Life table studies were conducted in the laboratory for the eulophid gregarious pupal parasitoid, Tetrastichus sp., on Hyphantria cunea Drury at a constant temperature of 28.2$\pm$2$^{\circ}C$, 50-60% RH to evaluate their impact on the host and their potential biological control. Development of immature stage took 20.1$\pm$2.7 d: adult females lived for 23.2$\pm$2.2 (range, 16-27)d and produced a mean of 53.6$\pm$26.6 adult progeny per female, with a sex ratio of 1: 9.5 (M:F). The intrinsic rate of natural increase (r$_{m}$) was 0.178/ female/day; the net reproductive rate (R$_{o}$), 46.74; the capacity for increase (r$_{c}$) 0.177; the finite rate of increase (λ) 1.19/female/day; thus each female contributed 46.74 individuals to the population in a mean generation time of 21.6 d. Biological factors in determining the life history trait variation of the parasitoid were discussed.d.d.d.
Interval mapping using microsatellite markers was employed to detect quantitative trait loci (QTL) in the experimental cross between Berkshire and Yorkshire pigs. In order to derive critical values (CV) for test statistics for declaring significance of QTL, permutation test (PT) of Churchill and Doerge method(1994) and the analytical method(LK) of Lander and Kruglyak(1995) were used by each trait and chromosome. 525 $F_2$ progeny phenotypes of five traits(carcass weight, loin eye area, marbling score, cholesterol content, last back fat thickness) and genotypes of 125 markers covering the genome were used. Data were analyzed by line cross regression interval mapping with an F-test every by 1cM. PT CV were based on 10,000 permutations. CV at genome-wise test were 10.5 for LK and ranged from 8.1 to 8.3 for PT, depending on the trait. CV, differed substantially between methods, led to different numbers of quantitative trait loci (QTL) to be detected. PT results in the least stringent CV compared at the same % level.

Objective: The aim was to characterize the genetic diversity evolution of the registered Mexican Charolais cattle population by pedigree analysis. Methods: Data consisted of 331,390 pedigree records of animals born from 1934 to 2018. Average complete generation equivalent, generation interval, effective population size (Ne), and effective numbers of founders (fe), ancestors (fa), and founder genomes (Ng) were calculated for seven five-year periods. The inbreeding coefficient was calculated per year of birth, from 1984 to 2018, whereas the gene contribution of the most influential ancestors was calculated for the latter period. Results: Average complete generation equivalent consistently increased across periods, from 4.76, for the first period (1984 through 1988), to 7.86, for the last period (2014 through 2018). The inbreeding coefficient showed a relative steadiness across the last seventeen years, oscillating from 0.0110 to 0.0145. During the last period, the average generation interval for the father-offspring pathways was nearly 1 yr. longer than that of the mother-offspring pathways. The effective population size increased steadily since 1984 (105.0) and until 2013 (237.1), but showed a minor decline from 2013 to 2018 (233.2). The population displayed an increase in the fa since 1984 and until 2008; however, showed a small decrease during the last decade. The effective number of founder genomes increased from 1984 to 2003, but revealed loss of genetic variability during the last fifteen years (from 136.4 to 127.7). The fa:fe ratio suggests that the genetic diversity loss was partially caused by formation of genetic bottlenecks in the pedigree; in addition, the Ng:fa ratio indicates loss of founder alleles due to genetic drift. The most influential ancestor explained 1.8% of the total genetic variability in the progeny born from 2014 to 2018. Conclusion: Inbreeding, Ne, fa, and Ng are rather beyond critical levels; therefore, the current genetic status of the population is not at risk.
This is the first study reporting the evaluation of transgenic lines of tomato harboring rice chitinase (RCG3) gene for resistance to two important fungal pathogens Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (Fol) causing fusarium wilt and Alternaria solani causing early blight (EB). In this study, three transgenic lines TL1, TL2 and TL3 of tomato Solanum lycopersicum Mill. cv. Riogrande genetically engineered with rice chitinase (RCG 3) gene and their R1 progeny was tested for resistance to Fol by root dip method and A. solani by detached leaf assay. All the R0 transgenic lines were highly resistant to these fungal pathogens compared to nontransgenic control plants. The pattern of segregation of three independent transformant for Fol and A. solani was also studied. Mendelian segregation was observed in transgenic lines 2 and 3 while it was not observed in transgenic line 1. It was concluded that introduction of chitinase gene in susceptible cultivar of tomato not only enhanced the resistance but was stably inherited in transgenic lines 2 and 3.
A total of 1,367 first lactation records of daughters of 81 sires, having 5 or more progeny were used to evaluate sires by 3 different methods viz., least squares (LS), best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) and derivative free restricted maximum likelihood (DFREML) method. The highest and lowest overall average breeding value of sires for first lactation 305 days or less milk yield was obtained by BLUP (1,520.72 kg) and LS method (1,502.22 kg), respectively. The accuracy, efficiency and stability of different sire evaluation methods were compared to judge their effectiveness. The error variance of DFREML method was lowest ($191,112kg^2$) and its coefficient of determination of fitting the model was highest (33.39%) revealing that this method of sire evaluation was most efficient and accurate as compared to other methods. However, the BLUP method was most stable amongst all the methods having coefficient of variation (%) very near to unadjusted data (18.72% versus 19.89%). The higher rank correlations (0.7979 to 0.9568) between different sire evaluation methods indicated that there was higher degree of similarity of ranking sires by different methods ranging from about 80 to 96 percent. However, the DFREML method seemed to be the most effective sire evaluation method as compared to other methods for the present set of data.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the sex ratio of produced lamb after artificial insemination into the cervix with spermatozoa from the top and bottom portion of ram semen separated by diluting semen a column of protein, and after implantation into the uterus with normal morulae and blastocyst cultured in BMOG-3 and Ham F-10 medium containing H-Y anbibody and complement treated with spleen and testis, respectively. All embryos developed to morulae and blastocyst were cultrued in medium under gas phase of 5% CO2 in air at 37$^{\circ}C$, 24 hrs. Estrus of ewes induced by a MAP vaginal sponge and 750 IU PMSG during the non-breeding season. The result obtained in these experiments were summarized as follows: 1. The ratio of heating, lambing, and prolificacy after artificial inseminatin into the cervix of ewes induced by a MAP vaginal sponge and 750 IU PMSG during the non-breeding season were 100%, 40% and 2.74 heads, respectively. 2. Involving 44 ewes, spermatozoa from the top of the protein column produced 23.1% male and 76.9% female lambs, while spermatozoa from the bottom of the column produced 81.3% male and 18.8% female offspring, respectively. 3. The sex ratio (male-to-female) of progeny produced after implantation with normal morulae and blastocyst cultured in medium containing H-Y antibody and complement treated with spleen and testis were 21.0%, 79.0% and 17.4%, 82.6%, respectively.
During a 5-yr period, 1994-1998, pre-weaning and weaning data were collected on 591 calves produced by mating either straightbred Jersey, straightbred Limousin or $F_1$ (Limousin${\times}$Jersey) bulls to mature purebred Jersey or Limousin cows. Traits recorded included birth and weaning weight, height, length, girth, fat depth and a measure of muscle (ratio of stifle to hip width expressed as a percentage). All traits were analyzed assuming a model with sire and dam random effects that included effects of year and date of birth, sex, breed and year${\times}$sex interaction. Main effects were generally significant with few exceptions. Direct genetic effects were large for weight, height, girth and muscle with a breed trend from purebred Jersey (small) to purebred Limousin (large). At weaning, the maternal effect of the Jersey dam was positive for weight (10.9${\pm}$4.9 kg), girth (3.7${\pm}$1.0 cm) and muscle (6.0${\pm}$0.9%). Heterosis was highly significant and positive only for fat depth (1.5${\pm}$0.2 mm) with the $F_1$ progeny being the fattest, followed by the backcrosses, then purebred Jersey and purebred Limousin. Also, significant (p<0.001) but negative heterosis was observed for weight, girth and muscle. The change in ranking for fat depth relative to other traits is a reflection of the large heterotic effects relative to direct effects on fat depth. Epistatic effects were not significant on any trait at birth or weaning. This study has indicated the possibility of exploiting the positive heterotic and maternal effects for fat depth and muscularity to meet specific meat quality and quantity demand by consumers.

Objective: This study aims to analyze the characteristics of airborne radon and thoron level ($Bq/m^3$) generated from household products containing monazites, and estimate the effective doses (mSv/yr). Method: Radon & Thoron detector EQF3220 was used to monitor real-time airborne radon and thoron level ($Bq/m^3$), and their daughters ($Bq/m^3$) were recorded every two hours. Effective doses (mSv/yr) for radon and thoron were estimated according to models developed by International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) and United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR). Results: The average levels of radon and thoron were $87.8Bq/m^3$ (range; $20.8-156.3Bq/m^3$) and $1,347.5Bq/m^3$ (range; $4-5,839.7Bq/m^3$), respectively. The average equilibrium factors (F) were 0.23 and 0.007, respectively. The levels of radon progeny were far higher than that thoron. Latex mattress showed the highest F (0.38). The average effective doses were estimated to be ICRP (1.9 mSv/yr) and UNSCER (1.3 mSv/yr) for radon and UNSCEAR (1.6 mSv/yr) for thoron. Conclusions: Our results have far exceeded the allowable effective dose for general population (1 mSv/yr). The government's actions such as the ban of use of consumer products containing monazite and the establishment of surveillance system to evaluate health effects for the people affected should be taken as early as possible.
To determine whether FT-IR spectral analysis based on multivariate analysis could be used to discriminate Chinese cabbage breeding line at metabolic level, whole cell extracts of nine different breeding lines (three paternal, three maternal and three $F_1$ lines) were subjected to Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). FT-IR spectral data of Chinese cabbage plants were analyzed by principal component analysis (PCA), partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), and hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA). The hierarchical dendrograms based on PLS-DA from two of three cross combinations showed that paternal, maternal, and their progeny $F_1$ lines samples were perfectly separated into three branches in breeding line dependent manner. However, a cross combination failed to fully discriminate them into three branches. Thus, hierarchical dendrograms based on PLS-DA of FT-IR spectral data of Chinese cabbage breeding lines could be used to represent the most probable chemotaxonomical relationship among maternal, paternal, and $F_1$ plants. Furthermore, these metabolic discrimination systems could be applied for rapid selection and classification of useful Chinese cabbage cultivars.

Tomato hypocotyl can generally be one of two colors, purple or green. Genetically, this trait is controlled by a single dominant gene. Hypocotyl tissue specific color expression is one of many visible genetic marker sources used to select tomato progeny. However, the visible marker does not show a clear distinction between homozygous genotype and heterozygous genotype from the breeding lines. Therefore, to identify a hypocotyl pigmentation related marker, we screened DNA polymorphisms in thirteen tomato lines showing purple or green hypocotyls. The markers used for screening consisted of primer set information obtained from anthocyanin related genes, conserved ortholog set II (COS II) marker sets localized near anthocyanin related genes, and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) markers localized near COS II markers, which produce polymorphisms between purple and green tomatoes. One primer from a RFLP fragment resulted in a polymorphism on agarose gel electrophoresis. From the RFLP fragment, a cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence (CAPS) marker was developed to distinguish between purple and green hypocotyls. The genotypes of 135 $F_2$ individuals were analyzed using the CAPS marker, and among them, 132 individuals corresponded to the phenotypes of hypocotyl pigmentation.
