Benefits of lateral cephalogram during landmark identification on posteroanterior cephalograms

  • Objective: Precise identification of landmarks on posteroanterior (PA) cephalograms is necessary when evaluating lateral problems such as facial asymmetry. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the use of lateral (LA) cephalograms can reduce errors in landmark identification on PA cephalograms. Methods: Five examiners identified 16 landmarks (Cg, N, ANS, GT, Me, RO, Lo, FM, Z, Or, Zyg, Cd, NC, Ms, M, and Ag) on 32 PA cephalograms with and without LA cephalograms at the same time. The positions of the landmarks were recorded and saved in the horizontal and vertical direction. The mean errors and standard deviation of landmarks location according to the use of LA cephalograms were compared for each landmark. Results: Relatively small errors were found for ANS, Me, Ms, and Ag, while relatively large errors were found for N, GT, Z, Or, and Cd. No significant difference was found between the horizontal and vertical errors for Z and Or, while large vertical errors were found for N, GT, and Cd. The value of identification error was lower when the landmarks were identified using LA cephalograms. Statistically significant error reductions were found at N and Cd with LA cephalograms, especially in the vertical direction. Conclusions: The use of LA cephalograms during identification of landmarks on PA cephalograms could help reduce identification errors.

Relationships with Alanine Aminotransferase Activity, and Anthropometric and Biochemical Measures in Obese Children (단순 비만아에서 간효소치와 신체 계측 및 생화학 측정치와의 관련성)

  • Purpose: To investigate the physical and biochemical parameters related with elevated serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels in obese children. Methods: One hundred forty-two obese or overweight children who visited the out-patient clinics of Chungnam National University Hospital between January 2006 and August 2008 were enrolled. Physical measures and biochemical tests were performed in all patients. Liver sonography was performed in 43 patients. They were divided into the following 2 groups based on ALT levels: group I, normal ALT levels (n=65); and group II, elevated ALT levels (n=77). We compared the physical measures, biochemical results, and ultrasonographic findings of the livers in both groups. Other causes of elevated serum ALT levels were ruled out. Results: The male-to-female ratios were 1.6:1 in group I and 7.6:1 in group II. Among physical parameters, the waist circumference-to-height ratio and hip circumference-to-height ratio were significantly higher in group II (p=0.001 and 0.046, respectively). Among biochemical parameters, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), ${\gamma}$-glutamyltransferase (${\gamma}$-GT), and total cholesterol levels were significantly higher in group II (p<0.001, 0.001, and 0.001, respectively). The AST/ALT ratio was <1 (mean, 0.55) and statistically lower in group II. There was a positive correlation between the serum ALT level and ${\gamma}$-GT (p<0.001, r=0.750), and a positive correlation between the serum ALT level and the waist circumference-to-height ratio in group II (p<0.001, r=0.401). Conclusion: The results suggest that the waist circumference-to-height ratio and ${\gamma}$-GT may be associated with elevated alanine aminotransferase activity in obese children.

The Alleviating Effects of Green Tea on N-Nitrosodimethylamine Toxicity to Mucins in the Rat Lingual Salivary Glands (흰쥐 혀침샘의 점액질에 미치는 N-Nitrosodimethylamine 독성에 대한 녹차의 완화 효과)

  • This study was performed to determine alleviating effects of green tea (GT) on the N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) toxicity to mucins in the rat lingual salivary glands. Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into five groups: untreated (Control), one week-NDMA administrated (NDMA), one week-GT administrated after NDMA for one week (NDMAGT), one week-NDMA administrated with GT (GTNDMA), and one-week NDMA administrated with GT after GT for one week (GTGTNDMA). The mucin properties were elucidated by periodic acid Schiff (PAS) reaction, alcian blue (AB) pH 2.5, AB pH 2.5-PAS, aldehyde fuchsin (AF) pH 1.7-AB pH 2.5, and high iron diamine (HID)-AB pH 2.5 staining. The lingual von Ebner's glands of NDMA group showed some changes such as contraction and destruction of the serous acini, decrease and disappearance of the cytoplasmic granules, vacuolation of cytoplasm, and the mucigenous duct cells. Also, in the lingual mucous glands, enlarged lumens, fused acini, disappearance of granules, vacuolation of cytoplasm, and mucigenous duct cells were observed. All the GT administrated groups had a tendency to recover. GTGTNDMA group recovered almost up to the state of the control group. The lingual von Ebner's glands of NDMA group showed a decrease of neutral mucin and the lingual mucous glands showed a decrease of both neutral and acidic mucins decreased in comparison with control group, although mucous acini secreting strong sulfomucin decreased while those secreting non-sulfomucin (sialomucin) increased. All the GT administrated groups had a tendency to recover. The degree of recovery in the GTNDMA group was stronger than in NDMAGT group and that of the GTGTNDMA group was almost up to the state of the control group. Plus, lingual von Ebner's glands of GTGTNDMA group contained much more neutral mucin than in the control group. In conclusion, it is suggested that NDMA exhibit the toxicity which affects on the mucin properties and which green tea alleviates.

Microbiological Evaluations of Refrigerated Chicken wings Treated with Acetic Acid (초산으로 처리한 냉장 닭고기 날개의 미생물 평가)

  • The effects of acetic acid (AA) on aerobic plate counts (APC), gram-negative bacterial counts (GNC), and generation time (GT) in chicken wings stored at 4* were assessed. Chicken wings were treated with 0.5-1.5% (v/v) AA at exposure times of 5 min. Treatments of AA for 5 min significantly (P<0.05) reduced aerobic plate counts (APC) and gram-negative bacterial counts (GNC) on the surface of chicken wings for 8 days, respectively. After 4 days of storage, treatments of 1.0% AA and 1.5% AA for 5 min completely (P<0.05) inhibited APC and GNC compared to initial controls. Based on these results, treatments of 1.0% AA and 1.5% AA for 5 min prolonged the microbiological shelf-life for 8 days compared to those of 0.5% AA and the controls. All treatments of AA increased the lag phase and GT of aerobic microorganisma.

Effects of Ballet Program Training of Royal Academy of Dance on Body Composition, Physical Fitness and Bone Mineral Density in College Women (로얄 아카데미 발레댄스 프로그램 수행이 여자 대학생의 신체조성, 체력 및 골밀도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of ballet program training at the Royal Academy of dance (RAD) on body composition (BC), physical fitness (PF) and bone mineral density (BMD) in college women. The subjects for this study were 14 females aged 19 to 22, who were divided into the Experimental group (n=7, EG) and the Control group (n=7, CG). The RAD ballet program training was done by 7 subjects (EG), 60 minutes per day, three times a week for 12 weeks. The TBF and %fat significantly decreased and LBM increased in the Experimental group, but all the variables of Body composition in the Control group did not significantly changed. The AMS, Sit ups, STF, SLJ CFB and 1,200 m R & W in the EG significantly increased, but 1,200 m R & W in the CG decreased. The lumbar vertebra (LV), femoral neck (FN), greater trochanter (GT) and ward's triangle (WT) did not significantly change in the EG, but LV, GT and WT in the CG decreased. There was no significant difference in osteopenia for EG, but there were increases in GT and WT for the CG. There was significant correlation between BMDs and body weight, TBF, LBM, %fat, BMI, AMS. There was significant correlation between LV and FN and LV and whole body. In conclusion, regular and continuous RAD training was effective in improving the body composition, physical fitness and bone mineral density. Consequently, RAD training will be effective for preventing osteopenia and osteoporosis, and for improving the health-related fitness for college and middle-aged women.

Liver function in Clonorchis sinensis-infected rabbits (간흡충을 감염시킨 토끼의 간기능 검사)

  • Nine rabbits were fed with Clonorchis sinenis metacercariae (MC) and the blood samples chronologically obtained were analyzed biochemically. Rabbits Infected by less than 100 flukes were grouped into Group I, and by 100-250 flukes into Group II. The serum level of alanine amlnotransferase (ALT) was increased from 3 weeks after the Infection of the metacercariae (AIM) and showed a peak at 8 weeks, and decreased from 12 weeks ASM. The serum level of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) was raised to $92.3{\;}{\pm}{\;}65.4{\;}U/L$ at 3 weeks AIM and stayed high until 8 weeks, then lowered thereafter. The serum level of ${\gamma}-glutamyl$ transpeptidase (${\gamma}-GT$) was increased rapidly to the highest value ($18.9{\;}{\pm}{\;}14.6{\;}U/L$) at 16 weeks ASM, and decreased to the control level after 20 weeks. The serum level of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was headed down from the early infection to 52 weeks AIM. The serum cholesterol level was increased from 8 weeks and reached at a peak 16 weeks AIM, and decreased thereafter to the control level. It is suggested that serum ALT, AST, ALP and ${\gamma}-GT$ tests be useful to diagnose the early infEction of C. sinensis.

A Study on Freeze-Thaw Conditions Analysis of Soil Using Sentinel-1 SAR and Surface State Factor (Sentinel-1 SAR와 지표상태인자를 활용한 토양의 동결 융해 상태 분석 연구)

  • In this study, we used Sentinel-1 C-band synthetic aperture radar to calculate the surface state factor (SSF) for distinguishing the frozen-thawed state of soil. The accuracy of SSF classification was analyzed through comparison with air temperature (AT), grass temperature (GT), and underground temperature (UT). For the analysis, 116 Sentinel-1B Descending nodes observed over a period of 4 years from 2017 to 2020 were established for the central region of South Korea. AT, GT, and UT data were obtained from 23 soil moisture observation points of the Rural Development Administration during the same period, and analyzed using the 06:00 am data adjacent to the shooting time of the Sentinel-1B images. The average accuracy and F1-score for all stations were 0.63 and 0.47 for AT, 0.63 and 0.48 for GT, and 0.57 and 0.21 for UT, respectively. For winter (December-February) data, the average accuracy and F1-score were 0.66 and 0.76 for AT, 0.67 and 0.76 for GT, and 0.47 and 0.44 for UT, respectively. The increase in accuracy during winter data may be attributed to the fact that errors occurring in other seasons are not included.
