  • The effect of annealing on the magnetic properties and the microstructures of the amorphous $Fe_{76-x}Cu_1Mo_xSi_{14}B_9$(x=2,3) alloys were investigated. When annealed at 500${^{\circ}C}$ for 1hr, $8{\sim}9{\times}10^3$ of the effective permeability and 3~4 A/m of the coercive force were achieved upon crystallization to $\alpha$-Fe phase. And the average diameter of the $\alpha$-Fe grains was about 20nm. For the nanovrystalline ferromagnets. the fine grain size is the important requirement to obtain a good soft magnetic property. In this work, in order to get the finer grain size of $\alpha$-Fe phase, two-step annealing treatment was given. That is, following the low-temperature at $400{^{\circ}C}$ for 1~3hr, the high-temperature annealing at $500{^{\circ}C}$ for 1hr was carried out. As the low-temperature annealing time increased, the effective permeability increased to $1.2{\sim}1.7{\times}10^4$ and the coercive force decreased to about 2 A/m. And the grain size was observed to be smaller than 10nm. The increased permeability and the decreased coercive force were attributed to the reduced average crystalline anisotropy by the refinement of $\alpha$-Fe(Si) grains.

  • This work examined pitting corrosion failure of a copper heat-return pipe used in a district heating system. The copper pipe was corroded with a 48% reduction in thickness due to localized corrosion on the inner surface exposed to heating water of 20 ~ 40 ℃. Fe and Si elements as corrosion products were found around pits. Cl element was also observed, which accelerated oxidation of copper inside pits. Cu2O deposits on the pit's bottom surface decreased the pH inside the pit. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed hematite, cuprite, malachite and brochantite as corrosion products. Chemical analysis demonstrated that Fe and Si elements did not exist in the copper, supply water, or heating water, indicating that Fe and Si species might have entered into the pipe from the exterior. These results indicated that pits were initiated due to ion concentration gradient near Fe and Si species. Moreover, the interior of pits had lower pH due to Cl- concentration and Cu2O reactions, which accelerated the pit's growth and led to formation of pinholes. Additionally, we confirmed that the type of pitting corrosion was a complex combination of types I and II based on the HCO3-/SO42- ratio, pH, temperature, and corrosion products.

  • Dissolution procedures of Monsanto catalyst which has been used to produce acrylronitrile by ammoxidation of propylene have been studied. Optimum dissolution condition of the catalyst supported on silica was obtained by microwave digestion system with mixed of HCl, HF and $H_2O_2$. When a safety device was activated by increased pressure in microwave vessel, Bi, Fe, Mo, Sb and U were not volatilized even though silica was volatilized as $SiF_4$. Quantification results by this method were $SiO_2$ $50.5{\pm}0.4%$, $Sb_2O_3$ $29.6{\pm}0.6%$, $UO_2$ $10.2{\pm}0.1%$, $Fe_2O_3$ $6.1{\pm}0.1%$, $MoO_3$ $0.73{\pm}0.01%$ and $Bi_2O_3$ $0.49{\pm}0.01%$ by ICP-AES and the relative error was within ${\pm}10%$ except bismuth.

  • Exchange coupled $NiFe/TbCo/Sio_{2}$ thin films for magnetoresistive heads were sputter deposited using RF diode sputtering method, and their magnetic characteristics were measured. TbCo films were deposited using a composite target, which is composed of Tb chips epoxied on a Co target. NiFe($400\AA$)/TbCo($1500\AA$)/$SiO_{2}$($500\AA$) films were deposited using a TbCo target having 30 % of Tb area ratio, which showed 25 Oe of the exchange field without substrate bias and 12 Oe with -55 V of substrate bias. The effective in-plane coercivities of the three layer films fabricated with less than -55 V of substrate bias were approximately proportional to the perpendicular coercivities of the TbCo layer only. The films fabricated with a Theo target of 28 % area ratio showed the same trend. However, the exchange field decreased to 4 Oe without the substrate bias and 7 Oe with -55 V of substrate bias. In the films fabricated with 1000 W of power and the target of 36 % area ratio exhibited 100 Oe of exchange field and 3 Oe of coercivity. As the thickness of NiFe layer increased, the exchange field decreased.

  • We characterized the smelting process and smelting furnace through scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy, wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, and raman micro-spectroscopy with 13 relics including slags and furnace walls excavated from square-shaped building sites and pits of the Three Kingdoms site at the Ungyo site section I. Our results revealed that the principal components were FeO and SiO2; and CuO, PbO, and ZnO were contained in small quantities. Furthermore, fayalite, magnetite, augite, copper, and cuprite were found. High contents of FeO or SiO2 components seem to have been added to form fayalite to remove gangue in the smelting process. The relatively low content of S detected in the copper prills suggests that roasting was performed well. Cristobalite and mullite, which are minerals that indicate high-temperature found in the furnace wall, show that the smelting temperature was higher than 1,250℃. The findings of this study show a high possibility that the Wanju Ungyo site is smelting remains of copper ores, which are nonferrous metals, rather than iron. Various smelting byproducts excavated in this area in the future will help us better understand the copper smelting process that may have been performed since ancient times.

  • In the present investigation, refined alumina obtained from alunite locally available was used as a aluminous source to synthesize monocalcium aluminate $(CA)_3$ the major mineral constituent of alumina cement. The influence of $SiO_2$ and $Fe_2O_3$ contents on the formation of monocalcium aluminate was studied by X-ray diffraction analysis mainly. About 0.8-1.0 of $Al_2O_3/C_3O$ mol ratio and less than 4 percent of $SiO_2$ were desirable for the effective formation of CA. The small amount of alkali and sulphur contents contained in refined alumina from alunite as the impurities were affected to form $C_4A_3S$ and $C_3S_2$, disadvantageous compounds for the alumina cement, therefore the impurities should be restricted in minimum content as possible.

  • MR characteristics in magnetic tunnel junction using CoO as the oxide barrier were investigated. Spin-dependent tunnel junctions were fabricated on 4$\^$o/ tilt-cut (111)Si substrates in 3-gun magnetron sputtering system. The top and bottom ferromagnetic electrodes were Ni$\_$80/Fe$\_$20/(300 $\AA$) and Co(300 $\AA$), respectively. The oxide barriers (CoO) were formed by the thermal oxidation at room temperature in an O$_2$ atmosphere and the plasma oxidation. The increase of coercive field due to antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic coupling has been observed in O$_2$plasma-oxidized CoO based junctions at room temperature. At a sensing current of 1 mA, MR ratios of O$_2$plasma-oxidized CoO based junction and thermal-oxidized CoO based junction at room temperature were 1% and 5%, respectively. Larger MR ratios are observed in magnetic tunnel juctions with thermal oxidized CoO when sensing current more than applied 1.5 mA. At a sensing current of 1.5 mA, we have observed MR value of 28 % and specific resistance (RA=R$\times$A) value of 10.9 ㏀$\times$$^2$. When specific resistance values reached 2.28 ㏀$\times$$^2$, we have observed that MR ratios become as high as 120%.
