  • Pure $Fe_3$Al alloys with three different compositions of Fe-21.8%Al, Fe-24.1%Al and Fe-27.2%Al were prepared by vacuum induction melting followed by homogenization and hot forging. The long-time oxidation behavior of the prepared alloys was studied at 1073, 1273 and 1473k in air. The oxidation resistance greatly increased with an increase in Al contents. Thin and uniform oxide scales were always formed on Fe-27.2%Al, while thick and fragile oxide scales were formed on Fe-(21.8, 24.1%)Al. Internal oxidation was observed in Fe-(21.8, 24.1%)Al, when oxidized above 1273K. The major oxidation product of all the oxidized alloys was always $\alpha$-$Al_2$$O_3$.

  • It is well known that iron is one of the most common impurity elements found in aluminum and its alloys. Iron in the aluminum forms an intermetallic compounds such as $FeAl_3$. The $FeAl_3$ particles on the aluminum surface are one of the most detrimental phases to the corrosion process and anodizing procedure for aluminum and its alloys. Trial and error surface treatment will be carried out to find the preferential and effective removal of $FeAl_3$ particles on the surfaces without dissolution of aluminum matrix around the particles. One of the preferable surface treatments for the aim of getting $FeAl_3$ free surface was an electrochemical treatment such as cathodic current density of $-2kAm^{-2}$ in a 20-30 mass% $HNO_3$ solution for the period of 300s. The corrosion characteristics of aluminum surface with $FeAl_3$ free particles are examined in a $0.1kmol/m^3$ NaCl solution. It is found that aluminum with free $FeAl_3$ particles shows higher corrosion resistance than aluminum with $FeAl_3$ particles.

  • In this study, nano-crystallized $Al_2O_3$ was coated on the surface of $LiFePO_4$ powders via a novel dry coating method. The influence of coated $LiFePO_4$ upon electrochemical behavior was discussed. Surface morphology characterization was achieved by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), clearly showing nano-crystallized $Al_2O_3$ on $LiFePO_4$ surfaces. Furthermore, it revealed that the $Al_2O_3$-coated $LiFePO_4$ cathode exhibited a distinct surface morphology. It was also found that the $Al_2O_3$ coating reduces capacity fading especially at high charge/discharge rates. Results from the cyclic voltammogram measurements (2.5-4.2 V) showed a significant decrease in both interfacial resistance and cathode polarization. This behavior implies that $Al_2O_3$ can prevent structural change of $LiFePO_4$ or reaction with the electrolyte on cycling. In addition, the $Al_2O_3$ coated $LiFePO_4$ compound showed highly improved area-specific impedance (ASI), an important measure of battery performance. From the correlation between these characteristics of bare and coated $LiFePO_4$, the role of $Al_2O_3$ coating played on the electrochemical performance of $LiFePO_4$ was probed.

  • A $CO_2$ laser overlay was conducted by using a Fe-based powder on the AC2B aluminum substrate. Cracks and intermetallic compounds (IMC) were observed inconsistently along the interface between the overlay and post-molten layer. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) detected some Fe-rich IMC ($Fe_3Al$, FeAl) as well as the brittle Al-rich IMC ($Fe_2Al_5,\;FeAl_3$). Micro vickers hardness proved the formation of Al-rich IMC ($FeAl_3$) along the interface by showing HV0.1 $800{\sim}900$. Furthermore, nano indentation was successfully applied to investigate the behavior of IMC more precisely than the micro vickers hardness.

  • The magnetic properties and crystallization behaviors of $Fe_{83-x}Al_{x}Nb_{5}B_{12}(X=1~5at%)$ alloys were investigated. The $Fe_{80}Al_{3}Nb_{5}B_{12}$ alloy was developed a very good soft magnetic material with ultra-fine grain structure in Fe-Al-Nb-B system alloys. When 1 at% of Cu was added in Fe-Al-Nb-B alloy, the soft magnetic properties were found to improve significantly through the reduction of the grain size upto about 6~7 nm at $450^{\circ}C$. The magnetic properties of the $Fe_{79}Al_{3}Nb_{5}B_{12}Cu_{1}$ alloy were as follows : ${\mu}_{eff}(1\;kHz)=26,000,\;B_{10}=1.45\;T,\;H_{c}=25\;mOe,\;P_{c}(100\;kHz,\;0.2\;T)=55\;W/kg$, respectively.

  • The pseudo-spinel type solid solution, $LiAl_{2.5}/Fe_{2.5}O_8$ was prepared by reaction of $LiCO_3, Al_2O_3, Fe_2O_3$ mixture at 1620K, which can be used for cathode material in lithium batteries. Its structure was investigated by Rietveld profile-analysis of XRD in detail. The space group of solid solution is $P4_3$32(a=8.1293$\AA$) and the final residual index of structure refinement was about 5%. Cations $Al^{3+}, Fe^{3+}$ are located at both tetra- and octahedral-coordination and $Li^+$ ions are occupied in the octahedral 4b-, 12d-site of the inverse spinel.

  • Fabrication of nanocomposite material for the $Fe_2O_3-Al$ system by mechanical alloying (MA) has been investigated at room temperature. It is found that ${\alpha}-Fe/Al_2O_3$ nanocomposite powders in which $Al_2O_3$ is dispersed in ${\alpha}-Fe$ matrix are obtained by mechanical alloying of $Fe_2O_3$ with Al for 5 hours. The change in magnetization and coercivity also reflects the details of the solid state reduction process of hematite by pure metal of Al during mechanical alloying. Densification of the MA powders was performed in a spark plasma sintering (SPS) machine using graphite dies at $1000^{\circ}C$ and $1100^{\circ}C$ under 60 MPa. Shrinkage change after SPS of MA'ed sample for 5 hrs was significant above $700^{\circ}C$ and gradually increased with increasing temperature up to $1100^{\circ}C$. X-ray diffraction result shows that the average grain size of ${\alpha}-Fe$ in ${\alpha}-Fe/Al_2O_3$ nanocomposite sintered at $1100^{\circ}C$ is in the range of 180 nm. It can be also seen that the coercivity (Hc) of SPS sample sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$ is still high value of 88 Oe, suggesting that the grain growth of magnetic ${\alpha}-Fe$ phase during SPS process tend to be suppressed.

  • Al-Si coated boron steel and Zn coated DP steel plates were laser-welded to manufacture a Tailor Welded Blank (TWB) for a car body frame. Hot-stamping heat treatment ($900^{\circ}C$, 5 min) was applied to the TWB weld, and the microstructural change and transformation mechanism were investigated in the Al-rich area near the bond line of the Al-Si coated steel side. There was Al-rich area with a single phase, $Fe_3(Al,Si)$, which was transformed to ${\alpha}-Fe$ (Ferrite) after the heat treatment. It could be explained that the $Fe_3(Al,Si)$ phase was transformed to ${\alpha}-Fe$ during heat treatment at $900^{\circ}C$ for 5 min and the resultant ${\alpha}-Fe$ phase was not transformed by rapid cooling. Before the heat treatment, the microstructures around the $Fe_3(Al,Si)$ phase consisted of martensite, bainite and ${\alpha}-Fe$ while they were transformed to martensite and ${\delta}-Fe$ after the heat treatment. Due to the heat treatment, Al was diffused to the $Fe_3(Al,Si)$ and this resulted in an increase of Al content to 0.7 wt% around the Al-rich area. If the weld was held at $900^{\circ}C$ for 5 min it was transformed to a mixture of austenite (${\gamma}$) and ${\delta}-Fe$, and only ${\gamma}$ was transformed to the martensite by water cooling while the ${\delta}-Fe$ was remained unchanged.

  • Mechanical alloying using high-energy ball mill and subsequent spark plasma sintering (SPS) process was applied to Al-Fe-Cr and Al-Fe-Mo powder mixture to investigate effects of Cr and Mo addition on thermal stability of Al-Fe, and thereby to enhance its thermal stability up to $500^{\circC}$. Various analytical techniques including micro-Vickers hardness test, SEM, TEM, X-ray diffractometry and corrosion test were carried out. It was found that addition of Cr and Mo to Al-Fe system played a role of grain growth inhibitor of matrix Al and some precipitates such as $Al_3Fe$ during SPS and subsequent heat treatment. The inhibition of grain growth resulted in increased Vickers hardness and thermal stability up to $500^{\circC}$ comparing to those of Al-Fe alloy system.

  • The sulfidation behaviour of Fe-XAl-0.3Y(X=5, 10, 14, 25 $wt.\%$) alloys was investigated at 1123 K in $H_2/H_{2}S$ gas atmosphere for $1\sim24$ hrs using SEM/EDX, XRD and EPMA. The weight changes of Fe-XAl-0.3Y alloys followed the parabolic rate law, Sulfidation rates of iron aluminide alloys with high Al content were one-twentieth lower than that of 5Al alloys. This is due to the formation of protective $Al_{2}O_3$ oxides on the surface of 10Al, 14Al and 25Al alloys. By calculating partial pressure of impurity oxygen contained $H_2/H_{2}S$ gas, the $Al_{2}O_3$ oxides formation could be explained using Fe-Al-S-O thermodynamic stability diagram. The sulfidation product scales of the 5Al alloy showed that thick iron sulfide scale(FeS) containing porosities formed during early stages of sulfidation. With continued sulfidation, aluminum sulfide was formed at the alloy/scale interface.
