원예용 폐배지를 재활용한 혼합배지에서 페튜니아와 팬지 플러그묘의 생육 (Growth of Plug Seedlings of Petunia 'Madness Rose' and Pansy 'Magestic GT' in Various Mixtures of Recycled Horticultural Media)

  • 공정육묘장과 양액재배 농장에서 재배후 폐기되는 폐배지를 재활용한 배지를 개발하기 위하여 실험을 수행하였다. 공정육묘 폐배지와 양액재배 폐코이어, 그리고 펄라이트, 입상암면, 버미큘라이트를 여러 가지 부피비로 혼합한 배지에 페츄니아(Petunia hybrida) 'Madness Rose'와 팬지(Viola tricolor) 'Magestic GT'의 플러그묘를 각각 파종후 33일과 40일간 재배하였다. 육묘 폐배지와 양액재배 폐코이어는 $120^{\circ}C$ 1.5기압하에서 30분 동안 증기소독하였다. 대조구로는 미사용의 육묘배지[토실이 상토, pH 5.10, EC $0.12mS{\cdot}cm^{-1}$, 1:5 희석법, 신안그로(주)]를 사용하였다. 재배전 배지의 pH는 6~7로 처리간 차이가 적었고, 재배후의 pH도 재배전과 유사했다. EC는 폐배지가 들어간 처리에서 다소 높았고 폐코이어(75%)+버미큘라이트(25%) 처리에서도 높았으며 처리간 변화의 폭이 pH보다 컸다. 입상암면이나 펄라이트 혼합처리에서는 EC가 다소 낮았다. 폐코이어(75%)+펄라이트(25%)의 처리에서 페튜니아는 초장, 근형성, 지상부 건물중, 엽수가, 그리고 팬지는 초장, 생체중, 건물중, 지상부 생체중, 지상부 건물중이 가장 컸다. 폐배지보다 폐코이어가 혼합된 배지의 이화학성이 더 우수하였고 생육에서도 보다 좋은 결과를 나타냈다. 이상의 결과로부터 폐배지를 이용시에는 펄라이트나 입상암면을 혼합하는 것이 좋을 것으로 사료된다.

일본 소형 오징어 채낚기 어선의 톤수 및 집어등 광원 출력과 어획량과의 관계 (Relationship Between the Boat Sizes, tight Source Output for Fishing Lamps and the Catch of Squid, Todarodes pacificus STEENSTRUP, in Coastal Squid Jigging Fishery of Japan)

  • 일본 홋카이도 하코다테, 니이가타현 사도 ,이시카와현 노토마치 및 나가사키현쯔시마 지역에서 소형 오징어 채낚기 어선의 톤수와 집어등 광원 출력 및 각 어선의 일별 연간 어획량 자료를 수집하여, 어선의 톤수와 집어등 광원 출력이 단위 노력당 어획량에 미치는 영향에 대해서 검토하였다. 어선이 설비하고 있는 집어등 광원 출력은 어선의 톤수가 증가함에 따라 증가하는 경향을 보였다 어선의 집어등 광원 출력 계급별 어획량 및 어선의 톤수 계급별 어획량은 집어등 광원 출력과 어선의 톤수계급이 증가함에 따라 단위 노력당 어획량도 증가하였으며, 어선의 어획 효율은 11$\~$15톤급 어선이 100-200kw의 집어등 광원 출력 조건을 갖는 경우가 좋은 결과를 나타내었다. 이것은 소형 오징어 채낚기 어선의 경우, 집어등 광원 출력을 200kw, 어선의 톤수를 15톤까지 증가시키는 범위 내에서 어획 효율의 증가를 기대할 수 있다는 것을 의미한다. 이상의 소형 오징어 채낚기 어선의 톤수 $(GT) x_1$와 집어등 광원출력 (kW) x,이 단위 노력당 어획량 (box/machine/day) y에 미치고 있는 관계를 다중 회귀 정규 방정식을 이용하여 표현하면 다음과 같은 관계식으로 정리할 수 있다.

  • This study was undertaken to determine whether administration of a standardized gindeng extract at 300 mg.$d^1$ for 8 weeks could enhance maximum aerobic and anaerobic exercise capabilities and whether any changes of such effects can be occurred when exercise training was added. Forty-one male university students were randomly divided into four groups as ginseng-untrained (GU, n=10), ginseng-trained (GT, n=10), placebo-untrained (PU, n=10), and placebo-trained (PT, n=11). The trained groups underwent 8 weeks of aerobic exercise at 65% of individual's maximum oxygen consumption ($Vo_2$ max) for 30 min.$d^1$, 3d.$wk^1$. Prior to and at the end of experiment, $Vo_2$ max, anaerobic power (AP), anaerobic capacity (AC), and leg muscle strength were determined and some physiological parameters related to $Vo_2$ max were measured. Initially, all subject groups did not differ in average $Vo_2$ max (range 45.9 to 47.9 ml/.kg-1.min-1). After 8 weeks, the $Vo_2$ max increased significantly from the initial level by 12.6% in group GU, 14.5% in group PT, and 24.5% in group GU which was significantly higher than group GU but not group PT. Changes in all measured parameters related to $Vo_2$ max were similar among the subject groups except group PU. Both the AP and the AC were significantly increased in all subject groups (range +3.6 to +13.1% above initial for the AP and +4.4 to) 8.955 above initial for the AC) but the higher changes were found for the AP in groups PT and GU, and for the AC in grouts PT, when compared with group PU. No significant differences in the two anaerobic variables were observed between group GT and the other groups of subjects. Leg strength was also significantly enhanced over group PU in groups PT, GU and GT. There were no significant differences among the latter three subject groups. As a result of these findings, it was concluded that under the conditions of this study ginseng administration at the prescribed dose exhibited the training-like effects on $Vo_2$ max as well as anaerobic power and leg muscle strength but no clear synergistic action on these physical fitness variables occurred when both g inseng administration and exercise training were combined.

Survey on Nucleotide Encoding Techniques and SVM Kernel Design for Human Splice Site Prediction

  • Splice site prediction in DNA sequence is a basic search problem for finding exon/intron and intron/exon boundaries. Removing introns and then joining the exons together forms the mRNA sequence. These sequences are the input of the translation process. It is a necessary step in the central dogma of molecular biology. The main task of splice site prediction is to find out the exact GT and AG ended sequences. Then it identifies the true and false GT and AG ended sequences among those candidate sequences. In this paper, we survey research works on splice site prediction based on support vector machine (SVM). The basic difference between these research works is nucleotide encoding technique and SVM kernel selection. Some methods encode the DNA sequence in a sparse way whereas others encode in a probabilistic manner. The encoded sequences serve as input of SVM. The task of SVM is to classify them using its learning model. The accuracy of classification largely depends on the proper kernel selection for sequence data as well as a selection of kernel parameter. We observe each encoding technique and classify them according to their similarity. Then we discuss about kernel and their parameter selection. Our survey paper provides a basic understanding of encoding approaches and proper kernel selection of SVM for splice site prediction.

SOFC-GT 혼합시스템용 원심압축기 공력설계 및 유동특성 연구 (A Study on Aerodynamic Design and Flow Characteristics of a Centrifugal Compressor for SOFC-Gas Turbine Hybrid System)

  • This study presents an aerodynamic design and numerical analysis of a centrifugal compressor in gas turbines for SOFC-gas turbine hybrid system application. Total-to-total pressure ratio of the compressor is 3.6:1 that could be used widely for small and large SOFC-gas turbine systems. The compressor consists of a centrifugal impeller and a wedge diffuser. Conceptual design and aerodynamic design with mean line analysis and quasi-3D analysis are performed, and aerodynamic parameters as well as design variables are discussed from the design results. A numerical analysis based on the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation was performed for the flow analysis of the compressor. The results show that the centrifugal compressor designed meets the design target, and the aerodynamic parameters and results of the compressor can be used for the aerodynamic design of centrifugal compressors and the feasibility study of SOFC-gas turbine system design.

Nrf2 Knockout Mice that Lack Control of Drug Metabolizing and Antioxidant Enzyme Genes - Animals Highly Sensitive to Xenobiotic Toxicity

  • Xenobiotics and their reactive intermediates bind to cellular macromolecules and/or generate oxidative stress. which provoke deleterious effects on the cell function. Induction of xenobiotic-biotrans-forming enzymes and antioxidant molecules is an important defense mechanism against such insults. A group of genes involved in the defense mechanism. e.g. genes encoding glutathione S-transferases. NAD(P)H: quinone oxidoreductase, UDP-glucuronosyltransferase (UDP-GT) and ${\gamma}$-glutamylcysteine synthetase (GGCS). have a common regulatory sequence, Antioxidant or Electrophile Responsive Element (ARE/EpRE). Recently. Nrf2. discovered as a homologue of erythroid transcription factor p45 NF-E2, was shown to bind ARE/EpRE and induce the expression of these defense genes. Mice that lack Nrf2 show low basal levels of expression and/or impaired induction of these genes. which makes the animals highly sensitive to xenobiotic toxicity. Indeed. we show here that nrf2-deficient mice had a higher mortality than did the wild-type mice when exposed to acetaminophen (APAP). Detailed analyses of APAP hepatotoxicity in the nrf2 knockout mice indicate that a large amount of reactive APAP metabolites was generated in the livers due to the impaired basal expression of two detoxifying enzyme genes, UDP-GT (Ugt1a6) and GGCS. while the cytochrome P450 content was unchanged. Thus. the studies using the nrf2 knockout mice clearly demonstrate significance of the expression of Nrf2-regulated enzymes in protection against xenobiotic toxicity.

  • 석류석과 사방휘석의 평형관계를 20-45kb, $975-1400^{\circ}C$, FMAS시스템에서 상호역반응 실험을 통해서 연구하였으며 반응 촉매제로써 사용한 PbO와 0.55 $PbF_2$의 혼합물은 매우 효과적이었다. Fe-Mg의 교환반응은 이 실험온도, 압력범위 내에서는 조성성분의 영향을 받지 않는다. 실험결과와 석류석의 혼합 모델을 사용한 석류석-사방휘석의 지질온도계는 다음과 같다. $$T^{\circ}C=(1971+11.91P(Kb)+1510(X_{Ca}+X_{Mn})^{Gt}/(lnK_D+0.96)-273$$.

  • Objective: We conducted this study to report the clinical manifestations of integrative treatment with Korean and conventional medicines in a patient with acute hepatitis A after conventional medicine therapy for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and pneumonia. Methods: A patient was treated with herbal medicine, western medicine, and moxibustion. The liver function tests (GOT, GPT, ALP, ${\gamma}-GT$), total bilirubin, and 4-scale scoring (none, mild, moderate, and severe) of symptoms were used to assess any improvement in symptoms. Results and Conclusion: The symptoms at the time of admission were improved. The levels of GOT, GPT, ALP, ${\gamma}-GT$, and total bilirubin were decreased in laboratory tests. We obtained positive effects for the integrative treatment of acute hepatitis A.

모발생장기 유도 C3H 생쥐에 있어서 미녹시딜과 생약추출 혼합 조성물의 모발 재성장 유도 효능 (Evaluation of the Herbal Extract Mixture for the Effects of Hair-Regrowth Compared to 3% Minoxidil; Elongation of Anagen Period on C3H Mice)

  • The hair cycle consists of three phases, growth (anagen), involution (catagen) and quiescence (telogen) phases. In order to evaluate hair re-growth effect of herbal extracts mixture containing the 70% ethanol extracts of Polygoni Multiflori Radix, Mori Cortex Radicis, Gingko Biloba Folium and Pine bud, we have examined the induction of the anagen phase and/or elongation of the anagen period using C3H mice. Morphological examination was done by Hattori' and Ogawa's method. Enzyme activities of ${\gamma}$-glutamyl transpeptidase (${\gamma}$-GT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was detected by Bessey-Lovry-Brock's method. Enzyme activity as a biochemical marker of hair cycle was investigated in the third hair cycle period of C3H mice after depilation. 3% Minoxidil treated group and herbal extract mixture treated group were shown 3 days earlier initiation of anagen than control group. In cycling mouse skin, ${\gamma}$-GT activity is pronounced during anagen and greatly diminished during telogen. Herbal extract mixture has shown promising hair re-growth effect on hair follicular cycles of C3H mice.

On-line measurement and simulation of the in-core gamma energy deposition in the McMaster nuclear reactor

  • In a nuclear reactor, gamma radiation is the dominant energy deposition in non-fuel regions. Heat is generated upon gamma deposition and consequently affects the mechanical and thermal structure of the material. Therefore, the safety of samples should be carefully considered so that their integrity and quality can be retained. To evaluate relevant parameters, an in-core gamma thermometer (GT) was used to measure gamma heating (GH) throughout the operation of the McMaster nuclear reactor (MNR) at four irradiation sites. Additionally, a Monte Carlo reactor physics code (Serpent-2) was utilized to model the MNR with the GT located in the same irradiation sites used in the measurement to verify its predictions against measured GH. This research aids in the development of modeling, calculation, and prediction of the GH utilizing Serpent-2 as well as implementing a new GH measurement at the MNR core. After all uncertainties were quantified for both approaches, comparable GH profiles were observed between the measurements and calculations. In addition, the GH values found in the four sites represent a strong level of radiation based on the distance of the sample from the core. In this study, the maximum and minimum GH values were found at 0.32 ± 0.05 W/g and 0.15 ± 0.02 W/g, respectively, corresponding to 320 Sv/s and 150 Sv/s. These values are crucial to be considered whenever sample is planned to be irradiated inside the MNR core.
