  • The radioactivity inventory significantly affects all steps of decommissioning projects including planning, cost estimation, risk assessment, waste management and site remediation. The decommissioning project of the KRR-2 was completed in 2009 and a large amount of activated concrete waste was generated. The bioshield concrete, containing minute amount of impurity elements, was activated by neutron reaction during the operation of the reactor. A variety radionuclides was generated in the concrete, including $^3H$, $^{14}C$, $^{55}Fe$, $^{60}Co$ $^{63}Ni$, $^{134}Cs$, $^{152}Eu$ and $^{154}Eu$. In this paper, the comparison between the calculated results and previous measured results was carried out to estimate the inventory of the bioshield concrete of the KRR-2. The combined computer codes of MCNP5 and ORIGEN 2.1 for calculation of the distribution of neutron flux, cross-section and generation of radionuclides were used. The results were shown that 99.8% of the total radioactivity of $^3H$, $^{55}Fe$, $^{60}Co$ and $^{152}Eu$ in the bioshield concrete 12 years after shutdown. The effects on the variation of inventory were analysed depending on the operation periods and the cooling times in the bioshield concrete.

  • To enhance the luminescence properties, the red phosphor composed of $(Y,\;Zn)_2O_3$:$Eu^{3+}$ as doping concentration of Zn ion is synthesized at $1200^{\circ}C$ for 6 hrs in air atmosphere by conventional solid reaction method. As a result of the red phosphor $(Y,\;Zn)_2O_3$:$Eu^{3+}$ is measured X-ray diffraction (XRD), The main peak is nearly corresponded to the same as JCPDS card (No. 41-1105). When the doping concentration of Zn ion is more than 5 mol%, However, the ZnO peak is showed by XRD analysis. Therefore, when the doping concentration of Zn ion is less than 5 mol%, the Zn ion is well mixed in $Y_2O_3$ structure without the impurity phases. The photoluminescence (PL) properties is shown as this phosphor is excited in 254 nm region and the highest emission spectra of $(Y,\;Zn)_2O_3$:$Eu^{3+}$ has shown in 612 nm region because of a typical energy transition ($^5D_0{\rightarrow}^7F_2$) of $Eu^{3+}$ ion. As the doping concentration of Zn ion is more than 10 mol%, the emission peak is suddenly decreased. when the highest emission peak as doping concentration of Zn ion is shown, the composition of this phosphor is $(Y_{0.95},\;Zn_{0.05})_2O_3$:$Eu^{3+}_{0.075}$ and the particle size analyzed by FE-SEM is confirmed from 0.4 to $3{\mu}m$.

  • The purity of CeO$_2$, Sm$_2$O$^{3+}$ and La2O$^{3+}$ have been determinated by separating the impurity of rare earth-elements in those oxides with anion exchange resin and measuring the absorbance of the separated element with MTB. 1 ml of the mixture solution containing each 1 mg/ml of Y$^{3+}$, Yb$^{3+}$, Eu$^{3+}$, Sm$^{3+}$, Nd$^{3+}$, Pr$^{3+}$, Ce$^{4+}$and La$^{3+}$ is loaded in top layer of anion exchange resin column, Amberlite CG400 and separated with the mixture solution of the various concentration of methyl alcohol and nitric acid as an eluent. Using the result, the impure rare earth elements in pure CeO$_2$, Sm$_2$O$^{3+}$ and La$_2$O$^{3+}$ are determinated.

  • Multi-use ophthalmic solutions are used many times after opening; therefore, there is a high possibility of decreased quality during use. This study was conducted to determine the recommended use period of multi-use ophthalmic solutions based on evaluation of the stability by comparing stability evaluation regulations of the USA, EU and Korea We selected four types of multi-use ophthalmic solutions (Olopatadine (Olo), Fluorometholone (Flu), Dorzolamide (Dor), Timolol (Timol)) that are frequently marketed in Korea and evaluated their stability during storage according to the actual usage method after opening. The Olo had a decrease in assay and preservative content at 2 months after opening, while Flu showed a significant difference from day 28 after opening. For Dor, significant differences were observed from day 14 after opening in the assay and impurity test item and Timol showed a significant difference from day 28 after opening. Based on the results of the stability test Olo and Flu should only be used within 28 days of opening, while Dor and Timol should be used within 14 days of opening. Therefore, we suggest that regulations system related use periods of multi-use ophthalmic solutions designed as aseptic preparations should be improved based on the results of stability tests after opening.
