nd, Sm, Gd) (희토류원소(Y, Nd, Sm, Gd)의 치환에 의한 $Bi_4Ti_3O_{12}$의 결정화학 및 유전물성)

  • Bi4Ti3O12 (BIT) and its rare earth (Y, Nd, Sm, Gd)-substituted derivatives were synthesized using a sol-gel method to investigate their microstructures, cystal structures and electrical properties depending on the subsituted elemetns. Nd- or Sm-substitution into BIT appeared to be favorable, while Y- or Gd-substitution occurred with a pyrochlore phase. This suggests that a smaller trivalent rare earth ion may not be favorable in the structure of BIT. The rare earth derivatives showed that their particle sizes and shapes were considerably different depending on the kinds of substituted elements. Y-substitution resulted in developing a relatively even particle size and a dense microstructure. In structure, they may be similar to the pseudo-orthorhombic BIT but close to a paraelectric tetragonal phase. Their a (or b) axes were shortened, compared to the one of BIT. Such a distortion may result a decrease in the tilting of TiO6. BIT and the derivatives showed that their dielectric constants and losses were 40~120 and less than 0.03, respectively in the frequency range of 1~10 MHz. The dielectric loss of Y-substituted derivative was the lowest one and changed a little to frequency. Curie points were observed in all the derivatives like BIT to suggest that they would be ferroelectric. The temperature stability of the delectric properties of the derivatives below the Curie points were relatively better than the one of BIT.
