Corrosion of Ti3AlC2 at 800-1100℃ in SO2 gas atmosphere (Ti3AlC2의 800-1100℃, SO2 가스 분위기에서의 부식)

  • $Ti_3AlC_2$ was corroded between 800 and $1100^{\circ}C$ in an Ar-0.2% $SO_2$ gas atmosphere according to the equation: $Ti_3AlC_2+O_2{\rightarrow}rutile-TiO_2+{\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ + (CO or $CO_2$). The scales that formed on the $Ti_3AlC_2$ were thin and rich in ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$, whose growth rate was exceedingly slow. The $TiO_2$ was present either as the outermost surface scale or a mixture inside the ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$-rich scale. In the $Ti_3AlC_2$, the activity and diffusivity of Ti were low, whereas those of Al were high. This was the main reason for the superior corrosion resistance of $Ti_3AlC_2$ over TiAl.

  • Hydrothermal synthesis was conducted with starting material as Barium hydroxide and hydrous titania ($TiO_2{\cdot}xH_2O$) to obtain barium titanate fine Powder. The conversion, crystal structure and properties of as-prepared powder were investigated according to reaction temperature, time and concentration. The effect of variables on conversion was in order of time < temperature < concentration and the maximum conversion reached to 99.5% in the case of hydrothermal synthesis at $180^{\circ}C$ for 2 h with 2.0 M reactant concentration. At low concentration such as 0.25 M, formation of unreacted $BaCO_3$ and $TiO_2$ was not inevitable at even high reaction temperature and these components converted into $BaTi_2O_5$ at high temperature and remained as impurity. As concentration of reactant increased, the size of as-synthesized $BaTiO_3$ powder deceased and Ba/Ti molar ratio approached into 1, showing Ba/Ti ratio of $1{\pm}0.005$ for reaction at $180^{\circ}C$ for 2 h with 2.0 M concentration.

A Study on the Acid Property and the Activity of Xylene Oxidation Catalyst (자일렌 산화반응 촉매의 산특성과 반응성에 관한 연구)

  • The acid properties of $V_2O_5-TiO_2/SiO_2$ catalysts and the partial oxidation of o-xylene into phthalic anhydride had been investigated in order to relate the acid property of catalyst to the catalytic activity. $V_2O_5$ had both weak (V=O) and strong (V-O-V) acid sites which gave pyridine desorption peaks at $230^{\circ}C$ and $300^{\circ}C$, respectively, and the amount of weak acid sites at $230^{\circ}C$ decreased with the increase of calcination temperature. On the other hand, the amount of weak acid sites increased considerably by increasing the amount of $TiO_2$ to the $V_2O_5-TiO_2/SiO_5$, and the maximum value was shown at 20 and higher mole % of $TiO_2$ with respect to $SiO_2$. In the oxidation of o-xylene, $V_2O_5-TiO_2/SiO_2$ enhandced more the total conversion and the selectivity to phthalic anhydride than $V_2O_5/SiO_2$, and the higher $TiO_2$ ratio to $V_2O_5$ increased the total conversion but could not change the selectivity to phthalic anhydride. Weak acid sites (V=O) led o-xylene to partial oxidation producing phthalic anhydride by adsorbing o-xylene weakly, while acid sites (V-O-V) led it to total oxidation producing CO and $CO_2$ by adsorbing it strongly.

  • It is hard to synthesize pure $BaTiO_3$ from $BaCO_3$ and $TiO_2$ in solid reaction for the activity of BaO and secondary phase. For this reason, the wet chemical techniques have been studied. Starting material which was used in these methods were expensive and the properties of powder which was synthesized in same defined. So, some process have been studying again to improve soild reaction method. This study which was one of those was to defin the forming mechanism of $Ba_2TiO_4$ and to control some condition of $Ba_2TiO_4$. The synthesis temperature of $BaTiO_3$ in solid reaction was near $1120^{\circ}C$. The quantity and forming temperature of $Ba_2TiO_4$ could be controlled by atmosphere heat treatment. $Ba_2TiO_4$ was related to expansion in Ba-rich region of $BaTiO_3$. $BaTiO_2O_5$ and $BaTiO_3O_7$ was reason to expand in Ti-rich region. The dielectrics of $CeAIO_3$ which was synthesized and sintered in reduction atmosphere and $BaTiO_3$ system were affected by $CeO_2$ which was formed for the decomposition of $CeAIO_3$ heat treatment in air.

Characteristics of perovskite-structure Sr(Ti1-xFex)O3 thick film gas sensors (페롭스카이트 구조 Sr(Ti1-xFex)O3 후막 가스센서의 특성)

  • Perovskite-structure $Sr(Ti_{1-x}Fe_x)O_3$ thick films, in which x is 0.4 or 0.6, were prepared by normal ceramic process on alumina substrate. Electrical resistance was measured as a function of thermal treatment condition including atmosphere, time, and temperature. The resistance of $Sr(Ti_{1-x}Fe_x)O_3$ films is lower than those of $SrTiO_3$ or $SrFeO_3$ films. The temperature coefficient of resistance over $550^{\circ}C$ was measured to be 0 for the $Sr(Ti_{1-x}Fe_x)O_3$ films after thermal treatment at $1100^{\circ}C$ in air. The sensing property of the films was also measured as a function of temperature and gas such as $O_2$, CO, $CO_2$, NO and $NO_2$. $Sr(Ti_{1-x}Fe_x)O_3$ films showed a good sensing property for $O_2$, but no sensing signal for CO, $CO_2$, NO and $NO_2$.

Study on the Sintering Behavior and Abnormal Grain Growth with Ba/Ti ratio variation of $BaTiO_3$ Ceramics ($BaTiO_3$세라믹스에서 Ba/Ti비 변화에 따른 소결거동 및 비정상 입자성장에 대한 연구)

  • In order to control the microstructures, the sintering behavior and abnormal grain growth with Ba/Ti ratio variation of $BaTiO_3$were investigated. The $BaTiO_3$powders used in this study were prepared by conventional calcination of $BaCO_3$ and $TiO_2$. The onset temperatures of the sintering were lowered and the densification was enhanced with increasing amounts of $TiO_2$ excess. These results are because of decrease of calcined particle sizes. A eutectic melt above temperature of $1320^{\circ}C$ did not assist the densification. Grain growth was strongly inhibited with increasing amounts of $TiO_2$ excess. The inhibition of grain growth caused abnormal grain growth due to inhomogeneous distribution of Ti-rich second phase.

  • Synthesis of long fibrous $K_2Ti_4O_9$ was attempted to find a method to produce long fibrous $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ and other derivatives and also phase transformation of $K_2Ti_4O_9$ synthesized was investigated. Long fibrous $K_2Ti_4O_9$ was succesively synthesized by the calcination reaction under the following reaction conditions ; reaction temperature of $1050^{\circ}C$, $TiO_2$ mole ratio to $K_2CO_3$ of 2.8 and reaction time of 3hrs, and scattering of calcined products for 10hrs with hot boiling water. $K_2Ti_4O_9$ showed lower structural stability under heat treatment and the structure of $K_2Ti_4O_9$ was converted to $K_2Ti_6O_{13}$ under heating temperature of over $250^{\circ}C$.

Characteristics of TiO2 and Ag/TiO2 optical thin film by Co-sputtering method (동시 스퍼터링법에 이용하여 제작한 TiO2와 Ag/TiO2 광학 박막의 특성)

  • Ag-doped $TiO_2$ thin films were prepared by RF magnetron co-sputtering method, and their physical and chemical properties were examined as a function of calcination temperature. XRD results showed that the crystallite size of Ag-doped films was smaller than that of the $TiO_2$ thin films. SEM results showed that the particle size of $Ag/TiO_2$ film was smaller and more uniform than pure $TiO_2$ film. The films had high transparency in the visible range. The films calcined at $600^{\circ}C$ were the anatase phase, and the films calcined at $900^{\circ}C$ were a mixture of anatase and rutile phases. The absorption edge of films calcined at $900^{\circ}C$ was red-shifted. This is due to the augmented absorption resulting from the phase transformation from anatase to rutile phase. And the transmittance of films decreased by the light scattering and absorption in the films. Photocatalytic activity of $Ag/TiO_2$ thin films was higher than that of the pure $TiO_2$ thin films.

  • The reduction behavior of $TiO_{2}$ in Al and Al/CaSi containing self-reducing $TiO_{2}$ briquettes(SRTB) was investigated. The maximum yield of Ti was expected with the slag composition of 45-55%CaO in the $CaO-Al_{2}O_{3}$ system. When $CaCO_{3}$ was used as a flux, the oxidation loss of reducing agent by $CO_{2}$ should be compensated, and therefore it leads to excessive requirement of the reducing agent. By using Al and CaSi mixture as a reducing agent of $TiO_{2}$, the reaction products both oxide and metal could be liquefied, and separated effectively with each other. As a result, the yield of Ti increases remarkably. The optimum mixing ratio of CaSi to Al is 78%CaSi-22%Al.

Bimetallic Pd@Ni-mesoporous TiO2 nanocatalyst for highly improved and selective hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds under UV light radiation

  • Bimetallic Pd@Ni nanostructure exhibited enhanced co-catalytic activity for the selective hydrogenation of benzaldehyde compare to their monometallic counterparts. Impregnation of these mono/bimetallic nanostructures on mesoporous $TiO_2$ leads to several surface modifications. The bimetallic PNT-3 ($Pd_3@Ni_1/mTiO_2$) exhibited large surface area ($212m^2g^{-1}$), and low recombination rate of the charge carriers ($e^--h^+$). The hydrogenation reaction was analyzed under controlled experiments. It was observed that under UV-light irradiations and saturated hydrogen atmosphere the bimetallic PNT-3 photocatalyst display higher rate constant $k=5.31{\times}10^{-1}h^{-1}$ owing to reduction in the barrier height which leads to efficiently transfer of electron at bimetallic/$mTiO_2$ interface.
